Things Not To Say To Black Women

- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- Whether it's people touching your hair, assuming you like to twerk, or treating you like an "exotic animal" on dating apps, black women regularly face a variety of racist and dehumanising presumptions. Here, eight women relate their experiences of the stereotypes they've faced - but also the strong sense of sisterhood they feel as a result.

Wow! Now that is terrible. Have you actually heard people say that to you? That's a barbaric thing to say to anybody. In all honesty, beautiful women exist in all races. Ugly people also exist in all races. Beautiful is not a race or a certain set of traits. Shame on those people who would ever have the nerve to say that to you.
That’s annoying no matter what! “You’re beautiful for a black/curvy/thick/short/long woman” sounds like someone who is black (or short or anything else) usually isn’t.
I’m a black woman from the US. When I was a receptionist at a law office, the clients would come in to sign paper work, or whatever. You should’ve seen the looks I’d get, and their comments were ridiculous!!

In addition, people deemed "exotic" have had a history of being hypersexualized and fetishised (hence entire porn categories for Black or Asian people, geered towards the white male gaze). The “aggressive black women” needs to go. There are a lot of black women who are afraid to say how they feel because of that stupid stereotype. 🤦🏽♀️
I hate it my ex use to say it in every argument we had I hate it
Because society knows that if women, especially black women ever rise up and act on all their rights-- to vote, to assemble, to learn, to be happy that NOTHING could stop them! Its suppression of a population that the dominant class fears.... Be aggressive, be classy, be powerful, and rule the world-- Hell Be Michelle Obama! That's why she dealt with so much hate-- but she was classy and powerful when she let that shit bounce right off of her and kept doing good things! Someday people will realize that the amount of melanin in their skin and the genitals between their legs doesn't determine the amount of respect a person should be alotted.

I've noticed the "why you so aggressive?" one on twitter and other places online where debates are happening. Any black women just states their opinion and it's automatically "attacking people with your views." No it isn't, a black woman made their point, there's nothing aggressive about it. It's terrible to just scroll and watch the double standards unfold.
Deep dude. Respect
I've come across similar stuff. I think you can run into that both for being a female who speaks her mind and for being dark-skinned and speaking your mind. If you're both ? Hope you have a good deep breathing routine, you're going to need it.
But when white women do it, it's considered feisty or inspiring or motivational

Bella Newell don’t hate your color. Your race shouldn’t matter it’s your personality. Learn to love yourself for who you are. Unfortunately I am struggling to love myself in all ways possible so I can understand. But we both must have to at least try to accept ourselves because no one else will first.
Black woman: *expresses herself in any way.*
Everyone: "WHY ARE YOU SO AGGRESSIVE AND BITTER?"
Mexicans we are loud and when I speak and I am very passionate we put strong emotions. My boyfriend korean he is quiet and he ask me why are you mad and screaming and I told him I am not screaming is my speech tone it is ruled by my passion of the subject. That is who we are we cant talk without passion because we are not boring people for us communicating and socializing is our oxygen.
Not everyone, I personally like the fact that a lot of black women have big personalities and are expressive. I feel like white women are all expected to be dull and quiet, it does my head in. I am expressive and loud pretty much always, regardless of my mood haha.
Because of all the idiot strangers who think that touching my hair is okay?
if it's any consolation: I had that happen to me too, and I'm about as northern European as it gets. Even worse, it can come from other women. Yikes. Stupid ******s
Friends have told me that the strong black woman trope is especially damaging because it makes them feel as if they aren't allowed to show a complex rage of emotions that all humans experience. It's really sad.
madamebutterfli00
It completely is. And more than that it makes everyone see us as masculine. Even Kevin Hart said that dark skinned black women can take a punch better than “soft” light skinned women. We aren’t considered feminine, aren’t considered worth protecting, and certainly not considered beautiful.
"Makes them feel as if they aren't allowed...". So they are allowed, but just feel like they can't? Nobody controls our emotions but ourselves. Time to take responsibilty. Time to give less fucks about what other people think. Most of the time people assume someone else thinks something they aren't thinking, also. Lots of mind-reading I noticed. Big waste of time.
@@RunninUpThatHillh oh no ... You've quite missed it
@@RunninUpThatHillh When we give no fucks that creates the stigma of us being "aggressive and angry". Now that leads to the next set of problems for us to deal with. It's like we are skating on egg shells no matter what we do.

@@ginihall1234 Black women all over the world share many many experiences, and there's solidarity in that, but each group within the diaspora has its own variation of the culture. No one was trying to imply anything negative about US BW. It's just weird that British people's only point of reference for how to interact with UK BW is from observing Black folk in America. They don't even notice or realise that we aren't identical, even though we live in the same place. Tell me, wouldn't you find it weird if some random person said: "Where your ends at, fam?" or "Catch dat peng ting?", and expected you to know what that meant because Black Brits use those phrases, and your DNA should magically give you the answer or make you identify with it. No they don't. I had a black supervisor who would come up behind me, bounce my curly bun and say, girl what you got in you. I'd tell her, I don't know I'm a mutt.
I've never had a child, but I'm appalled at how many people think it's okay to touch a stranger's baby bump! We need to none of us be touching others anywhere on their person without express permission. I mean, why do people do this? Are we all just starved for human touch? Maybe if we went back to shaking hands with everyone we meet, we'd stop taking unfair advantage of people with less social power.
I am latina and I have long but very curly hair and people always ask me to touch and some ppl would even touch it without me knowing or my permission and its annoying . like I need personal space I dont like it when people touch my hair all the time.😢
Omg I’m not even black and having people touch my hair is so annoying. My dad does it sometimes, but not maliciously, but it still provokes me.
Is this bc of my autism? Maybe…
ughhhhhh this must be so annoying to deal with regularly and then even when being honest in certain situations being called "aggressive", can't bloody win!
This is all 1 big cry, people of all races and genders face issues it's not just black women. These black women should try living like a Asian Muslim for a week and see how it is for them.
If I see one more comment degrading African Americans about how “we all are rude and aggressive” when WE ARE ALL NOT THE SAME. Many times I’ve been told I act white which is annoying as well.
I agree. I used to be called an oreo
Why is it annoying? You sure have no confidence if that annoys you
XxToptankxX what does my confidence have ANYTHING to do with me being annoyed because I’m constantly being called something I am not? Just because I like a certain type of music or style I’m considered “white” to those people
iloveloveloveableful thank you!
I think you missed the point. Ignore it, and if EVERYONE says you act like a white girl. You most likely do
Society is ignorant in so many levels.
Say no to stereotypes!
“This is dehumanizing.” Yes, it is 😂
Im a light brown skinned woman and I remember back in college one of my tutors said to me after meeting mother (who is the same complexion as me) I wasn’t expecting you mum to look like that I asked why she said I thought she’d be white I was okaaay 🤨but then she said to me so it’s your dad who’s white then I said no my dad is black she didn’t stop there with the disrespect she then went on to say to me “oh so your black black then” 😟
similar situations like this were unfortunately a norm to me growing up even at work my ‘blackness’ was questioned people would assume I’m mixed/race biracial but after i correct them and give an explanation my family tree (my parents and grandparents are black just my mum and grandma light skinned) there’s a shock and Ive even had people treat me differently after that realisation-not all black people are one shade we come in a wide variety of shades a skin tones ✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿
GIRL ME TOO. My mom light skinned, my dad dark skinned, and my grandmothers are white passing but black, and I’ve been asked what I’m mixed with and I just say black with more black💁🏾♀️👸🏾
same here sis I have even had people tell me I was lying about having two. lack parents n not being biracial.
Thotimus Prime I like that one and will definitely be using that next time someone ask if I’m mixed or what I’m mixed with 💁🏽♀️
More people need to take anatomy classes in this world and learn about genetics and melanin... seriously.
Exactly! Both my parents are brown but my skin tone is the same as my great grandma and i got into an argument and gonna say that i wasn't even 100% black let me tell you i ain't never whip out no family photos so fast and if we knew about genetics back then i would've gave him a review lesson.💀
The aggressive statement gets me every time. Like someone will say something hurtful and then when I cry my voice gets pitchy like I don't even want to say louder, but my voice cracks. And they'll be like "Why are you so aggressive?" It's like you can't even reply after that without seeming like you are being aggressive.
Don't listen to them when they ask u that ,ask them why are they bully
Not all American black women speak "urban' either.
Whew! Many a time, have I had white women “ask” to touch my hair and as I remove their hand or straight up say no they get really insulted as if they’re some how entitled to touch my hair
TomTom “white privilege” at its purest! Those people feel entitled to have/be/receive what ever the small racist white minds think of🤦🏾♀️
same
I knooooowww🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
As a white woman, those women you mentioned are not part of our group.
Jason Heilinger humans hv hair. Maybe u don’t but don’t be jealous of ppl who do and get a wig lol
It’s not that I didn’t believe it but until the hair touch thing happened to me I used to wonder who are these random people just reaching for people’s heads and then it happened to me. I felt violated. I really did 😐
I always got "is that (even) your real hair?" from lil small town beckys. They'd always have this bitter "who do you think you are" look on their face.
Black women are too often judged as a lesser collective and not as equal individuals. It needs to stop.
lol@ _> Lil small town becky. I died LMAO! it reads, small minde becky
I was in 9th grade when I had a white girl run her hands through my hair to touch my scalp because she didn't believe my hair was real... Oh the rage! She had been asking me for weeks if I had tracks and I would tell her no. So this trick caught me off guard. She came behind me when I wasnt looking and ran her hands through my hair. Then she shouts: "you weren't lying?!" The violation I felt still triggers me to this day and I was in 9th grade 16 years ago. We really go through some traumatic experiences that we are taught/forced to down play.
@@cedricadaniels7983 this is a hard read, it is a violation, l can never imagine going up to stranger and and fondle, prod, paw someone like that. YOu need to remember her name . I am telling you this because my son remembered a specific white boy and called him out online. because his name was out there he was forced into action. my son carefully recorded denials, insults and fake apologies then much later an actual apology.
@@PHlophe I remember her name, she's actually coming up as a friend suggestion for me on Facebook, smh
I never talked to her again after that incident. I'm glad your son got the apology that he deserved and I hope that he is healing from this. I am now aware that this is still grieving me and I have to get it out of my heart so that I can heal too. This whole thing has me reflecting on times that I've been followed around the store to be asked about my hair. Or the comments my supervisor has said in regards to being surprised that my hair could be manipulated to do different things. He has gotten used to my afro, so when I came to work with a sleek ponytail he boldy asked: How did you do that? I didn't think you had hair?!
People don't think at all before the speak to us, but they expect us to be politically correct every time we say something to them!
The truth is..... they envy ooo
"You're the whitest black person I know." "That's racist!" "No, it's a compliment!" Actual conversation that my sister had with her white co-worker. It's wrong on so many levels smh
The way some people treat black people is mental I just treat people all the same with respect and dignity.
Elly KindredZombie I agree with you but black people do treat white people differently a lot of the time though.
IᒪᒪEGᗩᒪ ᗩᒪIEᑎ Do I mistreat black people? No! I treat everyone the same regardless or what colour their skin is. I was in a relationship with a black woman and when she took me to her house to meet her family they were so cruel to me. I got sworn at, was physically pushed out of the house and told that I could not be in a relationship with my girlfriend because I’m not black. If I had taken them to meet my family and they did the same to her (not that they ever would) my family would be called racist but people assume that black people can do what they want and not be racist.
@Jason Heilinger Actually black women are way more attractive then white women are, because black women have beautiful African features, natural beauty and curves. Plus black women come in many different shades and skin tones. I'll take a black woman over a white woman in a heartbeat! This black man loves black women!👌🏽
Jason Heilinger "black women are much less attractive than white" wow u really are something 🤦🏾♀️
@Jason Heilinger that's your opinion, doesn't mean that's the truth, there a lot of mixed/interracial couples out there. And white people get wrinkles or get old faster, that's why i don't know if i (black girl) should date my suitor (a white boy), but I actually adore him. 🤷🏽♀️
Soon as I saw "touches hair" come up I had to pause for a moment and wait for all the internal screaming to stop XD
STOP VIOLATING PEOPLES PERSONAL SPACE WITHOUT PERMISSION!!!!!!
They're always shocked when I swing on them or swat them away. Well except for this cute little boy at grocery story. 😍
Everything you just said is exactly my life in China. The hair is like a magnet, in the middle of a work meeting "wow, you changed your hair. Is it yours?" "How do you attach it?"......
Can we settle for a "You look good, how are you?"
so it's not just white people? good to hear.
You’re Cute for a Darkskin girl 🤔... I hate that one
These women aren't aggressive, they're funny. I love their one-liners. "Okay, Oprah" 😂😂
The amount of times that I've gotten made fun of for my appearance. My nose, my hair etc the hair touching..... such a relate-able video
Charli Kuran people are a$$holes, dogs are all you need.
Same but I know you're really pretty
Lacey Kean That truly disgusts me and it also disgusts me that honestly it doesn't surprise me. People are callous and just be proud that you still have the confidence to wear your God given hair.
Happy Horse truuuu 😂
And then they spend thousands trying to emulate your look, because they're insecure about themselves. Don't mind them, you just keep being you.
I went to a job interview and people genuinely didn't think I was who I am. "Wow you look nothing like what you sounded like on the phone, you're very well spoken "... thanks ?
"Thanks, so are you..* *sweet smile* I've answered back with that a few times. If they get offended, then you know for sure they were being offensive.
Y'know? Why, take offense if I mirror back to you what you did/said, if it was coming from a positive place? It works everytime. Lol And if they're honest folk (we all say stupid stuff at some juncture) it'll open up a dialogue about it.
@@WhizkeyGamer That's just somebody trying to kick off. *shrugs* As you can see, I didn't entertain it. Pay it no mind x
Dark skinned girls with vividly coloured hair are seriously the most beautiful
Black women are more than just their appearance🗣
You could say that about all women tho
Many of us American black women don’t do this stuff either is the culture that’s pushed down our throats we have the same thing happen at parties about twerking and get told your Yass all the time
@A M shut up and stop telling people their experience in life you have only lived your life and can never tell a black woman her experiences that's disgusting.
I thought everyone was saying it? I've seen/heard white people saying it with not a black person in sight.
Latte Arrival exactly! I hate that image on tv that is portrayed of American black women. A lot of these things that the women are saying in the video, I have seen, heard or experienced.
"I twerk to work. I even twerk on the bus home." 😂😂😂 I'm from the US but the struggle is the same for us EVERYWHERE. I always get asked to touch my hair, but I prefer that over people automatically touching it. 😐😐
As a white guy I'm sorry that black women have to endure this in our society but I will say that black women are very sexy and some white guys take it too far because we don't even know when we are being racist when we're trying to complement you. If you're a black woman you probably already understand this. I'm glad there's videos like this on UA-cam that will better help me understand my errors and help me in dating.
This gave me a horrible flash back of school days when I had my big puffy afro hair. All the white girls would seep their claws deep into my hair in an ambush and it even touched my scalp at times. My heart was heavy with anger as I had to go to the toilets and fix the hair that took me 30 minutes to do in the morning but was destroyed in a mere couple seconds of unlicensed hair petting
Lol.....what era was this???
I have had that exact same problem. Its annoying as hell
Lala Addas lol his happened to me all the time when i had an afro literally three years ago :/
@@veganvampire95 that's so interesting...I don't know one white person who would ever do such a thing.....
@@lalaaddas6363 because they "din't do nuffin" lol literally whenever a black person/people talk about their experiences with rude whites it's almost going to be negated by some random person. You might've never experienced it but plenty of others have, especially me.
3:20 I literally LIVE for Black women with big hoop earrings and I love short natural cuts on us. I especially love the fact that more of us are embracing our natural hair. It's truly beautiful to be a Black woman. I wouldn't ask God to change me at all.
Omg i can relate to the “touching your hair” part. They so addicted to my dreadlocks 😂
I love the fact that it’s all dark skin women on this platform
When the 'You dont sound black' hits close!!!
It sucks because, not only do I not sound "black", my name is Becky. . . . So when I am on the phone and I have my proper voice on, then they see me, it's like I just screwed up their whole image of me.
Its actually really funny but super annoying.
Yep, been there. I've got a Gaelic name, so people assume I'm white. Lol But I know some white ladies with traditionally black names too, so I guess that could cut both ways, if we're honest.
@@Depplova81 Girl yes, my surname is Gaelic and I have a Russian middle name. When I tell people I'm 100% black, they're shocked like I'm a unicorn or something, they assume my dad is white literally always. Could be standing right in front of them and they still think I have European blood in me
@@camillewaugh3458 Well....you might......all the way down the line somewhere. It tends to be more often than not with black people with European surnames. I'm from Scotland, so it's more obvious, although both my folks are black too x
@@Depplova81 Maybe you're right since I Am from the Caribbean. I dont think there are many pure black people in the world anyways. Dont think any race is all pure in my opinion. I thought you were biracial tbh. Soon everyone will look alike I guess lol
@@camillewaugh3458 Nah, I'm just light coloured. And that's true, it's very far and between where people are pure anything, no matter how much they may boast. Most of us are mixtures of heritages, rather we know em or not. Take Johnny Depp for example, he has African American ancestry. One particular woman named Elizabeth Keys I think it was. She was a slave.
So most of us don't know who and what's in our ancestry. Unless it's for purpose of family, it doesn't matter anyhow. We're all human at the end of the day x
No one: You do not sound black to me.
Black women: Does black have an accent? :/
How does black sound like anyway? XD
I'm a male, but get this at least once a month. 😩
@@cappyjones That's annoying how people judge what we are or should be by our apperances. ;_;
Fara Uanhom
It’s less about the dialect and more about the tone of the voice in my opinion. Black people seem to have more depth to their voice. Or more bass. Idk how to describe it
I don’t know anything about sociolinguistics or science around what makes your voice sound the way it does, but you would know immediately upon hearing some or most of these women that they are black.
The girl in the white shirt is indistinguishable imo.
All these beautiful and complex women! Great video.
just make sure they are over 18
Yeah sure
The thing I personally hate the MOST
when people touch my HAIR
@5:07
"Oh you're too defensive and aggressive"
Well take a seat cuz its about to get worse.
Black or white or yellow, we are all equal. If we want to fight racism we have to change the mindset of people and it stars with children.
True.🙌
It irritates me when someone says “she’s pretty for a black girl” erghh
All so pretty
Black women are
🤣
Have u ever had, “oooohhh, your skin is so soft!”⁉️. Also if someone out-of-the-blue touches your hair without asking - make sure to do the same to them. Get in there and ruffle up their hair too.
LOL!!
We talk more about this at www.simplyputpins.com
I have done this but oddly some enjoy it
Can we start a petition to get the adjective 'sassy' CANCELLED?! 😑
