The Grand Highlander is a home run for Toyota, it is the only 3-row SUV in this size than can get close to 40mpg, (36 to be exact), and with the hybrid max it is the only option to combine the space, power and torque with mpg better than its competitors, plus the pricing is super aggressive which I absolutely love
Yeah, now I wonder how long we'll actually have to wait to get our hands on these. Are we talking about a 2 year waitlist?
Honda pilot dude
It won’t get 36 to be exact. Those are always exaggerated. Maybe close to 30 if your lucky
+10K dealer adjustment :p (for real)
The 3rd row space is actually impressive for something that can get 30 mpg+
Should check out sienna. Even bigger 3rd row, 36mgp
@@dcman4902
nope. Doesn’t exist lol. At least at my local dealers
@@dcman4902 I had a 2022 sienna XLE AWD. Could only get 32 mpg mixed driving.
But for the size….comfort….four zone climate control….it was amazing.
@@americandude3825 gotta drive well and use less air conditioning, also reduce drag and don’t put any bikes on top etc.
@@brq44 agreed. When I went the speed limit it was amazing.
My dream car would be this level of utility combined with the driving experience of the Mazda CX90. That said this will crush the CX90, as lovely as it is, in the market because cargo and passenger space are king when it comes to cars that are generally pulling family duty
The pilot and explorer both balance
@@naveenthemachine the explorer is barley bigger on the inside than the regular Highlander cos of its RWD nature. It does drive very well tho. The Pilot is closer in size and will probably handle better but you get better performance and mpg with the GH
@@alwaysiyi272 true.
I like the cx90, but they need to make a better off road version
@@naveenthemachine pilot is smaller inside and it has $hitty fuel economy
I love these guys' reviews - very cordial &
pleasant presentation while being informative.
@12:15 The first car to have an open cubby space in front of the passenger was the Toyota Highlander back in 2014. Though technically the Toyota Sienna introduced that concept first in 2011 (albeit behind a lid that opened with a button)
The extent the American buyer will go to avoid the Sienna 😂
My first car was a Sienna and I really liked it, it had decent ground clearance, but with the new one, it's so low that it pushes you towards the SUV if you plan on driving on a dirt road or deep snow
If you can even find a Sienna…
@@adamregnier2532 just hang out with them moms 😄
More like Siennas are impossible to find.
Why are you so worried about what other people buy? Last time I checked we lived in America, where you’re free to buy whatever the hell you want.
Instead of always worrying about what other people do, enjoy your own sienna.
Would be nice if they made a plug-in version. The cx-90 has a plug-in version, but the Grand Highlander (aka Rav4 XL, lol!) has more 3rd row room.
Not bad, I need to replace my 2018 Atlas which surprisingly has been really solid. I'm trying to decide between this the CX-90 and the Hybrid Explorer.
Replace a 2018? Is it a lease? I have a 2008 Suv is still going strong. With the current rates these new car purchases hurt the pocket book
You can't lease for 5 years
Here with a 2018 atlas 2.0T fwd. Base model. Surprisingly solid here too. Reliable too. Maybe because the transmission across the entire VW lineup is actually made in Japan?
Also looking at the CX-90, but one reason being the AWD. Northern US snow is something FWD is not going to be good for. It kept on slipping up the hill we live on.
@@afzalshaikh2128 It's not a lease, I actually bought it in November of 2017 it's paid off. It's actually my wife's and she wants something a little newer. The Atlas though has great usable space.
@@RezandJen😂 get rid of “Jen” instead, before she eventually drives you to bankruptcy.
19:04 Roman interrupting to provide incorrect information. The Hybrid Max ends at $58k before destination. Andre was correct.
Tell me about it!
Good to see Toyota using that Subaru connection. We’ve owned an Ascent for a few years now and it has been great. If safety is the same I would trade just to get the hybrid max.
Thanks for reviewing the base hybrid!
Every Honda of the mid 00's had that little passenger shelf space also. I love it in my Ridgeline and in my old CRV
FIrst vehicle I saw it in was in a 2002 Civic Si Hatch. It had that and the manual transmission shifter coming out of the dash right under the radio.
In my opinion how Toyota is doing their AWD system is representative of the future. Use the engine + generator to maintain your battery at proper state of charge. Use pure current regulation from battery directed to drive motors in front/back to drive wheels to accomplish torque control. It's just physics people. Motors can provide instantaneous torque because their time constant is a fraction of the time constant for a mechanical drive system (engine + transmission + linkage). Time constant is just a standardized way of measuing how long it takes for a system to generate an output (shaft torque) in response to an input (change in throttle position).
I like my 2022 Toyota Highlander-L with the old school V6!
I hate the bad rep CVTs get. Funny enough it’s actually the perfect transmission
*ecvt
@@johna9033 lol there actually still good as well. Maybe not on all vehicles but from Toyotas there actually good.
I love dealer markups .... pushing more and more customers to Tesla and Subaru who completely avoid them !!!
Just bought a new Lexus hybrid SUV last month at MSRP and no add ons. No finance game as well, I paid cash in full.
At the beginning of the video it was mentioned that he didn’t really care the transmission of this XLE GHighlander, can you please explain in detailed as I am in the market for GHighlander XLE. Really appreciate it.
ECVT are different than CVT, they are much more linear and meant for hybrids, because no tranmission could keep up with torque
Wish that hybrid 2.5L was available in the new Tacoma.
CVT in Tacoma? No thank you
@@nighthawktheflyingspur It’s only 176 HP after the battery is depleted. Imagine towing a trailer up a long mountain in Colorado. You’d slow down to 25 mph on steep grades.

It’s a eCVT, nothing like a traditional CVT you find on a purely gas car.
@@smrtguy77777 The Toyota Hybrid CVT is not a belt driven unit. It is very strong. The issue is the ICE doesn’t make much power once the battery is depleted.
my 4 turbo $63k on lot; My neigbors MAX $68k he had to wait 7 months. At those prices the limited I got seemed like a slurge no way I could go up top the MAX, its just a toy....10 years to see gas savings? is a stretch, an added elec motor should be cheaper. MAX is also 600 to 800 LbS heavier
People this is not a traditional CVT. It is an eCVT with gear, it behave just like a automatic gearbox. I know because i have a new Lexus hybrid with the eCVT and another Lexus with a traditional 6 speed auto. The difference is really negligible.
I finally found the black wheels
The only negative I saw was the CVT. Also, sounds like the upper trim levels are well into Lexus RX territory. Prices are getting unreachable for a lot of people.
They're not *getting* unreachable, they *are* unreachable.
@@verificacionnecessario9190 I agree, but somehow they keep selling.
you didn't see (hear) it correctly though. e-CVT. No belts, its a drive unit with 2 motor generators (MG1, MG2).
@@LionRunner heard it loud and clear, very familiar with Toyotas hybrid system. It's a great system, cvt's or e-cvt or whatever you prefer to call it is just not most cars guys preference of transmissions.
The MAX GH has a six speed.
Imagine walking by, and seeing two guys crawling into the back seat of an SUV, holding a camera. Suspicious!
🤣🤣🤣 specially on pride month 🎉🎉
When we drive on highway only, does the hybrid works or only gas engine works ? I think 2.4 liter turbo or 2.5 non-turbo with 7 people and luggage is small engine for a long trip. How many horse power when driving only on highway? Any advices or explanation. Thanks
Love the Highlander, I think to carry more than 4 medium-large build men you will need a full-size SUV - thinking Suburban or ideally a full-size van - is Sprinter the only one?
I feel like people often prioritize the ‘what if’ scenario when discussing a purchase. They may never do it but get it because they might one day have the want or need to.
@@ALMX5DP Agree, I have traditionally been a sedan guy, but thinking "99% of the time it is me and one other" in a pinch someone could fit in the backseat of my Honda Accord coupe, like a trip to the airport

My less Grand Highlander Hybrid has a port-installed Class III hitch
I don’t get it , you guys said is a 2.5 l and is the same engine on the tacoma 2.4l 🤔
The hybrid max version is pretty much the same. The standard hybrid is the same as other Toyota hybrids like the Sienna, Highlander, Venza, Lexus RX and NX hybrids.
I was hoping you guys would talk a lot more about the handling and performance.
It drives like any Toyota Highlander, it is just longer and wider. Don’t expect this to be a Mercedes GLS 63 or X7M.
Everyone keeps saying hydro flask as if that's a common term. I can figure it out, but I get the sense that the presentation used that term so all the reviewers are too 🙂
Found out xle does not have parking sensors. For such a big vehicle with limited sight lines around vehicle not having sensors is a big big fail especially if children walk around car. Limited trim comes with sensors. Shame Toyota cut cost on this safety feature for the more affordable xle trim.
Toyota unveiling new cars in Hawai'i makes me giggle. I can't think of anybody who hasn't owned a Toyota at some point back home. Makes sense to me, considering nearly every other car on the road is a Toyota Tacoma, 4Runner, Highlander, Rav4, Camry, or Corolla.
The HYBRID MAX gas motor makes 275 hp, but adds two EV motors for a combined 340 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. It's the most powerful Toyota sedan ever. It has almost 100 horsepower more than the base version. With the Hybrid Max you can expect a 0-60 mph time of about 5.5 seconds.Apr 15, 2023 I will never by another CVT transmission car again. I have a 2021 Highlander :( Looks like a Honda next time.
Toyota delivers once again....💪
Agreed
The dealerships disagree with this statement
If Toyota doesn’t increase its hybrid production these things will be pretty rare with long wait times and/or markups.
And you pay through the nose ~ Mazda looks better !
This thing looks so boring. And $50k is dumb
The 2015 highlander had a larger passenger shelf that had a pass through by the center console to route a cable.
After watching this, I am so glad I got the pilot
The Telujunk is not popular, and is definitely not it's competition
Great review Andre.
Why only a 1.25" receiver??
Between a Toyota cvt and a Honda/Nissan regular 9-speed auto-transmission… I’d go with regular 9-speed for now… Am I wrong?
Toyota hybrid system has been in production for the last 20+ years... Its in the prius and other vehicles... Its very reliable... I can't speak for hybrid max option though but the regular hybrid is proven...
Smaller trunk than my new Traverse, plus that under-cubby can't hold anything, the one in the Traverse is way bigger. 3rd row space is similar as well. Too big a vehicle for a CVT or 4-banger IMO. Glad I got my 2023, rumour is the 24 traverse will have the Turbo 4 banger like they're dropping into everything else. I do like the hybrid option, but could it be mated up with a V6?
Traverse is really bad !!
@@ibrahimbashir6634 I own one, that is absolutely untrue. Not one bad thing about it.

ECVT is a robust unit with a planetary gear arrangement, unlike a traditional CVT. The GH MAX will have a six speed.
What backpack bags are these?
BEST in class, will sell like hotcakes!
Agreed
2004 scion xb (my 2000 toyota bb) had that cubby in the passenger side.
You can get higher trim with 8 speed auto
6 spd auto
Please include an image of the driver door jamb sticker showing the payload for each vehicle. Always need three pieces of info: 1.MAX cargo carrying capacity (payload) 2. MAX tongue weight and 3. MAX towing (the least informative of the the three)
The Toyota Grand Highlander has more third row leg room than the larger Toyota Sequoia but the E-CVT Isn’t a good transmission on the Grand Highlander I’m not a fan of CVTs.
The eCVT behave just like a automatic, my wife’s new Lexus NX hybrid has an eCVT and my 17 Lexus ES350 has the 6 speed auto, the difference is really negligible. Go test drive one I
And it will surprise you.
In case you were not aware, an ECVT is much different than the traditional CVT, and is an extremely robust unit as it uses a planetary gear arrangement. I understand if you prefer shift points, and the GH MAX will offer a six speed in each trim level. I have a 22 Corolla Hybrid and don't mind the ECVT driving experience, and will purchase the GH hybrid Limited for fuel savings.
@@johna9033 exactly. Unfortunately Toyota is still using the term CVT in all their new hybrids. Also, I wish Lexus would offer the standard 2.5L hybrid in the TX series.
@JML Actually, Toyota clearly list the drive trains as ECVT's, and has for some time now.
@@johna9033 yes, I know that. But for someone who don’t know, they see a CVT and instantly diss it due to its bad reputation.
is this the first time grand highlander being sold, 2024? big fan of toyota here, never heard of grand highlander
Yep, 2024 is the roll-out
just imaging if the new Tacoma got 28 mpg like this :)
Toyota is killing it with consumption!!!
How does this not qualify as a full-size SUV?
Would you compare it to the new Mazda CX-90 with the straight 6?
Very different cars. The CX90 only seats 6 in the top trim and has a tiny third row and far less cargo room (less even behind the front row than a CRV!). On the flip side it looks better, has a lovely cabin, and would be more fun to drive. But for family duty, I don't think they compare and thats why I think the CX90 will be like the CX9. A daring of reviewers that customers stay away from.
Essentially an "SUV" that is as close to a minivan as you can get without the sliding doors?
Does this have the e-CVT or the CVT
ECVT on the hybrid. Gear transmission on non hybrids
My friends who got a brand new hybrid Highlander last year are a little sad now 😅
I will buy it in 2029.
😂
Ahhh, the average American car buyer nowadays.
Hay TFL, how come you guys can't compare this car to a Subaru Ascent?
The press embargo was literally lifted about 24 hours ago and they should have already done a comparison video with the Ascent?
I’ve never thought of my face as private.
Another unreachable Toyota on the market.
I like that the base model engine is the one I'd choose anyways. The CVT might be robust, but I just can't.
I couldn't trust that cvt either
It’s not a CVT it only performs that way, the fundamentals are totally different from the way it operates.
@@tails300 The way I understand it, Toyota uses planetary gearset CVT. So, you're correct, they function differently and I've heard of Priuses with 400k miles. My problem comes down to mid to heavy acceleration and passing. I get it, the engine can stay in the meat of the powerband if needed, I just hate how it sounds when that's happening.
Missing sensors reverse
😊 looks like I'll keep my 2022 4 runner. These are cute but ecvt..... nope😮😮😮
They need a suburban sized Toyota hybrid, it’s designed by Americans? They should understand
What an automaker needs to do is take a minivan, give it an SUV face, replace the rear slide doors with normal ones, and give it AWD and you would have the best SUV.
Honestly I expected way way more from the Grand Highlander when I heard about this originally. The styling is sub par. The space is way less than I would have thought. My 2020 Palisade has more room and doesn't look chubby.
The Palisade definitely does not have more room overall compared to the GH.
HybridMax has no bench seat option
are those Ape Case bags?
Telluride and palisade will be discontinued eventually !!
they should come with 19" wheels
I wish you would have compared it to the odyssey. Looks like they share a lot of components and design features.

Toyota ECVT is a completely different setup than a conventional CVT.
@@wyw201 exactly. After all these years looks like people doesn't know the difference.

they wanted to make the car with more cargo space? didn’t nailed it.. still too little of the space. if you planing to spend a weekend driving 4 adults and 2 kids. 3rd raw did gain more space, however, still not enough to accommodate adult, so didn’t nailed it there to.
to my taste, regular Highlander looks better, and do the same job..for less price. i was planning to purchase regular highlander hybrid later this summer, and im still going to.
but still, great review. short enough to not make it boring, long enough to show everything that’s important. thank you guys.
Looks kinda dated (and I’m a Toyota fan). I think if you need a 3rd row, a van is a better choice. Aloha!
Adding "Grand" to the name adds another $15k to the already inflated price.
Looks like a minivan with doors that open normally.
grand highlander or grand cherokee?
Toyota has already been selling a family-friendly vehicle that's larger than a Highlander. It's called the Sienna. That vehicle still makes more sense for families than this Grand Highlander.
They might do better with a R/T model in that price range 😅🤟👽🎬

They spent all that time with with second and third row seats and never once folded them ALL down so I could get a sense of the total cargo space, floor level, etc. These guys may do useful off-road tests, but their car reviews are always mediocre at best.
Also- no one buying a three row family SUV is sticking 6'2 adults in the third row. Anyone who buys these things (like me) uses them for small kids. If you need to put 8 adults in the car you're looking at the wrong class of vehicle.
I think it might be this trim because it kinda looks cheap and vanilla to me
The improvements on the Grand Highlander are nice compared to the Highlander, and while they are nicer than the Honda Pilot via the display, I'd still do what I did and get a Trailsport Pilot over this.
