My favourite movie of all time DARK CITY. I saw it at the movies when it first came out. Mum & I were the only 2 in there. But I was hooked within the first 5 minutes. Dam awesome movie. Sad it didn’t get the recognition it well and truly deserves. I went and bought the soundtrack immediately after the film ended. Was sad to find out the Jennifer Connelly didn’t sing it was actually Anita Kelsey an American radio and tv commercial voice and jingle singer. However on the German blu ray release it does have the directors cut that actually has Jennifer singing and she does a fair job considering she’s not a singer. And yes this movie was filmed at Fox Studios Australia 🇦🇺 up in NSW. Such an underrated film. But glad it has gained a cult following over the years. I’d be lying if I tried to tell you how many times I’ve watched this film. And yeah there is an entire disc of cutscenes in the Balderunner box set and a total of 7 different versions of the film in the blu ray box set. All of which could stand alone as their own film. Luv you guys and luv your vids. Thanks for covering DARK CITY. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

@@Indigo_Gaming i agree. More than cgi though, i see matrix as the first cyberpunk movie which was totally aligned with its time. This was given perfectly with pale faces like all people stuck in a screen have. Alos with green as main color like everything is a green screen. I've seen/covered most if not all of what you are talking about. Watched Avalon a while back, before I realized it was the same director as the original GITS movie. I liked it, but the theme I get from the movies you prefer over The Matrix is that these films don't have resolutions in their endings. They end in a question rather than an answer. You could say that eXistenZ ends in a big question mark, but that doesn't change the fact that very little actually happens in the film (as much as I enjoy it). It's mostly busywork and digging into the bio-electronic gadgets and lore (which we find out isn't even real to begin with). A cool underdog movie, but not a particularly brilliant story.
@@Indigo_Gaming Oh I agree with you there. But then most of Cronenberg's films end in questions. Videodrome, even History Of Violence. I think that a lot does happen in Existenz it's mainly character stuff and the idea of what happens when we lose ourselves in an artificial reality. Something that Avalon does quite well. The ending of Avalon isn't even really open. Throughout the whole film she slowly loses touch with reality until,at the end when she is in the real world, all she can see is the game. It drives her crazy, thus Welcome To Avalon as the child smiles at her. Welcome to crazy basically. As much as I like The Matrix it is a bit more simple in it's execution. It's not that The Matrix isn't open ended, although it kind of is,but that it takes the most simple approach to the topic matter. It's a great action film with some ideas sprinkled in there. Where the other two films are mainly about ideas with some action sprinkled in. That's the big difference for me.
I disagree about about the rave scene. I thought it perfectly imparted the idea that these people think they're all gonna die, and that every single one of them knows this is their last moment of safety together, so they're gonna express themselves in the subterranean cyberpunk culture they developed, it was one my very favorite things about the entire series. I also think The Animatrix contains top moments as well.
While I understand the sentiment, and that's basically what the sequel-Morpheus says, it is a little hard to empathize with a people who, upon learning of an impending force that could destroy them all, instead of preparing for the fight of their lives, decide to jam out to Fluke and bone. Doesn't emit the sense of urgency or danger that a more competent movie such as The Matrix 1 would have probably done.
@@Indigo_Gaming If I remember correctly, the final assault D-day type plan was already complete. The combat initiative was in the hands of the residents of Zion, and the assault was scheduled for their next "morning" ( whatever passes for daybreak in a cave ). Their hovercraft were already combat-ready, for they were already in constant use for that. I've seen numerous comments elsewhere that indicate the commenter mistook the rave for an "orgy", but that clearly did not happen in the movie, and wasn't even implied. ¿Why would it be, when their private residences were nearby along the cave walls, and they clearly lived in society with children about? ¿And maybe some people just don't have an audio taste for that particular music & dancing? I felt this was far more like a "musicians playing on the deck of the titanic" kind of moment. ¿But I am a musician, so maybe that's far more important to me than other people who watch The Matrix? ¿Maybe those people only like action, and not Cyberpunk?
Yeah anytime I hear the term reused assets as a detriment... Like my blood boils out my ears, and it's always in the pettiest way too.. but yeah no shit they reuse that concrete texture asset why would you go get another one when you had a perfectly good one.. why would you go get another Major movie set when you have a perfectly good Major movie set LOL.. I feel like that's as mentality if people are looking at it that way it's driving these studios to go do stupid things and I think in gaming especially that's just not only is it ridiculous because you have an entire virtual world.. and nobody says unreal is reused assets every time people use that engine on a different game, even though it's probably closer to that in a concept then reusing a texture file.. but like the budgets and the time length for all of these things is so high at this point because they have to keep redoing all this stuff and they shouldn't.. but I feel like you see this more and more now where they're rebuilding everything from scratch and it's just like stop it.. is it a good animation? Is it a good texture file please reuse it in your sequel.. please don't spend money and effort and time and interns blood recrafting whatever you're doing here.. just make it look visually consistent and you're good, credit everybody's work you're good this is a good thing.. this used to always be a good thing like from a production standpoint, this should not be something that you have to to overcome it's not an overcoming issue.
also, kinda bizarre to say that neo would've "lived out his life in bliss" if he had taken the blue pill. he was miserable and looking for something more. there was no choice. "you call this a choice?" is a fine line.
also also: fucking hilarious to hear ggman say "this was made by someone who doesn't understand the matrix." pretty sure she understands her own work better than you, my dude. i mean, talk about condescending... nerds, man.
i find some of your ideas about rpgs enjoyable, but your approach to this conversation is pretty disappointing. gonna have to say resurrections just wasn't made for you.
The Matrix Resurrections was one of two things: 1. It was an intentionally bad movie, which is all meta, discussing the inevitability of disappointment, and the cynical nature of making money-grab sequels, forced into being by big companies like Warner Brothers. If that's the case, then it should be despised and shamed absolutely by wasting the talent, efforts and time of all the crew, Keanu, Carrie and VFX people who worked countless hours, thinking they were making a real movie. 2. It was a legitimate attempt to continue the Matrix series, and really thought it was bringing up powerful ideas, debunking theories and had clever writing, fun action and special effects. Aside from one or two shootouts and the slow-mo apple scene, the movie failed in pretty much each and every aspect, with a strangely comedic tone. If this is the case, then it should be despised and shamed absolutely (again) for wasting the time and talent of all those involved. Either way, the movie was a disaster.
(apologize for the length of this, but I kept thinking of other things to add as I was listening) I actually did see Dark City in the theater, but I don't remember a whole lot about the experience. I can say though that I did like it enough that I bought the DVD not too long after it came out. (going back and adding this since you started talking about it - I was working in a music store at the time it came out and I bought the soundtrack as well. I think it had an Echo and the Bunnymen song and there were some other good ones on there, including a cover of "the night has a thousand eyes") Another movie I like that has some of the same kind of style was Donnie Darko. I know parts of it are a bit sillier maybe, but I definitely saw that one in the theater and it left you walking away wondering what the $%$# exxactly had happened. Subsequent views made it more apparent, but it was really neat over all - and it had a cool visual style as well. I'm a huge fan of Bladerunner and the like - other PKD based films like A Scanner Darkly and even Johnny Neumonic (sp?), as well as the remake of the... darn it, trying to remember the name, the original had Arnold in it I think, but the remake started someone else but it was better than the original one. (just remembered, I think it was Total Recall - I know I could have looked it up on wikipedia, but I try to resist doing that if I can to give my memory a chance/workout. still a little old-fashioned as well I guess.) I haven't seen the new Matrix because I'm not keen on going to the theater at the moment and also because the reviews from folks (not the critics but like folks on here). Ooh.. no no, I actually really like the voiceover. Lots of people hate it, but to me the noir aesthetic needs the voice-over in a way. I have the original version on VHS. For the longest time Ridley Scott wouldn't release the original cut on DVD, but I think he finally did on one of the bigger Bladerunner box sets. There are some really really good documentaries on the box set as well - maybe 2 or 3 of them covering different aspects of the film (special effects and art style and a couple others) I think it is definitely worth watching the original cut of Bladerunner if you're able to. Also wanted to throw in that I've been watching/following the cyberpunk series and its been really good. I grew up with a lot the cyber-punk-ish films and eventually the books. My dad gave me the Neuromancer book when i was in high school and i really got into that series. There's another neat book that isn't cyberpunk but its adjacent in a way. It's a book called "Dream Park." It's about this essentially LARP game, but that is done with projectors and live actors etc and its played as this competitive sport almost. But its from the early 80's and it really pre-figures the whole concept of high production value live action role playing. There's more to the story but I won't spoil any of it in case you want to check it out. There were a couple books in a series about it, but the first one is the best and the one I've gone back to and read several times. **amended: found my copy of it. It was written by Larry Niven and its from 1981. So its actually older than I thought even, and I guess that much more revolutionary given how early it is. I think the Freddy one is with the kids like marionettes with strings and stuff to move the arms/legs etc - those movies creeped me out and so I haven't seen them too many times, but I do seem to remember that part in one of them. (if I've got it right) All I know is that when I saw the Matrix it definitely did not jump out to me that it had been ripping off Dark City and so I wonder if that's not something that's come about later on (I remember you mentioning that in your video but I don't recall exactly what you said a about the nature of it. Maybe the fact that it is kinda dark and gritty and has a bit of a goth flair to it, but Dark City feels more like noir and the Matrix doesn't really at all. So I don't really see any major overlaps. If anything Dark City has more of a David Lynch aesthetic, almost like in the Eraserhead universe - and the matrix is more cyberpunk-ish. I managed to miss Fury Road in the theaters but I'm a big fan of the earlier movies. The original Mad Max was hard to find here in the US for a good while (its another like the original cut of Bladerunner that I had to get on VHS from ebay around the time it went online. that was the one place you could find really weird, out of print or hard to come by stuff) - while Road Warrior and Thunderdome you could pick in a lot of stores. I don't know how controversial it is now, but I actually really did/do like the 2nd and 3rd Matrix movies as well. When Neo finally recognizes his true powers and can suddenly destroy Agent Smith and anyone else in and out of the Matrix it just had such an awesome feel to it - where you're just get this feeling, after he's been sort of fighting him to a draw and/or just hanging on up until that point and so that transition is just "ok, here we go.." And maybe its a bit cheesy to a degree, but I think from an emotional standpoint and how triumphant it feels overall - that part still gives me a little chill when I see it.
Dark City was also one of the very few films that Roger Ebert actually recorded commentary for on the Blu Ray release. It's a very good film. I remember seeing Blade Runner when it first came out,1982 was the best year for films ever, and even then I hated the voice over. I understand what the idea was and it might have worked. But it was slapped together so quickly with no time spent on really getting the writing down well, that and the acting is just bad. Ford clearly didn't care about doing it at all. You can even hear him complain in some of the special features from the special suitcase version I have. If it had been handled better it could have worked. But in this case the 2007 cut is far better in every way. It gives the film the feel of a tone poem and allows the music to really set the atmosphere and mood far better. Plus the tacked on ending from the Shining really hurts the oppressive mood that the entire thing had. It reminds of how Gilliam's Brazil was chopped up and spit out by the studio system. That pretty much goes against everything that Cyberpunk stands for. Now there are like 5 cuts of the film so you can take your pick. Lol
@@kellinwinslow1988 ya, I've got a blueray set that has several versions and then it has all those documentaries. I dunno - parts of the narration aren't great, but I still like the noir feel of it. I love the music too though - I've got the expanded set of Vangelis' score. Blade Runner is one of my favorite movies and that's probably why I'm partial to it. There are plenty of bits that are lacking but the overall feel and look was great. So you think Brazil goes against cyberpunk themes or did you mean Bladerunner? I mean Bladerunner doesn't quite measure up to the PKD original and it tries to sanitize it a bit for mass audiences, but I think it still stands up as one of the better cyberpunk-ish movies from an aesthetic standpoint at the least. The newest one tackles the philosophical side a bit more/better than the original one, but even the original gives some insight into it, though again its simplified a lot and not as cohesive/comprehensive as it certainly could have been. Though, that picture probably wouldn't have had a whole lot of mass market appeal.
Too much to address here, but I also liked the IDEA of the monologues in Blade Runner. Like I said in this podcast, I saw the theatrical cut on VHS multiple times before seeing the director's cut. The problem lies with some of the unnecessary lines in the voiceover, and Harrison's intentionally bad reading of them. I do like one of the deleted scenes, though, where he talks about the horrors of hunting reps, and how his wife became estranged when he'd come home covered in blood.

@@KericoTube Interesting answer but your humor leaves a lot to be desired. Lol.
That last Matrix movie was the biggest steaming pile of shit I've ever had the displeasure if wasting a portion of my life watching.
Is it a good texture file please reuse it in your sequel.. please don't spend money and effort and time and interns blood recrafting whatever you're doing here.. just make it look visually consistent and you're good, credit everybody's work you're good this is a good thing.. this used to always be a good thing like from a production standpoint, this should not be something that you have to to overcome it's not an overcoming issue.
matrix resurrections is incredible. easily the best of the sequels. shame it's so misunderstood.
also, kinda bizarre to say that neo would've "lived out his life in bliss" if he had taken the blue pill. he was miserable and looking for something more. there was no choice. "you call this a choice?" is a fine line.
also also: fucking hilarious to hear ggman say "this was made by someone who doesn't understand the matrix." pretty sure she understands her own work better than you, my dude. i mean, talk about condescending... nerds, man.
"everyone hates this one." lol. yeah, no.
i find some of your ideas about rpgs enjoyable, but your approach to this conversation is pretty disappointing. gonna have to say resurrections just wasn't made for you.
The Matrix Resurrections was one of two things:
(just remembered, I think it was Total Recall - I know I could have looked it up on wikipedia, but I try to resist doing that if I can to give my memory a chance/workout. still a little old-fashioned as well I guess.)
I haven't seen the new Matrix because I'm not keen on going to the theater at the moment and also because the reviews from folks (not the critics but like folks on here).
Ooh.. no no, I actually really like the voiceover.
Bethesda bad because reasons
Cannot hear the podcaster. Thumbs down.
Why would you stain your rep with this "guest"? Man...
Not sure what you mean. He makes a lot of quality reviews, hundreds of them, in fact.
@@Indigo_Gaming I won't argue about it because I love YOUR channel. I'll just say the quality of his reviews in the last couple of years dropped. I had to stop watching because of a few instances of outright lies (for better entertainment value I guess). And was far from being the only one.
