Wolf Van Halen discusses Frankenstein! | Shred With Shifty

  • The well-known heir of rock royalty breaks down his own takes on his father’s fiery techniques-and gives an up-close look at rock’s most infamous guitar.
Being born into rock royalty doesn’t make you a rock star-you’ve gotta earn it with your own chops. And whether it’s the classical pedigree of his first name or the hard-rock infamy of his surname, Wolfgang Van Halen has a long lineage to live up to. As he displays on this episode of Shred With Shifty, he’s more than up to the task.
Wolf joins Shifty to teach the blistering, tap-heavy solo for his song “Take a Bow,” from 2023’s Mammoth II. It follows in his dad’s footsteps, sure, but it also shows Wolf has a voice and vision of his own-both of which are just as potent and theatrical as his father’s.
Wolf treats us to a tour of his new signature semi-hollowbody EVH model, the SA126, with details from EVH managing director Matt Bruck. But he doesn’t hold out on the family jewels: Wolf shares the story of his father’s iconic Frankenstein Strat and brings it on the show, with some extra dirt on his dad’s journey from Marshalls to his signature Peavey 5150 amps. When Shifty asks who’s stewarding his father’s invaluable gear, Wolf eases our concerns: “If the world ended, they would still be okay,” he grins.

I hear ya! That guitar being thrown by Ed across the room on to the couch still makes me gasp just thinking about it. Lol.
Loved the solo on Take a Bow where he used Frankie for the solo…still has that magic, and he’s got the ability to channel his father better than anyone I’ve heard! So talented. Now…he needs to stay out of the BS drama that goes on! Rock on!
      P.S. I’m good. I don’t need to see those chills! 😂😂😂😂

That got me too. I was kinda half paying attention cause I already knew the story behind him using Ed's gear for his solos on the last album.
But... When he said let me show you I instantly put my guitar down and picked up my phone. Love that guitar and Eddie's my ultimate guitar hero.

@@Kinger1625 DLR has morphed into a sad, 3rd rate Vegas lounge lizard/singer and isn't worth a second of Wolf's time. I hope he can stay above the drama because it does nothing but stain the legacy his father left.
I can't say that I'm all that interested in what Wolf does musically because all things Van Halen ended for me when EVH passed but he seems like a good kid with a level head on his shoulders so I wish him nothing but success.

I am touched by the obvious love EVH had for Wolfgang. While I don't know the intricate details of their relationship but every photo and video I have seen shows EVH as a doting Dad - particularly when Wolfgang was very young. As a guy who had a very loving Dad who passed decades ago knowing my Dad always 'had my back' is a constant source of pride and comfort - it never goes away.

Wolfgang has really evolved to become his own musician, but you can't help but love how much he respects and adores his Dad's legacy. He is doing his own thing, but the fact that he played on his Dad's original rig, to bring a little of his Dad with him on the song really hit me in the feels.

    • @e.l.norton

Oh, the '5150' is beat to Hell. I saw him play it in 2004 with a Strat neck and a new bucker in it. But, the most recent pictures of it are not pretty. It's got more holes in it than Sonny Corleone. I also heard that the wood around the Floyd may have become unstable. Not sure if that's true. But, I heard it quite a while back. The original Kramer neck had the headstock broken off and repaired. The neck was also cleaned! All those years of playing taken right out of it. The maple was back to its natural color. Still a legendary guitar, though.

If you google "nobozo 5150" you'll probably be able to find the pics (they have a watermark with his name on them). They are incredible showing how beat up it was and the cracks in the wood etc. Seeing the wood grain up close in high resolution is incredible.

Magnificent part of history there .......I believe Ed chose it as a 'second' from Charvel in 1974..for only $50 ..He did his experiments with it combining a Gibson PAF Humbucker with a Fender vibrato bar bridge & eventually he sprayed it white with black stripes just as an unplanned random experiment even cutting his own black plastic scratchplate. Just the ONE pickup . Which he only stumbled onto because he took the wiring out of a Fender Strat & didn't know how to put it back .....Before Floyd Rose created his double end clamp system Ed & guitar tech Rudy had all different ways of trying to keep it in tune...Like using no string trees, Putting 3 in 1 oil on the nut , widening the nut grooves, pulling back upwardly to make it go back in tune. Then he discovered Floyd & rallied him to improve the system .....He first put it on the yellow & black Bumblebee (which was a guitar Ed never rated as good as this first one) He saw a Japanese company was copying the paint job of the Bumblebee so to stay original Ed put more tape on the guitar & sprayed it RED .....Only left a tiny bit of scratchplate on there with visible holes where the single coil p ups had been which were originally covered by the scratchplate. That version of the Frankenstein wouldn't get copied until 2006 by Chip making 'the Replica' ....Ed improved the Floyd device now on his Red B&W Frankenstein by suggesting the fine tuners at the bridge so you didn't have to unclamp the nut to re-tune it....That contribution was VERY important. I think in about 1982-1983 Ed started combining this classic Frankenstein body with KRAMER necks ......The quarter under the bridge was a wonderful makeshift/improvised ED idea wasn't it ? I believe the last time Ed used the guitar (except for occasional live Work & by Wolfgang on 'Take a Bow' ) was on the 1983 Jump video. Then he replaced it on both tours and recordings with the Kramer 5150 Red B&W guitar....(although Donny Ward told me that it was not actually a KRAMER body) Yes, its a fascinating guitar with a wonderful history & it was very thoughtful of Wolf to bring it out to show us....Actually on the Mammoth 2 album I believe Wolfgang also used the White SG which his dad had 'modified' with a hacksaw in Sunset Sound studios when doing the slide parts in 'Dirty Movies' when cutting the Fair Warning album in 1981......& also if you listen very carefully on one side of the stereo of Wolf's track 'Mr. Ed' on his First album on the second verse you can hear the electro harmonix synthesizer which Dad used on 'Sunday Afternoon in the Park' ...It was unearthly to hear that again I can tell you. Wolfgang with his new SA-126 axe is sonically exploring the area of semi acoustic instruments in ways his Father was prevented from exploring by band politics driven by 'image'......They are Lovely instruments & Wolf did a great demo recently of this guitar......He also did a Drum Demo of his percussive ideas in his songs with Garret his live band drummer & it was great to hear them both play & speak about this stuff.....I should imagine Wolf will be doing a bass gear demo,,,, & a vocal microphone demo too. In fact he's playing so many different instruments I wouldn't be at all surprised if he's going to be doing a BAVERIAN CHEESE WHISTLE demo soon. His Dad would do funny musical gags about that particular instrument......lol

I'm a drummer so I don't know why, but this solo from Take a Bow reminds me of George Lynch's playing with Lynch Mob.

I always see comments for people who want the kid to play his dads music without him. Those people are idiots, and i feel bad for the kid trying to be himself, and hes stuck with all these people calling his toothless dead dad “god”

What I wanna know is when is the last time Eddie played Frankie? What show?

    • @bosley5614

I would also like to know exactly what show was the last. As far as videos; the last time he played the Frankenstein is in the jump video (about January '84). Starting with Panama (about June '84) he played the Kramer 5150 (or Kramer HFT). As far as what I know about concerts; he played the Frankenstein at the US Festival (May 1983) but every clip of the 1984 tour that I've seen he has the Kramer 5150. So I think it's about that time he switched. If you find out the exact last show, I would love to know too.
