- I am painting a step-by-step Iris in this video, from drawing this with guidelines to paint with beautiful violets and greens. This is perfect for the beginner to watercolors.
These are so fun and easy. YOU can create this as well. I'm using a wet-in-wet technique, specifically a damp clean brush tip to push and pull the pigment and soften the edges.

Decided to learn watercolor, I’ve been an artist for a long time now but wanted a new challenge. I found that painting flowers has sped up the process, and your videos are wonderful. The fact that you don’t speed up your videos, skip steps, or show a part and then send us to a pay site is so nice, You share your knowledge like you genuinely want us to learn, thank you so much for this.
I'm so happy to gear that! Yes, I learned slower, and listening to the steps, and I'm sure I asked a lot of questions in college! I absolutely do, and it make me so happy when I hear my tutorials are helpful. Happy painting friend, I hope to continue to inspire you!
Perfect the way it is so beautiful 😊thank you 🙏
You're welcome 😊 Im glad you enjoyed this tutorial. It is the only way I can manage to draw this crazy little flowers :-) Happy painting friend!
Thanks so much for getting back to me! You are such a good teacher and I am so happy to have found your videos!! Can't wait for the next one😊
Wonderful Susie! Made my evening, and cant wait to continue helping and sharing all I know with you! I would love to hear what you enjoy painting and what you would like to see! Happy painting friend!
OMG Debbie that is so beautiful. Thank you for showing us how to draw and paint this beautiful flower. I love the purple.
You're so welcome! I was so happy I was able to find a way to break it down, I had to dig back into my "Iris" vault to find my sketches! Happy painting friend! Most of all enjoy.
I have been painting landscapes for a year and just started getting into flowers. I’m not a strong drawler. Sometimes even feeling inadequate that I shouldn’t have a paint channel since I’m not a strong drawler. Thanks for sharing the drawing and making the video easy for people like me to follow. Please do more videos like this. I’m sure they will do amazing. I just discovered your channel and love it. ❤
Hi Jennifer, I have to share with you, I have never thought I am a strong drawer either. It has helped me a lot to have these steps and guidelines to follow. I also have to associate the flowers with individual shapes that I recognize. Drawing using these lines and slow steps has helped me so much over the decades. I feel much more confident.
Here is another tutorial I Did using circles to draw flowers which helped me huge years ago! ua-cam.com/video/wmnjRHpnAGQ/v-deo.html
I hope to see you again and Happy painting, most of all enjoy!
I’m heading over to yours btw ! I bet it’s wonderful!

You are such a wonderful teacher Deb! I try other projects but always have the most success with your instruction. Thank you for your tutorials. You are an inspiration to my painting.
Thank you Terrie, I teach how I learned best, i like to know how to use a stroke for it to make sense. You made my evening! Thank you friend, Happy painting most of all have fun!
I’ve been looking my whole life for a medium that I personally could do and enjoy doing, thanks to you I have finally found one that I feel I am not doing 1st. Grader art with. Please know how grateful I am to you. Be blessed and know I will be following every single video you have posted and will post 😅😊💐🫧

Thank you so much for making irises ‘doable’
Your welcome Jackie, the Iris for years was a challenge for me as well as it has so many ruffly little petals and shapes. I found breaking it down like this always makes these fun flowers so much easier. Happy painting Jackie, and most of all enjoy!

Very beautiful and detailed, thank you
You’re welcome 😊 Years ago I never painted these lovely flowers, once I found a way to break it down, it made sense and now I have painted many for cards and such. They are so fun aren't they? Enjoy friend.
Thank you, Debbie. It was great to watch you paint this gorgeous flower. I’ll give it a try, and I hope I have a bit of success. You are a wonderful teacher. Thank you again.
Greetings Angie, I bet you will do great, always find at least one thing you did well, and like best, sometimes for me that's just the color I used, or one little spot I really liked how the watercolors blended. Sometimes its the entire piece! And thank you for your comment, I love sharing and teaching this beautiful medium.
Practice and warm up first, it always helps to warm up those fingers, and develop that muscle memory in no time you will be sitting down to a blank piece of paper and feel confident!

First off, thank you so much for what you are doing here, I've been watercolor painting for only a year, but was starting to get a little discouraged. Then you came along! Wow, I can't wait to get up in morning, make my coffee and check to see if you have a new video posted.
Second, I did this iris several times with great results and eventually tried it using watercolor pencils. Amazing!! Sorry for going on but you've got a fan for life.

@@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy That would be so cool, if you could have a weekend event in NZ! I do take hundreds of photos, but mainly of the landscapes, which are so stunning down there. It’s winter here and I didn’t notice many flowers, but the endless variety of coniferous trees fascinated me!

OMGosh Debbie so beautiful. Im responding in current time (2024), am 8 days post op knee surgery so have been watching a lot of your videos, both current and older and have not done WC in years and I must say out of all the lessons I've taken way back, no body ever taught the flower grid or the push pull method, we just had to eyeball the drawing so this will help tremendously. Can't wait for the day I can sit and paint again. Just live the way you teach..so once again Thank You🎨
Wow Kim, post op knee surgery, thats a big one! I hope you are well on the mend and will be runing, hopping, dancing and all those things that are so fun in life~ Welcome back to watercolors, they have been a part of my life since I was a child. I share all of the little techniques that helped me learn over the years and amde sense to me and my brain, lol. Im so happy they resonate with you and are helpful! It is my deepest pleasure to share what I know and hear you are looking to sit down and paint again! Happy healing and I cant wait to hear how your return to watercolors goes xo
I like how you teach water color. I like how you don't have music because it interfere with your teaching. I like how you say "Ooh how pretty ". I like how you name the colors that you use. And lots more. By the way do you teach water color portraits ? Love to follow you.
Im so glad, Yes, I am not quite tech svy enough, nor do I have a desire to add music to my real time tutorials. I do on the quick shorts, to make them fun, but not on the more instructional tutorials, those are a distraction for me :-) Im glad my teaching style helps, I did lots of commissions over the years of a very loose style of portraits but I dont feel im strong enough in the portrait area to do a tutorial :-) Thank you for being here with me in our little community!

So this is a combination of sketch and watercolor? You don’t erase the pencil. I’m glad you showed how to dab the brush. If I hadn’t seen it I would have dabbed the tip.
Im glad it helped Monica~ I usually will erase my lines if im drawing first or use a light watercolor pencil so it dissolves into the paint. When I create these tutorials I use darker pencil lines to help you all see what Im drawing. Another tip, use the kneaded eraser and roll it over your pencils lines it will soften and lighten them with very little damage to your beautiful textured paper Happy painting friend, most of all Let your creativity flow and enjoy!

Best tutorial I've seen for flowers so far. Very detailed, but without being intimidatingly difficult. I've only just started with watercolors, using the very affordable Winsor-Newton Cotman range from China (I had initially assumed those were just fakes, but found out recently they're manufactured specifically for the Chinese market by WN. Are you familiar with that range?). I also have the Dugato brush set you're using one of here. Hoping that paint and brush set will suffice until I become more skilled in the future. Subbed! - Best wishes from The Netherlands! (land of the flowers, about 60% of all the fresh flowers, and bulbs as well, in the world are grown here)
Wonderful Moon-moth! Thrilled to hear that. I occasionally create these videos that are a little more involved. Yes, I believe WN recently started this, I read about it somewhere, the packaging is a little bit different. The Dugato brush set is a wonderful little set, that lets you practice as a beginner, they typically last about a year, before the tip gets a bit worn, depending on how well you take care of your brushes and protect that tip. They are great for starting out, because not a huge investment, and you can replace them with the Princeton round 8 later for about 10.00. Princeton round 8 Velvetouch

I'm a newbie and just love your tutorials! I just watched your iris tutorial. I noticed that you leave your pencil outlines on your paintings. Do they ever cause problems with smudging? Thanks, in advance! Susie
Hi Susie, I never used to leave pencil lines until last year when I started creating UA-cam tutorials. Many said they couldn't see my lines. I do go over them frequently with a kneaded eraser which works great. If I lay my palm onto the pencil lines it definitely smudges, which I don't like. On my personal paintings I rarely leave them :-) Great questions!
Have you ever thought of doing an angel trumpet
Oh fun, no, but I will be googling that now! Thanks Denise
Where can I post my painting of my bearded iris following your video? thanks, Karine
Hi Karine, Yes, please do! You can go to the FB (private for subscribers here to show their work) facebook.com/groups/781794610217892/
It is a small group and everyone is so nice, and supportive, we have a lot of fun here. I hope to see you Karine and cant wait to see your Iris!
I just checked the pencils out. $30 a dozen.
Hi Theresa, Here are the ones I use these are 16.59 for three. It sounds expensive and I dont always pay a lot for all of my supplies but I do love these pencils . They are a bit of an indulgence :-) amzn.to/3Wiu8s0
I am not getting the same effects with this technique. 😢
It takes some practice Ensure your brush is only damp and clean. Use just the tip to pull the edge of the paint out, to feather it. The more water the more the pigment will spread and flow, getting out of control. Too little water and you cant feather out the edge. I hope that helps.
