    actually i want to sincerely thank you, Joe, because you are the only one streamer VOD of whom i can listen to while working on assignments (!), artwork, chatting, playing games (other than DD too) and whom DD playthrough inspired me to take a bite of C++ to make console based textual dd-clone (didn't finish it bc didn't have time for it) and inspires me now to take a crack in C# whilst i am learning it in uni to try to make dd-clone again with more advanced methods of programming

    5:50:00 I would put in a system whereby you use funds or send out agents to go and find specific heroes, maybe just a specific class, a specific rank preference, or even, a specific trait(forest nun, vestal with weald explorer, adventurer, and tactician.)
    I would make it kinda like Majima sending out dude on expeditions like in Yakuza 0. Tell a little story of their travels, pay more for better results, maybe even commit a few of your roster to bolster your odds of success.
    That way the stage coach would still be there, but the randomness of the system could be alleviated.
    Also I would make YOU, a party member, and a good one, that can be taken on expeditions. Highly resistant to stress, to the point where high level enemies will barely even bother, but, of course there is a downside.....it's you. If you die that's it, game over.
    I've always loved mission in RTS games where Tassadar must survive. They are the best. Most people are cowards and put their hero in the back, but I put my hero in the front, because they have more hp.

    • @BigJoeBear
      @BigJoeBear  4 роки тому +7

      Redhook decided that the idea should generally be that the 'heir' is omnipresent, always there. This is better represented in a more ethereal way than a direct character (since that character may not be able to go on every run.
      As the story is told, we are essentially a part of every expedition, leading it. The heroes are just essentially the bodyguards we've brought along to protect us as we try and figure out what the hell is going on and how to end it. We command the flow of battle, but don't partake directly in it necessarily. We determine where the expedition goes, how to bypass threats, and navigate potential treasures. You're the mastermind behind every swing and see the game from your own perspective. You're there, just in the background.

      @@BigJoeBear But then, why doesn't anyone ever attack me? I get that I'm supposed to be leading but, boy it sure doesn't feel like it. Like, if I were a swine soldier, and I saw a dude in a robe in the back, I'd hit him first. That guy gets the ol ball and chain.

    • @BigJoeBear
      @BigJoeBear  4 роки тому +5

      @@tomhill3248 This comes down to the player's narrative. There's always room left in a good story for the receiver to place their own thoughts into it. In this case I'd say why go for the unarmed guy stashed away in the corner while there's an enraged barbarian swinging a giant poleaxe at you? Or that MAA is playing interference, in effect 'guarding' you, etc. It allows the player to partake in the narrative of the story as well, even if it is typically subconscious.
      In the end the enemy serve a purpose to the Ancestor and the Progenitor. You are unwittingly a part of that goal, if you the heir die prematurely the Ancestor's (really the progenitor's) plan falls apart. He needs you there with the drive to keep investing resources, and even more importantly as you learn, bodies into reclaiming the estate. The death and chaos created by the heir trying to reclaim the 'birthright' is what's feeding the Heart's rebirth. Heir dies, this whole process slows down, or even grinds to a halt.
      This is presumably also why the Ancestor managed to escape alive, when seemingly nobody else did, after opening the gateway. It's cyclical, and basically the ending of the game effectively tells you that you're the next ancestor. Doomed to repeat forever until such an inevitable time as an heir finally fails, and all is lost.

    • @tomhill3248
      @tomhill3248 4 роки тому +1

      @@BigJoeBear Well I would definitely go for the coward, because he's clearly important! especially if I'm a fish man, those things seem, smarter, more civilized then the others. I may not get to watch many movies under the see, but if I've learned anything from dealing with the ancestor, it's that dudes in robes are clearly very important.
      Also if the process grinds to a halt why is there a time limit in Stygian? And why do the bandit deaths not count? Or do they? And an heir finally failing, wouldn't that include death? His death?
      I was always under the impression that the ancestor was an asshat who fucked everything up, and that if it weren't for him, none of this would have ever happened. And that by summoning his son, all he did was ensure the heart of darkness's demise. Because he was, after all, a fool. The greatest joke of all, is that anyone sees him as anything more then the cowardly villainous idiot he is, that manages to craft grand plans that always fuck over everyone around him including his would be master.
      A true Tzeenchian at heart that one! With enemies like him who even needs friends?!

    Last video you were talking about what we'd like to see changed or developed in the second game.
    For me, it would be team synergies. They don't feel especially rewarding right now, but it would be nice if lore/thematically related parties of complimentary characters were better supported, both during combat and during camping.
    Religious team: currently only supported during camping. Could be expanded upon.
    Light team: could be fused with the religious theme. Some traits like warrior of light should be built into class abilities, etc.
    Dark team/stealth team: Currently, only the occultist can create darkness, and no one benefits from it except through traits and loot. There are synergies to be built around that theme: heroes that can shuffle their order easily if surprised could have some "darkness matters" aspect to some skills, perhaps passively triggering stealth bellow a certain light level, or having improved hit chance, or automatically criting on surprised enemies. One idea, the beast could be less scary when you don't see it.
    Hunter's mark team: just not impactful enough to be worth it currently.
    Blight team/stun team: Currently lacking support to be viable, and thematic connection between the possible party members.
    Bleed team: Currently lacking support. Some abilities should heal you or reduce stress if they hit a bleeding target. I'd throw in a new character who is rather conspicuously a vampire, or perhaps an old character could be reworked that way post-crimson-curse.
    Occult/apostate theme? Perhaps a team synergy that would benefit from and resist high stress? Throw in a pyromancer/alchemist hero who can be part of a synergystic light theme or synergistically occult, but not religious?
    I would make sure every character fits into at least two different teams. One way to do that would be to give every hero some passives, but I wouldn't let them have permanent access to those passive. Instead, I would pair passives with the more niche skills, and they would apply only if you have the skill in your bar but also apply when _you_ get hit or when you use your go-to ability, etc.
    Moreover, I would rework the different areas to make them more different mechanically. Currently, darkess works the same in all the areas except DLC, increasing loot but increasing enemy crits and stress. That could be changed to make each area more strongly unique by representing different types of exposure. In one case, darkness is replaced with frost, in another torches keep at bay the miasma of bugs, elsewhere light is automatically increasing in some rooms instead of decreasing but comes with insulation and thirst, etc.
    Anyways, just some thoughts. Cool playthrough.

    • @BigJoeBear
      @BigJoeBear  4 роки тому

      Interesting ideas, and I definitely agree having more play and synergy around the dark would have been cool to better reward higher risk play and make torchlight more of a strategic consideration beyond what items you equip.
      I personally like the freedom of not having to rely on specific team setups to get full character effect, and being able to toy around with strategies and comps. I'm sure it could be done well though.
      Area differences seem to be what they are leaning towards, considering each expansion played with the idea more than the one before. So that could lead to some interesting things in the sequel.

    Right at the end, the random nature of the wagon.
    I'd say if would help if you could pay 100 for a chance to get one of three you select - RP wise you're putting out a call for them and one of three may respond.
    500 gold for a guaranteed single class, and 1000 gold for guaranteed two classes plus a chance at a third.
    Needs some balancing and tweaking but to spend a small bit of gold for a character you want to recruit would be nice.
    You can't request the full wagon of course.

    • @BigJoeBear
      @BigJoeBear  2 роки тому +1

      The negative outcomes are easier to work around in my opinion, plus they generally full clear stress. The main benefit is simply that they have a roughly 15% chance of giving you powerful buffs for the next dungeon on that character.

  • @jetfan88

    I'm new to the game....soI have a quick Q. So, why (@2:08:00) wouldnt you try and have the Vestal disarm the trap? Potential for stress relief, right? Is the gamble just not worth it?

    • @BigJoeBear
      @BigJoeBear  3 роки тому

      The trap wasn't scouted, so I didn't have a choice either way. I know it's there because this dungeon is always the same (tutorial dungeon.)
      Even if I could, I still wouldn't. Healer stress is never worth a gamble, especially not for such a small payoff with such a steep penalty. Vestal's trap disarm chance was roughly 60%, not great. Healer will probably need to immediately run another dungeon as well., so lower stress is critical.
      None of this matters in standard game play, as the game is far more lenient than presented in this challenge.

      2 is ok, as in 2 she can at least aoe heal, but 1? You taking multiple vestals? What are you using as a healer if you take vestal position 1?
      I usually keep vestals in rank 3-4, unless I run a grave robber comp where robber is 4 and dances back and forth from 4 to 2, shuffling position 3 plague doctor and 2 vestal back and forth. Pretty good synergy since plague doctor grenades the enemy backline and then grave robber lunges/throws knife for extra damage, usually killing stress casters first round, but I always find position 1 to be best occupied by a class that can stun front rows, like crusader, hellion, bounty hunter, because this allows for reliable patching up wounds after the priority targets are dealt with...

    • @BigJoeBear
      @BigJoeBear  5 років тому +1

      Position 1 vestal with the right quirks, profane and the beads can crit for over 65 damage on champion difficulty in the ruins. Sometimes you just need to wallop. Pairs ok with a secondary healer, since she can slide back in a pinch. Very offensive focused ruins party. Done it before a few times. I like to rely on a Crusader for the healer, since they also gain bonus damage against unholy when healing isn't needed.

    • @Skrymaster
      @Skrymaster 5 років тому +1

      @@BigJoeBear I still don't get why you'd fit her as position 1 though.
      Profane scroll gives her more extra bonuses in position 2, and she can just as reliably macebash from position 2 anyway, while giving her more versatility in the skills she can use.
      Even with the beads, her base damage is relatively low for her to be a dps, and most importantly, her base speed with those 2 trinkets is crap, would rely on her having quickdraw + reflexes quirks to put her damage to good use vs fast unholy like gargoyles or ghouls. Even then, mace bash can't hit the back 2 ranks, which is where you need most of the damage to go, while you stun the front rank tanky mobs. Her stun can't be used in position 1 either.
      Sure, in ruins and only in the ruins, an area of the game I tend to spend the least time in because for the majority of the game deeds and portraits are more valuable, she's passable for damage, but her bonus damage to undead only makes her deal comparable damage to a crusader not fighting undead, and I tend to not specialize my guys to be good for only 1 area.

      @@Skrymaster I wouldn't ignore Hand of Light.
      None of this matters outside of torchless anyway, as you're talking the difference between moderate to trivial. Even with Torchless, running 3 vestals and a jester can be hilariously effective (not to mention the meme potential). Much akin to pre-CoM 3 HM and a pos 1 Occ.
      Sometimes you don't have a Dismas' head or a Crescendo box when you want to smash with the Vestal. Profane works in a pinch even for pos 1. Maybe you're running a HWM, and the vestal will be splitting time between position 1 and 2. Profane would be fine here as well.
      Unless you're running some absurd challenge, this game has plenty of room for fun or playful comps and itemization. No need to knit-pick efficiency.
      Besides, Ruins are awesome when running a challenge like this one. Wish I could spend more time there with my lovely Sisters of Battle.

      @@Skrymaster You spend the least time in the ruins? Well you're obviously not that great at the game. Ruins is the second best area for loot....best being the cove of course. That place is a bit more dangerous, sure, but it's obscenely wealthy. Both in loot (barnacle chests, fish) and in quirk removal.

      I've actually done extensive research on this, including asking a few French viewers and personal acquaintances.
      The general consensus is that both ways are considered correct. The word is French but its root is Italian (risposta). The defense of re-pohst comes from its Italian roots, however the actual french pronunciation of the word is closer to pahst than pohst, but isn't an exact match either. English speakers tend to instinctively default to pohst since that fits the expected pronunciation for the language.
      I prefer re-pahst as I personally view it as about as close as I'll ever get to the actual pronunciation as a person that doesn't speak French and generally has poor enunciation. Hearing an actual French person say it, it sounds like they merged an 'a' and an 'o' together, but it comes out slightly more 'a'. This likely adds to the confusion and disagreement among English speakers as you could certainly hear it either way depending on your biases.
      I had the luxury of not having a bias when I first heard it in an old French movie when I was a youngin, since the word was new to me.
      Now, if you want to know a word I say stupidly, that I believe also has French influence, wait until you hear me say gorget.
