Simon Murphy - Govanhill Street Level #2

- Simon Murphy is a Glasgow based portrait and editorial photographer whose ‘Govanhill Street Level’ project was a highlight of last year’s Govanhill International Festival. We are delighted that a new instalment will be coming to the street for this year’s festival with an exhibition trail of new images taken recently and over the past year.
The portraits have arisen through a close connection the photographer has to the place and the people he strikes up a conversation with - the photographic portrait in this sense is a collaboration and it is based on communication. The project as a whole underlines the vibrancy as well as the diversity of the area, and is a body of work which is becoming an ongoing chronicle of change in the area.

The window trail was developed as part of Street Level’s Culture Collective programme, funded by Scottish Government through Creative Scotland.
Just wonderful .... I came to walk round Simon's exhibition three times, to soak up the feeling, observe some of the technical choices and to be inspired anew each time
It's a crying shame I can only like this once. Can't wait for May having missed out on the first edition issue.
Love your work and having been to Glasgow many a time I believe it is such a great community for street and documentary photography. Just subbed
Keep doing what your doing 👍⭐⭐⭐

Fantastic - great to see Simon encapsulate the people and the area - and those that will run it down without ever visiting - Govanhill is the world in a wee small square mile - get out and see it and live it and don't judge from afar
I've loved seeing your work in shop windows... Govanhill is a beautiful place, it's where I was born, have raised 4 of my own children and continue to live here today...I have beautiful friend's in Govanhill... Thank you for this great video...we would love to have some of your work in our cafe...❣️
Amen. If you want to know a place, know the people.

FANTASTIC production, passionate and inspiring. Cant wait to ee more of this project and the associated videos.
Simon, came across you when looking back for Govanhill. I left at 21 back in 1976, your images brought back many memories. That shot from the Queens Park Gates down Victoria Rd brought back many childhood memories of running wild in the park. My days living around Aitkenhead Rd, Batson St, Calder St, studying in the library, going to the swimming baths, magical, they all flooded back to me. Nice work, I will be look out some of your work with a special interest in the Govanhill pieces. Good luck with your work.
Very interesting project. Everywhere has got something of interest and yes, it is almost always the people that make a place. Thank you for showing another face to Govanhill.
This is my kind of photography. I've walked Govanhill often, my daughter's first home of her own was in Calder street (she still own's the flat) opposite the library. I recently went back after not visiting for a number of years and it was great to see the revival on Victoria Road.
Simon is such a lovely guy, amazing photographer 😍
