The way of playing that he uses stems from having a weak left hand, where the mechanical advantage of the way he plays is used, although it leads to a poorer standard of playing. He needs to strengthen his hand and get out of the habit as soon as possible, that will make him a better bassist. He occasionally rests the length of this thumb along the middle of the back of the neck but that is not the same, he needs to use the end of his thumb. I know, I used to teach bass guitar (properly, I'm a bassist, not a guitarist that also dabbles with a bit of bass like many so-called bass guitar teachers are - the kids they teach never really learn anything of much use).
Generally correct, but you are not taking something into account. Nicky Wire is like 6 foot 5 or something. So he probably has gigantic long fingers. maybe long enough to have enough reach to keep his thumb on the top of the neck and STILL be able to use the tips of his fingers on the strings. I know because i am the same way - I have really long fingers and play bass, and I do not need to have my thumb in the middle of the neck back. I can have the pad of my thumb on the top edge of the neck and still use my fingertips on the strings. I don't have a weak left hand at all, just blessed with long fingers. Given that Nicky is taller than me, his fingers are probably even longer than mine. Just a thought.
