  • The Argentine black and white tegu (Salvator merianae) might be the ultimate pet lizard, but its cousin, the caiman lizard (Dracaena guianensis), is a very similar lizard that looks like a freaking crocodile with a glorious orange head. So which of the two is the best pet lizard? To find out, we put the Argentine tegu and the caiman lizard head to head!

I'd love to see a video on lace monitors! I follow someone on Instagram that has one and he's absolutely gorgeous but also really, really big.
Also, maybe a head to head between caiman lizards and mertens' water monitors? They're similar in size and need similar enclosures.

I'm currently rearing a Trigonatus and when I first got him, he was flighty and nervous but has calmed down exponentially since I started conditioning him with pavlovian training. I've had a deep appreciation for all things crocodilian/alligatridae my entire life so it'd be nice to hear your take on them. :)

so I have a baby argentine red tegu. She’s like 3 mos? we’re working on taming her but it’s challenging because she’s about the size of a bearded dragon and doesn’t want to be held. i’m hesitant to take her out of her viv because of her size.
We do the letting her smell us, don’t come at her from above, talk softly- all the stuff (i’ve tamed animals before).
Does anyone have feedback or video of advice for taming tegus? Would love if this channel had one. Do they calm down as they age? Or did i adopt a salty little girl?
I swear i researched this all before getting a tegu and I own many exotics-

I bought an Argentine Tegu about a year ago. He is still an awesome animal. he does require a lot more stimulation than you would think for a lizard. He will often try to escape his enclosure. I let him out to roam the house every once and awhile. The enclosure is massive, and requires constant care. They poop alot and pee more often. However, they can be trained to stay calm when you pick them up to move them. he does not like being picked up, but I have to do it to move him upstairs. I'll be looking into the caiman lizard in the future.

As I stated in your video on Tokay geckos, I worked in a pet store, we also had Argentine Tegus, they were juveniles, but, I can also attest to the strength of their bite, even at about 10 inches. I've been bit several times by one of our Tegus, I guess he just didn't like me lol. Every time I'd go to feed, clean, and water, he'd run out of his hide, and nail me. Sometimes I'd be quick enough to get my hand out of the way, but most of the time I'd find my hand locked in his jaws lol. But, they were still really cool lizards, and I respected them and admired them.

Caiman Lizard has always been a pet i've wanted however down here in Australia we have quite strict rules when it comes to importing animals and the whole farm bred / possible parasitic infection thing with Caiman Lizards makes them impossible to get here.

hm, if I restrain myself to just two square meters besides my bed, I might be able to fit an enclosure big and spacey for a tegu. Oh well, one might dream....

Funny, the German name for caiman lizards translated literally would be "crocodile tegu".

    Thanks!

My kids have been wanting to to buy a saltwater crocodile but I’m just not sure they get really big and they live a long time. Plus I’m not sure if you can legally on them. I’m only joking I have no kids and I do not want to on the saltwater crocodile.

This is kinda dumb to ask, but could these 2 coexist in the same house with free roam? If they were both female. I know I'm getting one of them, but if I can get both and they be friendly towards one another illbget both

Snake Discovery have a good alternative to an aquarium - for their croc they use a children's pool with a canister filter with a heater in the return pipe.
