That's the American justice system. When your a bank you get to screw people over and there is nothing the average person can do about it. And the government enables it by never holding bank's accountable
@@sownheard that needs to change, I bet they wouldn’t let it go on this long if it cost them $5,000,000,000 per day until these issues are rectified. The only thing these people understand is money. If they had to pay out 50% of their total worth I bet they would have acted quicker. Your actions ruined someone’s life over something that could have been fixed in 30 minutes but you didn’t? I love that police arrest someone for 5 days solely on the word of a bank, then blame the bank for not doing more to get in contact with them. I have a better idea, do your job and dont arrest someone with 0 evidence in the first place. Bet they'll do more then leave one voicemail if they've actually lost money.
@@joejacko1587 They didn't have any. If anyone with a brain responded to that call and seen a chase check trying to be cashed at a chase bank they would have told the karen who called to provide more evidence. Trespassing him from the property should have been the only thing done until the bank had time to verify the check.
I mean, when a bank tells you a check is fraudulent, what are you supposed to do? Higher and expert consultant because you expect several members of the bank staff of a conspiracy against the random citizen? There is a time for speculation and skepticism, but when all the evidence falls in your lap, and then the "suspect" comes back to the "scene of the crime" you arrest them. This is not the fault of the police.
Yeah, that's it, consistent with today's climate, just blame the police for doing their job. The police relied on Chase Bank's statement that a Chase check was fraudulent. You can't get any more proof than that to make an arrest. He has no case against the police. And, they have no obligation to answer a voicemail on a non-emergency line. Chase could have called the front desk at the police station, which open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Or, better yet, call 9-1-1 and say there's an emergency. There was no lack of supervision. lol
Dorsey The police shouldn't arrest someone just bc a bank claims they have a fraudulent check, that is beyond ridiculous to give a bank that much power
@@chrissquid Yes the police should. It is a Chase check, so the authority on whether or not the check is real is Chase Bank. That’s both the law and common sense. In the comments, it says he received a million dollars in a settlement. GOOD FOR HIM he deserves every penny and should have gotten more for punitive damage because a million is pocket change for Chase. I have a feeling that they would have gotten off a whole lot cheaper if they had offered an apology letter and some money to straighten out the damages they caused.
Only problem with Chase paying a million dollars is that they need to skim it off their other customers to pay the damages, so everybody loses except the Chase fat-cats. Best policy is to stay the hell away from Chase and if you have an account there now, pull the money out and go to a nearby credit union.
I wouldn't have accepted an apology because they made him lose his job, his car and his freedom all over some racist ideology that he couldn't have possibly gotten that legal check on their bank in a legal way. When all they had to do was call the company who gave him the check to verify it's legitimacy. I know because I use to work in a bank and did this all the time. They ruined this man's life based on his skin color. And could have possibly gotten him killed, by some overzealous cops.
@@lovelybrown6453 I think the time the apology would have worked would have been when the mistake was first known. The bank needs to train its staff on the correct ways to handle situations.

Police stations don't have a voicemail box normally. If it reached voicemail they probably didn't call the station itself but probably a detective or officer on their private line.
Two weeks ago I went into my bank to start a Roth IRA saving. The account that was made is a CD with 8% interest that matures in 2099. Two weeks later, it still hasn’t been fixed. Im never getting that money back.
Among other things, it *really* irks me that companies would fire people for being arrested, without waiting to determine whether that arrest was justified in the first place. And, similarly, for selling a car that was towed without establishing whether it was towed away for justified reasons. While Chase was awful for its handling of all this, Chase wasn't the only institution that failed this man!
Which employee should’ve lost their employment immediately? Can you specify? Someone at Chase bank, the local police department, or maybe the towing company that towed his car? Don’t be so quick to judge based on a media report. Gather some information, preferably facts, and come to an educated and informed opinion. Otherwise the next person you come across at your place of employment may demand you lose your livelihood regardless if you are to blame. You know, just because of how they feel.
Yes. They provided proof... granted their proof wasn't, but the bank would be the experts that would tell you that it is. Similar to when people are arrested for theft or rape.
Joshua d I'd demand proof of said fraud. The check had a fking number on it and the post office carries records that show where the pick up and drop offs are and he has records from the irs that show it wenr to the bank. i'd want that woman fired and anyone who gave her the go-ahead over the phone
This is from 9 years ago. And, to think that these scumbags had _just_ been bailed out by American taxpayers for the financial meltdown that they, themselves, caused. I hope, nine years later, this gentleman has sued them for damages and harm to the fullest possible extent since then.

I've never liked Chase Bank. I've always had a bad feeling about them and now this confirms it. They have no empathy for the customer they just want to take your money and when they make mistakes they should have apologized and gave the customer a settlement for the anguish and humiliation they put him through. They also should send a letter of apology and directed it to the job you lost so he could get his position back. This poor man lost everything his job the car that he loves how dare they do this to him and not even have any empathy. What a cold heartless Bank.
I'm sure they did. Of course, we never get to hear how these kinds of stories turn out, but I have no doubt that Chase ended up paying Mr. Njoku a fair amount of money to settle the matter.
Yeah, I'd give him $100 K or so. Sounds about right. Maybe even a little more, considering how egregious their conduct was, and especially since he had to hire a lawyer.
That September he was arrested for grand theft auto for stealing a Nissan from a dealership. It was a big scene too. He had barricaded himself in his house and the SWAT team had to be called in. Pretty shitty to read because he seemed like a nice guy.
Chase needs to pay this man for loss of job, car and pain &suffering AND delay in processing their mistake properly. I would say at minimum $100,000. Chase is outrageous and must be taught a lesson to not repeat such nonsense.

I use to bank at Chase. They will not call or send a letter about any account being closed by them. They won't even call or notify you about suspicious activity. They closed my savings account without telling me just because it didn't have the balance needed to keep it open and I wasn't even notified about the balance. Chase is a shit greedy bank. I was just a kid, 18 years old living completely on my own. I cashed my checks from my job for 3 weeks straight, leaving 6 dollars in my account the whole time. Well, over the past three weeks, they charged me a service fee, which put me into the negative. Then they charged me a fee for being in the negative. Then they charged me interest on the negative. The fees RACKED up in 3 fucking weeks. I thought I had 6 dollars in my account the whole time. But no, my account was almost $100 dollars in the negative. This was a lot of money to me back then. I tried calling chase to no avail. They wouldnt help at all. So it got worse, and worse, and worse. I dont even know what it got up to. I continued to cash my checks. Chase started calling me multiple times a day to get the money from me, all while increasing the balance due, day by day. One day I told them to fuck off and close the account. I will never set foot into a chase bank again, and I will tell everyone how shit you are. Well, eventually they did close the account! Its probably sitting in my credit report. Fucking assholes. I have wells fargo now, I went and deposited a check into my account, thinking it would give me a percentage of it to spend instantly on my debit card for dinner. Well wells fargo took the check and was gonna hold it over the weekend to verify. They said they couldnt do anything to speed up the check. So wells Fargo gave me $20 to get food. Im not joking. The customer service lady literally worked up some magic, and deposited $20 into my account. I have never had any issues with them, even though there was that huge scandal. Its hard to trust any bank tbh. You know that when you give them your money, that money is literally given to them? They in turn just show you a number. Its not until you make a purchase, or withdraw do they actually spend money the banks money. The bank keeps your money. If everyone were to withdrawal at the same time, they wouldnt be able to give you your money, because they dont have it, because they spent a percentage of all the money people gave the bank. So technically, when you spend money that was desposited into your bank account, you are spending out of a pool of the banks money, which is a collections of everyones. Yours is gone in that pool while they show you a phony number on your account.
But keep in mind a lot of these banks are federally insured, which is supposed to protect the banks from things like not being able to pay out to customers.

I use to bank at Chase. They will not call or send a letter about any account being closed by them. They won't even call or notify you about suspicious activity. They closed my savings account without telling me just because it didn't have the balance needed to keep it open and I wasn't even notified about the balance. I also found out someone had used my card online to perches a subscription and never knew until a couple months later when a letter came in saying I was over drawn and owed them over 200 bucks. I argued for over a hour about that shit and I had never used my card online since I got it 4-5 years before that happened which should have been a red flag. I refused to pay. After that they did a investigations and found out it wasn't me but tried making me pay for the investigation.
Bank of America is far worse.

I stopped using their credit card services. They are TRULY criminals. They had fees out the WAZOO! AND their APR was INSANELY high. I only agreed to it because it was one of my very first credit cards. And even though I had a balance I cancelled them RIGHT away after they screwed me over big time. I had a low credit limit in the beginning anyway so the balance was over 60-70% of the credit limit. And I was young and struggling with bills as I wasn't making alot of money then. So naturally I just paid minimums monthly until I could pay it all off. BUT at the end of the first year they charged me a $150 yearly surcharge just because they can. SOOO this surcharge put my account over the credit limit thus they charged me an additional "over limit charge"!! Which was ANOTHER $100. So with my regular monthly payment this all added up to nearly $300!! I didn't have all that. So I borrowed the money from a relative who wrote a check. That check didn't get to them on the payment due date. And so they charged me a $50 late fee. After I called and talked to customer service who were rude and didn't care, I IMMEDIATELY cancelled the card and paid off the balance as quick as I could.
