I was a little surprised by the results and what everyone guessed. If you want a 3D version, let me know!
this was very interesting! 3D version yes pleeease!
YAS! 3D version!
It would be really smart. But also maybe try getting devs of the same caliber, the game 5 dev definitely skewed votes based on preconceived biases for the engines by having the worst game
I'm letting you know that I want a 3D version.
A 3D follow up would be a lot of fun!
Hey, Game 5 Dev here. I really enjoyed watching the video. Couple things I want to say:
-For the character movement I used custom made physics so there wasn't any rigidbody or collider affecting player's movement. That probably made it a little harder guess :D.
Also, I tried movement to be as fast pace as possible with variable jump to escape ghosts easly and thats one of the reasons I kept running while swinging on.
-I used Cinemachine for the camera. Idk why many people would think 3rd game had Cinemachine despite cinemachine being extremly reliable for camera movement. Its really hard to screw it up honestly.
Yeah, those were the stuff I wanted to say. My take on this is that, it's harder to develop a feature on engines like godot and unity and it's easier to put a lot of feature at a short time in other engines. But I would say unity and godot are easly scalable for larger projects. Thats where the biggest difference happens in my opinion honestly. Games at this scale are pretty much rolling a dice for me aswell :D
Well you did a great job, keep up the great work!
Nice job! Hope your Fiverr gig is successful!
I would like to see a similar test, but 5 different engine developers are all shown a sample game, and they have to exactly recreate it in their engine. See who and what engine gets closest to recreating it. I think that might better show the pros, cons, and limitations of the different engines.
This was a fun experiment. I waited all week for the results. I only got one right :D
Yeah depending on the rules, it could totally change or highlight a different purpose for the video. Interested to see what he chooses.
absolutely do a 3D version of this challenge
Yes yes
Gdevelop, Gamemaker, Construct would have to step down from the competition then since they don't have true 3d capabilities.
In the end it would just be Godot vs Unity vs Unreal like any other videos 🤔
gdevelop has some 3d capability tho (but obviously not as good as others)@@idchad_official
Add Unreal and 100% will get that one right. 😂
@@mikatomik5532 Just put billions of polygons on the screen. if it runs at stable framerate, it's Unreal.
3D frames are more telling of their renderer. Post-processing effects will be the biggest telltale. I'd like to see that 3D all-other-things-being-equal comparison video.
lil bro has chosen the most simple game genre that can be made even on a calculator and it's somehow indicative that "hur dur you can tell which engyyn it iz". When all of the engines are using below baseline shit that uses 5% of their potential? Yeah, I guess so, lol.
The 2D test makes sense only, if you are gonna use the potential of each engine, which most 2D indie games do not. Let alone platformer games, which is oversaturated shovelware genre.

“Lil bro” is an amazing indicator of how salty a zoomer is lol
3D wohluld be awesome! The most telling aspects will probably be post-processing and lighting. Can't wait to see it.
It just goes to show you if you custom make everything and I mean everything with a proper modern game engine these days it's almost impossible to tell the difference which is why I didn't even bother posting lol. There are tell tale signs as others have pointed out don't get me wrong, but game engines are getting closer and closer between each other which is really only a good thing because it means they're being standardised. The fact that we can pick and choose based on our workflow and the back end rather than having to worry about the end result an engine puts out is great.
I would love to see a 3D version. Let's expose people's biases about 3D in Godot!
Would be difficult since a bunch of stuff is still broken in 4.0
This was a very interesting experiment! I was amazed by how similar the games looked and played, even though they were made with different engines. I think this proves that you can make a great game with any engine, as long as you have a good idea and know how to use the tools. Thanks for sharing this video, StayAtHomeDev! 👍
A 3D version of this test would be really interesting!
0:22 Game1 > GameMaker
0:44 Game2 > Construct3
1:13 Game3 > GDevelop
1:28 Game4 > *_GoDot_*
1:40 Game5 > Unity
Man, a 3D version would be the best! The differences between these 2D games are most likely caused by the different developers with unique visions and experiences, not the engines themselves, this added to the fact that they all use the same assets makes it basically impossible to know in which engine they were made.
But with 3D games, every engine has its own look, behavior and quirks that are not so easy to hide (c'mon, you just KNOW when a game is made in Unreal), so even if a game was made by the same guy with the same assets, it will look and behave different in each engine.
+1 for a 3d test. Maybe add different engines to replace the 2d focused ones.
I'm curious to see if whomever gets to make a demo in UE5 will remember to reduce the motion blur
This was encouraging, because I’m currently making a game like that in GDevelop. There has been this fear in the back of my head that it will end up looking like a 2000s browser game.
Yes please, a 3D version is just what I need after Unity's pricing announcement
3d test would be really cool to see, go for it
I'd love to see a 3D experiment!
I'd definitely love to see the 3D version! 😁
Hell yeah a 3d version
only missed one when I was guessing but it also happened to be an engine I've never used. I can't be the only one that can just tell there's a "feel" and "look" to 2D games when they're made on a certain engine.
Dangit. I was so sure 3 was Gamemaker and that the fiverr developer followed a platformer tutorial. lol
I got the 2 engines I've used right at least XD But the only thing I recognized were a couple default settings in those, given a longer time frame most developers would change out default particles and such, and then it really would be impossible. Great that game engines are so flexible now :)
Neat, saw this on Lemmy. Subbed now and looking fwd to the 3d version.
Great experiment!
3D is a no brainer. Especially since I've only dabbled a little in 3D on Godot, vs quite some time in UE4 and 5. Wonder how they compare!
I got it hilariously wrong lmao. Looking forward to the 3D version where I will definitely, absolutely, get it based purely on default settings xD
I AM HAPPY to see a youtuber contribute to game developer freelancers!
Thank you sir!
Yes! Repeat it as 3D but with 30 NPCs or complex phisics (for perfomance test)
I didn't think I would get that close lol. Tbh I thought that number 3 was unity because I thought it may have been using cinemachine, and I thought about switching it with 5 :(
I think if I knew Gdevelop I could've guessed right, I got 3 and 4 mixed, I thought the pixelation effect of number 3 was godot because I have experience with it, great test
I got 3 of 5 correctly. Not because I recognized some assets or functionality. But because I know the people using the engines. The GDevelop dev was a visual guy building a nice room. While the Gamemaker guy was a pixel artist and the Unity guy threw in a lot of fancy stuff.
I normally don’t like being coerced into commenting but I really want to see the 3D version of this experiment 😂. This was a great idea!
I wanna see a 3d version of this experiment.
As someone who has experimented with most of these engines, it was a bit easier to tell with some of them. However, I still wasn't right most of the time. It's interesting how many people attribute certain elements to one engine or another. It's also amazing how a developer who is good with one engine in particular can make a distinct feeling game, that can't easily be tied to it.
It's almost impossible to figure out which one is which not only because it's hard by itself, but because the developers are all different, so the game end up being all different as well, in a way that I need to recognize not only the difference of the engine, but also filter out the differences in creative freedom from the devs.
Oh you absolutely do the 3D version, and have Unreal Engine in the mix, mandatory!
3D version would be awesome!
I agree that 3D would be a lot more easier to tell compared to 2D. With 2D, any game will look similar no matter what but in 3D its a lot more trickier to make your game not look like the engine it came from. Unity has that default lighting look it has and Unreal Engine is a high amount of contrast and bloom when rendering stuff. Godot 3 has that weird blue tint but has that ability to get confused with a Unity game if done right. That will be neat challenge to see.
3D would be cool to see
What to do with the prize money? Invest in the 3D Version. :D
Didn't know about the challenge but I also would not have gotten it right. Mostly because I haven't worked with 2 of these engines and know one of them only a little. I did get Unity and Construct right, though. Really with 2D that still feels like mostly a roll of the dice. Construct was the only one I was mostly sure about because their basic controllers have a kind of distinctive look to them.
I would love to see a 3d version
I stumbled upon your channel due to this video, and I'd like to share my thoughts, which might be a bit lengthy, so please bear with me.
Out of the five games showcased, I managed to correctly identify three of them. However, the two engines I failed to match were ones I've never used before (Construct and GDevelop). I'm not suggesting that they're fundamentally different, but there are indeed distinctions. While ideally, the engine used shouldn't be readily apparent to the final player, it became noticeable in this experiment due to the constrained three-week development period.
My theory or rather, idea, is that certain engines are better suited for particular purposes. For a 2D game like the ones you requested, I believe Godot stands out as the best option, despite my limited experience with it (as I primarily use Unity). Does this imply that you can't achieve a perfect game using other engines? Absolutely not. It's entirely possible to create any game in any engine, but the choice of engine can significantly impact the pace of your progress. Therefore, it's crucial to choose wisely, especially for solo or indie developers.
Please, make the same challenge with 3D games, I would really like to see that❤
please include also the Defold engine.
do a 3D version of this challenge
3d would be awesome. What engines though? Unity, Unreal and Godot are pretty much givens. I guess Cry Engine and... idk, Panda3d?
Imagine some demake PS1 style 3D game, it will be real challenge. And for the developers too - to mask their default engine settings
Please a 3d version of this :)
Please remake this experiment in 3d, I want to know if I can see the difference between Godot and other game engines.
If nobody wins the 3D version either will you go with 1D, 4D or 2.5D next?
2.5D or just compare one engine vs another? IDK, might need to give a few softballs haha
VR!
Oh no i was close 😅 but this format is very cool , i hope to see a 3d version !
3d експерименти це чудово)
Definetly do a 3D version please. Unreal/Unity/GODOT/Cryengine/Defold
I had a pretty strong feeling game 5 was Unity, and after a look through the comments I was suspecting Godot for #4, but I don't know enough about the other 3 options to make any guesses.
What about a third person horror game or a 3D platformer too.
3d version please, your videos rock, btw
As one of the individuals who nearly answered correctly, my guesses were as follows:
Game 1: Construct
Game 2: Gamemaker
Game 3: Gdevelop
Game 4: Godot
Game 5: Unity
Got 3 engines right.
I only confused the first game engine with the second.
From the engines showcased in the video, I have personally only used Unity and Godot.
I had not heard of the other 3 engines before, but after conducting a brief five-minute search on UA-cam, I was able to identify at least one of those 3 :).
I am not an experienced programmer at all; rather, I am an artist, and i couldn't agree more on the part, that it is not the tool/ game engine/ drawing software that matters, but the user him self.
3D would be awesome!
Yes, please not always (with few exeptions) boring 2D games, let's see how the 3D contest would be. (And maybe a XR/VR contest too? 😄)
Ufff a 3D version could be great
Yes , please also in 3D.
I would like to have a 3d version. Although I am using Godot to make a 3D game, I always doubt is it a good choice? It is hard to find someone to teach about custom shaders in Godot. Even though I can achieve what I want in Blender Eevee, I am unable to recreate it in Godot. However, it seems there is a lot of resources in unity tutorials about that. Tutorials may have a significant impact when choosing a game engine.
yeah , I guessed everything wrong 🙌 first had a dither shader, fourth a crt shader, so I thought first one Unity and other one GameMaker, looks like construct can do shaders too.
What a cool experiment ohohoh
i was absolutely sure that second was made with godot no way
I think it would have come out the same even if those same gave devs all used the same engine. Each developer thinks of games in their own unique way. Certain features, common in different genres, will get added or ignored based on skill and interest of the developer or the given timeframe.
At least I got the GDevelop one right ✨
u sound like saul goodman
I missed original video and had to play by my own. The most polished games IMO was 1 and 4 and that was why I thought they were made in Unity and Godot respectively and I was only half correct.
I got 4 and 5 right :D , and yes it would be intresting to make the same with 3D
Gdevelop must be in the 3D list
Let's do a 3D experiment!
As mentioned before, engine is about the workflow, not the result, per se. What would be much more interesting is to see how these people actually made these games. The analysis of the differences in the workflow. But I guess that it's too much work to do so.
make a 3D challenge also double the price "money"
Hah! I only got one right. Unity was too poor off a job to guess. Let’s make the 3d test and I can participate as a develop of one of the games, for free. Although I’m 100% sure it’s gonna be all over the place too 😂
as I can guess result of 3D experiment will be the same, but still it will be interesting!
i cant believe i got all of them wrong ;-; but hey atleast it shows that game engines are more capable than we thought, like gdevelop and godot which godot was the best looking for me
3D would be better but Godot can look just like Unreal with just some settings.
As usual its not the tool
its the user,
i was laughing my ass off when people though the game that felt slow and clunky was Godot xD
have some faith Godot is amazing and full of potential
3d version please
Go 3D experiment! unreal too?
3d versioon plz
gamemaker is so powerful to make these 2d games... but IMO the cons is the dev experience, making ui and gui is painful to the soul
What about Fusion 2.5?
You must do 3D
Please redo the test in 3D.
In my comment on the other video I almost got all right, except for the ones made in Game Maker and Gdevelop, which were the opposite of what I said.
❤ CONSTRUCT 3
3D
3D nao!
3D pls
I only guessed the number 5
3D!!!
Yes we want 3d
3d please, pretty please 😊
I'm indifferent to whether you do a 3d version. I'm sure it would be fine. Whatever.
3D 🔥🔥
🔥3D 🔥
🔥🔥3D
Let's 3d. Then I will surely guess correctly.
Do 3d
in my opinion I win
