  • We are investigating the Daegu class (Incheon Batch II / FFG-II class), the South Korean frigate for coastal missions. #frigate #rokn #navy
    Which development paved the way for creating the Daegu class?
    What are the features and capabilities of the frigate?
    Is the Dauegu class a frigate with insufficient weaponry, compared to its regional rivals, the Mogami class and Type 054A class?
    Why is the Royal Australian Navy interested in the Daegu class?

    Welcome to our channel. All the weapon systems are like books. They tell us their stories. The Weapon Detective investigates these books, reads between the lines, analyses, and tells the untold. At the dawn of the Second Cold War, the fruits of new projects give us clues about the future. But current weapon systems also have their own stories. You can find in our videos technical information, historical backgrounds, what happened during the development processes, combat experience and political projection. Let's investigate the weapons together when the Second Cold War is rising.

    I think this video sums it up best, that the Daegu is not a frigate but a heavily armed corvette.
    And the sacrifice of crew habitability probably won't be an issue considering its primary mission of coastal patrol with a 2 weeks on/2 weeks off patrol interval.

    Very interesting video, as the Peruvian navy just signed a $450M+ contract with HHI for a frigate, an OPV and 2 LSTs. Rumors states that it would be base on the Daegu class but with 3500-4000 ton displacement. I know that our navy will not use the newer Chungnam class as an AEGIS radar system is too expensive for us. I hope that if they decide to go with the Daegu class the higher displacement would resolve those flaws. Our current Lupo class frigate uses the LM2500 turbine so I hope they don’t choose the MT30.

    As a former maintainer I can tell you the MK 45 5" Gun maximum rate of fire is only 16-20 RPM. The previous Mk 42 could fire 40 RPM but it had a duel ammunition feed system. That's why the MK 45 is considered to be a light weight gun.

      Absolutely yes, and its 20 rounds drum limit to this number this capability. After someone have to manually reload the drum. Recently is available an automated AHS that can reload ammunitions from deposit having one or two arms. In the first case can load 10 rounds in the drum, in the second 20, so not considering barrel wear maximum sustained rate of fire is 20 rounds per minute

      A 5" gun on a corvette is pretty heavy; I wonder if they had shore bombardment in mind.

    • @Triggatra4258
      @Triggatra4258 Місяць тому +2

      @@petesheppard1709 RIGHT. 5" is definitely no joke on smaller corvettes. But on an Arleigh-Burke or other similar sized warships and destroyers, I sometimes wonder WHAT was the US Navy thinking? Because (to me) it literally makes zero sense to put that caliber of gun on such a large warship. Just my thought, what do you think my man? Because China (our modern day Soviet Union) definitely has much larger guns on their Type 052D and 052DL destroyers in the 130mm gun smh. China is not only catching up to US NAVY they are actually SURPASSING it in multiple domains and we should HAVE NEVER and STILL NEVER underestimate them and their capabilities/weapons/sensors/defense and definitely their #'s and most importantly their DOCTRINE of how they are being planned to be used. They will be fighting in literally their own backyard and we have to cross an ENTIRE ocean to get to the fight. USA is in a VERY awkward position and needs to make our next moves our BEST moves. Our number #1 advantage ---> allies. US has over 750 KNOWN bases around the world and Lord knows how many we DON'T know about and what goes on there. We are able to forward deploy key supplies(ammo, spare parts, food, etc.) That alone can make up largely for the tyranny of distance (that's what we call the issue of having to fight a war thousands of miles away from home ports, air bases and army/marine bases) but that in itself cannot fully compensate for the distance which honestly is the #1 thing working against the US in any war. Alrighty OKAY rant/analysis over. Comments/rebuttals are welcome and are actually wanted please I would love to hear anyone's thoughts and/or counter analysis. Have a great day in the USA!!! 🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲 Other countries too, but I am from MERICA' so YEAH GOD BLESS THE U.S. OF A❕❕❕ lemme know what country you hail from please❕❕

      That is untrue. In shipbuilding, specifications and design are finalized before construction even begins. HHI's official marketing materials (2020 to 2023) continue to refer to their 3100-ton frigate/corvette design as the HDF-3100 in reference to the baseline empty displacement. Note that I wrote 'empty', as actual displacement in service will vary depending on the equipment/ammunition/complement/cargo load out of the vessel in actual usage. Hence why 'fully loaded' displacement figures are a separate number.

      Chinese Type 053~054a and b classes are knock off of French design and 54b based on La Fayette class with Chinese made technologies. Modern, but considered inferior to Western counterparts. Korean Daegu class is a derivative of FFX system which is an advanced/next gen Ticonderoga systems.

    Too weak even as a large ASW corvette, let alone to be considered a light frigate. Not enough sensors, in variety & quantity. Yet too big.
    Compared to project 11661 or project 20380 or project 20385 (all of them are significantly smaller), they're basically OPV with limited ASW ability.
    Even type 056 family has similar weapons & sensor with much better ASW sensors at less than half the size.
