  • The inside story of The Beatles earliest days as The Quarry Men. "Pre:Fab!" Book Review.
Original Quarry Men drummer Colin Hanton, along with author Colin Hall, present this fascinating look at the earliest days of The Quarry Men as they slowly transformed in to The Beatles. Colin was present from the very start, and witnessed the recruitment of Paul McCartney and George Harrison to the band. This is his memory of those amazing days, and in great depth!

I first got to be a Beatles fan in High School in our town in Canada, by reading Hunter-Davies book on the Beatles. That is when I discovered their early days before becoming a group called the Beatles. I bought in 1997 a book called John, Paul and Me Before the Beatles by Len Garry. I have the cd with Pete Shotton and Len Garry talking about those days with the Quarry Men. Your book I will probably purchase because I love the early days when John and Paul and George were just beginning. Thanks so much for sharing this book and the other two books, which are to me so fascinating.

In 2016, this New Zealander made a pilgrimage to Liverpool and was taken around various sites by a personal guide. When we got to the parish hall at Woolton, it was just about to be locked up, but they relented and let us in for a few minutes. I was pointed in the direction of where the meeting between Paul and John took place and took a photo. An elderly gentleman was inadvertently included in the photo, as he was just leaving the scene with one or two others. For some reason, he offered to shake my hand as our paths crossed going in opposite directions. It was Colin Hanton! Look backing at the photo, I now realise it was July 6th, so perhaps he was there for the (59th) anniversary. A memorable moment, to be at the very spot with someone who was actually there all those years earlier.

I was at Penny Lane last December and saw a signed Colin Hanton little promo and went back to the states and knew I had to get the book now that I had that promo. I am glad I did as I did find it fascinating and to get a first hand experience is always best ! I have to admit I was not that keen about the pre-Fab days but after this book I did learn and understand how important it is to learn of this segment of Beatles History !!! Enjoy the rest of your vacation Andrew !

Thanks for the video Andrew 😉👍 The book sounds very interesting (Colin Hanton's), but the thing that has always made me a little wary of these very early Recollections is how on earth do they remember all those fine details from so long ago, at their age now? I can't remember in detail, what I did on a certain day last month! I mean, there was no real reason without foresight to document anything about it, unless they were keeping personal diaries (and if so, cool!). I just can't help feeling that the original Quarrymen, and Julia Baird to be honest, are milking every last drop out of their stories over the years.
I have read Julia's book, one of the various one's available, before this 'new' one you have, and I thought it was very interesting, definitely. But my God, how many times now, and on the back of my book she even had her photo taken as the closest likeness to John's white album portrait as she could. I'm a John Lennon fan, not particularly a Julia Baird one, and I don't need her autograph.
    Just my opinion though.
    Have a nice holiday mate!
    Cheers 🍺 Jase

Oh, I guess my initial comment wasn't published, maybe because I added the URL to the documentary film. Anyway, I wanted to say, having spent time with Colin, I can vouch that he's genuine and and has an interesting story to share. I'm fascinated by this early era and curious about life in Liverpool, skiffle, and about groups of kids played around town. There's a down-to-earth quality to that whole scene and the book captures that spirit. Looking forward to seeing the film once distribution is set! I read Len's book, as well, but it's been many years. Len's a great guy in person, too.

Many thanks for this Andrew. Got myself a signed copy on order now from Strawberry Field. Looking forward to reading this, and will be looking out for the documentary. I recall seeing the original Quarrymen play a gig here in my hometown of Derby back in the 90's, they were great and I got to meet them afterwards, sadly some of them are now no longer with us, but I suspect this book is going to give us a flavour of the time that brought about the greatest band of all time. Incidentally if you want a good Beatles related read may I recommend "Abbey Road" by David Hepworth, a fascinating history of the most famous recording studios in the world, with a foreword written by none other than Sir Paul McCartney...

8:20 Yes, I find the general worship of Mark Lewisohn problematic, though not Lewisohn's fault. There are interesting, significant details from available books *not* included in TUNE-IN, like Colin Hanton's fascinating memoir. Even Ray Coleman's bio LENNON, just read, which I have problems with, has great little details passed over by Lewisohn. Even in a tome, Lewisohn has to curtail a lot because there are so many strands to this worldwide story that starts so provincially, and he does well to encompass so much yet give a sense of being there.
The problem is with Beatles readers who call TUNE-IN "the Bible" with all the dogma this implies. He's a fine writer and researcher, maybe the best, and to me if Lewisohn fell out of favour with Apple (?) that's good kudos - - Howlett certainly slackened with his Apple commissions. But Lewisohn can be improved on, and it's a lazy reader who thinks s/he's read everything by reading Lewisohn or who thinks Lewisohn is beyond error.
The Spitz Beatles bio is next up (not new at all), a shot in the dark but I hear Spitz, like Coleman before him, did many original interviews.

Andrew I have a interesting 🧐 question is standard album and deluxe edition records do they tell the same story like example four by one direction has 12 tracks and the total 🟰 duration is about 43:33 and that’s the standard version of the record now what happens if there’s bonus tracks like example one direction four has 16 tracks the total 🟰 length or duration from start to finish is about 57:19 does it count if it it’s telling the same story when the album sequencing change from start to finish aka standard edition what it comes with aka 12 tracks aka deluxe edition aka ultimate edition with bonus tracks that has 16 tracks? Four album 💿 japan 🇯🇵 total 🟰 duration is about 57 minutes while the ultimate edition is about 1 hour and 11 minutes does it still count telling a story and does the album sequencing change even though it still count as telling a story for album 💿?

There were a couple of other very short term players before Pete Best, but Pete was recruited when they were The Beatles, when they needed a drummer to go to Hamburg with them.

    • @geotechmore8855
      @geotechmore8855 Рік тому

@@AndrewDixonMusic Right. The Beatles needed a drummer for Hamburg so they got Pete Best. That's what I thought. Can you imagine if these drummers knew back then that they could possibly be in the biggest band in the world a few years later?! These Quarry Men drummers and members? Wow! I had a chance to see The Pete Best band here in a little club in Hoboken and I didn't go. I still wish I had gone. Its got to be really really hard to be sacked from The Beatles. Pete Best has a good attitude about it now. But it's got to be really really hard. Greetings from New Jersey! Keep up the awesome videos.. )^_-)/

I wouldn't spend the money on this book. Haven't these ancient "Quarrymen" sucked the teats of John & Paul long enough? Colin Hanton cannot reconstitute memories of things that happened over 65 years ago. He may remember a few facts accurately, but not enough to write a whole book. It's like the guy who wrote the book about the day John met Paul. Not only the day, but hour-by-hour. C'mon. . . Interesting how one's memory gets better the further back in time the events took place.
