Back in 1971 my foster mom made lime jello in a round jello mold. In the jello was finely chopped celery, finely shredded carrots, chopped nuts, and I don't remember what else, but I do remember it was awesome!!! I'm doing low carb at the moment, so I think sugar free would make a delightful treat.

My-T- Fine pudding was the staple dessert in our house. Yes, we had Jell-O, but thankfully, we kept it plain served with whipped cream.

Thank you so much. I have spent the last two days looking for this exact recipe. Should have searched UA-cam first. If I am remembering correctly, my mom would blend in only 6ozs of cream cheese. The remaining 2ozs were smashed it in to very tiny chunks, spread out on a small plate, and refrigerated. After refrigerating the Jello mix for about an hour, she would gently stir in the 2ozs of chunked cream cheese and refrigerate until set. Those tiny burst of cream cheese were heavenly.

My mother made Watergate salad with lime Jell-O, cottage cheese, pineapple and pecans.
My grandmother would usually make a variety of Jell-O with encased canned pear halves and/or shredded carrots. She'd always serve it with a dollop of mayonnaise. Somehow, it worked well together.
I've not eaten either Jell-O salad in decades.

My mom still makes "green salad" for Thanksgiving and Christmas! She doesn't add coconut, but it is lime jello, cream cheese, mayo and pineapple and we top it with either whipped cream or mayo, it has long been either a love/hate part of the menu, but I love it!

The jello recipe I used to eat didn’t any cream cheese or mayo, it was transparent. But that sounds very good to me, I’d be on the side looking forward to the “green salad!”

This looks great! My 8 year old grandson will love it because he loves sherbet. My Mom made a jello salad that was a hit in the 70’s. It had strawberry jello, frozen strawberries dissolved in it, bananas, pecans and a middle layer of sour cream. I think some people added pineapple to it…not sure. Thanks for the memories!

They used to make that at MCL cafeteria’s in Indiana in the 1960’s and 1970’s. I LOVED it! They cut it into bricks about 3 inches high and topped with whipped cream. They had green, orange and pink. They had a version that had cottage cheese mixed in and it was fabulous! Thanks for the lovely memory.

I was born and raised in Europe therefore Jell-O was not a thing to me until I came to the USA.
I have been always fascinated by vintage lifestyle, especially when it comes to cooking and I read a lot about American cooking style from the past.
Jell-O was a staple and considered quite a fancy ingredient while entertaining. I Love history!

Yum-sounds so delicious. I grew up in the 60’s-born in 1955. My mother and
both my grandmothers made a wonderful lime congealed salad. There was no coconut in this salad-the recipe consisted of lime jello, cream cheese, mayonnaise, pineapple, chopped pecans and miniature marshmallows-sometimes they left out the marshmallows-I always loved it either way!!! Sure wish I had some right now.

I think my parents' generation just missed the jelly and jello craze. Although my grandparents always did have packets of jelly and the like in storage. Rarely, if ever used after the grandkids came along, I feel.
My granny passed away last year and as we cleaned out her kitchen cupboards, indeed what we found was a bunch of (very old!!) boxes and packets of jelly and custard desserts. After watching you make this, I'm very tempted to find me some jello and try my hand at it. Looks lovely!!

Thank you for this recipe! I'm going to make it for Thanksgiving and want to put it in a graham crust. My Grandma would make Jello desserts at every holiday! I remember at Easter she would use egg shaped molds and fill them with lime or lemon jello, add shredded carrot or cabbage to it, serve it on individual plates on a leaf of lettuce and top it with a dollop of mayonnaise. And of course there was always the jello salads with walnuts or fruit cocktail. I have a big box full of my mothers very old cookbooks, and I will be looking for more salad recipes! Good memories, thank you! Have a Happy Thanksgiving :) to everyone!

Kevin, I think your mother would be very proud that you are putting this out here for all of us to enjoy! My maternal grandmother would call us and tell us that were to come in for whatever meal she was making. Any protest was met with "But I've set Jell-o!" Like your mother, she would have all sorts of concoctions for us. I was never fond of her veggie mixes. I always thought that was just a mean way to get us to eat vegetabes! In a twist, I am now near-vegetarian. LOL Wonderful memories.

Thank you Kevin, for this ‘Happy Hour” of jello salads!! It was fun.Your orange jello dessert popped up on my screen the other day, My son, passing by spotted the thumbnail , and went right out and got a box of orange jello!! Surprised, I asked what is this for? and he replied, its for you to make that orange dessert. Well, i didn’t get a chance to watch until now..My Vita-mix is packed away for lack of counter-space. I plan use my stand mixer to whip it into a mousse. Instead of ice cubes, I will use ice water and chill mixture unti it starts to thicken then whip,. Wish me luck. I remember there seemed to be endless ways to make jello salad in those days. I'm sure that we had some style of jello salad at least once a week. It was part of my birthday party menu growing up. My mom made the basic fruit cocktail jello salad, and a cranberry orange cream cheese one for Thanksgiving. The cream cheese was more in chunks, and I think she put chopped walnuts in also. I remember the "Broken Glass" jello salad at Christmas, whipped cream -cream cheesy with chunks of different colored jello. The lime green salad you mentioned earlier in the video sometimes had cabbage and carrots in addition to the coconut. Fun childhood memories.♥️

We always made black cherry jello or cherry jello with walnuts and bananas. Make the 1 large box jello as per instructions and add walnut pieces and banana slices ( as much or as little as you like, we added 2C walnuts and 3-4 sliced bananas to the jello) and make sure everything is covered with the jello liquid so bananas don't get brown ( it will all float on the top of the jello). Chill and serve with whipped cream! When I got older, I let the jello set about 1/2 way and then stirred in the bananas and walnuts so they were in the whole bowl of jello, not just on the top! (People used to eat off all the fruit and nuts off the top and just plain jello was left!!) Use the mandarin oranges in the little cans, they taste great! I make my Ambrosia with them all the time! God Bless!

My mom made one with Bing Cherry Jello. You subbed in 1 glass of red wine for one of the cups of water. You added 1 can of Bing Cherries and 1/2 can of their juice instead of that amount of water. Then, you add 1/2 cup of Slivered Almonds.
I still make this one at Thanksgiving sometimes. It sort of serves the same purpose as cranberry sauce and I like the cherries and the crunch of the almonds.
She would also make one with lime jello that had cottage cheese and grated carrot in it.

The first thing I ever learned to cook in school cooking class was similar to this orange jello dessert of yours. It was called Citrus Whip. It's still makes my mouth water when I think of it. You might like to try slotting in a quarter cup of fresh lemon juice (substituted into the cold water). It will give the Orange flavour a wonderful tang.

Aunt Helen made one with lime jello and cottage cheese, and pineapple. Not my favorite! Mom made one that we all loved. Strawberry and lemon jello mixed, with strawberries, pineapple, and mixed berries. She put half of the mix in a fancy mold and let it set. Then she spread a layer of sour cream, and poured the rest of the jello on top. Then she turned it out on a fancy platter! Divine!

My grandma use to make lime jello with celery slices in it. Its so wierd but something comforting for mr. Memories. Lol my mom sometimes makes jello with fruit cocktail in it or the fruit with the flavor. When she feels creative, she'll make jello and mix cool whip in it and put it in a pie crust. I recently made one with just strawberry jello and condenced milk mixed and put in a pie crust. Was pretty yummy.

Nice ..so do u mix condensed milk/cool whip with the jello n leave it to set in the fridge or keep it on top ?

I just opened a pk of jello poured it in a bowl, dumped a can of condenced milk and then the cool whip. And mixed it with my hand mixer and and put it in a store bought pie crust. .. she also makes one with strawberry jello, those tiny orzo rice noodles, a can of frozen strawberrys( save the juice) and a can of fruit cocktail ( save the juice) mix it all with cool whip and add a little of the juices as ya want. It's really yummy. I was surprised because its so light but a nice dessert. Reminds me of a Chinese style rice pudding. Very light.

    Do you remember Jello 1-2-3?
And I still love Watergate salad!
My mom made jello salads and put them into those copper, (probably just tin) molds, and she’d turn them out on a bed of iceberg lettuce!

That's great! Jello was a staple in out 60's and 70's house. I remember orange jello salad with dream whip, mayonnaise, pineapple odd combination but oh so good! I'll have to try this one. Thanks!

Hi Kevin .Ohio here. I'm a new subscriber and have already tried 3 of your recipes. Delicious and a bit of fancy ..I love it! My husband is more of a lemon lover compared to orange so I switched the jello recipe from orange to lemon. Light .creamy..cool and slightly decadent. I really enjoy your channel. Oh and ..I am so happy to hear that you and Mr Fox spread your love and generosity to Blinkie's mother. My heart feels for her.

My grandmother taught me to make it in a double boiler. First arrange mandarins in a bundt mold, and put it in the freezer so the oranges stick. Then melt the 16 oz cream cheese in a double boiler, add the 6 oz jello powder and dissolve it in the hot melted cream cheese...add 1 1/2 C boiling water...whisk it all well.
She added 1 C cold whipping cream and 1 C cold water, whisk it in well...then pour it in the frozen bundt cake mold. That goes into the fridge to chill. Then once that was set she'd make regular jello with fruit salad and pour it over the set cream cheese mix. In the fridge to set again.
To release the mold she filled a large bowl with hot water and dunk the bundt pan in it for 3 seconds before flipping it out.

my mom in law (born in 1928) was also called the Jello queen. You could tell the formality of the dinner by what type of Jello "salad" (I think it's funny we call them salads) she made. Plain Jello was whipped and various fruits etc could be added, my kids loved it because it was definitely more of a dessert with the main course than an actual salad. I read that Jello became so popular at a certain time because it meant you had a refrigerator (instead of an ice box) so it was bit of a status symbol to serve Jellos. I loved all of them with the exception of my moms "perfection salad" which was more of a clear aspic with veggies and olives suspended in it, so ghastly~ Don't know how that one became popular, lol. Thanks for sharing your food memories I was a little kid in the 60's too. 😀

My quick and simple jello mix is: 1- 3 ounce pkg of raspberry jello and 1 cup of boiling water- when thoroughly dissolved add 1 can of cranberry whole berry sauce. That's it. Another is Orange jello with grated carrots - that's it! I keep/have eliminated, most of the cream cheese, whipping cream etc to keep calories, fat down.

I've done quite a few Jell-O salads for dinner parties. They always make people laugh and then they remember how much they like it. But for me I love and still make my family's orange and carrot salad. Orange Jell-O and grated carrot. Trick is to grate the carrot into the Jell-O while it is still hot. The carrot takes in the sweetness. When it is half set, mix a little so the carrot is evenly distributed. It's served as a side dish. Easter or BBQ.
