It’s great watching you guys guess, at the end of the day I have to agree that the importance of a game engine is just to the comfort of its developer. All tools are great so long as fun games are being made!

    Can I be the devil's advocate??? 😈The debate about engines is really about which engine offers the most value to the developers and not about what the players will say. Things like ease of use, price of the engine, supported export platforms, tools on the asset store - are some of the criteria to consider. I don't think that many developers are concerned about what the players will think because of course players often can't tell and don't care.

    • @GonziHere
      @GonziHere Рік тому +2

      Yeah, in the end, it all uses the same gamepad, the same gpu... (outside of missing features), the main difference between engines is the workflow and the amount of work it will do for you on a particular project.

    • @KHJohan
      @KHJohan Рік тому +14

      Yeah the discussion should be more about how the engines are structured in regards to workflow.
      I opened up unreal, Unity and Godot.
      Unreal takes way too long to open considering game dev is my hobby, not my job. That 30 min is a large portion of the time I have to make games. If I was working in a studio, I could set Unreal to open, have a morning meeting and then get to work.
      Unity also takes some time but I didn’t find the user interface intuitive and I can only program in Python (granted learning C# could be useful). Unity has a lot of options and tools, but as a noob, I don’t know what those do.
      Godot is still complicated but once I tried it out, it was much more intuitive for me.
      I’d like to make 3D games, so the other game engines mentioned aren’t going to be for me sadly.
      Godot is also so fast at opening that I don’t have that mental barrier of “ugh I have to wait” also my adhd could distract me during loading hours.
      Godot being Free Opensource also just means that there isn’t a bunch of bureaucracy.
      Game Engine hell is real though, so I would recommend people write down if they wanna do 2D or 3d or both. Then they need to just try out a couple and write down notes

      @@KHJohan I think that the choice of engine should be based primarily on how seriously you are going to engage in game development. If you're going to be a pro, maybe even get into a game company to create all sorts of games in the future, your choice is Unity or Unreal Engine. I see no point in wasting my time studying something else. If games for you are primarily a hobby and you know that everything will not go beyond some simple project, choose anything. It might even be easier to learn. By the way, remember one point that a more complex engine is not necessarily worse. After all, it has already solved those thousands of small moments that remained unresolved in small engines. And you will most likely have to solve them yourself. Which will cost you time.

      @@KHJohan It took me 12 seconds just now to open up UE 5.3.1 with a 3080, a 10700k, and a bunch of tabs and steam open, and the parts aren't exactly run to the ground but they aren't pristine either. It was saved on an NME SSD so without that YMMV but I don't see why anyone trying to use a game engine with a computer you'd use to run a 3D game environment (what most would find the most value in using UE for) and actually be able to run it at 60 FPS minimum wouldn't also be able to open up a modern game engine in less than 15 seconds. Fwiw that's still pretty long by my standards of opening up a program but your coding life won't change over 15 seconds.

    The only difference with game engines is which one makes sense to you. I'm pretty sure I've tried every game engine I can get my hands on by now, and the only one I've liked is Unity. It's just the one that makes sense in my head, the other ones feel dumb and confusing (yes, including all non code engines. Written programming is NOT hard in comparison to the ins and outs of your engine).

    • @eridadues

      @idoblenderstuffs Рік тому +1

      @@eridadues I do actually like the programming in Godot. It's a very good option, just the general interface and structure of stuff is a bit overwhelming for me in Godot. Unreal is confusing and dumb, yes. They have an individual little window but every possible thing you could use, some of them taking an entire screen. The naming conventions are irritating and make no sense. And the visual scripting needs a complete redo because half the nodes do something absolutely different from what they look like, or do the exact same thing as another node, except one of them doesn't work. It's also impossible to make games that don't have AAA style graphics because you can't easily turn all the fancy stuff off, so whatever you make looks extremely uncanny when shoved into a AAA engine. You wanna make a PS1 horror game? Better find somewhere else because unreal can ONLY make AAA style games.

    its hard to tell when it comes to 2d, but its easy to tell when it comes to 3d. because unreal has unique shader and shadow, and i can tell that's unreal engine when the first time i saw it

    I won't get them all, since I have only had experience with Unity and Godot (which I guess proves the point of the video lmao). I'm going to guess game 2 is Godot based simply on the buttons, and game 3 is Unity because of the camera setup (which I'm guessing is cinemachine). Otherwise uhhhhhh.... I'll just pick by random. Game 4: Construct 3. Game 5: Gamemaker. Game 1: GDevelop.

    Okay, so if we're going from the players' perspective, yeah, for the majority of users, it truly does not matter.
    HOWEVER, this becomes less true when the user needs to run the game in a specific way.
    If I need to add some parameters, or run via Wine, or mod the game, or even find specific data on the drive, then what engine is used matters A LOT.
    Also, from the development side of things, I completely disagree that it does not matter. Some engines are simply better for certain things than others, as they have strengths and weakness that should be considered. If you are developing "for fun", then sure, whatever floats your boat. But in a serious production, picking the wrong engine for the kind of project you're working on can be a serious hindrance and, sometimes, utterly cripple the end result.
    What I'm trying to say is: Can you make a 2D pixel platformer in Unreal? Most certainly. Should you? Very debatable.

  • @Rikaisan
    @Rikaisan Рік тому +1

    Hot take? nah
    I also don't think they matter, you can make any game with almost any engine, engine doesn't make them better or worse, what matters is if you chose the right tool for the job.
    For example, picking Unreal for a 2D game is suicide, you can pull it off, yes, but the engine wasn't designed for 2D and therefore your development experience won't be good.

    Perhaps for retro pixel art 2D it doesn't matter as much but the bigger engines typically have way more tools for making your game beautiful such as advanced post processing effects that are multiplatform.

    • @thanosfisherman
      @thanosfisherman Рік тому

      @@marko95g it depends. Godot provides you with more tools out of the box to create a game. Libgdx is a framework and thus more barebones. It requires deeper understanding of how everything works under the hood plus you have to do everything by code. I personally use libgdx because I enjoy writing games for the JVM using Kotlin. Furthermore libgdx has a bit better performance on Android than Godot and the resulting apk is less bloated.

    Quality of the game is down to the quality of the developer. That's the clear takeaway, but it's a hard pill to swallow for many. Folks want to believe that if they choose the "right" engine, that will elevate their skills and guarantee quality, and by extension, success.
    I'm a Unity 3d dev, I agree #3 looks like a poorly-tuned Cinemachine follow-cam, but #4 looks like it's using some help from the Asset Store. No prior exp with the other engines, so I'd just be guessing. But the skill on display is solid, esp at Fiverr prices - don't work so cheaply, folks!

    I have no idea, really, I could throw some dice... :)
    Your point is a valid one, it doesn't matter to the player at all. For the developer it is far more important to choose a game engine they're comfortable with, than looking at the capabilities of the engine. The only counter argument is that different engines have different ceilings, so if you're making that AA or AAA game that needs to do a certain something very very well, that may tie you into a specific engine.
    Owh and the other important factor I think is community, both Unreal and Unity have a heads up on the competition that they have a HUGE community so it will be easier to find help if you're stuck, or to find tools made by others that you need to complete your game. But there too goes, you need to find the community you're comfortable being a part off and that may not be one of the bigger ones.
