    I can't imagine how that sounds in person. That would not be fun.....but glad you posted it...cause it was fun from here.

    One thing I learned after reviving a 671 that had sat for maybe 2 years, racks almost always seize after a certain amount of time. If you plan to revive one, the first thing you do is free the rack.

    • @neotrailersllc5382
      @neotrailersllc5382 10 місяців тому +1

      how do you free the rack? what is the rack?

    • @jburnham9109
      @jburnham9109 10 місяців тому +1

      @neotrailersllc5382 the rack is the mechanism that controls the fuel rods for each injector. When 2 stroke Detroits are shut down, the fuel rack defaults to the full fuel position. This provides more fuel for start up until the governor takes over and pulls the rack back to idle.
      Because it defaults to the full fuel postion at shutdown, the injectors control rods do too. Over time these injectors and fuel rods get stuck from sitting. And because full fuel is where they ended up, full fuel is where they stay.
      Because of the way the rack is designed, even if you pull the governor control arm to shutdown, the fuel rods will remain in full fuel. The only way to shut one down is starve it of fuel (which takes time) or choke of the inlet to the blower. 2 stroke detroits have emergency shutdown flaps exactly for this purpose.
      So before starting one that has been sitting for more than a few months or an undetermined amount of time, it's crucial to free them all up. It's not difficult, just time consuming. But if it's engine you care about, you'll want to do it.
      Tons great videos here on UA-cam about freeing stuck injectors and they show how the rack is designed and how it controls each injector

    Quick little tip before starting diesels, locate and ensure the fuel cutoff moves. It may not work but at least you know where it is and hopefully it works, if needed. Grab it and slam it back(usually)

    There used to be a lot of those 70 series Chevy's on the road. When I was a kid, the city garbage trucks were like that, Detroit powered with automatics. I can't still hear the supercharger whine

    I hated those POS two-stroke Detroit. I used to drive a 1978 White Road Boss that had one. Leaked like a stabbing victim (they all do), loud, and gutless. They would also reverse themselves sometimes and you would see smoke coming from the airbox and air being sucked thru the exhaust.

    You're a brave guy to put your face on a runaway engine. Maybe if you put it into gear it could stop it too?
