  • Photos put together using ProShow Gold with music from the fabulous Otis Redding. During the 60's Otis was the king of soul and met an untimely death in 1967 when the plane he was in, crashed. I had the fortunate pleasure of seeing Otis on Stage at the Finsbury Park Astoria in London while Otis was the star of the legendary Hit The Road Stax tour. Great song, his legacy will live for generations to come......

Dick Dingwiza I wish I could have shared Otis with my dad. He died at 42 in 1964. He would have loved the soul music he missed out on. The last three years of his life didn’t afford him much time to listen to music, he was aboard ship most of the time. He did write us a letter from the Mediterranean telling us that there was this new group from England that we would be hearing about. That was soon before he died. He missed out on the Beatles too. The first LP I bought wasn’t the Beatles, it was Otis Redding. If you like this song, check out Robert Palmer ‘s cover. You might like it. His first LP was also Otis Redding. Palmer was straight up blue eyed soul.

Oh, man. The talent of the 1960s: Otis, Sam Cooke, Wilson Pickett, Percy Sledge, Ben E. King, Ray Charles, James Brown, James Carr, Marvin Gaye, Jackie Wilson . . . and that's just a few of the great male vocalists. All of them great. This is one of those knockout songs. I was in a store recently and heard it on the radio. I wasn't expecting to hear it, but there it was. I couldn't move until the end of it: too powerful.

Back in 1968 at the age of 17 my cousin lent me an album, “This is soul” that was the first time I had heard of this unequalled soul singer. It was Christmastime and a year since his young soul was taken from us. I soon collected most of his records, and found a new love of music, which has never left me. Motown’s Marvin Gaye, was a close second for me, but Otis was and is still a soul singer that can never be rivalled. A voice so mature at a very young age, my God, what would he have achieved if he had lived? RIP great man.

I've got dreams, dreams to remember
I've got dreams, dreams to remember
Honey, I saw you there last night
Another man's arms holding you tight
Nobody knows what I feel inside
All I know, I walked away and cried
I've got dreams, dreams to remember
Listen to me (I've got dreams) rough dreams (dreams to remember)
I know you said he was just a friend
But I saw him kiss you, again and again
These eyes of mine, they don't fool me
Why did he hold you, so tenderly
I've got dreams, dreams to remember
Listen honey (I've got dreams) rough dreams (dreams to remember)
I still want you to stay
    I still love you anyway
I don't want you to ever leave
Girl, you just satisfy me, ooh-wee, ooh yeah
I know you said he was just a friend
But I saw you kiss him again and again
These eyes of mine, they don't fool me
Why did he hold you so tenderly
I've got dreams, dreams to remember
Listen to me mama (I've got dreams) bad dreams, rough dreams (dreams to remember)
Don't make me suffer (I've got dreams) rough dreams, bad dreams (dreams to remember)

This is the very best of Otis Redding, first time I heard it was at midnight in Tulsa, Okla. The DJ was dying of cancer and he played this so that whenever anyone heard it would think of him and Otis. I do!

I've always felt that there's a time and a place for every song. Every type of music and song fits a certain mood at a point in time or period in time. Doesn't matter if you hear a song when your five, or fifty five, something about the music just resonates. This is one of those songs. Timeless. If you haven't yet connected with Otis, you will.

The King of Soul. The man died tragically too soon...but man did his short life impact music. I don't know if there is a more soulful voice than Otis Redding...if there is, I have yet to hear it. The passion he put into singing every word is unrivaled. He has always made me feel some type of way emotionally. God Bless him and RIP king.

There is a lesson I see often in these comments: we often miss how good music is because of generational bias or something, but if we listen 'again n again" that often turns around. An open mind will open all kinds of great stuff up to us. I always liked soul but now I love it. I listen to anything. That is another comment I see a lot. These days, the availability of music is astonishing. Balance that with *live* music and you are blessed.
