- Cold start on a 1990 Toyota HDJ81 4.2L Turbodiesel at -18F/-28C. 325,000 km on the motor, 1000km on rebuilt injection pump and injectors. A high-flow fuel pin was installed when the injection pump was rebuilt and I'm pretty sure turning it down would reduce some of the black smoke on startup.
That’s a legend . 25+ years old car is still working
Triple locked one, rare and valuable!
The lockers were certainly a major influence in choosing this particular 80!
Holy smoke 🤣😂
Gotta have a good battery in winter. Try to get a block heater.
it's actually pretty crazy that this started. most modern cars wouldn't start.
Glad I sold my diesel for a gas recently. Cheaper and easier to work on, starts more reliably.
Yes

Dont you feel manual gears best for all conditions?
As a general rule I prefer manual gears, since they offer a more interactive driving experience. But when driving offroad I find the automatic transmission is very nice, as the torque converter makes tackling challenging terrain much easier.
The manual transmission in Japanese domestic market HDJ81s has fairly low gears - since there are low speed limits in Japan - so it is not well suited to highway driving here in the US. For that reason also, I don't mind the automatic transmission.
@@treasurestateadventures1432no manual transmission very good and fast and strong
Auto 4 gear 👎
