Ben E. King, when discussing covers of the song, said “……and, of course, the one that held up in my head the most was John Lennon’s version. He took it and made it as if it should have been his song as opposed to mine.”
There is nobody better at straight forward rock n roll than John Lennon. There is a long version of "Just Because" where at the end he says hello to Paul, George and Ringo.
Because of a lawsuit filed by Morris Levy, John had to record some songs that Levy owned the publishing rights to. Levy was a controversial figure in the music industry with ties to the Genovese family. The character Hesh in the Sopranos was based on Levy.
Nice Trivia...the band footage was for the BBC show "Old Grey Whistle Test" and when they talked about John's fee they said according to the regulations they had to pay him 15 gbp. And John said ok pay me in "chocolate olivers" a biscuit he couldn't get in the US...which they did
After this release in 1975, it was when he decided to take a break from music to be a "house husband." It wasn't until 1980 when he decided to start recording again. Five years. It was wonderful to hear "Starting Over" on the radio as I drove down the Long Island Expressway. The world seemed better
Thank you for reacting to this. I think the whole album is great. Hopefully you will do some more from this. Bring it on home /send me some loving. Is definitely worth a listen.
I remember watching those two videos as they were transmitted on the Old Grey Whistle Test... It had been a while since he had done anything on TV so this was SPECIAL.... And I have just loved "Slippin' and Slidin'". Still do and still love listening to it. Keep on Rocking young sir.!
Really enjoyed that! The Beatles started out doing covers of music they liked, so no doubt John was having a good time. When they first met, John and Paul discovered they both liked "Close Your Eyes" by 1930s British heartthrob Al Bowlly and it is a great song!
His voice in Stand By Me is just wonderful Slipping and Sliding reminds me why I struggle to like some of John's singing where his voice is subjected to effects that place it somewhere distant in the mix. some of his other solo work suffers from this as well. I know he developed a "thing" about his voice.
John singing 'Stand by Me' - the version I have on my playlist, he stops momentarily and says "Hello Julian" (as the younger Julian Lennon wandered into the studio during the recording) is my absolute favourite version. Coincidently, as both of my own sons are also called _Julian_ - my first set of twins were: Philip _Julian_ Leigh, (boy) and his sister: Marianne Zara Cyrena (girl) (R.I.P.x2) ...and my second, (surviving) twins are Tegan Katra Zarabeth (girl) and her brother: _Julian_ Sebastian Keiron (boy). :) (Neither named after Julian Lennon, by the way!)
@brigidsingleton1596: "John... says 'Hello Julian' (as the younger Julian Lennon wandered into the studio during the recording.)" Actually, in the video, John is saying "Hello" from the U.S.A. (John's performances here were filmed at The Hit Factory in New York City on 18 March 1975) to Julian in the U.K., as he knew this video, along with "Slippin' and Slidin", would be seen by his son when both songs' videos were to be featured on the British music TV show "Old Grey Whistle Test".
The timing was off, but who cares right? It's John Lennon. I love John. And I love his son Sean Lennon who by the way shares birthdays with his father. Sean hooked up with Les Claypool to form the Claypool Lennon Delirium. It's good music and John would have loved it.Thanks
The UA-cam video for this had a pretty serious sync lag, but how fun. I love both of those covers. Especially the Little Richard one, that is just so much fun. And the irony is, when they were young, Paul McCartney idolized Little Richard, whereas John idolized Carl Perkins, lol. 😂
Carl Perkins was more George's guy. John was a big Chuck Berry fan. He once said, " if you wanted to give Rock and Roll another name you could just call it Chuck Berry."
I got this album when it came out and loved it. As you know the Beatles were teens in the 1950s when they first fell in love with R&R - which they periodically spoke of and wrote many songs inspired by and as homage to that era. A fun convergence: just ~3 years later in the late 1970s, radio DJs in NYC and London would shuffle 1950s rock classics like these, and reggae! into the mix with new Punk tracks. Original Punks were open about their love for 1950s stripped-down R&R (rebelling against late 60s-early 70s mannerist, swollen, over-produced stadium rock) and recognized their resistance and rebellion affinities with reggae ❤️🩹 It’s also the reason for reggae-rock fusions by bands like English Beat and the Police ✊🏽
Stand by Me was the best performance of this Spector produced ROCK AND ROLL album. The rest of the album had John's voice way too treble sounding. This album was made for only one reason-- to settle a copyright suit filed by Chuck Berry's estate for copy right infringement on Come Together. Originally the song sounded way too much like Berry, until Paul talked John into doing it more slow and "swampy". But it still started with Berry's line "Here come ol' Flat top" from Berry's song "You Can't Catch Me", So John agreed to record three of Berry's songs for the estate.
Your read of the song credits was entertaining. Anyone over the age of dunno 40?50? would just have said the Ben E. King hit written by Leiber and Stoller and the b-side of Long Tall Sally.
His covers are better than the originals IMO. Shame it was out of synch. Excellent regardless. I remember seeing it when first broadcast on the Old Grey Whistle Test here in the UK in 1975. I was 14 or 15.
Richard Penneman was Little Richard!! Hendrix played in Richard’s band n said he wanted to do with the guitar what Richard did with his voice!! React to the film clip of Lennon n Yoko singing Please Don’t Go with FRANK ZAPPA!
I have a question. When the sound is not in sync on the video for us watching, is it in sync when you are watching it. Every time this happens, I wonder if you see it in sync. Thanks.
Good reaction Lee!!! I can't watch this with you...I get too emotional///sorry....there are certain artist that I just can't watch...John is one of them. too much pain.
Ironically, John's Stand By Me kept Ben E. King's comeback song out of the top twenty. But I'm thinking it probably helped Ben's song more than hurt it.
His version of Stand BNy Me is equal easily to the original. Julian did a great cover of John;s version 10 years later. Slippin and Sliden Richard Penniman was Little Richard
The bands was reproduced by the great Phil Spector. John didn't like the results !! It's my favourite solo album of John !! And Phil Spector is the best producer that ever lived.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Sorry L33 but this album is a mess. Over produced and with no spontaneity. Lennon had lost it by the mid-70s and this album proved it. If you want a great album look up the original tracks and play those. John did have good taste 😉
I'm so torn on this album. John's voice is easily my favorite Rock voice of all time and I love a LOT of these classics. Yet, his mid 70s obsession with his favorite 1950s saxophone player ruins it for me. He has some really cool mid 70s original songs as well that he forces sax into. To me, it just takes all the acid out of the rock and fills it with camp. The best example of this (my opinion) is a track called "What You Got" from his 1974 album "Walls and Bridges". It's built around the best guitar lick John had written since "Day Tripper". The guitars, bass and drums have absolute banger dripping off them right away. He nailed the lyrics too, but when the chorus comes... It's all horns. Not 70s funk horns accenting/ punctuating the rhythm section, but rather walls of cheese. Oh the humanity! 😂
Too bad you posted a video (of Lennon) that was off-sync. There are people who specialise it syncing audio to video...how'd this video get past them? They ought to be fired!
No matter what any one else says about John Lennon , he was without doubt one of the great singers. This was a great record
I love his version of Stand By Me!
Ben E. King, when discussing covers of the song, said “……and, of course, the one that held up in my head the most was John Lennon’s version. He took it and made it as if it should have been his song as opposed to mine.”
I “appreciate” Paul and his chameleon voice, but “I LOVE” John’s rocking voice.
There is nobody better at straight forward rock n roll than John Lennon. There is a long version of "Just Because" where at the end he says hello to Paul, George and Ringo.

I love John ❤ these were two great covers.
What a great lineup, and what a pleasure to hear John's live voice again.❤
He just sings the hell out of Stand By Me.
Love it. Always a pleasure to see John.
long live john
John's cover of " Stand by Me" is so good.
What treasures these are. Love his covers of these songs, and the gravel in his voice, always my favorite Beatle. Blessings all.
Nice Trivia...the band footage was for the BBC show "Old Grey Whistle Test" and when they talked about John's fee they said according to the regulations they had to pay him 15 gbp.
And John said ok pay me in "chocolate olivers" a biscuit he couldn't get in the US...which they did
This was a lovely album. Lennon recorded songs from his youth in the 1950s that he loved
I love seeing live Lennon. Plus these 2 performances were so good, plus sll those fabulous musicians there was👍🏼
John covering rock classics ... that video was really fun ... thank you
John's son, Julian does a cover of his father's cover. It;s great!!!
The chilling thrilling voice of John❤
❤🎉❤love these! John's voice🥰!!
Never knew for long time John sang backup for Bowie on Fame! Learn something each and every listen Lee!! Thank you🙏💕🎶💕
"Slippin' and Slidin'" is Little Richard's (Richard Penniman).
After this release in 1975, it was when he decided to take a break from music to be a "house husband." It wasn't until 1980 when he decided to start recording again. Five years. It was wonderful to hear "Starting Over" on the radio as I drove down the Long Island Expressway. The world seemed better

love it bought this album when i was 18yo a while ago

Never heard these before. I really liked them.
Just thinking that when John smiled❤️
Really enjoyed that! The Beatles started out doing covers of music they liked, so no doubt John was having a good time. When they first met, John and Paul discovered they both liked "Close Your Eyes" by 1930s British heartthrob Al Bowlly and it is a great song!
The whole album is pretty fun but the medley of "Bring It On Home to Me/Send Me Some Lovin'" is another one where his voice is magnificent.
His voice in Stand By Me is just wonderful Slipping and Sliding reminds me why I struggle to like some of John's singing where his voice is subjected to effects that place it somewhere distant in the mix. some of his other solo work suffers from this as well. The whole Rock & Roll album is awesome. A great driving down the road album.
I can see it would be a great roadtrip album -especially out west, expansive landscapes ☺️
Thank you for this

If you like his covers, check out his anthology and his version of Be My Baby
Love both songs. :)

And too much sax slathered over everything.
The suit wasn't filed by Chuck Berry's estate. It was filed by Morris Levy. He owned the publishing.
You probably know Richard Penniman better as Little Richard.
I love that brief bar on the guitar of Unchained Melody too.
Um, it's an octave or two higher and I don't think that was acknowledged or intentional.
Yikes! John did it! 🔥
Your read of the song credits was entertaining. Anyone over the age of dunno 40?50? would just have said the Ben E. King hit written by Leiber and Stoller and the b-side of Long Tall Sally.
You can really hear George's influence in this song.
Stop with little George please!!! The less talented of the four beatles. Little Paul's brother that's all.
I think Little Richard was the first to release slipping and sliding. It’s also on a Buddy Holly album I have.
Slipping and Sliding, that is.
His covers are better than the originals IMO. Shame it was out of synch. Excellent regardless. I remember seeing it when first broadcast on the Old Grey Whistle Test here in the UK in 1975. I was 14 or 15.

@debjorgo Supernatural Thing was a top five hit. John’s cover of Stand by Me reached #20.
I have a song no one has covered GUARANTEED BANGER!!! Joe Walsh and the James Gang STOP Joe and his band 10 minute jam- do the album version
His version of Stand BNy Me is equal easily to the original. Julian did a great cover of John;s version 10 years later. Slippin and Sliden Richard Penniman was Little Richard
The history of this album is the thing of legend. You might need to check out McCartney. Russian album. Again rock n roll covers of the early career
4 Johns maybe.?
The bands was reproduced by the great Phil Spector. John didn't like the results !! It's my favourite solo album of John !! And Phil Spector is the best producer that ever lived.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
And a convicted murderer.
Sorry L33 but this album is a mess. Over produced and with no spontaneity. Lennon had lost it by the mid-70s and this album proved it.

Is it me or were these videos edited by Chinese Kung Fu film editors? Everything's a second off.
😂
