  • Episode 32 - Outlands and Sigil
    Today we explore the Outlands and the very unique Sigil which is placed directly in the center. The Outlands connect the Outer Planes together through gateways, and Sigil is connected to everything via portals. All in all it's pretty bad ass.
    Also I've been told I pronounce Sigil incorrectly. Sigil (The City of Doors) is pronounced /ˈsɪɡɪl/ (siggle)

    There is a species native to the spire, the center of the Concordant plane of the Outlands, the Rilmani.. however, most people overlook these beings of cosmic neutrality. Great vid as always Jorphdan!

    I've just gorged on dozens of your videos in a row. This is some awesome deep diving.
    I thought aboleths originated on the prime material plane as the very first beings? And the mindflayers from the future are the only entities which the aboleths cannot remember with their primeval ancestral memories. So my theory was the mindflayers are the eventual evolved descendants of the aboleths which would make them both originally from the material plane, even though they're tagged under the lovecraft dimension.

    Funny tidbit someone once told me: You know that infinitesimal small chance that something can exist in a universe of infinite possibilities? The spire at the center of the Outlands is all those numbers summed. That is why it is infinitely high, but has an end.
    He confessed to been bullshitting me, but that right there describes the outlands to me down to a science. The sum of all those statistical flukes and variables.

    My personal theory (others must have thought the same too, but I had this idea some time ago) is that the Lady of Pain is an Overgod, much like Ao.
    In the wiki I found that in the novel Waterdeep by Troy Denning, Ao responds to a Master wich suggests he wouldn't be the only one in direct contact with this entity. So maybe there is an Overgod for each realmspace, including sigil?

    • @Millstone1985
      @Millstone1985 7 років тому +2

      There is only one Realmspace. It is the crystal sphere in which "the Realms" are found. It contains the world of Toril, its sun and neighboring planets. But yeah, other crystal spheres exist, and they probably have their own overgods.
      But Sigil isn't in a crystal sphere. The city floats above one of the Outer Planes.

    • @Millstone1985
      @Millstone1985 7 років тому

      Also, I prefer the theory that gets a mention in the DMG. The Lady of Pain is "the fallen creator of the multiverse". Maybe Ao's master used to answer to her.

    I kind of understand that a lot of people are confused by the lady of pain and I think the way she's able to do a lot of what she does is because of psionics in 3rd Edition any of you play 3rd Edition or second editions of this psionics is kind of broken that is to say way overpowered but how she's able to stop Magic from working how she's able to inflict wounds on people just by meeting their gaze her inherent connection to outlands and sigil her ability to neutralize or combate even the most powerful of beings if they enter her Realm points to the fact that she was probably one of if not the most powerful psionics users that has ever lived whether she's a psionicist or whether she's some type of Mystic I'm not sure

  • @Wildstag
    @Wildstag 7 років тому

    Man, ya didn't introduce Sigil the paradoxical way it is meant to be! The City of Doors, Sigil, is a wheel-shaped structure on top of an infinitely tall mountain at the center of the Outlands.
    And though I hate to mention it, if only because it was written without consulting the Planescape canon, but Vecna managed to break the "No deities in Sigil" rule, but it was mostly just one of his steps to true godhood from the lowest ranks of divinity.
    And yeah, all of your stuff is the surface level information, so I guess stuff will have to be left out. I'm just a huge Planescape fan. Perhaps you could cover factions of the Forgotten Realms next, like the Harpers or Zhentarim. Or even just realms like Halruaa or Elturgard.

    Jorphdan I'm really loving the videos you're making. They are nice and manageable with enough info to allow a guy to have an idea about the topic at hand, but not too much info that I'd be drowning. As a long time very casual player and a more recent DM I'm looking for good content like this to get more information on the lore and what not of the multiverse. But I've got questions about a bunch of stuff, like I know your videos come from a Forgotten Realms perspective, is there any way to get info from an ebberon perspective? The planes are the same right? faerun and ebberon are both on the material plane right? are all their gods interchangeable? are any of them the same but with different names? if the fey wild and shadowfell roughly align to the material plane does that mean you could travel from faerun to ebberon?
    Okay you don't have to answer any of that but are there any resources like yours a guy could look at? maybe a podcast or audiobook?
    If anything please keep making these videos. Oh and in a previous video I heard you say something about the doublydoo, do you watch AvE as well?

    • @Jorphdan
      @Jorphdan  7 років тому +1

      I don't watch AvE... not sure what that is. But Dooblydoo is a common UA-cam term for the description. I was thinking of Ebberon but I have so much more to explore in Forgotten Realms that it won't happen for a while. I did hear of another guy hoping to start a similar channel with Ebberon content, so keep an eye out maybe it'll happen.
      I think Ebberon is it's own thing, just like Forgotten Realms. It has it's own gods etc. The planes of existence are also their own thing that have become wrapped in with Forgotten Realms mythology.
      Finally Yes I think you could travel from Faerun to Eberron, or Dark Sun, or what ever setting you wanted. That's the beauty of D&D :)

    It's been mentioned before in other comments, but Sigil is pronounced with a hard "G" sound, like "SIG-il" not a soft "G" like the English word sigil. This is mentioned in-world as well, including "clueless berks" being mocked for saying it wrong.

    Can you Plane Shift into the Outlands or Sigil? Starting in the Prime Material, can you go straight to Sigil, or do you have to start in either the Outlands or another plane in the wheel, travelling into the outlands and then up into Sigil. Also, you said one cannot reach sigil except by portal, if one tried to fly up the Spire towards Sigil, would they simply never reach it?

    • @Jorphdan
      @Jorphdan  7 років тому +3

      Good questions! I think it's safe to assume there can be portals to Sigil from the Prime Material Plane, but I don't think you can plane shift there. Because Sigil blocks all teleports and conjurations. I know I read the spire that holds Sigil is infinitely high, yet you can see Sigil from the ground. So tough question, I think in my game I wouldn't allow players to reach Sigil through flight, or at the least they couldn't get in once they arrive. They would need to find a portal.
      Great comment!

      Wilkie Dickinson-Sparkes Canonically, you can't use magic to get in or out of Sigil, only portals, but the Outlands should be fair game.
      Otoh, The Spire is described to be infinite even though it's also always perceived to be merely "really tall" with a donut on top. Drilling a hole from the outside is probably out of the question.
      As for the original doors in the City of Doors. Who made them in the first place? Don't ask. Maybe The Lady herself, or Aoskar, the totes dead god of portals (guess who looked him?) Supposedly The City itself predates them both? But The Lady has always existed?
      Planescape is a dish best served paradoxical.

    I know it's been a while since you've made a video for the planes, but any chance you could do some for the quasi-elemental planes? Such as Salt, Vacuum, Radiance, Minerals, etc.?

    Something is bugging me; how do the astral plane and elemental planes overlap, since astral connects only the material plane to the outer planes? Also, starting on the material plane, can you get to any of the outer planes through the astral plane? if so, then why can't you go from an outer plane to any other non-adjacent one by the same means? Can the material plane be used just as the outland, as a shortcut? also, how do the astral plane and ethereal plane overlap? How can you go from one to the other? And how does the astral plane and the outer planes connect? (whats the astral planes' version of border etherial?)
