    Recently, Japanese Katana market has been declining. There is only one shop in my town where can ask for my Katana sharpening. The shop also has no successor, only old craftsmen remain. However, women started to buy Katanas because of the influence of anime. It seems that customers have returned a little.

      I've kinda understood that it's been on the decline. Iaido isn't a common art to practice. And even then most people use blunted swords. Live blades are mostly made simply for the art at this point is my understanding.

      Most traditional crafts all over the world demand years of hard work for little pay, that's why these arts are dying. Only wealthy people or those who do not have to worry about money can engage in arts and crafts long enough to be masters.
      Even if a katana is expensive, most of the cost goes to the production, and the swordsmith only earns minimal profit. You can only do it for love, not for money.

      Hardly ahead of it’s time. Katanas were created based on tried and true designs and techniques imported from China and continued those traditions even as sword making methods evolved elsewhere. It was still a quality blade however and ironically resulted in the large importation of Japanese swords by China some 700 years after those technologies were exported to Japan.

    Sorry, guys, but judging by the close-up at :45, these are not the real deal. "Iaito" in this sense refers to practice swords used in iaido. These have unsharpenable, zinc-beryllium blades. The telltale giveaway is the mirrorlike, wet-looking shininess of the blade. A true katana has a subdued look due to the steel's grain. The furnishings here are authentic, though--rayskin, silk, wood, etc.-- and usually high quality, unlike the cheap Chinese reproductions. I managed to get one of these iaito on Ebay for $15.00, because it was being sold as a "fake" sword, which technically it's not. They're quite beautiful in their own right, lighter than a true katana, and well-balanced. I think you can find them online, where you can choose the style of blade and then the fittings you prefer.

    • @FalconWindblader
      @FalconWindblader 3 роки тому +1

      @@elegantgent9948 I assume you're not in Japan then. In Japan, owning steel swords, sharpened or otherwise, would require permits, which are very difficult to acquire. Aluminum or zinc alloy, both being noticeably lighter metals than steel, couldn't possibly produce blades that weigh the same as a true katana, if they were to be made in the same form factor.

    Interesting considering its illegal to own a sword in Japan without a legal permit

      What if I wanted to live in Japan? Is their places that are traditional in the ancient ways? I'd have to say out of any countries Japan, I'd feel I'd find Zen and feel the spirit of the Samurai. Except for the madness of it.

    • @afinoxi
      @afinoxi 3 роки тому +1

      @@robertstanson7866 I'm not Japanese so don't take my word for it , but if you're in the cities it's not much different from places like Germany. Don't know much about the countryside though.
      However , I do know this : If you're into guns and swords , if you go to Japan , you most likely will have to drop your hobby or need to actually go and do real martial arts like kenjutsu and get a permit for swords. Japanese laws on weapons is ridiculously harsh. For guns , you need to start out by going to a hunter's course and get a license and a shotgun , then after like 7 years iirc , you can get a rifle. Don't know much about the pistol laws.
