It is a magnetic stirrer. You can stir it up with a spoon, I just liked the mad-science effect of using laboratory equipment.

Of course you can. The main thing is to use 100 mg per 100 ml of liquid, but you can also experiment

You can probably use even less than that. I think the solution in this video is too concentrated; later experimentation showed it looks better when it's more transparent.
