Can't help notice you now appear to be talking to the viewfinder instead of the camera 😭
The McCartney Legacy is a masterpiece. I knocked it off in a week back in December. A real "page turner" as the saying goes. Talk about a deep dive. Wow! I'm eagerly awaiting volume two.
Great to have you back Mr Dixon. Have missed you.
Great to have you back. Love these kind of videos. Going through McCartney Legacy audiobook now. Great book indeed.
You opening box sets I wish I could buy myself are my fav type of videos! makes me feel included, haha!
Interesting facts, one of the assistant engineers on John Rock 'N' Roll was Sam Okell
Hi there, Andrew. Would I like to see more videos like this one? Absolutely! The Dylan box set looks amazing and as for the Kinks, well, it's a monster of a box, really! Fantastic stuff! Take care, and keep the great stuff coming.
Well I'm a time traveller from 2054 and I've just finished the new Volume two of Tune In by Mark Lewisohn .
So soon!? 😄
😃😃😃
Those are some great pick-ups, Andrew. I love Dylan and the Kinks!
Glad to see you back at it, Andrew!
Keep up these videos!
Yes I agree, the 2000’s John Lennon remix cds are the best sounding versions of mind games , wall and bridges and rock n roll
Good louder clean bass
Totally agree with you. I bought them all a few years ago and was glad to be able to find them. I wish W&B had been finished.
Thanks for he heads up on the "Springtime" vinyl - it's now in my grubby hands. What a bargain.
Its an excellent read very informative can't wait for volume 2.
Hi Andrew, Always nice to see what you have been buying, hopefully you can do more of these types of video's in the future 🤞Ps you can never have too many copies of your fav albums 😁
Put "The Kinks" badge on the t-shirt you have on now,it would blend in well.
I bought the new McCartney book after your review and can't stop reading it, excellent detail. Can't wait for Vol. 2 ! Thx!
I've been a Kinks fan since the opening chords of All Day and All of the Night blasted out of my tiny transistor radio speakers, in late 1964, shortly after I Feel Fine introduced feedback.
I always like collection updates. Cool to see what’s out there and what people are buying.
Great video, Andrew. Love to see what everyone's been buying on vinyl! I managed to acquire the Third Man Vault 4LP edition of Springtime In NY. It's magnificent.
Best McCartney book ever !
Looking forward to the "Act Naturally:The Beatles On Film".
Hi Andrew, good to see you and thanks for all the great podcasts. I really enjoy them.
You are correct, since Christmas there have been a lot of very good Beatles books issued. One of them, The Songs The Beatles Gave Away is also by Colin Hall.
All the best, Gordon Clarke.
Your book reviews are interesting.
In 1964 I had a great paperback book
about the Beatles covering their lives up til then. They also did another paperback about the Stones. I think it was written by Pennebacher. I've been trying to find info on this book with no luck.
Great update. I'm still to start the legacy book so behind you by quite a way. A box of mind games will be interesting as the original I got was a mfp - music for pleasure - budget version with thin vinyl.
Great video lots to check out . I’m stilll on the legacy book so that’s keeping me occupied ,thanks Andrew have a great weekend .
Yes please to more videos on your recent DISCoveries, as seeing them on camera is so helpful. I know how hefty the Kinks one will be to handle, but well worth it. Dylan's Vol 1 - 3 looks amazing, too. I'd never have seen those otherwise, so THANK YOU! 😊 🎼🎙🎸🥁
I for one enjoying seeing your new finds...and I covet that Pink Floyd t-shirt.
Thanks. Really enjoyed the video.
McCartney Legacy is amazing! I’m up to the release of Ram and I’m really enjoying it. Amazing level of detail. Thank you for recommending it. I also jumped on the Kinks boxset at the reduced price. It’s not my favourite Kinks by a long way but it was such a bargain and I do have all the other Kinks SDEs
Hi Andrew, great video. In 1995 in Spain, two spanish writers, Magi Crusells and Alejandro Iranzo released a book called "The Beatles, Una filmografia musical", a musical filmography would be the title in english. I don't think ever was translated in english, but it contents all about the movies, the promotional films, Tv shows, live concert films and all about Beatles in Spain, playing in Madrid and Barcelona. Same idea as the book you're talking in this video. All the best.
I love Bob Dylan's "Infidels". Produced by Mark Knopfler - it's a real treasure! I have heard the complete sessions with alternate takes and unissued tracks. Like you say, it's unbelievable how a track like Blind Willie McTell wasn't included.
Hello Andrew, I see my favourite Kate Bush album, "The Dreaming," on the wall behind you. Well done, sir!
Good morning ☀️!
Enjoyed your video, You may have talked me into that Kinks box.
I love these videos so in answer to your question….yes, keep them going. I’ve only just started to get into collecting Dylan so find the odd reviews I have seen very enjoyable. And a bit like you, I often get that "if I don’t buy it now, I’m going to regret it etc etc…". I just wish all the early releases of Bootleg Series were presented like the recent ones are in the nice 8.5" boxes.
I have all those remixes from the early 2000s. I had to hunt those down as I did not purchase them at time of release. Most reviews I read of them conclude that Rock-n-Roll and Mind Games are the best of those remixes. I have to agree with those reviews. Walls and Bridges was only partially remixed. They are my go-to versions of these albums. Enjoy your channel.
Thanks Tim. Walls and Bridges is the only one I don't have from that series, but I've always thought it was a well mixed album anyway so not been desperate for it .
Oh, The Kinks early '70s albums are great! Holiday, Celuloid Heroes, Alcohol...
Great Video Andrew i hope you do more of this in the future (The only thing is that i wish it was just like 5-10 minutes shorter or something, but that's just net picking)
The video was fine. Always interesting to hear your views. I picked up the Kinks set too and agree with your comments pretty much exactly. I purchased the previous 3 sets, that were excellent, and was, like yourself, less familiar Muswell Hibbbillies and to a slightly lesser extent Everybody's in Showbiz. I baulked at the £160 price tag but pounced on the £50 bargain. It has proved to be an excellent set and one I am so glad to have added to the collection.
Keep up the good work.
Hi Andrew - thanks for the Kinks box set tip - ordered immediately. I have had this in my want list with Amazon but at AU$240 it was too steep. That price is amazing and that set will go very nicely with my Kinks are the village green PS box. I for one am very happy with you showing your recent purchases, particularly when a bargain is to be had, cheers Matt
Hi Andrew. Got the same tip off from SDE as you. Unbelievable price for 2 of my top 5 Kinks albums.
Glad you got Kinks box set. 2. great albums. Muswell Hillbillies is a masterpiece
Great stuff Andrew, I can't wait to get the McCartney Legacy book...going to save it for when the weather gets a bit better. I'm reading the Terry Wilson 'Four Sides of the Circle' book at the moment which is very informative. The Matteo one looks good. Good Floyd shirt btw!
Cheers James, I think you'll find lots in the Legacy book that you didn't already know.
I’m still going through the McCartney Legacy book as well. Act Naturally sounds like an interesting book that I’ll have to get out when it comes out.
Pre-Fab also sounds interesting.
Hello Mr. Dixon
I love it when you show your latest buys
The early 2000s remixes of John Lennon’s Rock ‘n’ roll, Mind Games and Walls and Bridges are wonderful
I hope that we get a Mind Games deluxe Box Set this year or if not, I hope that we get the Sometime in New York City deluxe Box Set, that they promised us last year
I was really looking forward to that box set, and I was really sad to see that it did not come out
I am really looking forward to your reviews of those two new books that you showed and I’m looking forward to all your future videos in general
Anyways, God bless you and your family and please keep the videos coming
Mind Games yes! NYC hell no!
What we need Andrew, is your guide to smuggling these box sets into the house, without the GLW finding out 😅
It's an art form! Choose your delivery days wisely, and have a home office where you have a good view of the postman walking up the drive, that's my top tips....
Off the topic at hand, but have always loved that Housemartins LP you're displaying in the background.
One of my favourite albums of all time!
Muswell Hillbillies was originally recorded at Morgan using big old "BBC" type 1930's valve Microphones and gives it a warm sound. IMO it is the Kinks and Ray Davies' creative peak and their most working class album. The box set is indeed wonderful I also got it at that bargain price, but have replaces all the inners with polylined sleeves. If you look up close though the scanning of the sleeves is very blurred compared to the sharpness of my RCA Victor originals from 1971 and 1972. Fantastic album though espesh 20th Century Man.
Not sure if you have mentioned this on your channel, but the upcoming Mal Evans biography should be a fascinating read. It will include a volume of his diaries and manuscripts, so should be very insightful.
I've hardly mentioned it at all yet but will no doubt be an essential read!
I got the Blue Train mono, Stereo was a little too pricey... Mono sounds superb as well tho!
Always love the purchase videos because they never fail to introduce me to something I haven't heard before. I'm a 60's Kinks fan much more than a 70's Kinks fan, but the album Muswell Hillbillies sparked my interest so I immediately listened to it on streaming. Loved it! Keep it up!
Good to hear! 🙂👍
Although all their stuff is great, I prefer the mid-70’s to early 80’s Arista-era Kinks. Heresy!
@@AndrewDixonMusic Thanks for the great vid.Jumped straight onto the KinKs box set and got it for 50 quid .The only trouble it was exorbitant postage to Australia,so I am having it sent my sister in law at Bubwith near Shelby .Probably near you
@@AndrewDixonMusic Limey Lad......
Whatever happened to that bill Evans band 1968 jam with mccartney during the recording of " the Beatles".... there were rumours ( I can spell here in canada ) that it was going to come out .....qu'est ce que passe avec ça?
I’m hoping that there will be an audio book version of the new McCartney legacy but even on CD.
Love to see what you've purchased Andrew! Even more personally I'd love to see where the box sets end up on the shelf. Intrigued about your space allotment. I know you transferred a lot of cds to plastic sleeves (as I have done) to make more room but that isn't possible for records of course
Good idea! I saved a tonne of space with the wallets but much of that space has since been filled 😕
@@AndrewDixonMusic my space issue is out of control. Tubs and tubs of cds in the garage. I've got box sets in the laundry and books in the walk in wardrobe! It's a bit out of control. I've always watched your videos and am always intrigued what you do about making space for your new purchases. It's to a point for me now that I have to sell something to make space for new items
Looking forward for the live streams. I hope the logistics will sort out.
Regarding the Rock n roll mixes: that mix together with my father's Vinyl-album were for a long time my two versions. I think I preferred the vinyl. Maybe the cd mix was a bit too hard... And I remember that I liked the way Lennon in the additional songs thanked everybody who had participated on the album, the way that Ringo thanks everybody on the Ringo (1973) album. Is there a connection or influence here...?
Yes, I like these kinds of videos.
Take care.
Another forthcoming book that people might be interested in is George Harrison: The Reluctant Beatle by Philip Norman, due for publication on 24 October
Although I read that Philip norman tends to be lacking in evenhandedness towards certain individuals.
A good video! Keep 'em coming! Just got the Dylan Fragments super deluxe for £42.
Thanks! Was that the CD box or a vinyl version?
@@AndrewDixonMusic That was the CD box version. At that price I could not turn it down!
Definitely more videos mate
Andrew, two weeks is a long time between videos! I've missed you!😊I was hoping to finish that book before you, but you are way ahead of me! Anyways it's great to have a well researched book on McCartney after the Beatles. John Paul George and Ringo's careers often are either too generalized or ignored altogether, which is not doing any justice to them or their music. Now we need a well researched book on George and Ringo!
Great video as always, Andrew :) I really like that your channel features books as well as records. I'm half way through reading McCartney Legacy and I'm loving it. One of the best music books I've read in a very long time 🎸
Thanks! I've just finished the book in the last couple of hours, brilliant book.
@@AndrewDixonMusic It would be really cool if you could do a review of the book at some point, Andrew. I'd love to hear your thoughts. I must say I'm going to be a bit sad when the book ends. It really is a brilliant read :)
@@SophieLovesSunsets Planning to do it soon!
@@AndrewDixonMusic Great! I'll look out for it 🙂🎸
If I had my own UA-cam channel I would be sure to rank all the albums based on how many songs there are or so it’s good to do something different.
The Kinks set does look amazing, and that's a fantastic price, but the shipping to America almost doubles the cost ($61 + 58.50 shipping). Alas.
The gatefold design on the Springtime in NY set is like those old Unipak record sleeves. (Maybe they still call them unipaks?) They're kind of a hassle because you can't get the record out without bending the gatefold way back, which is probably why we don't see them much these days.
So Andrew, with it being March already in 2023, do you still think there is a chance of a Living In The Material World 50th Edition Box Set? I bought the 8 LP ATMP Box Set and am hoping for a LITMW one as well!
I certainly hold out hope, especially with the recent announcement regarding George's back catalogue and Dhani's cheeky remark about wanting to sell as much vinyl as they can get away with!
@@AndrewDixonMusic Oh wow I just read up on that I hadn't heard about the BMG and Dark Horse records catalogue deal. I read at the bottom of an article that the deal will be including: 'the launch of new merchandise stores for George Harrison', I wonder if that could also possibly mean some new merchandise for some of his albums like Living In The Material World, which somehow doesn't even have a shirt available for purchase!
hi Andrew, i looked at the Kinks box set on Townsend - it's still 50 pounds but add 67 pounds postage to Australia. GRRRR!
Ouch!!!
Feel free to share your purchases. I love unboxing and just sharing of nice quality item type videos
Yes mate, love these kind of vids.. Do you intend to buy and review the Dark Side of the Moon 50th? Haven’t heard many positives about it so I probably won’t bother but would like to hear your views.
And The McCartney Legacy is taking up a lot of my time too, but will be sorry when I get to the end….. All the best.
I'm not planning to get the Dark Side box, not seen anything to lure me in, but I might get the stand alone Live At Wembley album, that interests me.
Muswell Hillbillies is probably my favourite Kinks album.
Oh no.On the contrary,John Lennon's "Rock'N'Roll" album is one of my favourites🤦♀️
With waiting for Andrew. Fascinating info on the photo and the printers. Was the 2 boxes of photos really thrashed? Would you not think anything Beatles that valuable goes by signed courier? Or trusted employee? Either way it's a shocking error!!
I spent January deeply absorbed in Legacy. Best McCartney book I have read, the level of research is on a par with Lewisohn. It shone a completely new light on the early seventies, and I thought I knew a lot about McCartney! What struck me most, and I should have known this, was just how much of a grafter he was after the Beatles. Easy to assume he was smoking a lot of grass, chilling in the country with Linda and making the odd track. How wrong! The Ram sessions went on for months. He was such a perfectionist! Can't wait for Vol 2. That Bob album looks so lush on vinyl - wish Dhani would base the new Dark Horse George releases on that benchmark!
Great to see some Kinks kontent on the channel! As much as I love the Fab4, the Kinks are my favourite band, and that box set is a doozy. Too bad the discount is swallowed up by the postage, which doubles the price for those of us on this side of the pond, but still pretty tempting...
Hope you can find a good deal some time with no crazy postage! If you like Kinks Kontent this might be if interest: ua-cam.com/video/xC3yVq8wD14/v-deo.html
@@AndrewDixonMusic Thanks for that link Andrew, I saw your Kinks ranking when it was posted and enjoyed it a great deal. I liked your appreciation of Plastic Man, a song I get a kick out of but one that sealed the deal on Pete Quaife leaving the band (I got to interview Pete by phone when the Kinks were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and he told me as much). One of the greatest nights of my life was when we traveled from Canada to England to see Ray Davies play the York Opera House, and meet him after the show. (And I'm a big Kate Rusby fan too, hope to see her perform live one of these days...)
@@moxievision Did Pete not like Plastic Man, or was it just a tense time in general?
I saw Kate Rusby live about 5 years ago, lovely relaxed gig!
@@AndrewDixonMusic It was definitely a tense time, I gather the failure of Village Green Preservation Society (which the band knew was something special, even if the general public did not) put Ray into a creative funk for a spell, and Pete didn't think much of either Plastic Man or the previous non-album single Wonderboy and had doubts about the future of the band. The U.S. Musicians Union ban and the downturn in touring didn't help either. Thankfully, John Dalton was ready to step in since he'd replaced Pete on tour previously after he'd had a car accident, and the band carried on admirably.
Kate came to Nova Scotia once, for a festival that was five hours away, and I wasn't able to make it to that performance. I blew my chance!
I love the remix version of Rock and Roll - I think it sounds fantastic. I loved the Mind Games remix too. Not a huge fan of the bonus tracks though, but I'd rather have them than not. I rather like the R&R album, much better than Some Time in NY City. As much as I like Plastic Ono Band... I listen to R&R more.
I got more research info from Colin Hanton's book than anything else - - Priceless primary memoir for anyone interested in The Quarry Men. I'm so glad he set that down for the record.
Just ordered old PM bio called FAB - - apparently many primary interviews in the research so I don;t know why I missed it years ago. And published 2 years ago, 150 GLIMPSES OF THE BEATLES that also goes under the title ONE TWO THREE FOUR (exactly the same book).
It'll be interesting to see how the recession/hyperinflation, set to worsen for the entirety of 2023, affects the Deluxe market: whether it raises or lowers the prices or streamlines the product (they'll still call it 'Deluxe', like 'luxury apartments' have indoor loos).
Thanks, sounds like I'll enjoy the Colin Hanton book.
The FAB book, is that the one by Howard Sounes? If so I read that several years ago, very enjoyable.
@@AndrewDixonMusic That's the one Andrew yes. £3.20, 2nd hand in as new condition (so it says), so here's hoping when it arrives.
I would love to see that Andrew and I would love to hear what are your rankings of all of your favorite box sets of all time regarding either CDs or vinyl there’s not a lot of people I think on UA-cam that I’ve done that and it’ll be cool if you could do your favorite Beatles compilation albums everyone has done ranking of all the Beatles 13 studio albums but there have been a few people that have done Beatles American albums but there’s not a lot of people that would do Beatles compilation albums from the first up to the present day. if I had my own UA-cam channel I would love to do that.
Do you know if Pre:Fab! will be on Amazon in the US at some point?
I don't know, sorry.
Would that vinyl cleaning kit work on CDs as well?
No, CDs would need a different cleaner.
@@AndrewDixonMusic ok👍
Go Andrew!
I bought the the Kinks set at release last September even if the original £160 price was a little steep. I'd would highly recommend getting the Village Green Preservation 50th anniversary box set if you don't have it already another great set, not bad of a price anymore either, depends on where you look for it but usually about 80 quid at the moment.
Andrew would you consider doing a video about the bootleg series by Bob Dylan?
Definitely on the list! 👍
More reading for you. ha! There's a new Paul McCartney book, "Music Is Ideas: The Stories Behind The Songs (Vol. 1) 1970 - 1989" by Luca Perasi. 542 pages! This covers all of the Paul McCartney albums from 1970 - 1989, plus the standalone singles and many officially unreleased tracks. Which is the perfect Paul McCartney era for this to me. I can't think of too many unreleased Paul McCartney songs I care about, after the "Flowers In The Dirt" era.
I certainly want to look in to that one also, hopefully soon!
I'm sorely tempted to pick up that Kinks box set for £50, but that Townsend music gets really dreadful reviews, did you find them to be OK?
They've been fine when it's a good product they're selling. Only issue I've had is when they've got involved in selling borderline bootleg stuff passed off as premium products.
Andrew's back with a vengeance!
Have you read the book 'The Songs The Beatles Gave Away' by Colin Hall? I'm very interested in it but hadn't got the chance to get it.
No, haven't read that one!
did you made a video to review the book "Act Naturally: The Beatles On Film" ?
@@angelllacuna8889 No,.but I have done an interview with the author Steve Matteo ua-cam.com/video/HfodznaEv48/v-deo.html
Bob Dylan Bootlegs you have are brilliant!! Love the Kinks but besides the Preservation Act stuff those 2 albums are my least favorite overall. Although my buddies who love them totally disagree with me ! Very nice sets there non the less Andrew😊
£16 was a bargain!
A bit off topic sorry. I would like to ask Andrew if he listens to radio 2 and what he thinks about Ken Bruce leaving. Cheers
Hi, Radio 2 is one of the stations I listen to, I liked Ken's show but never been a huge fan of the music selection he plays. Can't blame him for leaving, can only assume he's getting a massive pay rise, I'll tune in to his new show and hope the music is better!
@@AndrewDixonMusic he was very shrewd in taking popmaster with him to the new station ! I’m not a fan of commercial radio in general, but I will still check him out. I love radio 2 but the top DJs are becoming fewer sadly.
Mark Lewisohn ... wo bestu?
I miss the opening music you used to employ at the beginning of each episode!
It might come back but there was bit of copyright worry over it even though it's free to use music, I didn't want all my videos with that music to get pulled!
Do you own George Harrison box the Apple years?
No I missed that one, but I have all the contents within it.
Andy what about book 'LIVING THE BEATLES LEGEND THE UNTOLD STORY OF MAL EVANS'? by Kenneth Womack (?), plis hope your answer.
I'm definitely looking forward to that one when it comes out! I'm sure I'll be doing one or more videos on the subject.
Did you hear about the guy constructing beatles songs with AI?
I saw there was a video about it but not had chance to watch yet
Hi, dumb American, here.
Could you provide some insight as to how some homes/buildings in the UK get a special name, in addition to the actual street address? Perhaps you could use Mendips as an example?
Hi, it's literally nothing more than " if you want a house name then stick a plaque on the wall with the name on and use it".
I think you can go more official and register it somewhere (maybe the post office?) But I think most people with a house name just decided "this is what it's called".
Can you please stop! I'm £50 poorer now after getting The Kinks box.
Sorry! 😄
Andrew , how are you my friend, this is a very interesting video, I have to purchase Pre Fab , I purchased other items, Strawberry Fields are so great and what they do, I have to go there sometime, I have to purchase John Lennon’s Rock n’ Roll, I just purchased The Art of the Beatles, Andrew it is Fantastic, and I have copy of Trojan Horse, that piece is fantastic your story behind it awesome, can’t buy it, so I’m happy to have what I do have , Thank You Andrew My Friend, TakeCare ,BeSafe, Steve
