I Made Him Eat Like Me for 30 Days (INSANE Results)

- Recently, I shred down to 11% body fat with a fat loss meal plan I thought was pretty easy to follow. But then Kevin, our head engineer here, comes up to me and asks… "If I ate exactly what you ate, could I get the same results?" Which got me thinking. Can the same fat loss diet really work for two people with totally different body types and lifestyles? To find out, for the next 30 days, Kevin’s going to follow the exact meals for weight loss I did, and we’ll see just how much fat loss he achieves and how you can use these fat loss meals as a cheat code for burning fat.

So, here are the fat loss meals Kevin ate: yogurt and oats for breakfast, chicken wraps with veggies for lunch, chicken salad with an apple for an afternoon snack, peanut butter pad thai for dinner, and my Greek Yogurt parfait for dessert.
Time to get his measurements. Kevin’s starting weight is 229lbs. Based on his current activity levels, this fat loss diet should put him in a deficit of 600 calories daily. Hopefully, resulting in 4-6 lbs of weight loss in 30 days. But we’ll also be tracking Kevin's waist circumference, as research has found once you reduce your waistline by at least 5cm, you unlock several health and cardiovascular benefits.
On the first week of following the meals for weight loss, Kevin struggled with energy levels. And part of that was my fault. Because he wasn’t a fan of the first overnight oats I made him, he was consistently choosing to skip breakfast. This means that not only was Kevin in a higher calorie deficit than we had intended, but he was also missing out on a big chunk of his daily carbs to fuel his workout and the rest of the day. While Kevin won’t notice this right away, after about a week, the carb stores in his muscles and liver will start getting depleted. This eventually leads to what’s known in dieting as “hitting the wall”.
But despite warning Kevin about it, he was still reluctant to eat breakfast. While his weight was coming off quickly, I was getting concerned. Not only is there pretty strong evidence suggesting that those who “skip breakfast” are more likely to re-gain fat after a diet is over, another major predictor that somebody will re-gain their weight is how much muscle they end up losing during their diet. And if Kevin continues losing weight at this rate, he’s likely to start experiencing muscle loss and eventually start to crash. And on day 10 of his fat loss meal plan, Kevin finally hit the wall.
So, I decided to put my chef hat back on and test out some more overnight oats recipes.
And by utilizing members of our Built With Science team to make sure Kevin was remembering to eat each morning, Kevin was quickly having his energy bounce back while continuing to lose weight on his fat loss diet. At his 2-week check-in, we found out Kevin lost over 7 lbs in just 2 weeks. While Kevin’s weight loss was on the right track, I realized there were some serious problems with how Kevin got such fast results. He’s avoided going out.
That's an area where we definitely want to improve because, again, I want Kevin to do what's sustainable for him in the long run. So I gave Kevin a few of the secrets I used to enjoy going out without seeing all my progress disappear. One of it is “preloading” his stomach with protein and veggies before going out.
Now, there’s something else we’ve been neglecting that will be key to Kevin’s long-term success. His activity levels. I got him to just be more active and take more steps per day to prevent post- fat loss diet weight regain. But there’s 1 more piece of the puzzle to ensure he doesn’t regain the weight he loses. See, I couldn’t possibly expect Kevin to stick to the same meals forever, even after the 30 days were up. This is why strict “meal plans” only work in the short term until you can’t stand what you’re eating anymore. Research suggests you get the best success when your fat loss diet is tailored to your individual preferences. And luckily, with Kevin’s skills in the kitchen, he was already one step ahead of me.
Time for the final weigh-in. Kevin came in at 216.4 lbs - so he's down 12 lbs in 30 days. While I usually wouldn’t recommend losing weight so quickly, once Kevin upped his daily calories to our 2100 calorie target, his rate of weight loss slowed down to a consistent 2lbs per week. And the visual results are pretty striking. He’s literally starting to look like a different human. But what’s even more impressive is Kevin actually lost an entire 5cm across his waistline in just 30 days, which is a great indicator that the weight he did lose was mostly fat rather than muscle.

Keep going, Kevin. I am challenging myself to lose 5 Cs in thirty days due to you. My weight is fine ---it is just too big in the love handle area.
You got this Kevin!!
Go go go Kevin
You got this Kevin! I believe in you.
thanks for the support everyone!
We need a part 2 with you being fully jacked by the next summer
Go Kevin! You deserve to be hot! 🌞
tbh the diet hes giving you is still pretty bad/stupid but ofc you lose weight eating like he does while being much heavier to start out with. Just leave out anything that comes from a plant and you can eat as much as you want and will lose weight. Carnivore diet is king and always will be.
Do carnivore. You'll get better results way faster.
You got this!!
Full respect for him participating and sharing his experience publicly.
Keep at it Kevin! I’m 45, had two back surgeries, got serious and changed my diet and lost 55 lbs so far this year and am still going. You can do it!
Great job!!
THAT'S AMAZING!!!!! I'M ROOTING FOR YOU!!!! 🎉🎉🎉👏👏👏👏👏👏💪💪💪💪💪💪🎉🎉🎉
Oh wow, great work! I'm 35 and hoping to avoid a second back surgery. Inspiration received 😁
Yay! GO Kevin!
I'm an ex-fitness trainer who had a baby in my 40s and lost all my work, my shape,... well, all of it. I weigh 35 lbs more than I used to and have no energy. Nowadays it's hard to work out, and it's hard to eat right. I used to tell clients, "You can't out-train a bad diet." I know it starts with food, but watching Kevin do it inspires me to try again.
Go @revloc5 you can do it 🤗
A friend and I were laughing at her recent experience in a gym. She wants to get fit, but is in the single hardest group to deal with.... peri-menopausal woman. The guy looked scared, pretty much ran away, and brought the most experienced guy on staff. lol
I can absolutely understand this, and I find it genuinely funny when young people think they've got it all figured out!
Show me a gym with a trainer or two who are fit, older women, and I will be impressed!
A baby in your forties is of course possible, but it won't be as easy to drop the weight as it was in your twenties and thirties... even with nursing. (which helps LOADS) Start with manageable activities that fit into your daily routines. Get a good stroller and walk to the nearest park, etc.
One of the better parenting books I read, suggested 'nine months on, nine months off' regarding baby weight. Keep in mind though, this is more likely to apply to the 20s and 30s, and will most likely take longer in your forties.
Go easy on yourself.... slow progress is better than no progress.
Go low carb. Check Dr Ken Berry, beat diabetes.
Go Kevin! Would love to see a six month progress video!

Kevin “chicken breast tastes like sandpaper”
As a cook I can tell you there is a way to get it very juicy.
1. Only cook chicken breast pieces whole (not shredded into pre-cut pieces ). Cook whole breast first and then if you must, cut it to smaller pieces after the entire process below. This helps retain more water = juicier
2. Temper - Never cook chicken when cold. Rest it at least 30 minutes at room temperature before cooking. This makes sure you don’t have to overcook the outside to cook it sufficiently on the the inside = juicier
3. Tenderize - Wrap it in plastic foil and beat it with a meat hammer or pot/pan to flatten it. This loosens the muscle making it softer (helps retain more water when under heat) and also evens it out so no side needs to cook longer thus no over drying. = juicer x2
4. Dry Brine - Salt both sides generously and rest for 1 hour. This causes salt to penetrate 5mm per side which will not only enhance taste but lower water loss during cooking. = juicier
5. Temperature - Use a thermometer to not cook it over 68 degree Celsius to retain water = juicier
5. Rest - let it rest for 10 minutes (works with all meat) covered in aluminum foil. This is because cooked meat tenses up squeezing all water to the center thus if you cut in now with a knife it will squeeze out the water from the center. As it rests the water evenly redistributes back to the entire meat = juicier bites
No more dry sandpaper chicken. Enjoy 😋
1. too time consuming. people will continue to pan fry straight out of the fridge and season it as an afterthought because it's what they have time for. they'll dip it in bachan's or something so at least its flavored paper.
2. this is all common knowledge anyway except you should probably recommend a deep overnight marinade at the minimum because even if the chicken is juicy, all these steps add zero flavor.
Thank you so much! If I make the time to cook and I do......I want it juicey! I'm going to do this!
@@lamhamzzzzzzyou are allowed to be productive when you let the chicken rest, so I don’t see how this is time consuming. I guarantee you can tenderize the chicken in less than 1 minutes as well.
@@lamhamzzzzzz Your comment gives off a negative vibe.
"too time consuming."
Believe or not some people do actually take the time to properly cook for themselves or loved ones. If time is an issue one can meal prep cooking lots of chicken for the next 3 days reducing the time in the kitchen.
""even if the chicken is juicy, all these steps add zero flavor."
Flavoring wont do much if the chicken is dried out (one can always flavor unflavored chicken but one can't un-dry dried out meat or un-cook overcooked meat). The issue Kevin had was with texture, not flavor hence my comment is in regard to moisture retention.

I LOVE this format! Please do it with more people! And check in with Kevin in a few months, that'd be a cool video.
Impressed with how Kevin tried and then applied his knowledge to make his own program work better. He also did the hard shift of adding more exercise and learning coping skills to going out with successes maintained. Nice work. Hope he does continue.
#GoKevin Imagine your transformation 30 MONTHS from now and how that will impact your life 30 YEARS from now!
If he loses 2 pounds per week, in 25 months he will be reduced to zero! 😜
if he gets down to even 195 he'll look different.
#GoKevin Kevin was reallly inspiring! Fitness influencers aren't always the best home cooks & I knew right away Kevin's palate wasn't finna like them overnight oats. As a home cook who likes nutrition, here are some secrets I've learned:
1.Whey is for shakes, Casein is for food (e.g., oats). It mixes way smoother & doesn't curd w/ heat
2.Monk fruit sweetener instead of stevia if you don't like that aftertaste
3. Look into other food cultures before using bland low-calorie substitutes (do better than cauliflower rice)
4. Deli containers are dirt cheap, come in many sizes, & do everything a mason jar can (e.g., use mine for pickling & overnight oats)
This is great advice. You can also cook in the morning. Guys might not be used to it, but it's worth the ~15 minutes for a hot breakfast (eggs, bacon, bread, pancakes, bagels, or leftovers).
@@TheGameChallenger I definitely 2nd this! Even if you don't usually eat breakfast, it's a good time to prep overnight oats for after dinner or getting a marinade started
Deli containers are cheap because they aren't meant to be re-used. They will increase your plastic intake. Use glass, it will be cheaper in the long run as long as you don't break them.
it's a good job he's a coder so he can afford to substitute tuna and shrimp for chicken breast. [edit: and Lobster! Also, FYI, if you can eat fattier protein like that try braised skinless bone-in chicken thighs, way better than chicken breast. Chop an onion, a few carrots, add a can of tomatoes and arrange as many seasoned chicken thighs as you can in one layer on top in a slow cooker. Cook on high for 4 hrs. If you forget to season you can always do it afterwards, just don't judge the taste of it until you have. For deeper flavor brown the thighs before layering/you can also use chuck steak here but again, I'd brown that in a pan first. Very easy, healthy, and solidly tasty.]
Do not use deli containers.....plastic in your food defeats the purpose of going healthy! Glass containers are best and ceramic or pans that don't have the nonstick coating in them!
Go Kevin!!!! My 20 yr old son, who is 5'9, has gone from 217 to 165 in the past year by following a similar meal plan and ramping up his workouts. He is a writer and a gamer, so he also spends a lot of time sitting, but the results have come! In spite of setbacks once in a while, he got back up and stayed consistent. He looks and feels like a new person. His goal is 160 and he is so close! You can do it too!!

You could honestly see the difference in his face even after the first week. Pretty crazy. It should be super encouraging for anyone overweight that is considering working out, the more weight you have to lose, the more impressive the transformation and the more rewarding your journey will be. Kudos to Kevin for putting himself out there.
Less water retention. If I eat bad food I have a swollen face in the morning. Also the meal plan is a basic but good one that boosts metabolism so he burns calories throughout the day.
Go Kevin!!! I went on a weight loss journey two years ago because the doctor said my cholesterol was heart attack level. It took a year to go from 255lbs to 167lbs. I kept at my diet and still maintain it but have leveled out at 175lbs on average. Your trainer Jeremy knows a heck of a lot more than I do but consistency and continuing with the program and entire lifestyle change is worth it. I have more energy than ever and can keep up with my 6 year old and my cholesterol is now acceptable. GO KEVIN Keep it up!!!
Go Kevin! Huge respect. That kind of drastic diet change is hard. Keep it up!
GO KEVIN! A year ago I was at 36% bodyfat and now I'm around 17%? It's a lot of long hard work, but it's totally worth it.
For me, I got into health & fitness after I saw how small changes positively benefited my finances. It's insane how so many of those skills crossover. All my best to you on your journey. YOU LOOK FIERCE MY DUDE!
But It is always good to do exams before start a diet. See how your body is working is the key. I usually don't see UA-camrs asking about this.
If you're body is not okay, diet and training won't work, and people can get frustrated with it.
@@Bolawaycalorie deficit always works, simple thermodynamics

I’m impressed! GO Kevin! Wow 🤩 Kevin you have almost exactly the same starting weight and waist measurement as me. I’ve been following my food plan for 6 weeks now and have lost 6.7 kg - about 14 pounds 10oz.
I’ve also been reconditioning my muscles gradually after a long period of inactivity due to illness, so I’ve gained about half a kilo in muscle.
I myself have done a transformation . From 118kg to 87kg in 3 and half months , just buy cutting down sodas or any sugar drinks, and walking 6km a day. Now I'm adjusting my diet.😮
Same here, I used to sit at home and go gym once a blue moon less than 5 times a month.
After I started working I walked 10k+ steps daily and started going gym at least 4 times a week.
I've been doing this for a year now and went from 110kg to 74kg

3:14 when glycogen stores in muscles and liver are depleted, this is known in dieting as "hitting the wall", where energy levels drop and you might feel bad. so i guess it's important to ensure a good carb intake.
Feeling bad doesn't necessarily lead to bad thing
@@spd3ictpro i disagree. when you hit weight loss depression (either because of low carbs or because of low body fat percentage), you feel miserable and it's unsustainable, it makes you wanna stop the gym and just eat a lot of junk food to try and alleviate the suffering.
@@HakuCell Agree, to an extent. As someone who used to eat the standard american diet (mostly carbs, junk, ultra processed stuff. Never even fruits/vegetables.. ever, always hated them) Long ago, I tried this 30 day experiment (to prove a friend soooo wrong & how insane she was, lol) of following what she could not stop talking about. BBBE (beef, butter, bacon, eggs.. as much as you want, whenever you're hungry) The first three days, I almost gave up prob a million times. It felt like what I assume withdrawal feels like. Cold sweats, nauseous, MUST stay near a bathroom, achy & my brain wanting those ultra processed sugars, carbs, etc. 24/7! We've all been sold, addicted to & made to feel awful from those things.. so food mfrs can keep us buying & them profiting. "Food" isn't what it was long ago, none of it. I made a ton of super crispy bacon to snack on, whenever I got the urge for something else. Prob had more bacon than I'd ever care to admit. LOL After those first 3 days tho, seems I switched from carb/sugar burning for fuel... to using protein/fat. It can only be explained as a fog clearing. No more stomach issues, no more LOW energy.. slowly the cravings for sugar went away. Not only did I end up apologizing to my friend for me being so dismissive about something I knew nothing about... here I am years later.. still doing it & NEVER FEELING BETTER. My labwork is perfect, A1C down to normal, no meds... tons of energy & very sustainable diet. Weight lost, clear minded, aches/pains nearly gone w/ no inflammation anymore. I don't even think about eating, it's just part of the day.. that 'noise' is gone of constantly wondering what/when the next meal is. Plus, the grocery savings doesn't hurt either. :) I now have a variety of meats, seafood, bacon, butter, eggs & tiny bits of dairy/cheese here & there, but that's it. Only thing I'd change if I could, is that I wish I had found this sooner. Turned 52 this year & never in better health overall.
@@mmanda515 what's your LDL-C and ApoB?
Your body makes glycogen when you eat enough protein, and you don't get the blood sugar highs and lows. He should be loading up on good fats and protein in the morning. then he wouldn't have to snack on carrots to "get through."
Congratulations Kevin! Keep it up man. I look forward to future updates.

Overeating on the weekend is ofc a subjective concept. If your usual routine involves eating unhealthy throughout the week and on weekends, but you switch to healthier foods and are in a calorie deficit during the week, you may not need to change much about your weekend habits. It’s often more effective to track calorie intake over the course of a week rather than just day by day. Trying to stick to strictly healthy foods while out with friends, especially when they’re eating fast food, can be hard to sustain long-term, or even trying to lower your daily intake even further to prepare for the weekend. However, if you’re maintaining a calorie deficit during the week and keeping your weekend intake relatively the same, you’re still lowering your weekly intake, just at a more sustainable level.
Absolutely! I think what he was referring to was throwing it all out the window and way over doing it ok the weekend, like above what you typically would have. For someone who struggles with that, they could incorporate and more significant deficit Friday or Monday to counteract that a little but it really is all individual
No it isn't, you're embarrassing yourself. This isn't a video about all the possible 'what if' scenarios any given person could have regarding their eating habits. It's a statement of fact that it is common for people to sabotage their progress with their weekend habits. Nowhere was it stated that it's true of every single person.
@@cenciende9401 You must have misunderstood my comment. I’m not saying that anything in the video is incorrect. I’m simply offering my perspective of an additional approach to achieve a sustainable lifestyle through food, to avoid self-sabotage. Naturally, everyone is different, and what works for one person might not work for another.
He didn't just eat "one meal a day"... he drank pop and snacks in between - why leave that out?. It also looks like he consumed foods with maltodextrin which makes it tricky to lose weight.. OK - I've seen enough! Good luck continuing, Kevin.

Starvation mode is a myth.
@ there’s a reason there’s a best selling book called Fast Like a Girl. Men and women are NOT the same (even though some would have you believe that). Women run on 3 hormones. That go up and down. Men consistently run on testosterone. Women can’t fast 24/7 like men. Especially when progesterone is high the week before her period starts.
