Marine Raiders, now that I know they have diving schools. One question, do you know the requirements to enter in the Diving School in case of the Marine Corp? Greetings from Paraguay
As a Force Recon Marine, I attended Navy 2nd Class Diver course in 1967. My first 30 days in Vietnam with 1st Recon Bn. was all diving, doing bridge checks for explosives, weapons recovery and body recoveries. Before we were sent to dive school, we became accomplished divers (Pre-Scuba School) to ensure that we would excel in the Navy school. What a great experience! Best time of my life.
The job in the army at least isn’t as cool As you think. It cool tho because of the dogs but anything past that sucks. I’m military BTW and I work with the 31K’s
The Coast Guard helicopter rescue swimmers deserve an episode. The AST’s jump into hurricane driven seas to rescue distressed sailors. They have to be among the toughest individuals on the planet.
As a commercial diver (certified in DCBC and ADCI) I can tell you the U.S. Navy Dive Manual is basically the bible in terms of dive manuals for both commercial, recreational, and technical diving. Almost every other country has there own dive manuals used for reference, and all of them are basically renditions of the US Navy Dive Manual. So I say that just to say that the US Navy is probably the BEST dive community lol
I can’t join the military because of medical issues unfortunately, but in my opinion the most honorable thing a person can do is serve their country. So thank you to everyone active duty or veterans 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Don’t know your situation but I just swore in two days ago after trying to enlist since 2015. I had to get medical waivers and was initially medically disqualified. They are making waivers for almost anything now but again i don’t know your situation. Best of luck friend and be safe 🙏🏽❤️
When I went to the Special Forces CDQC in 1993, the XO of the school was a Navy SEAL, and a number of instructors in the course were Navy SEALs. As I understand, the Navy is the proponent for all diving. In fact, there were a number of events in the school that were dropped and new ones added that matched events in BUDS dive phase. I remember diving in San Diego area and going over to BUDS to get air and O2 for our tanks as BUDS had a small number SF combat divers as instructors and they would take care of us. At that time, the Navy put all the SF instructors in Dive phase at BUDS. We guessed that as SEALs, they spent so much time in the water that some SEAL instructors didn't want to be Dive Phase instructors.
When it comes to military , law enforcement, and the private sector surrounding service, contracting, and security; the branch, department, or company doesn’t matter. Instead, what you should be asking yourself when looking into these careers is what is the availability of the resources these organizations may have and their capability. Larger organizations with access to more resources , or simply, organizations with more resources or the best resources means you’re going to get better training , more opportunities for certification, and more exposure with assignments or work details that in turn you can make a career out of or put it to good use in civilian life . Choose and do what works for your personal long term goals.
Really good advice. Some folks ask my opinion on which military branch to join and I ask them, what do they want to do. I understand it maybe hard for a 18 year old to know what they want to do. The above post about resources & capabilities is what I factor in my opinion. If you want to do aviation, go Air Force. I did time in the Navy and respect our aviation community but the Air Force lives and breathes aviation as an institution. Now if you want to learn how to fly, then drive a ship, and operate a nuclear power plant all within your military career then the Navy has that.
But this does blend out other problems that come with the size of an organization. Not focused on the military, but rather on private companies or other public services, usually the bigger the less flexible they are in basically any field. There are just many more things to consider than just size and resources
I'm curious if the Navy historically ever opposed the formation of Diver communities in the other branches of the military. Kind of like the Air Force opposing the Army of having their own aviation with the current arrangement of helos only for the Army.
The Army does have fixed wing aviation, it just can't be armed. The Army and AF cut a deal that basically breaks down like this. The Army has fixed wing aircraft, and uses them fir ISR, utility, transport, etc. They just can't be armed. The Air Force has helicopters, but they can't be used as attack aircraft and are used for security, search and rescue, etc. As far as diving goes, the Navy has to certify the other services diving programs.
The army's 12D MOS doesn't get enough respect. Becoming a 12D Diver is harder in most cases than becoming a Combat Diver and harder than getting selected in Special Operations. Their drop out rate is crazy. And of those that do make it, the work that they do is enough to make the toughest candidates quit. I went through OSUT with 12D candidates. I don't remember how many started, but i think only 5 actually made it, and only 3 maybe continued on with training after they saw what being an army diver is really like, past the recruitment videos. They put in some real work. As do all of my Engineer (Sapper) brothers and sisters in arms. Essayons!
No one had served on active duty in my family in over 100 years when I entered the USAF. I was still a teenager, very scared, knew I wanted to serve my country. The more I learned about Special Forces, Special Operations, the more I wished I had been born as a man. I understand & support the reasons why this was, I still felt I would have been a badass Navy Seal. I learned to swim at about the same time I learned to walk. Diving would have come naturally to me.
