  • Rowing at its best:
This awesome race was made possible by... the crazy French! Merci beaucoup les gens!
This Olympic final had two major risk takers, the British and the French. This time, it paid off for French. What an ultra tight race to the line and what brave, brave move when it hurt the most.

They put their mind on a last 90 stroke sprint.....3 x 30.....and in their first 20 they achieved reaching the lead......amazing....."nuts" in all sense! Incredible the French!

"Sykes" is the Australian boat maker. Boat company was created by Jeff Sykes a fantastic lightweight sculler who started off making his own timber sculls. he still races today, but has retired from making boats

remember in the late 80's/early 90's his sculls were everywhere in Australia with their distinctive "banana" shape? I rowed in a Sykes wooden (cedar) scull at school. They were pretty good boats, but i was switched to a S & B scull later made by Denis and Ian Carmody, another pair of great rowers

For the little story, the « password » they used to lunch that crazy sprint at the 1250 meters was the name of their respective daughter as they became father at almost same time. The name of their chid help them to absolutely transcend their willpower and disconnect the brain for the race of their life. How do I know that ? Michel Andrieux said it in a kinda Ted x speech I attempted.

I was in that race and we rowed an Ausrowtec. I don’t think they are around anymore.
And Matt Long came into the crew for Drew Ginn, who was injured. Great effort given Matt had to learn to row on bow side in 4 weeks !!!

I remember Ausrowtec - they made their boats just outside of Newcastle (Australia). The Newcastle Rowing Club used to have quite a few of them for obvious reasons

More great commentary...hats off to Ed Coode for coming back for Olympic Gold in Greece. I was in the Hammersmith rowers cafe the day Ed walked in after Sydney...a gloomier looking athlete it is hard to imagine!

I remember a few years ago I was coached by Michel Andrieux, such a great man, we used to joke about the fact he could do everything “Michel doesn’t need anybody to help him carry the whole 8”. A simple yet great man

One of my best race is the final of the LM4- IN WORLD ROWING CHAMP in 2010 in karapiro, and of course the final in 2000 and 2012 ! the men single scull in 2019 was incredible too :)

I would definitely watch a video on the 2000 GB 4. That was an incredible race in its own right, as I recall.

Remember the sentence about "Ed Coole" being out of the boat that won the gold medal, the four in 2000 ?
There is another story of a double that was pushed out of the gold medal quad in the following olympics 2004 athens.
The german W2x had been sorted out by Jutta Lau and thrown out of the W4x a few weeks before the olympics.
Those 2 had to reinvent themselves and build a double out of desperate hope.
They made it to the final and then performed against the swindel twins pretty well and were the fastest boat down to the lane winning a silver medal.
And a similiar situation but different again happened 4 years later, another german double in the final against the swindel twins but this time in the lead till the very last stroke when they lost with the tiniest margin like Damir Martin in 2016 of just 1 / 100 of a second. Different crew, complete outsiders and for sure no favorites, but the experienced finally won their second gold medal and retired.
Maybe worth another category , the outsiders or sorted out that took the opportunity as a challenge to win by outperforming themselves.

Great to have watched and enjoyed this video ..from an unlikely part of the world - India .. I know we're nowhere on the World Rowing map ..but i believe we have a pretty high level of knowledge on the sport ..
I'm a senior citizen whose been involved with the sport for decades
....as a Cox and then as a state and National Coach for the country ..
It's very frustrating that such a fabulous sport is hardly appreciated or for that matter is hardly known to the large numbers of sports lovers and followers world over.
But let me talk about the video for a bit being a coach i would have liked to comment on the technique of Rowing ..

Re Australia... Very fast pair who broke all the rules in training. 2 weeks on 2 weeks off...and Tomkins refused to stop feathering with outside hand. Boatmovers! Forced Pinsent and Cracknell into four despite world record in 2001. They could never correct wobble in boat at connection.

Australian brand is actually from New Zealand and used to be called kurtz or something like that. It got a new owner now. They’re called lazlo boats and make super nice boats. Way better than fillipis !!

I believe it used to be KIRS, like "Kiwi rowing shells" (but I can be mistaken).

    • @tech-wh2qu
      @tech-wh2qu 2 роки тому

As the other commenter says, the Kiwis used KIRS (Kiwi International Rowing Skiffs) until about 2009, when they began using Filippis. That company became bankrupt, and all assets were bought by a company called Laszlo, who make almost the same boats now.
The Australian boats are made by the Australian boat manufacturer Sykes, who still make boats to this day. As far as I’m aware, they never used KIRS

But I hardly was able to watch the race.. the presenter is obviously very passionate, loves the sport and is very knowledgeable... At international levels. However it is important that the audience is allowed to watch much more of the race.. I would recommend that much more of the race is shown and the voice is from the background after an initial face on presentation.
