It's almost the end of 2022 and I know for a fact even in 2023 I will be listening to this song and band. The most underrated band in history I must say
I spent years looking for this song, a crazy search because i knew neither the title of the son nor the name of the group but i was sure it was essential for me to find it. One of the best songs I've ever hard. Finally I had to ask in a chat: does anybody know a song who says something like this: "in the beginning, when we were winning..." "and the singers are in flames"? at last finally somebody told me: "look for manic street preachers", and here I am, finally listening to this beauty at least once a week.
@@rhezapramaditya2161 on the contrary, mi present age is 51. What happens to me is that I don't know much about music in the 90s. I listen mostly to music in the 80s and back, except a real good son, like this one.
These are some of THE best chord changes i've ever heard in any song, any era. The way that the major/ minor chords keep on cascading over each other sounds like one big chorus throughout the whole song. It's too bad that thought is the enemy of popular music.....because the Manics are one hell of a thoughtful band.
When the train collision took place in Greece, this song came to my mind. Now, watching the video once again, I remembered why... no excuses, no genuine smiles anymore. Thank you MSP for this gem, a remedy for the soul... to the everlasting.
If songs like this couldn't plant the seed and mechanise change nothing will.. Tremendous band, philosophy, poetry and weaved together with incredible sound. Excellent.
Love this band since I discovered as a child and know I'm a grown man amazing how the time and the years passing through so fast like water my father and my grandfather used to say and both of them were more than right.... the only thing that stays the same it's definitely good music and the memories that follows it....!!!!!
This song is so much emotional that it can't be explained how really emotional it is, because you can't find the words to tell This track deserved more luck and attention, and the band too. The final part with that crescendo is something I never found in any other song (maybe just in Music by John Miles): that final part is something like the most beautiful dream you don't want to wake up from. I guess the Manics knew they were creating something out of the average, even if Nicky said, during an interview to NME, that "The Everlasting was just a giant mistake, in our career". He said that in 2001, just three years after the track was released. I've been listening to this song for 18 years and I never got bored. And I keep on listening. It's something I can't do without.
If you say something 'true' u would do better to be ready to back it and believe in it, because people will pester u euphemistically _'to the ends of the earth'_ if need be and it's a matter of what u value the most.
Such a hauntingly beautiful song, heard it on the radio a few days ago and now i play it on repeat, the music is amazing and the lyrics and James has one of the most beautiful voices i've ever heard
Man, I love the heights hit in the first few words of this beautiful song so much! The emotion contained brings a tear to these jaded, world weary eyes. What an incredible voice and such a phenomenally talented band. Legends.
Maybe because I relate myself so much towards this song already since it was released 20 years ago, I have always had the feeling that this song is about our disconnection from each other. Relationships now-a-days have become so full of difficulties and as soon as there are problems, we let go in our endless sigh of easiness in everything, leaving those who really know what love is standing alone and on fire of everlasting desire to belong … together ...
I remember also buying the album , but then stupidly lent it to a friend and never saw it again 🙄 brings back so many memories, I had just finished my last year at school and was preparing to go to uni- good times !
How could they be underrated? They were huge from 1994 up until 2000. They deliberately sabotaged themselves after this and are still pretty big arena band considering they're all well into their 40s/50s
I remember when this song was released to the world.. God, I was blown away. I love this badly. This is how I got to know the Manic Street Preachers. Odd name for a band, but what a music and lyrics...one of the best bands ever.. this song express all the beautiful side of humanity ❤️, if we will get passed over the bulshit and the evil of men kind.
The gap that grows between our lives The gap our parents never had Stop those thoughts control your mind Replace the things that you despise Oh you're old I hear you say It doesn't mean that I don't care I don't believe in it anymore Pathetic acts for a worthless cause In the beginning when we were winning When our smiles were genuine In the beginning when we were winning When our smiles were genuine But now unforgiven the everlasting Everlasting The world is full of refugees They're just like you and just like me But as people we have a choice To end the void with all its force So don't forget or don't pretend It's all the same now in the end It was set in a different life Destroys my days and haunts my nights? In the beginning when we were winning When our smiles were genuine In the beginning when we were winning When our smiles were genuine But now unforgiving the everlasting Everlasting In the beginning when we were winning When our smiles were genuine In the beginning when we were winning When our smiles were genuine Now unforgiving, the everlasting Everlasting But now unforgiving, the everlasting Everlasting
timeless, i say this with every song like this, it shoots straight through the auditory system and into the soul, that feeling of feeling the song with a higher power
Αn, undeserved, moderate success in 1998. A masterpiece, in my opinion. I prefer the 6 minutes version, though. The instrumental part there is pure magic.
Well I remember seeing them filming this video at Euston Station, had just bought the album on cassette.. Tried to sneak into the cafe where they were filming.. I remember saying something like James asked us to come in... Needless to say I was refused entry... Don't hold it against them.. Awesome band, quality music makes your heart ache.
This music just makes me remember a really really happy phase in my life. I'm brazilian, used to live in London for 2 years (between 2006-2008), had this english boyfriend that, among all the other good things, introduced me to this band. This is so good for so many reasons. 🤩
I still have all of their CDs (!!), saw them in Cardiff, London and Hamburg and cannot understand why I temporarely lost my focus to their music. I switched and became addicted to bands such as Interpol and Editors, but forgetting about this is inexcusable. Timeless lyrics, fantastic musical support, no wonder that nowadays no one cares... People are ruled by the Biebers and Oras and seem quite happy. I am happy to get old with dignity and not to belong to this Jumpers...
Finally found the song been searching for 15+ years, no lock with Shazam, sound hound etc, just downloaded Google on my hauwei and it had the option to find a song, so I whistled the tune that had me prisoner for almost 2 decades, and bam it came up, I can finally rest😁 awsome band and awsome song
There isn't a band around that makes me' think' the way these guys do... their intellect is beautiful and as I guessed people wouldn't understand them properly but I did and still do ... a very compassionate bunch of blokes they see the world the way it needs to be seen - glad my three kids trust me enough to like this for what it is ... poignant
The melody of the verse is one of the most beautiful compositions in the history of pop and rock music.
Or the chorus.
It isn't, but you obviously couldn't restrain from sharing your hyperbolic enthusiasm.

I totally agree awesome

Same here, but I didn't knew anything, except "we were winning". Once heard on the radio while driving a car.
Well, you both are really very bad at searching.
I bet your age is below 30. This song was very popular back in 90s when i was in high school.

It's a lush song ..💞🎸
I hear you, the musicality is quite simply maddening ,have no idea how James turns Nicky’s lyrics into music.
Poetry and we last forever
I absolutely adore Manic Street Preachers. It's got me through very dark times, their songs have such depth and beauty that I will never tire of them.
Agreed
Same here
You said it!! 🎶
I will try to collect the most iconic and timeless songs. So this song will surely one of those.

Mazi sou bro!
JDB should go down in history as one of the greatest vocalists ever. This song proves that.
Completely agree. How he does bother more respect as an amazing vocalist I have no idea

What a beautiful song. Timeless classic
Long live manic street preachers.

Their music makes me feel stuff no other music does
The first few bars of this is one of the greatest album openers ever.
Makes as much sense in 2017 as it did in 1998. Underrated masterpiece
woke garbage in 2022
The best British ( Welsh) band ever.
They never go in the trash like some music of today.. timeless, unforgotton, everlasting !
One of the best groups out of Wales (Blackwood) Timeless classic!! Still think Richies alive somewhere? 😥
