Fencing is still expensive, with pressure treated lumbar still being elevated in price. I was quoted over CAD $32 000 to replace the entire fence in the backyard of my parents' house last year. Instead of paying for that and other things at the old house, I bought a condo now that it's just me living after my mother died about 18 months ago.
Sorry to hear about your mom. Big adjustment going from my home to a condo but believe me Heidi and I have discussed it. Maybe we'll pick your brains about how you feel and see if any of that applies to us👍
@Rvdaydream with me, it felt like a lot of work to maintain the place by myself after my father died in December of 2020, and when my mother died, the place felt empty. It's nice to have snow removal and landscaping included in the condo fees that I pay monthly, along with roof repair and replacement. The funny thing is that I am down the hall from where my paternal grandfather lived, and my parents rented it out for 10 years afterward to a retired couple.
So it’s not just me! Thanks for complaining & telling us your luck trying to find someone to work & get jobs done right! I have the same problem! I’m older now & can’t work like I use too! I want jobs done & will pay cash but, it’s getting harder to find people to work. Great video 👍 keep making more
It seems that it's mostly just those who are old enough to remember air conditioning being a rare luxury and are typically being gone during the day that don't care for air conditioning, despite it being increasingly a selling point in the north.
Back when I was still living with my late parents, it seemed like at the height of COVID-19, the local contractors were sort of catering to monied people moving from the Toronto area and refusing a lot of smaller jobs.
I am with you on this crappy weather. Hate it my whole life. I am from Ontario Canada, no where to go to make it better. Whole Country is the same, except BC Coast which is dreary in place of winter. I find it frustrating living in crappy weather from November through May.
OK, so I'm underestimating quite a bit. $6K...that's a lot for that. I've done tree cleanup myself, and in that situation, I think I'd do just that. Save the $6K and just do it. I'd get a good chainsaw (I gave away my Stihl when we downsized for RV life), with a couple of different size bars and spare chains, sharpen up the machetes and axes, and get to it. With it all cut up, I'd then probably stack it for firewood, but possibly stack it in the back 40 for anyone who wants it. This would not be the work of one afternoon, at least not for this 60 year old fat guy, but I'd get it done over a few days. Now I'm curious what the fence work will cost. I've done that, too, and it's not hard. Roof work I'd definitely leave to the pros.
That chipper-shredder makes me think of the social media NotSee Party censors. I get the frustration with workers who won't work. We've run into that too many times ourselves. But we've also found people who just get in there and do what they said they would. We hired one guy for some landscape work, to prep a house for sale, and when his assistant didn't bother showing up, he just did all the work himself. No change in price, the work looked great, and we gave his name to other people looking for that kind of work. I think a lot of people have gotten caught up in the culture of "entitlement", believing they deserve something without making any effort. I know some people will describe this in generational terms, but I don't buy that. I've known too many people of my own age range who are deadbeats, and plenty of Millennials who work hard and take responsibility. It isn't ethnic, or anything like that, either, though some people like to claim that one or another group is particularly hard-working, or particularly lazy. On the ideal place to settle down, I'm tempted to give you our choices, but it really depends so much on personal preferences. I do think it's a good idea to check out the quality of health care first. Some places in this country have *way* better health care than others. And IIRC, you get VA, which I've heard from friends varies even more than the non-VA health care.
I totally agree about getting out of the town and in the country. And its hard to think of leaving a place you no the issues already. The unkown issues of another house unless you pay a ton for a new place. The traffic in myrtle beach would be the con on there. I love to go there though. We went last 3 years. Im so happy there. Staycation for a while for us. Cleaning out sprucing up this year. But i dont have to have perfect either. Just trying to make things more comfortable. Ill declutter till prices go down. This waiting period till retirement is a weird time of thinking about what you really want for your future.
So Mike, When are you going shopping for another RV? Are we going to see you in a drivable or something small like a teardrop or what? But to answer your question, I would look at New Mexico. Similar to Arizona in that you get a lot of sun but not the extreme heat. Just something to consider... Take care, Pat
I dunno... We been looking at pop-ups to Class A coaches... New Mexico was ok we missed seeing green definitely more brown out there(dusty too).. some of the cooler spots out there were too much elevation for health reasons(something probably acclimated to)
@@Rvdaydream Look at Silver City, NM. Just a little further north of I-10 and not nearly as hot or as dusty. A lot more green there too. Arizona has a lot more to offer than Yuma or Quartzsite. Look around Show Low or Flagstaff. Just food for thought. Take care, Pat
Have you considered New Mexico? Some areas have less extreme temperatures and sunshine. I’ve been following Rusty 78609 on UA-cam and his travels in Texas and New Mexico have him located in a tiny home near Alamogordo. I’m a NEOhio resident who spent several years in Texas. When I would drive from Texas to Ohio I was always surprised how cloud cover seemed to begin at the Ohio state line.
We enjoyed out west as long as it was green.. Unfortunately, It seemed more brown and dusty.. Some of the cooler spots were nice But elevation was a health issue.. I laughed when you said there was a cloud cover line starting in Ohio..lol
It looks like you are going through your own insurance company. If so, they should subrogate against your neighbors insurance company (third party carrier) to get your deductible back. Your insurance company will cover the claim as per your policy, that is, they will most likely depreciate your fence based on the age and condition unless you have replacement value. You could have attempted a direct collection from the third party carrier where you may get full replacement value. You are seeking pre-loss condition. The insurance adjuster should have inspected all damage related to this loss, such as your garage roof damage, damage to your yard, etc. It's shorts weather here near Myrtle Beach, SC. Our house is in the country with a creek on it. Everyone in the neighborhood is from Jersey except one from PA. Homes further inland are much more affordable than those at the beach. Coincidentally, I have been talking about this same subject of weather. I have noticed that there is a lot more sun here than in New Jersey, which is similar to Ohio. It's always overcast in New Jersey. The weather here is pretty good except for July and August, which is very hot. However, the whole east coast is hot too. If you want to look here SC we will leave the light on for you. I have an open RV pad with 50 amp service available too. I know a realtor that handles the affordable areas inland. Gotta go and watch the rest of the video!
Right now we are trying to get in touch with the neighbor (heard she is concerned 🤔) Would be nice to get the rest of the tree out of there (of course not our problem) I do think we need to be talking to her insurance like you said to at least recoop the deductible.. We shall see.. As for moving we have probably 3-4 yrs yet, we shall see. As I am typing this it is raining of course, lol. Making the best of it.
@@Rvdaydream Your insurance company should be working on getting your deductible back. We had a rainstorm last night. It is absolutely beautiful today! No humidity and actually a little cooler. Reminds me of days like this in Maine. One thing to note, there are a lot of critters here. Caught another deer on my game camera located in my woods in the back yard. There are raccoons, snakes (some poisonous so need to be careful), coyotes, feral hogs and even a couple of bear have been spotted recently. I have often heard the coyotes at night so I make sure that the coast is clear for my little dog. I have seen a large feral hog dead on the side of road. There are so many new homes being built here and plenty existing homes available for sale. No HOA is preferred. Got to watch out for the big box builders as they are terrible to deal with and a lot have quality issues. We are 10 minutes from town and 25 minutes from Conway. My guess was $2K! Hahahaha! I forgot what a mess that damned tree made! Funny you mentioned the shed mover dude that’s probably the same guy I’ve watched. Ex-Amish dude with wife and kids. I’m thinking of getting a second M-20, or maybe a different Engwe that may use the same batteries.

the a/c not running with summer approaching is a buyer killer. The worst scenario would mean a new a/c system.
There's a lot of people that don't care about air conditioning, I'm not one of them.
