I wonder if certain tire setups (more/less sidewall, psi, etc) will help prolong the life of the wheel by absorbing more impact

For sure it can, because looking at it from the opposite end, an improper setup can negatively affect your wheel/tire's longevity. Also, in terms of sidewall with the wheel in mind specifically, your tire is your cushion, less cushion (smaller sidewall) means your wheel is more prone to damage.
