Did you try to paint a version with the old school pure white base? That was always the thing that to me made the colors so bright. Blue on pure white just pops.
hi . names Patrick. just curious as to how much you paid for these . I have 2 sets in boxes I'm looking for prices but they vary so much . no worries if u don't wish to say . thanks for your time .
@G Leggett Same. We had one bookshop in the small town I grew up in which had a lonely corner they would stack a smattering of GW product in. Every time I went in there I would check to see what new goodies they had got in. Bought my hardback Rogue Trader rulebook there as well as the good ol' RTB01 Beakie Marines box set. I even got the very same Terminator squad box shown in this video, had to save up for weeks and I was scared it was going to be gone by the time I had enough money. My child brain at the time obviously couldn't muster enough initiative to realise I could've put it on layby. Still one of my favourite GW miniature sets of all time.
"Giving it that sort of strange yellowy bone appearance that they used to go for back in the late eighties and early nineties" To which I immediately went 'What do you mean, that's how I paint bone _now_ ' only to come to the shocking realization that I've been painting bones the same way _for over twenty years_
When you reach your thirties and into your fourties, you realise an important fact; life is very short, time moves really quickly, and ten years is a blink of the eye.
Ohhhh my days Duncan, pure nostalgia. These are my favourite Terminators. Awesome paint job. And like you I'd find them at bootsales etc back in the 90s. Only thing your missing is a heavy gloss coat for that truly retro feel.
It depends on the Terminator. The VERY old ones have aged a fair deal (The three Prototypes and early Space Hulk plastics... possibly the first set of Grey Knights), but the 1st Ed "Terminator Squad" box really nailed the aesthetic that they've stuck with ever since. Even some of the more obscure variations (The 'Traitor Terminator' set and the two Terminator Inquisitors) still look pretty damned good... if not a tad small when stood next to newer plastics.
I think the proportions was best on these, overall I think the rogue trader harlequins also aged really well, they look miles better than hhe never ones imo, same with the old, 2nd sculpt deamonettes.
Admittedly, I've never painted a proper tabletop model, but the advice really works for painting irregular surfaces in general. Also, I like listening to Duncan say the names of paints.
What a wonderful video! The retro style is so cool, both for the video and the Terminator! The best line ever... "So now next time this Terminator punches someone so hard that they literally explode, no one can say he didn't warn them first." That is pure gold! Or should I say primary yellow? 😁
Boy that brings back memories. I remember sketching in the hazard stripes with a technical pen, and my terminators all being blood angels 'cause I couldn't paint a decent white helmet to save my life, lol. Great video!
holy crap I remember the hexagonal paint bottles from way back... I used to collect Tyranids in high school and our history teacher had exactly this edition of paints
1:19 Is there any better, truer way to paint Space Marines? ^.^ My entire Ultramarines army is painted in that style and I'm loving it. For Macragge! 7:39 Yep, red guns were the thing back then (and still are for me). Quoting from an old White Dwarf: Space Marines often paints their weapons red to resemble the blood the weapons will shed in the emperor's name.
I remember when I was a kid in the 90s, watching my older brother paint one of these 40K figures. They looked awesome to me and I was a fan of the franchise ever since 😊

Haha, now I feel old. When you opened up that Goblin Green I could smell it. Sometimes, actually a lot of the time. I miss the old paints and how they were formulated and mixed. I also miss this color scheme and the goblin green bases.
This is my first time watching one of your videos. As someone who will be getting back into miniature painting having not done it since the early 90s, this was really helpful. I much prefer the older, brighter painting style from back in the day, and is the style I’ll be going with when I come to paint all of my retro minis. I found the info bits you put on screen really useful, showing the brushes and paints you use in each step. And it’s great that you use modern, easy to get paints rather than using the actual paints from back in the day! Thank you!
Man! This video led me down a rabbit hole of 80's and 90's nostalgia.. ended up buying an old metal Space Wolves Terminator mini and the board game Chaos Marauders which we used to play all the time as kids. This channel is a treasure, so glad I found it as well as your GW videos!
I got back into the hobby at the start of the pandemic having been away since about 2005 and I decided to start a 2nd/3rd edition Ultramarines Army recently. I was lucky enough to find someone locally who was selling their entire collection of old citadel paints and I've been scouring eBay and Oldhammer groups on facebook like a magpie. I can finally have the army I always wanted back then. Going back and reading the old rulebook and codex has been such a treat and has brought back so many nice memories from my childhood. These tips will definitely be put to good use over the next few weeks! :)
As a collector of Ultramarines in the early 00s and getting back not the hobby during lockdown, I was so confused by the new dark blue colours. This is exactly what I needed. Thanks!
Really love this classic colour scheme, if i didn't already have a huge backlog of minis to work on i'd be so tempted to paint up some Terminators like this (although maybe once i'm more caught up i could paint some Blood Angel ones in a more retro style)
Its fantastic to see these retro guides recreating the 2nd Edition look with current paints so please keep doing them when you can!! Looking forward to hopefully getting a retro Space Wolf guide and please please do the Classic 'monopose' Goff Ork from the 2nd Ed boxed set as there must be so many of those lying around crying out to be painted!
I hold so much nostalgia for these metal Terminators. I remember staring at the 'Eavy Metal pictures in 2nd and 3rd edition codexes and White Dwarf, marvelling at how on earth the painter (could've even been Mike McVey?) was able to pull off these smooth blends and crisp lines. That's a huge part of my earliest hobby memories. Good times. Thanks for bringing that back!
Absolutely amazing video. I am old enough to remember these coming out new and that boxset is still glorious. Spectacular paint job Duncan, a real delight to see a bright and vibrant tutorial. 👏👏👏👏👌😊🖌️
Alright, let's go! My friend wants to start Ultramarines and your tutorials are brilliant! Thanks loads! Edit: in future, could you do a retro tutorial on epic minis?
Ahh the fond memories. These were the very first gw models I ever bought, a blisterpack with two of these guys in it. Many more were added later, of course, but these were my first, so it was fun seeing you painting one. They are still some of my fave models ever.
Best Terminators that were ever released! The times of Space Hulk & Deathwing! I have exactly the box you held up there. Of course my painting skills were not that good at the time.
This whole video too me back to my early teens of pushing mini around the ground with pillow hills and book buildings! Back to when we had to mail order out minis. And that base really hammered it all the way back! Cheers! 🖌

Your videos are helping out tremendously. I got the models, the paint and the tools only to find myself staring at assembled models with anxiety. We all have to start some where, thank you for putting out excellent material.
I'm impressed that Goblin Green hasn't dried out in 2 years much less nearly 2 decades since that version of the citadel paint came out. Those pots were only mildly better than the wretched twist offs they offered during 3rd edition.
So many times where simplest is best. I have kept the classic 2nd edition scheme on my Ultras since I started. Tried other more current schemes, but found the classic makes them pop far more.
I've always held to the belief that at some point in the early 90s, GW noticed they had a massive stockpile of bright blue and orangey-red paints, and in order to get rid of it, made the decision that their poster-boy armies would use those colour schemes, and just in case that wasn't enough, they'd start pushing the use of orangey-red for everything from spearshafts to horns. And that's why Ultramarines became the archetypal Space Marines, taking over from the much more sombre colour schemes of the Crimson Fists and Dark Angels, and why both The Empire and Dwarves in Fantasy got blue and red livery as the default army book colour schemes.
Gotta say, I kinda like the proportions on this model, and the pose too! Modern terminators sometimes go too much in the "short legs, squatting like crazy" direction. Really cool to see one that actually seems to be standing up straight!
Probably my all-time favourite GW miniatures! I actually bought that box set from my local book shop in the small town I grew up in. It was my second ever 40K purchase after picking up the Rogue Trader rulebook and RTB01 Beakie Marines box. Now, because of this wonderful video, I feel a moral obligation to collect a 2000 point army of "old style" Ultramarine Primaris. If we are all going back to the 90s, why can't they do it?
These scuplts were so much better than what GW produces now. Intimidating, imposing, but also industrial and believeable within the context of the setting. They were also a joy to paint, allowing beginners to get started without looking too ugly, and provided a base level against which more ornate models for characters and special units could stand out. Their new stuff is way too busy; the design studio has a philosophy of filling every square milimetre of their sculpts with crap. The effect of this is that the model silhouettes are very difficultt to read - special units don't jump out anymore, characters get lost more easily. They're also much, much harder to paint decently. Yes the new hyper-mega-ultra detailed models give high skill painters the chance to shine in a way the old ones did not, but the new ones also have a much higher skill floor. If you're not a good painter they look actively trash; there are few opportunities for entrants to the hobby to hone their craft with something that ends up looking "okay", and that's a real shame. Someone needs to start telling their sculptors no - these models aren't pieces to display the sculptor's skill, that's not what they're for; they're supposed to be models for a tabletop game and GW need to get back to making models appropriate to that. Anyone who's interested only in hyper-detailed models should go and work for Forge World or another company producing specialty miniatures.
