Thanks for all the tips and tricks with the goose box. I just purchased my first travel trailer and get it in a few weeks, we’ve only had horse trailers with living quarters. So I really didn’t want to spend money converting my truck to accommodate a 5th wheel hitch as my gooseneck hitch in under mount then dealing with a massive hitch and losing bed space. So the goose box is the perfect solution, I can’t wait for mine.
Great instructional video. I have a gen 1 Reese 20k Goosebox. I would like to add a couple tips I discovered using this setup. I purchased the B&W 3”extended ball which has a handle on the ball for removing (needed the extended ball to clear my tool box). I bought an Iball camera that I place on the handle of the ball and it comes with a monitor to view while backing up. I also placed an orange piece of duct tape on the center of the angled portion of the Reese hitch. This allowed me a visual from side to side and when I no longer see the tape in the camera while backing up it is perfectly over the ball front to back. Works great. Also regarding chains. One time while backing up my chain kinked snapping the chain, so I bought clear plastic tubing and slid it over the full length of both chains and used a heat gun to shrink tubing on chains. This keeps the chains from ever kinking again. Hope these tips help for others. I’m sold on gooseneck vs 5th wheel hitch.
Another tip. Don't air the air bag up, with the hitch latch cable pulled back in the open position. The air bag will, when full of air, put a bunch of pressure on it as the lower section rotates downward, and be a real pain to get it released so it will latch. I run Ridgid 18v tools, and got one of their portable 18v air compressors, just for the camper. Only air up with the hitch in the latched/closed position. I run the 16k Goosebox on my 2016 KZ Durango 1500 which is a lightweight 5th wheel, with a 10K GVWR. It's such a smooth ride behind my 2014 Ram 3500. I have been very pleased with this combination. I also ran the Anderson Ultimate aluminum 5th wheel hitch before the Goosebox, and that was a very smooth ride as well. But it's so nice not having anything in the bed of the truck, or having to store such a bulky item, when unhitched. I've never used an actual 5th wheel hitch, since I acquired a 5th wheel trailer. With the Anderson aluminum option, and or the Reese Goosebox option, I don't see any reason to even try an actual 5th wheel hitch. Good vid.
Another great video and you did a good job on the installation tutorial. I bought the anderson hitch after your review and I enjoy it. Since it is just one year old I will keep it plus easy to remove and store in my rear garage. Thanks for all your helpful videos
Sure thing, appreciate that. Still love the Andersen too and their setup. I always recommend it to anybody. Just wanted to try taking the convenience and tow experience one step further. Pretty happy so far. I’ll be reviewing this again after a year of use. Thanks for watching 👍🏼
Another good video. I’ve never towed with a gooseneck but have always wondered if it was better. I thought of another possible pro. If you ever need to use a different truck (yours is in the shop, etc.) it would be easier to find one with a ball than one set up for the rails or pucks for a conventional 5th wheel hitch.
Thanks bud. Yeah that’s definitely a pro, on the flip side a con would be if somebody needed my help I probably couldn’t tow their camper because most people have a conventional hitch. Been really happy with this setup. I’ll be reviewing it again in a year or so to see how I still like it.
I love my 20k Goosebox and can relate to the pros and the cons. One observation is that you would really want to make sure that those chain attachment points are strong enough to do what they are intended to do. The clevis style connectors on the bed "loops" have to be heavy duty enough to take the massive shock of jerking that will take place if the trailer ball broke of the trailer came off the ball. Of course the loops (part of the underbed ball support structure) have to be that stout as well...they don't seem very heavy duty by appearances, but I guess the manufacturer knows what they're doing (B&W in my case).😀 Also, those eye hook kind of attachments seem like they might just snap off since they would be taking all the brunt of the force at a 90 degree angle to the chain. Can't imagine what it would look like to see the trailer come off the ball while driving down the road... 😮
gave me the basics so when I go to install my GenY, thanks ***and yes, it would be my choice as well to use the empty holes and fill with hardware, it can only help not hurt!!! 🤠
This is probably the same as a standard fifth wheel hitch when it comes to short bed trucks. I would still recommend some sort of slider hitch or even the Andersen hitch for short beds. This obviously works but like any hitch in a short bed it will limit how close you can get to a 90 degree when backing. Thanks for watching. 👍🏼
Hehehe I went from the Anderson to the Reese when I got my new 2022 solitude S class 2930. Lippert the people who makes the frames for Grand Design and for a Lotta other people owns Rees goose box. So I kind of think Rees will not be adding a bunch of stuff or Lippert will not do anything for anybody else. I did the safety chain with hooks on both ends. I got the 16 for my unit, pin weight is 2100. And ONLY thing is the hook up. I have a long bed with a hard roll up cover. It sits high so I can’t see the ball. I LIKE IT and the wife likes it. Happy Wife, Happy life.
Nice. Try using the tennis ball truck I talk about at the end of the video for hitching up. I nail it every time on the first try now using those Reese tower power tennis balls. 👍🏼
I have the Lippert AirRide and for my pin weight I know I need 72 LBS so I always add air to 72 lbs. before I even hookup and I use a small Dwelt compressor only because all me tools are dewalt 20 volt but I do have a Viair 200 psi with tank built in and hard wired up to the batteries just incase.
Great video. Just a note, Reese is coming out with a model that will work on the Lippert Rhino box, per Reese it is supposed to be available before the end of 2022.
Great vid. I am installing mine this weekend. Would really appreciate any great tips on how to reverse the safety chains. In terms of what hardware to buy, etc. so that I don’t compromise the safety. Also, if there was a way to have it, be a hook on each side that would be great, as then I could detach it from my bedside easily.
Thank you i appreciate it! You just got to get creative I suppose. Cant say if anything ever happened that I’m in the right or cleared if there was an investigation because the chain swap didn’t pan out. Mostly just common sense me…. it’s a combination of shackles we use on my tug boat plus eye bolts off my old Andersen hitch. Knowing this for me I know I didn’t compromise any safety concerns using those parts. But again I am taking the risk technically I guess since it’s not how it was designed.
Thanks for the great video. We have the 2023 solitude 346 fls-r that came stock with the moryde pinbox. Using the companion slider on the b&w turnover ball in a 23 3500 ram dooley but will be switching to this set up before next season. I can't find any info on if this will mount up to the unit once the moryde is removed. 🤔. Interesting how you had to switch to the smaller washers on one side but not the other side. Anyhow,,, thanks again! This was just the info I needed.

I just got a Reese Goosebox installed, I unfortunately have to redo the installation because the RV dealer I purchased the 5r from swore they knew what they were doing! I always check the work of others when it's a critical installation like this , they didn't even want to install the safety Chains? Said they are not needed in SD. When I looked at the box post install they didn't use the washers that came with it, and when I threw my torque wrench on it I was able to get a click at 100f lbs? Yeah buddy that was safe when I'm going through the Rockies next week. Besides that it does handle 👍 now I have to wait for the replacement parts to install it correctly before I leave Sturgis. I only towed it 15 miles with the bad install, maybe I should get my $200 back they charged me to put it on the camper I purchased?
Have you sold your Anderson hitch. I am taking before watching the whole video. I am going to watch the whole video because I am deciding which way to go. I am glad I came across your video. Maybe at the end I know if I am going to do the same thing or buy a Anderson hitch
Yes I did sell my Anderson. Still have no issue with that setup either. Just a matter of what works best for you, or what you think is better suited for your rig and truck. Or even just a matter of money. I think you will feel pretty good which ever route you go. 👍🏼
Great video. I really like the reverse chain hook up. I'm having some issues with getting air into the air bag. It looks like there's no air in there, but my battery power air pump shows over 50 psi when I run it.
Interesting. I know the mistake I made which I talk about in the video was not realizing I needed to actually let air out to get the bar lined up properly vs putting air in.
Great video!!! The company that installed my turn over ball didn’t get it centered so I have a gap on one side tight on the other, this is on my Ford F250 platinum. I don’t trust them install the Reese so I’m going to try it myself. I noticed the video is 29 minutes is that the actual time for the install with editing? Thanks
The install doesn’t take long. Maybe an hour total with removing the old one, getting the new one lined up, tightening everything down. Not difficult unless you run into some king of issue.
Where did you get the i-bolts and clevis pin couplers that were strong enough for allowing you to flip the chains hookup? The chains are rated to 20k pounds per Curt/Reese and I couldn't find eyebolts that were rated more than 2.5k pounds direct pull, and even less with an angled pull, which would be the case with your hook up. Also, finding clevis pin couplers rated high enough would require a massive coupler that these chains won't fit through. Yours look pretty small. Thanks and great video.
Great install tips. I’m happy with the Andersen Hitch but I will say if I had a big boy rv like you guys, I’d have a lot more faith in a steel hitch and go with the Goosebox or a gen Y.
Yeah I still recommend the Andersen to people as well, no issues with it at all. This just seemed like the next step up for that style towing. Been really happy with it so far! 👍🏼
Great video, thank you! One question though, do u have any tips for getting it into the bed of the truck? I just got one of these it weighs over 200 lbs! It is currently sitting in my garage. Even with help, I’m thinking it is going to be tough to pick this thing up high enough to get it into the bed.
Thanks 😊 I guess it depends on your level of fitness and that of who ever is helping. It will probably be easier to open the box first and take it out then put it up in the truck. I don’t see it being that hard for two people, three people should be a breeze. If not…Forklift, chain fall, not sure hahaha Good luck and I appreciate you watching 👍🏼
I really like both, Andersen did me well over the years. I would say the Reese Goose Box feels like a little bit safer more robust system vs the Andersen as well as a smoother ride. Hitching probably easier with the Andersen but I’ve worked out a system with the Goose Box now. Appreciate you watching 👍🏼
@@WhyWait it was delivered yesterday, the same day I found and responded to your video. You answered a lot of the questions that I had and your tips answered questions that would arise in the future. Hi, Thinking about purchasing a 20k Reese. I own a 99 Ford SuperDuty F350, 8’ bed crew cab. I have a rails in the bed from the old 5wheel hitch. What do I need or should use for a ball? If I kept the rails I would use a 4 point type steel bracket with a ball in the middle. I just need some advice before I purchase the Reese. Thank you Brian
Hey Brian. I would hate to steer you in the wrong direction not really knowing your setup and it’s not like I work for Reese or something. I would reach out and contact Reese with any specific questions or even Etrailer.com. They have great experts on their website who answer all questions like that. Here’s a link below. Good luck. www.etrailer.com/Gooseneck-and-Fifth-Wheel-Adapters/Reese/RP85FR.html
@@WhyWait Thanks. I’ve noticed that when I’m not hooked up the viewer bar for the airbag is in the middle but when I am hooked up that isn’t in the middle. Is that how it’s supposed to work?
@@rondelrosario3329 when your hooked up the viewer bar should be in the middle, maybe around 50psi, just depends on your setup. So after you hitch up adjust the air so it’s in the middle. You may have to add or remove air to accomplish this.
I have a short bed Super Duty, so I have to use a slider 5th wheel hitch, Does the Goose Box bring the camper back so I'd have the same about of cab clearance as I would with my slider in the rear position to back the trailer?
No not really. In fact this Goose box style pin box brought the camper a little closer to the back of my truck vs the Andersen hitch I use to use. I have a F-450 8 foot bed so it’s not an issue for me but if you have a short bed truck this probably isn’t the best way to go. I think a slider hitch or even the Andersen hitch is the way to go. I did full time for 3 years with the Andersen Hitch and loved it. Plus it does move the camper further back for more room. Good for short bed trucks. ua-cam.com/video/QeAf4qgQ_Mo/v-deo.html
You can purchase it with or without chains. I think for the most part it comes without. Here’s a link to just the safety chains on Amazon too. Thanks for watching www.amazon.com/dp/B01C5IX3BC/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_api_gl_i_88WYS9CDFA53FRJBTCXM?linkCode=ml2&tag=whywait-20
Yeah I’ve talked to some people who have it and I’ve seen it. The biggest change seemed to be the air bag fill location on top so the access is easier but they dropped still dropped the ball because it’s still hard to get certain air chuck hookups onto it. They didn’t leave enough room. But I believe they adjusted the backend to leave more clearance for the truck bed rails.
What's your RV's GVW? I've got a 2019 Forest River Wolfpack 325pack13 with 14,200# GVW..Do you think I could get away with the 16k goosebox or should I spend the extra $900 for the 20k goosebox? Wont hold you too your opinion legally just trying to avoid overseas customer service advice, Lol
Mine RV is 16k GVWR but we are over that with our upgraded axles and suspension. It seems to me that you would have plenty of clearance to get the 16k Goosebox and be good.
Nope I doubt it! I live in my RV so they would have a hard time putting the slides in and stealing it from us hahaha I don’t use the padlock to deter theft, it’s used by most Reese owners as a safety back measure when towing in the slight chance the Gooseneck was to come up off the ball. With the coupler locked with a padlock it can’t. 👍🏼
It would definitely help Bill. I think over time they see feedback from people and try to improve with each new generation Reese that comes out. Thanks for watching 👍🏼
@@DixieNormas i think you missed a few mechanical concepts on vertical and torsion stress and design of a fifth wheel frame vs a real gooseneck trailer. Reese is the property of Lippert and they know that the failures will appear after the frame warranty and most of the owners will not noticed it.
@@DixieNormas you need to get back to school …..a fifth wheel frame is not designed for gooseneck. @@BobBob-dx5jx Actually, I'm an engineer too and you're applying the wrong logic here. Well, you're applying no logic but that's another story. I drive a 2022 3/4 ton Chevy. Is it okay to have a B&W ball with the handle on it to lock it down?
Another tip. Don't air the air bag up, with the hitch latch cable pulled back in the open position. The air bag will, when full of air, put a bunch of pressure on it as the lower section rotates downward, and be a real pain to get it released so it will latch. Yeah I still recommend the Andersen to people as well, no issues with it at all. This just seemed like the next step up for that style towing. Been really happy with it so far! 👍🏼
I loved mine! Took all the bumps out. New camper doesn't fit.
I got a 16k for sale.
Oh man that’s too bad. Hopefully you are able to sell it though 👍🏼
Thanks. Great video. Good tips
Appreciate that. Thanks for watching 👍🏼
Also have Anderson- no complaints- of course this seems more convenient- how do u compare the two??
I really like both, Andersen did me well over the years. I would say the Reese Goose Box feels like a little bit safer more robust system vs the Andersen as well as a smoother ride. Hitching probably easier with the Andersen but I’ve worked out a system with the Goose Box now. Appreciate you watching 👍🏼
Great video!
Thanks. Do you have a Reese or thinking about getting one?
@@WhyWait it was delivered yesterday, the same day I found and responded to your video.
You answered a lot of the questions that I had and your tips answered questions that would arise in the future. My son-in-law and I are installing it tomorrow. Once again, thank you for a great informative video.
@@Nose77904 nice! You’ll definitely love it. Here’s another video where I go over some tips for hitching with it and review after using it longer. REESE GOOSE BOX REVIEW AFTER 1 YEAR (Pros & Cons, Plus Tips for Easy Hitching)

Hi,
Thinking about purchasing a 20k Reese.
Thank you
Brian
Hey Brian. I would hate to steer you in the wrong direction not really knowing your setup and it’s not like I work for Reese or something. I would reach out and contact Reese with any specific questions or even Etrailer.com. They have great experts on their website who answer all questions like that. Here’s a link below. Good luck.

Question for you about the extension 6ft air extension hose…do you keep it always connected all the time or do you remove it each time?
I’ve always just kept it connected, just an easier way to air up anytime for me.
You may have to add or remove air to accomplish this.
what size were the eye nuts you put on the pin box? Thanks love the video. Just got the goosebox 20k
also by the way older video the new reesebox does work with the Rhino
Yes, your right, I saw that the new gen 3 Reesebox will work with those pin boxes.
Thanks, appreciate that.
I’m not exactly sure on the eye nuts, they were from my old Andersen Hitch setup.

Get a gen y offset ball
Awesome video! Does it come with chains or do you have to purchase them separately?
You can purchase it with or without chains. I think for the most part it comes without. Here’s a link to just the safety chains on Amazon too. Thanks for watching

@@WhyWait Thanks so much!
Where did you find the eye nuts rated to handle the weight
They are from my old Anderson Hitch setup. 👍🏼

I really like the extended air hose, but with the Gen II I still have to depress the shrader valve. Please show how you eliminated this issue.
Any Thoughts on the ne GEN 3 version?
Yeah I’ve talked to some people who have it and I’ve seen it. The biggest change seemed to be the air bag fill location on top so the access is easier but they dropped still dropped the ball because it’s still hard to get certain air chuck hookups onto it. They didn’t leave enough room.
But I believe they adjusted the backend to leave more clearance for the truck bed rails.
I have a 5th wheel that weighs 19300. Will the 20K be enough?
Well I guess technically that’s the idea but I would contact Reese to make sure if you’re concerned. 👍🏼
Hey man do you have a link to the I bolts you used?
Not sure what bolts your referencing exactly.
The I bolts you used to reverse the chains
@@ianfrench2201 oh ok, most of it comes from my old Andersen Hitch setup and the schackles are from my work.
Oh ok I was just curious if they were 1/2” thread or something else
Are there any grease zerts on the the new gen 3 20k
I believe just the one and the same spot as the gen 2 version I have. Not positive though
New sub! Liked 😛🌞😮😊
Would anyone stealing a fifth wheel actually be deterred by a padlock on the goose box?
Nope I doubt it! I live in my RV so they would have a hard time putting the slides in and stealing it from us hahaha
I don’t use the padlock to deter theft, it’s used by most Reese owners as a safety back measure when towing in the slight chance the Gooseneck was to come up off the ball. With the coupler locked with a padlock it can’t. 👍🏼
grind a flat spot on the washer .
Oh man, I full time RV. Thanks to storage issues and weight capacity I can’t have cool toys like grinders. Lol
Reese should paint the bar in the window from the factory
It would definitely help Bill. I think over time they see feedback from people and try to improve with each new generation Reese that comes out. Thanks for watching 👍🏼
That would cost an extra $100.00 bucks :)
Aren't you required to run Safety chains with a gooseneck?
Yup, in most all states it’s required. I run them, I always did with my Andersen hitch for over 3 years and I do with this Reese as well.
@@WhyWait I see a lot of videos with people not using chains. I hope I didn't offend you
@@paullutz457 oh no not at all, hope my comment didn’t come off wrong 😁
Pretty sure you mean a 15/16" wrench. Lol!
Oh man, what did I accidentally say?
Really bad for torsion stress applied to the frame…….
Wrong…. Exact same stress as the original pin box. This is the reason Lipert has approved this box.
@@DixieNormas i think you missed a few mechanical concepts on vertical and torsion stress and design of a fifth wheel frame vs a real gooseneck trailer. Reese is the property of Lippert and they know that the failures will appear after the frame warranty and most of the owners will not noticed it.
@@BobBob-dx5jx 🤣🤣🤣 sad thing is people will read your idiocy and believe it.
@@DixieNormas you need to get back to school …..a fifth wheel frame is not designed for gooseneck. You’re more than welcome to challenge me on mechanical engineering, i’m an engineer so you want me to send you a draft of how stress vertically and torsion are applied?! You are probably sponsored by them and you don’t have any datas to support your point…….
@@BobBob-dx5jx Actually, I'm an engineer too and you're applying the wrong logic here. Well, you're applying no logic but that's another story. This isn't a true "gooseneck", but just a standard pinbox application that attaches to a goose ball. The exact same forces are applied (in this application) that would be using a standard 5th wheel plate. But feel free to keep arguing with me here since you clearly are smarter than people that actually work in this industry. "Engineers" like you are the reason I hate engineers.
Our 94716 lasted 3 trips...JUNK PRODUCT!!!. Won't take air ...blows by from the valve. PEOPLE BEWARE.
