  • Foul tarnished! Bring your maiden-less self over and sit down by the grace-the grace of all that is golden, the grace that will cleanse your filth and bring upon a new age for the lands between. Take up your mission, find and claim the throne, fill the world with madness, and reclaim the destined death denied to the world; join the fingers in their fight against the forces who seek to destroy them.
Hello ladies, gentlemen, everyone in between and beyond! Welcome to Souls Searching episode five, Elden Ring. Soul searching is the series where I examine what life lessons were learned or reinforced by a certain game and how I feel about the game in light of my experience with it. I will then look into the souls of the developers to see what goals they set for the release and determine whether they have met those goals.

While I like Elden Ring much more than the Dark Souls trilogy, I totally respect preferring them to Elden Ring's massive open world. It's both a perfection of the existing approach and a complete rethinking of the genre.

I think I have the same problem with this as I do with DS 2, just too many bosses, which leads to wildly different quality (primarily among the small side bosses) but still. I look at the mostly consistent quality of Sekiro and find myself seeking more experiences like that one.

What helped my mindset with the game was playing it as a Kings Field game. You find stuff and use all the weird items, vs using sword board fight till win mentality. I think thats why they didnt stop you from cheesing many many many of the bosses

That's fair and I do really appreciate all of the variety and wacky stuff they have in the game but it all feels like too much sometimes.

I guess the replayability just comes down to how long you think too long is for subsequent playthroughs. I just finished my 7th playthrough and have started an 8th, and these playthroughs pretty much all take about 18-20 hours now. That's a very manageable length for me to stick with one game, so that feels very replayable for me. I should say I'm at 393 hours right now, but will probably be over 400 hours after this weekend haha.
I do think it's quite funny that you seemed to have the same issue with Elden Ring that I had with Sekiro. We each went into the games expecting it to be something it didn't end up being. You can probably tell that Elden Ring not only met but surpassed my expectations as I now say it's my favourite game of all time.

Man, I cannot fathom playing through a single game that many times.

For context, I’ve played DS1 religiously and I’m currently on my second Elden Ring playthrough. I think you’re definitely onto something with the time it takes to do an Elden Ring playthrough, but to say a good player can blow through any of the Souls games in 2-5 hours while actually creating and optimizing a build is pretty inaccurate. It would probably take me 8-10 hours on a Dark Souls playthrough and I’ve beat the entire game without dying. I think with Souls games there’s not as much weapon variety for builds as well, whereas on my current Elden Ring arcane build I’ve switched weapons 3-4 times because of how damage scales as you get to late-game areas. I think with Elden Ring I’ve found a lot of replay value in just how much content there is. I’ll usually spend a lot of time scouring areas for dungeons and extra bosses, but I understand not everyone enjoys that as much. I think there’s pros and cons for each, just depends on preferences. I’m glad we have both versions of these games though, Elden Ring on a first playthrough is a magical experience.

For me it's the worst game to replay after 100 percenting it. How spread out it is really takes the wind out of the sails

I don't know if it's the worst game for me but I completely understand, the sheer size makes it very overwhelming.

That's totally fair. I appreciate the replay value the game offers and I fully recognize that I am in the minority with not replaying many games.

I hope they made something condense and flow well like most of dark souls 1

That would be an interesting move seeing as they have only gone bigger since then but I would welcome something like that too.

I literally put in over 200 hours in less than 3 months lol

Oh wow! I dont think I could ever dedicate that kind of time to one game. I have found that I very much leave a game behind when I feel I am done with it.
