Still commonly used in carpentry, hard to beat it when you need a marking for a long straight line between two points, fast, easy and precise. Its usually a spool of thread that you can wind up in a container of coloured powder, so no charcoal anymore. Easy to repair and refill, so it will most likely last a life time of even professional use. Just a great and pretty genius tool. My guess it’s probably an old technique, hundred if not thousand of years old. I’m leaning towards thousands, but that is just a guess. Whoever came up with the idea, hit the jackpot
I'd like to see you guys do some more chalenges. See who survives better etc.... may be with fishing. Cooking what you catch. And some shelter building from scratch. Love u r work
You guys are really expert at producing videos. For example, the way that you blend in shots of your wood work with shots of the dog is perfect. Keep it up, guys.
Interesting comment. I guess I agree but, seriously? From that whole video, the major thing you took from it was the 'slight hair on his face'... Kinda superficial if you ask me.
@@DanielDavies-StellularNebulla Not superficial at all. When you have watched these guys from the very beginning, you start to feel like they are friends and just like a friend you hadn't seen in a few weeks who changed hair styles, lost weight or started a beard etc that suits them, you would compliment them on it. Not superficial at all.
This is one of your best videos to date. There's no competition element which is good. You should both invest in a ten pack of thin work gloves. I'm an almost 50yr old carpenter and only started wearing gloves at work since it became mandatory about 10yrs ago. I'd only not wear gloves doing that kind of work, if for some reason I forgot to take a pair. That injury looks like it's at that pleasant tingly stage of healing. That injury will make you stronger. Happy Yuletide gentlemen
Absolutely stunning and inspiring! Very well done to the both of you, but especially to Dylan as I know how hard it can be to stay engaged with a project you can't actually contribute a huge amount of the work in. So again, well done! Onto the next video!
Nice one lads. I've made a few paddles over the years with my axe and knife. Must be 10 years since I made my last one and I still use it on occasion. Great film as usual. I like your films lads because it's not about kit and nearly always more about skills and what you can do with the kit you have 👍. Enjoyed that one fellas. All the best for the New Year 🔥
When I was a wee lad my parents took us to a theme park called timber town showcasing the early years of timber productions in australia.a man giving a demonstration on how to cut a railway sleeper with an adze used a piece of cordage to mark the straight lines ,he rubbed the corsage against a burnt eucalypt tree to cover it in char you took me back to my child hood when you used this method cheers guys and a happy New Year.
Hi you guys Loving your channel great videos as usual .watching you using the draw knife makes me think you should make a shave horse for future projects to hold your workpiece.
Fantastic end results! However, it was surprising to see the mask off the axe again while it was primarily being used as a hammer. Don't want to see either get hurt again!
cool video guys! glad to see the both of you together where you love to be! great job. I like watching the building of tools and such. jagr seems to love it just as much as your guys! what a good boy he is.
Very cool project! Well done julius it takes a lot of hours carving these paddles and they turned out very nice! Keep doing these videos i love watching everyone of them! Greeting from switzerland
Julius I predict that your paddle will get dry cracks despite keeping it moist. But I'm still surprised how a non-specialist can do such good carpentry. Of course there are ways of working that would probably have made your life at work easier. Greetings from Northwest Germany
Very enjoyable video. I like that bushcraft vice/ work bench you made to hold the paddle. Also Julius is very good at the detail work with the axe. Both paddles look very nice. How long did it take to make the paddle once you had the log split?
I attempted a dug out canoe 2 years ago. I put 8 months work into it ( every Saturday ) it ended up failing. I would suggest doing all the research you can and to be careful not to let the wood check.
Its called the BittyBigQ grill. We got one sent over to us to use and review, we just started using it and so far it seems solid, functional and practical to use. i wouldnt call it very lightweight/small but those are all personal opinions. (bit more on it in our latest gear vid)
@@SmoothGefixt Thanks very much. I just had a quick look there and it seems a bit pricey as an import, but maybe it'll be cheaper once UK distributors get hold of it. At the moment I just use old tent pegs balanced on rocks to do the job, but they're not great like! Thanks again. All the best.
hehe dont have to watch the whole thing! Its in the cooking equipment part, and julius put little category links in the description so you can skip to the part you want;) anyways, im in contact with the guy behind the grill so ill keep you posted on a link;)
I think Dillon is right about grabbing an insert from an old grill . I do most of my outdoor cooking on a Kelly kettle hobo stove. Big open fires use up way more firewood. You've probably seen Alfie Aesthetics small grate on tent pegs setup. Or set it over a Dakota fire pit🔥
Julius! Love the beard and that jacket with the gloves! You used to look so, well, a bit... sorry, but geeky? You look like a movie star in this video - like Che Guevara goes camping as styled by Dolce & Gabbana. Poor Grumpy Dylan is looking more and more like a hobo though.
Smooth Gefixt someone said I misspelled Jager again and I think I may have misspelled Dylan’s name (Dillon). I have a good excuse lol I was on a bad car accident and broke my back along with concussion. Just laying around watching UA-cam while medicated. Please forgive my mistakes, I love you
On another axe safety note; if you fit a leather axe mask before using the back to pound in splitting wedges then you remove the possibility of an axe cut like Dylans. In this video we see Julius repeatedly swinging an exposed blade towards his own face - That is not going to end well! Did we not learn anything this month? Please be safe!
During the making of this vid, Julius tried keeping the sheath on. he found that it would come off after 2/3 good hammer strikes so he gave up. i imagine a little paracord lace over the original strap would go a long way on that, and i will do this in the future!! (learned the hard way!) Thanks for taking the time to comment and to share your thoughts!! :) Cheers. Dylan
Theres something realy satisfying about those long wood shavings...
I showed that particular part to the rest of my family and they loved it just as much as 👌
Nice video guys💕👍💕
The chord and charcoal as a chalk line.. Genius
For real though. I wonder who came up with it originally and how they thought of it... We may never know

Fantastic shots and incredible editing. Deserves more recognition.
Really enjoy your channel, Jager stole the show that good looking boy needs his own channel.

Dylan - really glad your hand is getting better! - love
Great Paddles, and love your videos!
That was a lot of fun to watch guys;)
Dylan, good luck with the injury and Julius, nice beard ouwe!
Great woodworking, those paddles look really good...👍
Nice that you finished it epic video love your channel and content
Julius - I'm glad you apparently lost your shaving equipment. The hair on your face looks good.
I was just about to give the same comment, looks great

Agreed. I especially like the far away shot at 6:00
Lots of great tips . Always love your guys videos!!!! Learning lots!

That is impressive, guys!
very nice... i like this video and your comments...when using those carving tools (Y) good result.
A paring ladder would be a nice addition to your site
such skilled axe work

13:53 that's an interesting way to get a nice straight line while in the woods.
Agreed. Quite genius.
Thanks guys
what a bloody nice job. happy new year lads

Nice job, proof is in the trying out 👍
Nice vid guys!
The best to both of you and your families.
Happy holidays!!
Great job
Great stuff guys,, it's like the one hand challenge, but for real, Dylan,,, ha ha
Keep up the good work boys,, all the best for the New Year,,,
Looks so nice! Can’t wait to see them being used.
nice work men 👍
Nice work.
Great content guys love seeing the carving episodes and julius nice start to a manly beard there your starting to look like a real woodsman lol
Awesome video.
Awesome video
Wow that was very impressive good Lord
Sanding and applying some oil. Wouldn't that support the final result?
Besides that, great vid and happy new year to you guys including Jäger
Im genuinely impressed with the peddels. Also nice beard Julius, are you going to give Dilan a run for his money in the future?
far future maybe..... ;)
cheers. dylan
I loved this video, it was so interesting. I'm glad Dylan's hand healed up well. How old is Jäger?
10:24 yeah you'd best be going slow in that direction
Hey, Dylan, you need a hand?
At least he gets smart and sticks a block of wood between the paddle and himself
nice job!
prachtig om te zien weer, welke crooked knife gebruik je?
Very enjoyable video. I like that bushcraft vice/ work bench you made to hold the paddle. Also Julius is very good at the detail work with the axe. Both paddles look very nice. How long did it take to make the paddle once you had the log split?
Just protect your Crown Jewels from the Draw Blade Huh sweetheart. Otherwise ....yet again an educational video. Absolutely loved it
Happy New Year fellas!
awesome!
That is the ultimate father stick tool 10:40
Glad to see your hand is healing good brother, Do you think the injurry will restrict motion after it is fully healed? i hope not.
nice vid guys
Very informative, thanks, how many inches should a drawknife for canoe paddle making be, better to go for 8" or 10"?
I attempted a dug out canoe 2 years ago. I put 8 months work into it ( every Saturday ) it ended up failing. I would suggest doing all the research you can and to be careful not to let the wood check.
ah thats too bad! was it salvageable ?
@@SmoothGefixt it had to many cracks in it after it dried . It is no longer sea Worthy.
Beard is looking good
The cooking grate, Where did you get it? Can We get a link? Maybe a amazon link so you can get a bump
that wood smellt good all the way from new zealand
Need more vids!
can you make the bows agin you said you would build them
Nice videos!!! How are you going to dry the paddles???
Just pile them and then they will dry slowly
Didntndylan "hurt" his hand in the hypothermia challenge? I guess at least u had some practice for this outting hahaha great video brothers
Dylan, what is the grill at 7:13? It looks ideal. Can you send me a link if possible please.

For all that splitting you should have made a wooden hammer first.
Makes it much easier.
