- Beginners Guide to Portraits in Oils.
Oil Painting Portrait of Baby Max 12 x 9"... includes real-time footage. Sharing my techniques and tips on how I develop the painting through 3 different simple colour stages. How to mix Skin Tones and more.
Max is my great, great Nephew. Max was born on 18th October 2022, he is Charlotte and Daniel's little ray of sunshine. He's a happy, smiley, content baby and the whole family adore him. He makes everyone smile, he's such a cheek character. His favourite thing at the moment is to pull everyone's glasses off 😂 Charlotte was told that she may not be able to have children so after finding out she was having a baby, a 99 hour labour and an emergency caesarean, it is safe to say Max is their little miracle.
My passion is to help you to create realistic and soulful artwork. If you found this video useful, please give it a like. Be sure to comment and say hello and let me know what kind of videos you'd like to see

Here is a Material list for you: I tend to use a mix of Artist's quality Windsor & Newton and Michael Harding paints. The latter being my favourite choice as he makes them like the old masters did many years ago.
Please note: if you are just starting out, and price of materials are an issue, I would recommend the Windsor & Newton *Winton series... these have the same quality pigment as the Winsor & Newton Artists series but less of it, there are more fillers and extenders in them but the quality is still there at a smaller cost... just click on any link below and search for them as the cheaper option. The more expensive option below, the benefits are, they last longer as they are super rich in pigment and they are amazing to work with.

Wow! I’ve heard that babies and young children are the most difficult to capture their youthfulness and realism yet you nail it each time. Your detailed explanation while you would is do very helpful!
Thank you Mary, painting Children is a real joy, as the energy is where spiritually we as adults seek to return. I focus on connecting to energy and the details just happen some how. All the very best with your art journey. 🙏
You are the God of beginners portrait painting artists
Thank you so much for watching the video, thrilled you enjoyed it. 🙏
Dave, this was a delightful learning experience! Most people would shy away from doing portraits, but you've given us a measure of how it's done! I find it useful when the reference photo is left visible for comparison. I also read little Max's bio! What a heartwarming story! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for the great feedback, good to know that the video comes across well. Thanks for reading the Bio, he is a special child for sure. Thanks for watch... much appreciated. 😊🙏
Dave, I am a big fan and admirer of your arts and the way you share it with us. In this video you wanted to show us the three color stages and your showing and explanation made it easy to understand. So: mission accomplished.
But from my point of view this video is the first one in which you didn't catch the expression of the reference. Actually the foto is on the small line between "sweet baby" and "ugly baby" and hardly manages to stay on the " sweet" side. The painted picture fell on the " ugly" side. Reasons for that? I propose: the painted face seems to be longer, the foto-face rounder. The pupils of the foto-eyes seem to be darker, the eye-whites smaller than the painted version. Finally the mouth: on the foto the better part of the upper lip seem to lie in the shadow and the under lip seems to be thicker than in its painted version.
I write this knowing very well that I never could such a beautiful oil painting. But I hope you can accept my remarks. And: I am sure that the "real" Max, not the Foto- Max or the painted Max, is a baby as adorable as nearly every other baby.
Beautiful.
Thank you Lisa! Thanks for watching. 😊🙏
Thank you a very useful video for me. I have been given an old Polaroid photo of my nephew who died at 6 weeks of SIDS. The photo is not in good condition now but I want to try and paint him for my sister-in-law. Obviously it’s black and white but the tones are mostly there. I’ve been drawing him with the pastel pencils , now I will attempt it in oils. I have done many portraits, adults and children so I’m hopeful. Your videos are inspiring.
Hi Lynn, thrilled you find my videos inspiring... sorry to hear the tragic death of you nephew, heart breaking.🙏 Wishing you every success with your painting project. Take care and thanks for watching my videos. 🙏

What do you use to do the sketch graphite or charcoal?
Thanks for the question Patricio... I use a HB graphite pencil... then I ghost the outline by lightly going over it with a Faber Castell Eraser.. All the best 🙏
What difference do you find between oil and pastels? Given a choice to choose only one...which one do you choose? Why?
Interesting question. Oils are more versatile and can achieve dynamic results. Pastels are convenient, no cleaning of brushes and no fumes to deal with. They are wonderful to use at any time and achieve realistic results.
I would say Pastels now as I have for the past 6 years really focused my attention are developing my skills.
Any kind of pencil can be use in sketching before start using the oil paint sir?
Hi there, I use a HB or B graphite pencil. Thanks for watching 🙏
