  • For this shoot and run quick review, I had the chance to drive one of the most overlooked cars of the past-the Ford Turbo Coupe. The car rocks the same engine as the cult classic SVO Fox body with the 2.3 liter 4 banger turbocharged engine. It's a whole lot of fun while looking like grandma doing it! Thanks for watching and stay awesome. Social stuff below!

Man, Turbo Coupes are awesome. The SVO didn't flop, people didn't want to buy it because it cost more than a Mustang GT. The Turbo Coupe didn't flop either, they sold TONS of them. I owned one for 7 years (2003-2010), they are awesome cars and you can add a bunch of power with just a boost controller and 3" downpipe and exhaust. Problem is just the fact that they are so old now.
And who seriously thinks a Turbo Coupe looks like a GRANDMA CAR?

yes ...of course ur right.....alot of this mis information....gets tossed around....about what flopped and what didn't....I was actually already out of high school when this car was new....ive owned 3 of them....83...85...87....turbo bird......while i enjoy his vids....he simply says some things that dont add up....by lack of research or simply not even being alive at that time....he kind of hinted that this car was something New....Ford was doing.......yes....like back in very early 80s...both the non SVO Mustang GT....and Thunderbird...had 4 cin turbos.....i had a 1983......so i wish ...these younger kids....would stop....saying stuff....that isnt factual

Had a cat back system on it. Car sounded like shit but was fast as hell both of them where I'm looking for one now but they are hard to find now a days.

Saying that this and the SVO Mustang bombed out is an easy explanation for what was going on in the 80's. Manufacturers were concerned with impeding escalation of fuel prices that never occurred(thank Ronald Regan's foreign policy on that, although we're all paying for it today....), so V-8 cars like the Mustang GT, GM F-twins, Corvette, Impala SS and all sorts of giant SUVs started to take over market share leaving the Japanese to fiddle with smaller boosted engines(RX-7, Supra, 300ZX, 3000GT VR4, etc.). To all the Gen Yers calling this Turbo T-Bird "ugly", "low powered", etc., that's such a disrespectful attitude to one of many cars that helped to keep the wheels moving on the performance era we so greatly enjoy today. Say what you want, but when a 3600lb, 190hp 4 cylinder car can hit 143mph stock, I'd say that's pretty damn impressive. ThatDudeinBlue, keep up the wonderful reviews and interesting machinery :-)

I've had two of these cars. An '87 and an '88. Both were 5-speeds and both were phenomenal cars! They were fast, comfortable, handled great, looked great, etc. I miss my '88. It was black with black/grey cloth interior, fully loaded (everything but moonroof), 5-speed, and pure awesomeness. It didn't have a bunch of mods. Just a set of P245/50R16 tires and an adjustable wastegate (I normally ran it as 20+PSI boost). That was such an awesome car!!!

These are awesome little gems. Me and my father used to have one, and it was a blast to drive. It had 250k on it and you'd never know. It was covered in surface rust, and nobody every really thought anything about it until I would boost past them. I really enjoyed surprising people who thought they had a fast car until a rusty old grandma car would go blasting past them. The car was also loaded down with options that you don't even see on cars today. If you ever get the chance to drive or buy one do it because they are becoming impossible to find.

You can't top this.... I was the proud owner of the very 1st 1987 Turbo Coup T-bird. I bought it at Village Ford in Dearborn, Mi. My mother was the salesperson. This car was the Detroit Grand Prix's Pace Car. Ford made a pair, both adorned w/ commemorative pace car decals and this bird was introduces at the race. I bought the one that wasn't smoked in. I loved my baby. I'll never live down having removed all the decals. I just wanted that mean very sleek , stylish and powerful look. This review really hit home with me, due to the fact i owned a ( Blue on Blue ) '88 Turbo-coupe like this one, minus the sunroof. The car was rated @ 190 hp 240 lb-ft with the 5-spd man, trans. I have outrun several V-8 powered cars including a '86 Monte Carlo SS & A late 70's Corvette on the highway (tag read -OUTRUN ) . A very fun and comfortable ride ( Loved the computer controlled TOKICO shocks ) !!! I modified it for 5-lug axles (Using Lincoln Mark VII Parts ) & Ford SVO Rotors and lowered it using Ford Motorsports Springs. Thank You For The Trip Down Memory Lane !!

What a pristine example dude. Thanks for sharing this. Yes a flop for the time, but today this set up is mainstream. A car before its time. I love it. Eighties Style. Such an interesting time period for cars, the birth of the digital age. Electronic Fuel injection was coming into fruition and gaining popularity, computers and electronics were advancing, and car companies were not afraid to experiment with this technology and TURBOS! Unfortunately they didnt prove all too reliable at first and many feared turbo 4 or 6 cylinders. But a plethora of these types of cars were available even from American manufacturers. Turbo Regals and Grand Nationals, Dodge Turbo K cars and GLHs, Conquests, just to name a few off the top of my head. I was born in 83 and I think pristine examples of these cars will be very collectible in the near future.

"Back in the Day", I drove both a 86 TurboCoupe and an 86 Mustang SVO. I agree with David, they peaked out pretty early, but were fun to drive. The Mustang came later; that was only about 20 years ago. I sold it because either I had to put mucho bucks into it or move on. BTW, the V-8 Mustangs routinely kicked my ass. Flash forward to my middle age crisis car: 96 Cobra w/ T-56, long tubes, spray and a few more bolt ons. It is triple black and I just love it. The car culture is a blast, and so is going fast! I now look at lots of fast car channels on UA-cam, including this one that I enjoy quite a bit. Shame on me, I like the street racing ones the best. Maybe we'll see David on satellite TV in the future, the next Peter Klutt.

After I learned this I was extremely depressed, the car I planned on owning my whole life was taken away from me when I was at my lowest point. I was planning on getting a job and saving up to buy it from her as soon as I got out. I still wonder where that car is today. If it still even exists. It wasn't a flop nor the Mustang it was that the 5.0 had the sound and torque that people fell in love with. Put some flow master mufflers on and you had the iconic sound that other manufactures were wanting to replicate! The unique firing order was the key! They are now hot items to buy!

Dude, Not gonna lie, your presentation and how you describe these cars is very well done. And just as you said, "I never knew this car existed".
And even though it is a grandma car, if you would dare tune it, it would look way more badass. As it sits it's just plain clean.
That leads me to say, your a Mustang guy, the new Ecoboost is gonna be sick. 300 hp 310 tq. It will rock. Kinda funny to see that Ford had a "Great Idea" 30 years ago.
    Keep up the great work!

I've seen these with the stock iron block put down 400 RWHP with a bigger turbo, fuel system, and a tune. No one at the drag strip thinks of these as 'grandma cars'.. actually the oldest person I've even seen drive one was a man in his 50's.

I've got a twilight blue 88 as well, Been trying to finish performance mods on it for a couple of years now. You're right about there not being an aftermarket for these cars. Very few places do anything with them. But while scarce, what is out there is fantastic. Mine should be a street legal 440 horsepower. And run mid 11's at my altitude. But I also wanted to mention that the Thunderbird in the 80's was the ford of choice in nascar. The aerodynamics proved good at speeds over 200 mph on the super speedways. Nice to see one in good shape. And thanks for the vid.

Ya the parts are pretty hard to find unless you Frankenstein it from n/a 2.3's out of mustangs. I used to have an 88 turbo coupe but when the turbo blew on it I sold it for 1,500$ and I regret it now.

Awesome car. They were manufactured on the fox platform with a slightly longer wheelbase. I've always wanted to get a 5.0 Thunderbird to build up. I gotta find one with the sport gauges, though. They came standard with a ridiculous '80s digital cluster. The only other downside is that they came with the same detuned non-HO 150-hp 5.0 that went in the Crown Victoria of that era.

you are true about the technology, they were the most loaded ford car you really could buy, electronic adjustable dampners, T5 world class, it was faster to sixty than the camaro and mustang gt, top speed one forty three, my parents drove one from the mid nineties to the mid two thousands, great car. ours had leather and was mint, everbody who rode in it rich poor young and old loved it.
