  • DO YOU WANT TO UPGRADE THE ALTERNATOR ON YOUR VINTAGE OR CLASSIC FORD? I WILL SHOW IN THIS VIDEO HOW I WAS ABLE TO CONVERT FROM MY OLD 65 AMP 1G FORD ALTERNATOR TO A MORE MODERN 3G 130 AMP INTERNALLY REGULATED ALTERNATOR. THIS WAS ACTUALLY A FAIRLY SIMPLE CONVERSION. THE 1G IS NOT A BAD SETUP BUT IT HAS ITS LIMITATIONS AS MORE ELECTRIC DEVICES ARE ADDED. AS I ADDED ELECTRIC FANS, LIGHTING ACCESSORIES AND A 1000 WATT INVERTER, i REALIZED THE 1G JUST WAS NOT GOING TO CUT IT. UPGRADE THE ALTERNATOR IN YOUR CLASSIC FORD. THIS PROCESS SHOULD WORK ON A GENERATOR TO 3G CONVERSION AS WELL BUT I HAVE NOT TRIED IT SO I CANNOT SAY FOR SURE. I DROVE HOT ROD POWER TOUR AFTER DOING THIS CONVERSION AND HAD NO ELECTRICAL ISSUES.

    Thanks for sharing .
You did the smart thing by leaving long enough wires on the old external voltage regulator wiring harness for any possible future projects etc .
I know in the past I personally have cut the wires off right close to a harness & later regretted doing so ...as the old harness became useless for a spare part or future projects ...so NEVER again I told myself

I need to pull that Falcon out of storage and get back to work on it, It was supposed to go in for 3 Months so I could enjoy the fall driving season with the vehicle that was in storage... that was a year and a half ago

Hey great video! My question is what does the lead in the factory harness lead to? I mean the green wire from the alternator, which connects to the red then into the factory harness. You mentioned it was to ignition, but does it go to the key switch? If this was in another vehicle what signal would need to be sent to that wire? thanks

thinking back... its been 5 months, my understanding it that it tells the alternator (or more likely the voltage regulator) when to turn on as it goes to the i terminal on the regulator in the 1G setup. Like I said its been a minute. I have since driven the truck about 2500 miles with no electrical issues. Having said that, The GM 1 wire conversions I have done are truly 1 wire and one of the drawbacks is the voltmeter idiot light doesn't work anymore when converting generator to GM 1 wire Alternator so I wouldn't rule out the wire also feeding the idiot light/gauge as it still works with the 1G to 3G setup. BTW I am researching how to have the idiot light and gauge when working a Generator to GM 1 conversion. topic for a future video

What make / model / year of vehicle is your 3g alternator listed for ...and what brand name is the alternator itself .
I know some ppl are saying certain 130 amp 3g alternators dont bolt right in ...the alternator mounting holes are further apart than the 95 amp 3g alternators .
I heard possibly the 3g 130 amp alternator for a 1993 Ford taurus with 3.8 liter will bolt right in ??

If I remember right it was a 93 or 94 Taurus The mounting ears are opposite each other. the adjusting arm of the alternator bracket pivots, i had no issue mounting with stock brackets

Does the neg battery cable remain the same ( grounded to engine block / frame )

yes the negative battery cable remains the same. I chose to add a second negative cable to the body mainly because I run a marine battery and wanted to balance the look. Come to find out it makes a significant difference having the extra ground. I recommend grounding to both but its not required
