Ive been watching Smooth Gefixt for quite some time now. And at first I was hesitant of watching after Dylan stopped being in every video but you've completely turned me around. Im loving the solo videos a lot more than I expected. Plus you keep cracking me up with your clumsiness please keep showing it in the videos :D. 16:06 they dont kill birch. That brown is a inner bark of birch, Phloem is just a innermost layer of bark. White part of birchbark is just for protection from sunrays in early spring. Birch cant warm so fast, fluids dont move from roots, and during cold night they dont freez. And under that white birch bark is another layer of standart bark.
And yet it is not. For many of us Fins tarp is just waste of space/something extra to carry. It's useful ofc, but you can build "Laavu" = 'lean-to shelter'. You can just use branches or moss, grass or hay etc. to make it good enough. Tarp would be ideal to make it waterproof fast but far from needed
Tarp was designed for that lean-to shelter to make it waterproof faster, tarp is not needed for that shelter and imho useless. I'm from Finland and summer nights can go below zero celsius and winters around -40C and F. Have been out there in both conditions, also in warm summer nights, best is lean-to 'laavu in fin' shelter.
In the rain as long as you already have fire, it's smart. Keeps the wet from the ground from soaking you that would be sapping your body heat, as well as providing a basic insulation layer. You get as much cold off the ground as the air around you
I think you are a very skilled guy. You have real bushcraft talent. And it's great to see such a passion in what you do! Please, continue making such great videos if you enjoy it!
i really honestly enjoy your survival videos one of the best intresting channel ...im so glad i found this..thank you..and please dont quit.love from india ✌💛
Out of just about anyone I’ve seen, I’d pick you to survive in the wilderness while stranded with. While many survivalist have similar knowledge and skill sets, I know of very few that have your level of optimism and attitude. That can be the difference between life and death in an emergency situation. Love watching you
Fair enough, I tried to go on a camp with a crappy knife I made myself, only because I lost my actual knife, had a great time, had to lug around a 2kg sharpening stone.
The knife did the job for which it was forged. But beyond all your video it was very good. He had all blood and sweat, humor but also valuable information. I liked the optimism with which you approached the situation that you are supposed to be, I think this is the right attitude in a real survival situation. Thank you.
Your content is top notch and you are not getting as much publicity as you would be getting. You are my favorite youtubers and I love all your video, with or without Dylan this channel is the best. P.S. I am watching this for like the 5th time
Nice Jules, practice, practice and practice you made it look easy mate. You are one of the most humble down to earth people I have came across, I wish you all the best brother
Dude I've been watching your videos for a week or so. Honestly man, you're super cool and chill and fun to listen to! I'm learning too! Also Dylan is a pretty cool guy as well.
You have an excellent grasp of the English language and many American idioms. You crack me up! You're brilliant! Thank you for posting this and putting a smile on my face.😊 And your survival skills are great! I don't think you need to worry about the guy who built that shelter. There was moss growing on the bench seats, so he hasn't been around for awhile.👍😊
Julius I have been going back and re watching the older vids. I like the sign on the shelter It said "Bushcraft Clubhouse", a sign on the out side of the frame. This was one good VID!!

You are getting so good at this, you are more and more comfortable n the woods. All the mistakes and trials really paying off :) Another fantastic video.
Julius! I do recall you mentioning in a previous video you would like to visit the rain forest one day. Perhaps the struggle of making fire in wet conditions can help you in a future scenario in a rainforest. We must be able to adapt to our environment. Good luck to you! -Dylan
love smooth music on this chanel also thought, that would be awesome to make some bushcraft trip but with some of guys just not to loose myself in the woods
Hello from Australia :-) i like you and your channel you are also quite funny you showed some real grit there in that lean to! I hope you have recovered from cutting your finger not a good thing to do , lucky it did not require stitches. Take it easy mate and i look forward to more of your videos :-) Julius if you ever come to Australia i would like to meet you .
Great video as always! I'm going to learn how to make a friction fire with the fire bow this year. What type/types of wood do you recommend? Thanks and looking forward to the next video!
This is great Julius. The link to the video where you forge this knife, is no longer available to watch and I really wanted to see how you made it. Do you have another link to it, or are you able to upload it please. Many thanks and best wishes from England.

Whenever I settle for a lean to type shelter I like to bring along something for a counter slope if the rain is coming in the opposite direction. A narrow strip that can be affixed to the top as an awning when sitting, or halfway down the back slope and draped over the body when laying down. I realize most of your videos are based upon the premise of not planning for anything more than a hike in the woods (this no food, fire starting materials except maybe a ferorod, and no shelter material ) but even a rain poncho can be used as a counter slope
I love your videos man and they always inspire me to get outdoors and take care of nature! Your bow drilling skills have increased a ton and I'd love it if you did a more in-depth video on how to make a bow drill including small details like what knot you used to tie the string onto the bow. I think that's a good video idea and you will get more practice and be able to pass on knowledge to rookies like me!
i found an old hatchet in the garden, put it into the oven and the steel got soft (i love it cause on a stone it get´s sharp as hell) you where righ on birch-bark - suckers cutted into the cambium and the tree will die :( i like the fact the bowdrill worked out - since you did not manage the batterie-light-up :D go on and proceed
You guys do a great job of showing how to survive. I'm completely new to this sort of thing. Never even been camping. Do you think you could do a raw beginners type video? Otherwise, great video :)
Not really ... imagine a tree trunk is like your arm, except 95% of the mass is your bone and all your bloods supply is right under the first few layers of your skin. Cut too deeply (and that’s measured in millimeters) and all the way around and everything from that point to your hand eventually will die. My dad keep an apple tree alive and fruiting for 20years with only a hand-width of love bark still attached to the roots. I think that camp was designed for people to come in with a tarp
it definitely lookslike a perimeter wall of a tarp setup
And yet it is not. For many of us Fins tarp is just waste of space/something extra to carry. It's useful ofc, but you can build "Laavu" = 'lean-to shelter'. Hi :)
I just wanted to add, that to my knowledge and to a cursory internet search, you don't actually kill that tree from removing just a ring of bark, and leaving the underbark still there, as it clearly is.
You would need to take off the sapwood (the young outer wood), as it is the layer transporting the sugars and water.
So good news, the tree will live :)
Interesting theory, however the inner bark might have been damaged here as well.
