    *Corrections:*
52:10 I believe it is now accepted that the term "Sliverist" didn't necessarily refer to an iterator faction which specifically believed that death was the answer. This idea was simply Five Pebbles' personal beliefs. It is more likely that "Sliverist" is more of an umbrella term; for instance, it could just refer to an iterator who studies Sliver of Straw's triple affirmative. Unfortunately, it seems that the term really only became scrutinized a few months after I wrote this script.
59:50 There is a visual error where the dates/events on the timeline are offset by one year. I only noticed it after I had rendered the entire thing :(
1:13:10 Moon technically didn't plummet *straight* down; it was also to the east. You can see this by comparing the maps from Spearmaster to Survivor.
    *Notes:*
At 35:11 I sort of botched my explanation for why Seventeen Axes is placed where they are on the timeline, and since they are important for establishing the more detailed section I figured I would re-elaborate:
Assuming Seventeen Axes lived, or at least ascended while Unparalleled Innocence was under construction, they had to be alive before Five Pebbles was constructed. There is no doubt that Unparalleled Innocence is a nearby iterator, since Chasing Wind describes UI as FP's neighbor. When given Rivulet's pearl, Moon has the following dialogue:
"This is quite different from what I remember of my own structure. It looks as if it is using the newer lymphatic conduit water distribution system. Only the much later models had these. The only one near here would be Five Pebbles."
...thereby confirming that Five Pebbles was the only recent iterator constructed in the immediate area. And since Seventeen Axes' memories are stored in memory crypts, they almost certainly would have lived on top of Moon.
I should also note that the whole "Ancient vs. Benefactor" thing remains a huge pain in my side as someone who wants to simplify/summarize the lore, since it can become so nuanced. While everyone with a PHD in rainworld lore generally agrees that they are two distinct civilizations, just how distinct is highly debatable and the most popular theories seem to constantly shift. While I personally find it highly likely that "ancients" simply refers to distant ancestors to the benefactors (that they are the same species), many will argue otherwise; that they are a completely different, past civilization who had nothing to do with the iterators.

This isn't really super relevant but if anyone is curious here is a more "precise" reason why Moon collapsed rather than just "lack of water".
One of the broadcasts, basically a status report of Moon's equipment, states this:
"No water flow detected in CONDUITS: 03, 04, 07, 09, 13, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23. PRESSURE AT CRITICAL LEVELS IN CONDUIT_04. Rapid cooling will be immediately scheduled for affected nodes. However, quantities of slag run-off may reach dangerous levels. Critical system-wide activities should be temporarily suspended to prevent retroactive damage from resulting seismic shocks".
We know very little about the inner workings of iterators, so it is not 100% known what "rapid cooling" or "critical system-wide activities" refers to, but it can be assumed. Rapid cooling probably refers to the use of water to flush out slag from iterator's cans, while the critical system-wide activities are likely simply just processes that require precision and should be postponed until the earthquakes apparently caused by this emergency rapid cooling cease.
Now, an analogy. Imagine that the conduits are like giant soft drink bottles and the slag being removed from them is the drink inside. In this example water somehow stops the drink rising out the top of the bottle like it's got mentos in it when the lid is opened. Conduit 4 is like a soft drink bottle that you've shaken up a bunch and is ready to blow. The request to "temporarily suspend critical system-wide activities" is basically telling Moon to move out of the way so she doesn't get sprayed in the face. I'm sure you can guess what might happen if the process that uses water to stop the soft drink from exploding attempts to activate without any water. And I'm sure you can predict the consequence if Moon doesn't have access to any live broadcasts trying to tell her that someone is about to remove the lid and her head is sitting directly over the cap.
Yeah. Moon's can basically activated an earthquake directly on top of her and she had no way of knowing it was going to happen because her communications were offline. Without enough water to flush out 10 of her conduits at once, one of which was close to destroying itself, her systems suddenly all completely failed and the subsequent massive amounts of seismic activity slowly decimated one or more of her legs, leading to her collapse onto Shoreline. Given that she is only partially collapsed in Artificer, this process may have taken several cycles of repeated attempts from her can to rid itself of slag. It is possible that her failure to suspended critical system-wide activities resulted in the severing of her umbilical and left her unconscious and unable to prevent her total collapse.

This is a really cool theory, I always thought it was something else entirely
Remember how in one of the pearls moon states that the reason structures don’t get destroyed in the rain is because they have microbes that replenish them. Well when moon stopped getting water and more importantly had a bunch of chemical imbalances and build up of just generally undesirable stuff, her Rarefaction cell started to fail like how you see at the end of the cycles, or in pebbles at certain points in the timeline. And even if it only happened for a relatively short amount of time, over the course of a couple cycles the absolutely crushing weight of her partially unsupported can destroyed her legs, and without any way to “heal” the damages sustained like how pebbles could, eventually it just started to crumble and collapse. That is not only the reason why she fell much slower, because it was a very gradual process, but it also explains why her chamber is mostly intact, because it seems like either the puppet chamber can keep it’s gravity on significantly longer than any other area in the can when major damages occur

This is genuinely _the_ best, most accurate RW lore video ever made! It manages to avoid so many of the pitfalls that other lore videos usually succumb to, like calling the Benefactors "The Ancients" when that name actually belongs to the civilization who built the Depths, or thinking that the Great Problem was about the Echoes when really it was about helping the lesser creatures ascend. I only wish it had taken the time to mention some of the more mysterious elements of the lore, like what happens after ascension or what the hell is going on in the Saint campaign's ending, but I understand if this video wanted to keep speculation to a minimum and just focus on what we know for certain.

41:00 The more I think about "Public Ascension" the more I'm disturbed by it. It reminds me of the forced mass suicide (genocide) scene in Destiny 2, when the Precursor race "exuviated" to become The Witness. Many were not willing participants and, like the Rainworld's Echos, were trapped in suffering for billions of years. I can imagine those last desperate hours, as everyone, willing or not, was forced to "ascend".

PPS> Here's the dialogue from an Echo who was a dissenter of Public Ascension, showing that whatever happened wasn't universally approved:
Do you see the same as me?
Beauty continuing to bloom even in a place long forgotten.
I did not have the will to depart, nor the desire.
Why did they always search for an escape, as if we were imprisoned?
What offering from the void could usurp the gift of life already given?
This moment, right here! It is where we are meant to be.

    • @slugfishh
      @slugfishh 4 дні тому +1

i doubt there was forced ascension, and i imagined the reluctant ascensions to be more caused by stuff like peer pressure, and well, the reality of being alone after everything and everyone else you know is already gone. nothing else within the text really gives us the impression that they were the kind of society to force ascension upon its citizens. the shaded pearl from base game, as well as the exterior pearl atop the wall are the main pieces of evidence for this, we know that as a society they encouraged and supported debates, not only between themselves but even with five pebbles. they had tournaments, festivals, art and culture, and honestly i imagine them pretty alike to our own society. even regarding the cycle, they were never able to come together on a single definition to it, and could only all agree that it existed in the first place.
i also personally dont really see echoes as some sort of "divinely punished" beings, some of them sound pretty chill about their situations, and interestingly enough id say that the undergrowth echo from saint is another example of this, if anything they sound quite content with their reality as an echo

This is actually quite incredible. I'm already learning a bunch of stuff in the first couple of minutes, even as someone who is pretty knowledgeable about Rain World, and its lore. (Though a lot of the info is speculative, but they're speculations grounded in facts, I'd say. Like, there's a lot that supports them, and they're highly likely to be correct. I can tell that a lot of research went into this, and I have a ton of respect for that)
Once again, thanks a lot for giving out so many great voice acting roles to so many of us! It's been a lil while since I took part in a VA project myself, and I haven't really done many Echoes or Iterators before, so it was a blast!

If the 4 digit dates mean the number of 1000 cicles, then one of the earliest dates (1510 for exp) would be 1510*1000(cicles)*4(days in a cicle)/356(to compare to real earth time), which translates to roughly 17 000 years (earth years) which is a long time for cicles to have existed until up to that point, and it wouldn't make sense for the benefactors to measure time that way before cicles existed, unless the iterator were programmed to operate their steam release once (or at least syncronised) per cicle. Although, if iterators take around 100 earth years to be built (based on 5P building time), assuming that many were buing built at the same time, it's not impossible to speculate that thousands were made.

following up, it's weird that spearmasters campaign is 1681 and hunter's is 1684, which is around 34 years (earth), but the damage observed in the meantime couldn't have been made in such a short time, or at least the damage looks like it would take way longer considering the differense between waterfront and shoreline. they probably did that to make the iterators dependant on them. helps prevent things like distant frontier from happening.

Another game that tackles the same philosophy is called ice pick lodge the void
    The chain is infinite
Every reality has different rules and life but what they all in common is life must always exist even in the void

First of all, marvelous job on the video, amazing production and narration.
I still feel like I don't understand how exactly does the rain work in RW.
So far I have 3 theories on it:
    1) It's only lethal in the 5P & LttM region because of having two iterators next to each over. But then, after LttM collapses the rain would have returned back to it's normal state?
    2) The rain is lethal around any iterator structure, but only in (relatively) close proximity of one. This seems to be the version implied in the Downpour DLC. However, if this is the case, then why build the Retaining wall?
    3) The lethal rain is a global phenomena. Again, then what would be the purpose of the Retaining wall?
Perhaps the nature of the rain shifted due to the degradation of the iterator structures? This might explain some discrepancies in those theories, but I still have no idea which one is the correct one.

    • @slugfishh
      @slugfishh 4 дні тому +1

      1. that's not really how the solution worked, the big problem was not to just ascend the fauna of the world, but basically unravel the fabric of the universe to end the cycle once and for all. even within saint, we get the understanding from the echoes that this is not an end, but a new beginning. saint is about as effective as carrying around a vat of void fluid lol
      2. challenges arent canon, SOS boss battle was a fun touhou reference
      3. downpour devs have confirmed that saint never met SOS, and was born much after they were already gone and dead

Thank you OH MY GOD... ONLY 605 LIKES??? A disgrace upon the souls of these ignorant eyes who have not seen this!
I must ask, is there a image of the full timeline with timepoints and such? (minus saint campaign starting being visualized- we'd need to construct a iterator to be able to process that amount...)
Might not be clear enough, so if needed, I will elaborate! (or I might've missed it somewhere...)
I just realized I sat watching this entire video for a hour and a half.... good stuff.
