I just got the Pro version. Couldn’t be happier. So easy to use and has all the options I’d normally be looking for such as multiple date and time formats. I put mine to the left of the rear view mirror and at about the same height.
Had this cam for over 1 year. Drive a lot, every day. Had no issues with camera. I have a 128GB Samsung EVO card and very good results. Small camera, but good results and options. I leave it on 24/7 with no issues and bought another for my co van. Thanks for a great video, lots of good info.
Thanks for that quick run through. Very helpful as I understand by doing/watching, then doing. Reading the instructions takes me longer to get it. So thank you. Question I have is can you set the camera to Not record speed? I know how to turn off the speed from the view screen, but the embedded video has your exact GPS coordinates, date & time, and speed. I don’t want speed on the video play back. Here is why, it’s not accurate and almost got me into some trouble in a car accident. My passenger was actually iphone live video recording my speed. I had to get the dealer to essentially certify my car was accurately calibrated, etc. So I actually love the camera because the video clarity and recording are the best. I’m not a big fan of the embedded speed technology because in the end I was clear, but almost got cited fir speed because the camera was actually wrong. Like I should probably have better odds At winning the powr-ball lottery because we were just out testing our new Rov camera and this stop sign runner almost got me into trouble for something he did wrong. I was completely cleared, and the cop and judge were nice after I showed them my camera was not working properly with speed information. I would have been screwed if my passenger didn’t have the iphone video to back up my statement. So is there a way to not have the speed get recorded and embedded? If not, I will be purchasing another camera.
Yes you can turn off the speed. Mine is turned off. Go watch my first video, and I show how to turn it off there. ua-cam.com/video/W_n23HYgAmo/v-deo.html
Great videos…watched both…im planning to go jeeping in CO & Moab…was wondering if you think this camera would work to document the trip instead of using a more expensive Go-pro type of camera
Definitely! Make sure you get the 512gb SD card and maybe not the same one I have because I've started to hear roumers that they're failing. But still get a bigger SSD and in your case I'd say set your loop to the max file size. So there's less splicing things together, and maybe turn the G-sensor off. Also keep in mind that this only works when plugged in. So it can't be used for shots outside of the vehicle
Trying this because my viofo only lasted for like 3 years until it pooped out yesterday. It struggled in the heat so much im thinking it couldnt take it anymore. Hopefully this fares better since the device itself isnt literally on the glass surface of windshield like the viofo was.
I first started using mine on September 15, 2022, and like the camera very much. While it claims to be 4K, it is absolutely not. Look at the pixel resolution in the fine print, and you'll learn the truth. A true 4K camera will cost you more money. Anyway, for the price, the video playback on my 4K monitors looks great. I set my loop for 10 minutes which allows me to view video in decent lengths. If you loop short time periods, you'll quickly become agitated by the constant need to start another video to continue down the road. After each trip to and from the city, I dump the recorded video on a computer, so the next time I venture out, the camera won't be forced to overwrite video of the previous outing. I recommend the camera.
Your totally right, it's not a great "4k" but it's fantastic for what I get and what it cost. I prefer the 1 min clips because it makes for faster file transfer because most clips I get are usually less than 60 sec, and if I need more I can just jump to the end of the interaction, and only transfer what I want/need. Also with a 512gb micro SD card it will hold like 2 months of my driving anyway. I'm glad you like it too
I expected a video recording from the cam. I have a cheap APEMAN $39.99 from Walmart for more than 4 years and is working perfectly, that is way I wanted to see if there is a difference

I have 4 of these for every car in my household. The issue I'm having is that sometimes, it doesn't store or save an event. My dad got into a fender bender, I went to retrieve the event and it just showed a black box. This has happened several times. The best I can figure, is that something is going on with the sd card. Morning Happy Turkey Day to everyone. I got my dash cam installed yesterday. I did not turn on loop mode but will and set it to 1 min. Noticed on drive home it kept saying wifi connected wifi disconnected is that normal ?
@wisconsinbound2123 yes, your phone is probably connecting to it then realizing it doesn't have a data connection and then disconnecting. You can either tell your phone to stay connected regardless of internet connection, or just turn of the wifi on the device. Hope you have a great Turkey Day!
The fact that it will stop recording for any response is a deal breaker for me. Anyway, can I watch recordings or control it with my phone? I have a movement disorder and to control anything on the cam while installed will be impossible.
so does this camera continuously loop record? i just bought a different dash cam and wasnt impressed at all it would record for the first 2 mins of my drive and thats it... wifi was also shot on it. not reliable enough for my standards. ive been looking at this one to buy but i want to be able to watch my whole drive if i wanted to. and does the wifi on it work well? Thanks
It does continuously loop record. With my 512 gb SD card, I can record a few months' worth of driving, I drive for work. however, the Wi-Fi is not what some people think. You can connect your phone to it when it's turned on but when your car is off unless you have it directly wired to your car battery using a fuse or something else you can't remotely view your camera you have to be in the vehicle with your camera to connect to the Wi-Fi on it. However, I have found that it is a little bit slow, and it's faster for me to just take the MicroSD card out and install that in my computer to remove any video files that I want
I own this dash cam to. I'm not very pleased with it. The cam works great. But I can't seem to see my location and speed on my android phone. And the WiFi is slower then molasses in mid January. I can't seem to share my videos either. It's also 1 mph slower than my garmin gps. So which one is right?
@1111bigdiesel the speed is recorded on the video if you have it turned on. I wouldn't use it as my primary speedometer. Also I don't use the wifi because it's so slow. It's so easy to just take the SD card out and transfer the files on a computer.
I just set my dash-cam today and I’m a bit confused on the g-sensor. Does it start recording only when there is impact detection or also when it detects motion? If I’m correct, it can only save 5 minutes of video when it’s parked. So it would use up the battery pretty fast if it records when there’s motion.
Hi, I can’t figure out the wifi situation. I hot spot in my car a lot (sales need to enter orders in my car) and this turns off the cam wifi and stops recording (which I forget and then continue driving rendering the cam useless). Any advice?
So in the instructions they say not to use Samsung Evo Select but looks like that is what you are using. I’ll go ahead and order from the link you shared.
Only if you install it with the "hardwire kit" and then turn on "24-hour Auto Parking mode". It will then record a time-lapse (1 pic per second) when the car is off. If you watch mu original install video: I touch on that. ua-cam.com/video/W_n23HYgAmo/v-deo.html
@Grant Butler I have a tesla and for some reason it isn't picking everything up so I thought ide look for a dash cam as a back up just for the interior, do you know of any wireless cameras I can use?
Can you leave a dashcam plugged into cigarette lighter when car is turned off? Cause i've been unplugging mine whenever i leave my car, I also have a usb option on my vehicle but I don't use it
It depends on your vehicle. My car turns off power to the lighter outlet when I take out my keys. In that case, yes, you can leave it in. I leave mine plugged in.
Hey Grant Saw ur 2 videos, they were very useful. Thank you and appreciate ur efforts! I have a question for you, last night some one hit my car on the driver side. I m wondering whether these cams r good enough to capture the license plates?
Hey Grant, I got my new Rove R2-4K dashcam today. Can u pls suggest the memory card that i need to purchase? Is it samsung evo or samsung pro or rove memory card. Also can u pls tell me how many weeks can be recorded in 256gb memory card.
@@sirazs923 so record times vary depending on the resolution settings, and how much you drive. Typically 4k video takes up 14GB/hr so 256gb card could hold 18hrs of driving. Also you should be good with any micro SD card from a reputable brand, just make sure that it is "v30" and U3 (the 3 will be inside of the letter U) This Samsung onr is a good deal right now. amzn.to/3Mr6h4I
Hey Grant, My Rove R2-4K dashcam got stuck and not all responding even after removing the power cable. It simply shows as Power is connected and none of the buttons work including power button. This is the 3rd time I am facing this issue. I have reported to customer care lets see what they say. And also yesterday I recorded a video where a car just passed close to my car and when I see the recorded video I can see the car but license plate is blurry and not at all able to read the license plate even by zooming it.
Have you done this? My dad bought my hubs and I each one awhile ago and he still doesn’t want his set up so I was thinking about putting the extra in the rear.
I heard those SD cards are going bad Pretty quick I talked to someone at Rove and they don’t recommend that sd card anymore They now recommend Samsung pro endurance What do you think ? I know the Evo is cheaper
@@GrantButler okay may I ask how long have you had it and where did you purchase it from? The pro endurance is only like $10 more Than the Evo select on Amazon Btw great video
Stop calling it a 4K dash cam!!! Those require 8 MPixel sensors. This uses a 5 MPixel sensor same sensor used by the 2 and 2.5K cams. In fact, this could be a 2.5K cam at 30 fps IF they had offered it in firmware and on the menu. But they didn't so it IS a 2K cam at 30 fps. Or a 2.5K cam at lower fps because it struggling to interpolate the sensor's native 1944p to 2160p just to FOOL PEOPLE into believing it is 4K. Ironic their box says "TRUTH BE TOLD". And no other reason to spend so much processing and quality degradation with no extra information to go from 1944 to 2160. Users will think they are getting better quality with highest setting because they don't get to see the superior 1944p that is stretched to a whopping 2160. They only get to see the 1440. I got mine over holidays for around $80. I have better ones for my cars. I plan to use this to replace the 1080p unit I use in rental cars.
You are absolutely correct. True 4K has a horizontal resolution of 4096 pixels (4096 x 2160 is 4K). UHD is 3840 x 2160. But, in the industry, 3840 is considered to be the minimum horizontal resolution for 4K. The Rove Model R2-4K is not a 4K camera, despite the misleading model name. I own 2 of them, so I am familiar with their specs. The max resolution of this dash cam is 2880 x 2160P.
No, it uses a 5MP sensor and the output resolution is actually 2880x2160. While it is technically the right height, the width is more narrow, and the image quality is more like 2k-2.5k upscaled to 4K. To get "true 4k" it would need a 8MP sensor, but a sensor like that that could handle continues recording like a dashcam would be prohibitively expensive. Hope this helps
I didn't find Rove products to be reliable enough for anything beyond entertainment. Don't count on it to have your footage recorded when you try to retrieve it as it randomly skips entire recording clips on all cameras- even with their SD cards. It's good for fun, but I never comes through when you need it. I tried Rove products for 2 years- and am not satisfied, and I would NOT recommend them to anyone I liked.
Sorry you didn't have a positive experience with it. I do make sure to reformat my SD card every few months because it will be weird like that if you don't.
@@GrantButler How would one even know that works or makes a difference? It's not the card's fault, it's the camera poorly managing it's most CRITICAL AND ESSENTIAL FEATURE; Record the fucking video. It failed me more times than I can remember. It's really just a cheap, Chinese quality toy camera anyway.
@theamerican7080 you should go watch my first video on this camera. In the unboxing and setup process there's literally a section that sets up a reminder to format the SD card
@@GrantButler I gave up on that brand and haven't been happier. I've been back and forth with them for a year. I've had enough. Actually, I want to ram the broken camera down their throat while it's still attached to my car.
I just bought the Pro version and I'm loving it. It has the type C connection.

@@GripGarage thanks for watching
The fact that it will stop recording for any response is a deal breaker for me. Anyway, can I watch recordings or control it with my phone? I have a movement disorder and to control anything on the cam while installed will be impossible.
@stevemyo8137 Mine only stops recording when I turn off my car. Yes you can control it with your phone through the app
so does this camera continuously loop record? i just bought a different dash cam and wasnt impressed at all it would record for the first 2 mins of my drive and thats it... wifi was also shot on it. not reliable enough for my standards. ive been looking at this one to buy but i want to be able to watch my whole drive if i wanted to. and does the wifi on it work well?
Do you have a problem that when your connected to the dash cam through wifi your phone data stops? If so how can i fix that
Yes, and there is no fix to it. You just have to do what you need, download, update settings, whatever, then disconnect from its wifi.
@@GrantButler bummer! Thanks
Does this only record the road in front? Doesn’t record inside the vehicle?
Correct. There is only 1 camera on this one.
They have other kits that have front , cabin and rear .

OH MY GOD!! I thought I had a dead pixel on my phone because of the dot that appears on your little finger at 6:13 🫠🤪🫣
No, unfortunately, my camera has a few dead pixels. One day I'll save up for a new one.
Does it record over the old videos once the SD card is full?
Yes it does
I own this dash cam to.
Why you didn't post the videos of actually driving so that we could see the detail this camera does or doesn't capture?
I'm sorry I didn't think of that, however, you can go look at my other videos that I've posted on this channel of the video quality
Here's an hour & 40 minute video of me driving
ua-cam.com/video/3E8Bv-BOFR8/v-deo.html
Can you see it at night from in your house, to watch your car?
No.
I just set my dash-cam today and I’m a bit confused on the g-sensor. Does it start recording only when there is impact detection or also when it detects motion? If I’m correct, it can only save 5 minutes of video when it’s parked. So it would use up the battery pretty fast if it records when there’s motion.
Motion activation is only available if you have hardwired it to have continuous power. Otherwise the 5 min (max) is activated with impact detection
Hi, I can’t figure out the wifi situation. I hot spot in my car a lot (sales need to enter orders in my car) and this turns off the cam wifi and stops recording (which I forget and then continue driving rendering the cam useless). Any advice?
You don't need to turn on wifi to record to the Micro SD card. It automatically records on there.
How’s it doing now after a year?
It'll be 2 yrs in August. It's still running great. I have it in my work car, and do between 3-6hrs of driving every day
@@GrantButler great. Thanks man!
So in the instructions they say not to use Samsung Evo Select but looks like that is what you are using. I’ll go ahead and order from the link you shared.
@@ramgok interesting, I wonder why they'd say that.
Does the camera record overnight even when the car is off ?
Only if you install it with the "hardwire kit" and then turn on "24-hour Auto Parking mode". It will then record a time-lapse (1 pic per second) when the car is off.
If you watch mu original install video: I touch on that.
ua-cam.com/video/W_n23HYgAmo/v-deo.html
My App doesn’t playback my videos do you know how to fix that?
Make sure the camera firmware is up to date. Make sure the dashcam's wifi is on, and you're connected to that wifi.
@@GrantButler when I’m connected to the wifi it says not connected to internet. Is it supposed to say that? I’m on an IPhone
@@KingJuanGaming that's correct.
I keep seeing wireless and it's not even true, it has to be hardwired into the car right?
The "wireless" refers to you can connect your phone wirelessly. It still needs power

Can you update the firmware on the camera via the app?
I don't think so

Hey Grant,
I got my new Rove R2-4K dashcam today.
Also you should be good with any micro SD card from a reputable brand, just make sure that it is "v30" and U3 (the 3 will be inside of the letter U)
This Samsung onr is a good deal right now. amzn.to/3Mr6h4I

Well 4k is in the model name haha. But I haven't looked too close into everything else you've said, but I believe it.
@@GrantButler Yeah, see if they offer 3840 x 2160p. That is 4K.
What other camera do you have in your car that's better, I'm looking for another one
@@GrantButler hey there. Curious if you’ve found anything better or still hanging onto and using this one?
It’s 4k? Really?
