Hey doc, is it bad to pull the back of my hair sideways to crack my neck?
ok
You're actually wrong about kids getting hyper after they eat. Kids 100% get hyper after they eat. In schools we schedule things around this fact. If the kids go play outside then go eat then go back to class, you just wasted half the afternoon. You need to make them eat then send them to play outside before going back to class. I absolutely believe you that anatomically this makes no sense, but that just means there's another non-medical explanation, not that it doesn't happen
Bruh only 3 comments (4 now) lol
What is the criteria for us to ask you questions for you to answer? I have a few. PS I found our Cells at Work analysis very entertaining.
As a doctor with severe allergies (anaphylaxis) myself, your point about allergies is so important and we need better awareness!! You can grow out of allergies but you can also develop them! For example, penicillins are one of our most effective antibiotic groups; if you’ve grown out of your allergy, it might be the best option! Love your vids Dr Mike 😊
Yup I’ve never had any sort of allergies, but recently I had to take amoxicillin for a tooth infection. I mostly just had a rash and hives for like 4 days or so after taking it. Weird it wasn’t during, but after. I’m not sure how you’re allergic after it should be out of your system? But yeah now I have that allergy apparently. I’ve only taken it once and was fine, but this is years later. 🤷🏻♀️
I hate allergies , got me almost half dead in Turkey , so I will never live in ghetto places , some people from central Asia Latino countries Arab counties can live there but a rich Chinese man can not
I developed a shrimp allergy when I was twelve and didn't realize it was an allergy, because all it did was make my throat scratchy. It wasn't until I was sixteen when I touched shrimp again and it made my throat swell up a good bit, but not enough to cut off airwayd, that I realized I had an allergy to it. It died down within an hour but I've stayed clear of it ever since, I don't want to test wether or not if I'm still allergic or not because there's that chance it could have developed into a more severe allergy then it was before
@@byuftbl My story exactly! And I still list amoxicillin as an allergy of mine.
I actually developed an amoxicillin allergy randomly. I used to tolerate it well, but the last time I needed it for a wisdom tooth infection I broke out in hives all over my body. Fun times.

The sugar rush study I read had kids and parents in a room, and in one part the parents watched the kids play with toys and each other.
Then the kids were given sugary snacks, and the researchers noted that while the children didn't behave any differently, the PARENTS were the ones that started acting differently.
In expecting their children's behaviour to worsen, they started intervening in situations that previously they were okay with.
When interviewed the parents had to rate their children's behaviour before and after, and the researchers found that in almost all cases, the parents rated their children's behaviour as way worse on the sugar, even though objectively, the difference in the children's actual behaviour was negligible.
But sugar does generate a potent dopamine and serotonin response which can cause an euphoric or "hyper" effect, this is why its so addictive.
@@ViDeTool just going based off the study, don't disagree that sugar can be addictive.

As a former Walmart night manager, the fruit and vegetables are actually pretty decent. They are delivered daily and they do a good job of keeping refrigerated and room temperature produce separate.
Depends on the store. I bought a bag of onions from a Walmart, went to cut some up for dinner the next day and found half the bag was rotting. Won't shop there for produce again.
Might go there for produce. I saw oranges in a grocery store that were moldy. Like, to the point where I began to wonder if it was a health hazard
SLUG QUESTION ANSWERED: Water moves in order to dilute salts & slugs have incredibly porous bodies meaning water moves through their flesh very easily. By pouring salt on slugs you’re drawing so much water out of their bodies that they dehydrate and die. (salt has a similar effect on humans, just not to the same extent. It’s why we get thirsty after eating salty foods)
YES! Same Osmosis.
doesn't salt retain water? meaning we'd feel not less hydrated? not challenging you, just curious
@@abdulwakil2613 water moves towards salt, so it causes swelling, i don't think this equates to usable water. we then need more water to dilute the saltyness?
@@abdulwakil2613 Salt dissolves into water, technically slightly changing the composition of water to where it's utilized differently within the body, I feel there's a bit of a misconception that salt "hydrates" or "retains" water but realistically all salt does is give and help with regulating and balancing the bodies water content. Electrolytes after a workout come out through sweat, hence why having an electrolyte rich drink handy is a good thing while also having pure water. While the thirst we get from eating salty objects exists you'll more likely simply have "dry" mouth rather than become outright thirsty.
Save the slugs!
Major respect mentioning that sugar rush isn’t a thing, there was a study of parents and their “sugar rush prone” kids, they interviewed the parents and kids to get a baseline, gave the kids sugar, then interviewed again. The parents said “see how hyper they are? It’s out of control” but the kids were no different than when they were interviewed the first time
That is a hard study to do, because as soon as you put the children in a different environment you alter their behavior.
Are you really trying to make the case sugar rush doesn't exist?
I used to get told off for being hyper and constant teased and always blamed on a carton or juice or sweets no I just have adhd
Feingold. Food dyes.
As a teacher, I think a lot of it comes from the excitement of getting candy. When are we giving kids candy/sugar at school? Usually at a party or as a reward. They get excited and amped up about it, because it's something they really want and they're happy to get it.
About salt killing slugs:
Slugs and snails, like us, have a very high water content that they need to maintain to survive, but unlike us their skin is very porous, this is how they get their water. They don't drink water like other animals do, they absorb it from the environment (this is why they are often seen in large quantities in the morning when there is dew or after a rain shower). The trouble with absorbing water through your skin is that it goes both ways, and they can very easily lose water through their skin. When you cover them in salt, the salt draws the water out of their bodies via osmosis, causing the slug to die of dehydration. The reason humans can eat loads of salt, is because we're so much larger, and therefore have a much much larger amount of water to expend (we also have much more sophisticated methods of retaining water), but the same principle does apply to humans. If you eat too much salt, you may feel like your tongue, mouth and throat are dry even if you drink water - because they are filled with less water than they should be. And consuming large amount of salt can lead to comas and even death due to removing too much water from cells. It's just that the amount of salt that requires is huge, compared to the handful of salt being all it would take to kill a slug.
i dont know why i read all of this but thank u for the fact
Thank you for taking the time to share.
That.... Is.... Horrible... :O Why would you even pour salt on a slug? Who came up with the idea to begin with?! Wtf >.

Dr. Mike: “you can even get this delicious apple juice delivered from Walmart!”
Dr. mike 30 seconds late: “just stay away from fruit juices”
he said that with totally different contexts
the salt on a slug thing is because they become quickly dehydrated and the salt destabilizes the mucus covering their skin.
And when you relativize the amount of salt to their bodyweight and that your bodyweight, no human would survive ingesting 5Kg of salt
And it absorb moisture out of the slug. Human made of 70 percent water. Slug is that squishy must have more water content. Plus, I think they respire using basic resporation through skin and pressure gradient. Hence easier for the water to seeps out. It does the same as human, although it makes us thirsty and the urine will be really dark.
No hate but I can't believe he didnt know that. It was quite basic I think.
So thats why they use salt to get rid of leeches, eh?

To me, the point of the Impossible Burger shouldn’t be health. Sometimes vegetarians really miss the taste and feel of a good burger. That’s ultimately all it is; an approximation of that. I think the listing everything vegetarian as “healthy” does a disservice to the vegetarian lifestyle, mainly because it is difficult to make health food taste as good as unhealthy food.
Yeah burgers are unhealthy and so are vegan ones
Glad to hear this acknowledged. I am a vegan and I love beyond meat. For me it isn't a health motivated at all, rather I just love burgers and am happy to eat them without having to eat an animal. Move of the morality of eating animal product for myself, and perhaps for many other Vegans.
@@GriffinK10 depends what is used in the burger
From what I understand, Impossible is aiming at eventually being a meat substitute for meat eaters, because meat is so resource intensive and bad for the environment. I think the idea is to eventually be cheaper than meat.
The point is to kill fewer animals, which is good for the environment. And yes, great for vegetarians and vegans because we get to have a burger once in a while. The question about whether it’s healthier seems to be a question brought up by meat manufacturers to deflect from the horrors of animal slaughter and the damage meat production causes to the environment.

@@joshnabours9102 40,000 Bananas in 10 minutes, that's 66.67 bananas per second, so I would say that's definitely not doable, nor in a couple of hours or even a day or two.

I remember watching an Abbey's Kitchen video recently that talked about how the "sugar rush" is a myth. Her theory was that since most households deem sugar as a treat, then kids get a rush afterwards because of the excitement of having it. If people didn't treat it as a restricted food, then that rush wouldn't necessarily happen.
yeah, I've seen it on scishow and maybe also healthcare triage. I think scishow also went into the psychology behind why the kids are "more hyper than usual"
Really suspicious about this still since I get a definite pep after eating something high carb low fat and or protein. Theres usually a small crash later too. I feel like people arent taking blood sugar changes into account.
That actually makes so much sense.
I worked at a Hello Fresh warehouse for about a year, and I was SHOCKED when I looked at their "plant based protein ground" and saw how many carbs were in it. Sure, there was a decent amount of protein, but that little 10 ounce block had something like 50 or 60 carbs in it. That's a lot of carbs to add to a meal that probably already contains carbs!
Just use your brain and don't add carbs to it. So just don't have bread or pasta or rice with it. Treat it like it includes those things already. It's not that hard, I do it all the time. Amazing. And my hemp, pea & brown rice protein powders have no carbs either. And neither does my tofu. Wow it's like I have an actual brain and can read the label and see how much carbs are in the things I'm putting in my body. Amazing.
@@Animal_lives_matter I'm not actually a vegetarian. I don't even really like most kinds of meat, so I wouldn't want substances that try to emulate the flavor and texture of it. My point was that Hello Fresh meals are very carb-heavy meals already, so the people ordering plant based protein from them are going to be eating a lot of carbs.
So, what.

That Gatorade part is so true and highlights the importance of speaking to a doctor. I used to only drink water during workouts and was having leg And chest pains. Doc suggested I drink Gatorade, helped me tremendously. I asked if that’s unhealthy, and she explained it like Dr. Mike.
Try water with a bit of salt in it. If you don't like the taste you can do a yoghurt-shake with salt and sugar.
The sugar and coloring in the Gatorade and other similar drinks takes away from the benefit of electrolytes. Make your own lemon/lime water or add some berries and a pinch of quality salt like Himalayan or sea salt.
Another great way to replace those electrolytes is to eat bananas or drink a coconut water-based sports drink. Potassium is just as good as sodium for replacing electrolytes

As someone with a penicillin allergy, it can be extremely frustrating that doctors never believe I'm allergic. When my daughter was born via c-section, the anesthesiologist was dead set on using penicillin with my spinal. As I'm being rolled into the ER, he's telling me he really doubts I'll have a reaction since most people who think they're allergic really aren't, but if I do have a reaction, I'm in the best place to have one. About 5 minutes into the c-section, I start vomiting, my blood pressure bottoms out, and he's pushing fluids like crazy to try to keep it up. He pushed so much fluid that my heart started struggling, so now they've got a cardiac specialist in there who ended up having to monitor me for days. And I couldn't hold my newborn for hours afterwards because I was so out of it and felt like crawling out of my own skin. It was a truly awful experience and 100% avoidable. A couple of years later I had strep throat and even though I told the doc at that very appointment that I am allergic to penicillin, what drug do you think she called in to the pharmacy?? Very, very frustrating!
That's so awful... They especially shouldn't risk it when you're pregnant! And ruined your first moments with your newborn 😢
That's terrible. I had a similar SNAFU when I had surgery. The doc gave me amoxacillian and wondered why my mom called him pissed off because I was still vomiting and covered in hives 3 days later. She took a look at the bottle of antibiotics... 🙄
I would've talked to a lawyer about that anesthesiologist. Willfully ignoring your allergy sounds like good grounds for a malpractice suit.
its ultra annoying tryign to explain i have a MASSIVE tolerance to painkillers, even thugh rarely take them. i guess that helps me thugh if they try to OD me liek i hear they been doing
A lot of doctors need to learn to listen to and believe their patients. As for that anesthesiologist, if there are alternatives (which there were in your situation) why not err on the cautious side?

Little known fact! The Eustachian tube is just the vessel in which the pressure in the ears is equalized. It's actually your inner ear cavity behind the Tympanic Membrane (eardrum) that is causing that pressure/release when you feel the popping in your ears. The eardrum begins to flex inward when negative pressure happens in the inner ear and pops back out when pressure is normalized. This is why yawning or opening your mouth wide helps reduce that pressure since the Eustachian tube is indeed located in the back of your throat and adjusts pressure accordingly.
Ok, but what if I have this popping in my ears all the time? As a former Wal-Mart employee, it hurt to hear you call their food "high quality" lol. I mean, it's not bottom quality, but high quality is over selling it a bit.
LOL- Oh my gosh-

You were never paid thousands of dollars to say it was good quality. With all their rights issues on workers as well as only ever paying a pittance for a salary, it is sad to see Mike has sort of sold out. I am curious, are you also allergic to betadine?
It's another one of those things that is in that same allergy group. Might be good to know ahead of any surgeries that you end up needing.
That’s sad. I’m glad I’m not allergic to Zyrtec, since I’ve got a horrible pollen allergy
Every time I tell people I have an allergy to allergy meds people look at me like I'm crazy. I find it odd though that a doctor would prescribe allergy meds for a food allergy, especially without further investigating your reaction to the seafood.

Got a hypoallergenic cat, and spent one week per summer with a relative with a cat. Now I am comfortable saying I’m no longer allergic to cats, and given how my allergic reaction steadily dropped in severity I think I can accurately state that life with a hypoallergenic cat had a significant effect.

RE growing out of allergies:
I had an egg allergy as a little kid, I could still eat cake or similar, but would get a really itchy mouth and a bit of redness around the mouth if I ate an omelette or similar that was mostly eggs.
It went away when I got older without me ever realising until someone made double Dutch pancakes (bacon and egg in the pancakes) and I got concerned that I might have a reaction but nothing happened. Tested it a few times afterwards and I have no reaction at all even eating boiled/scrambled eggs alone with nothing else.
Always wondered the mechanism as to how that works, does the immune system just realise it's not a threat somehow or what?
I was deathly allergic to strawberries as a baby but one day I told my parents that I wanted to try one again to test if it went away, and luckily it did!
Egg allergy is actually one of the most commonly outgrown allergies. I had an egg allergy too but the doctor did blood tests and said I should be able to eat eggs and I could.
@@GamingGardevoir Your parents were just like “well ok if you die today, you die today”

Dr. Mike: The is water in soda, you are hydrating.
People on the internet: Doc Mike said I should drink a 2 liter of soda everyday.
Haha
Soda doesn’t have water. Your body converts the carbonic acid into CO2 and water. It’s net dehydration.
Soda has a lot of sodium and sugar in it so technically you need regular water to clean out the rest of the soda.
As long as it's diet soda.
@@becks5198 There's an excess of sugar in there to cover up the extra sodium the manufacturers started adding in the 1970's to get people to drink more.

oh this I've been waiting for this
I'd love to see that! cause someone asked me how comes carrots are considered healthy for human consumption but considered junk food for rabbits (cause the sugar contents in carrots are too much for a rabbit so it can harm their gut and teeth if eaten too much.. a normal size carrot for a rabbit is like a human child eating 2 pounds of candy all at once, think of how much damage that candy would do to a human child then think of the damage that normal size carrot would do to a bunny)
The smell thing was interesting to me because I can smell when people have migraine headaches or even if they are about to get one
🤔
Woah 😻 so cool
That's amazing. How did you figure that out?
It’s really interesting that sugar doesn’t make kids hyper. When I was little, I was never allowed to have sugar for an hour before bed because my parents wanted me to sleep well.
I was actually still doing it till today, as an adult. I was afraid that even now sugar might keep me more awake 😂 I guess we learn more everyday, which is amazing.
Guess they should have been doing the opposite😂😂
To be fair, you shouldn't eat at all before bed.
I mean this is not a big deal, but that can make it harder to sleep or cause you to get a lighter sleep.
It's not too of a bad idea to not eat sugar before sleep for 1 hour. It helps your teeth if you dont eat anything for at least 30 min, then brush your teeth and go to sleep. Teeth need a break of at least 30 min before brushing them and I think perhaps after too.
Ive been told by the people around me that i have overactive senses, i can smell things that "don't have a smell", like helium, hydrogen, water, snow, and rain, i can also feel my bones growing or atleast thats what my doctor says is causing my occasional weak to crippling nerve pain that enjoys pretending bones are broken

Fun fact: According to the latest research in the microbiome field, taking probiotics is probably not so smart of an idea. On one hand, in most store-bought probiotics, the number of bacteria that are actually alive and fit enough to colonize your guts are negligible. On the other hand, a healthy micribiome is not just about the amount of bacteria, but the diversity of the bacterial population. Most of these probiotics are made of one bacterial species, typically Lactobacillus species, which are prominent in the gut micobiome, but not the most prominent. So, overall, taking probiotics, or food that supposedly can be good for the gut microbiome has a minimal effect on the recolonisation of your gut, and might be even harmful in some cases because it shifts the natural diversity of the bacteria. The only surefire way to build back a degraded microbiome is fecal transplant, but, for obvious reasons, that is only used as a last resort. (Sincerely, a microbiologist)
It helps me to lose weight A LOT. It doesn't make me have diarrhoea, but makes everything moving. Never been diagnosed, but I think I have IBS or something, because it doesn't matter what I eat or how much water I drink, I can't go to the toilet, sometimes for a full week. Since I started taking probiotics, everything just seems like working in a normal manner. I don't know if it makes sense.
@@vivienm2037 I have a book on fermentation and the author included a very similar story to yours after he started making and consuming kefir.

I’m starting to hear this so often but water has helped clear my skin and migraines quite a alot
It does help migraines, even strong ones. But clear skin is something of a false. It does a little boost to the liver and kidneys and maybe even get sugar levels down, which levels down inflammation, which reduces a lot of most acne.
I personally found that drinking 3L of water a day helped me maintain rather clear skin on my face
Ok this actually helps a lot thanks
I had the exact same experience! Randomly started drinking minimum 3L a day. Most of my skin cleared out within 3 weeks ish and energy levels were somehow much higher immediately.
I drink based on my mood too! drinking water too much when im stressed
@@manasvegi4170 causation correlation
Water does help hydrate skin and helps the body clean out garbage and make cells more efficient in their processes but drinking X amount to get clear skin is more of a correlation. Your skin needs to be externally cleaned as well and there is such a thing as drinking too much water in a day.

“Cows milk, almond milk, skim milk, whole milk, fat free, which milk do you recommend we drink?”

_lactose intolerant_
I wish they mentioned soy milk. It's more nutritionally comparable to cow's milk than almond milk is.
You should be able to drink plant based milk tho? Lactose is present only in real milk.
I don't want to be that guy, but drinking milk (with less fat) develops tolerance over time. That's why continents (America, Europe and northern Asia) that had it abundant have more of that gene.
"You can drink any type of milk"
That kitten who cannot digest cow's milk:
Fun fact, kittens are not lactose intolerant otherwise they wouldn't be able to digest the milk from their mothers. They lose the ability to digest lactose as they get older. Most mammals have lactose in their milk, notable exceptions are a certain type of wallaby, whales, bears and some seals.
@@emu071981 Adding on to that, you shouldn't feed cow's milk to your cat. It's not healthy for them. Which was said earlier, but I didn't want anybody thinking your comment meant it's ok for cats to drink cow milk

same here, i asked my doctor and she said it was normal but i really don't think my blood sugar should be varying this much
I never knew that not wanting to eat was a known effect of GAD! I have had severe GAD from childhood and unless someone offered me an exceptionally rare treat, I just never wanted to eat because my stomach was always in knots and eating made me nauseous. Mealtime with the family was a huge ordeal for me (which made it hard on the whole family, leading to a lot of fighting and more anxiety). Then as a teen I was left to my own devices a lot, so I would go days without eating. Needless to say, I got extremely sick, but no one really intervened, or even thought to ask me if I was eating. I got so weak that it eventually scared me enough to propel me to start forcing myself to eat small amounts regularly. Over time it became easier and I was able to get both this and the GAD under control, but it took years of therapy, meds and consistent effort.

I was really caught off guard when people started "debunking" the health benefits of beyond/impossible, because I didn't think that was ever even the point? The point is to satisfy cravings for beef/pork without actually killing an animal. Was this unclear? Am I getting gaslighted into thinking this was marketed as a health product rather than an animal rights product? Where did that notion come from?
I don’t think they ever marketed themselves as healthy, because they’re not. I didn’t understand the whole debate/debunking either because I don’t think anyone is eating something processed for their health. But not a direct hit a Mike I assume because he was asked the question to answer.
Probably the same people who were impressed at how skinny their friends with celiac are and decided "gluten free" should be a diet fad.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's just people convincing themselves that veganism is "healthy" so they can continue to ignore the animal rights aspect without rejecting it outright. "I'm vegan for my health" is less combative than "meat is murder."
People are debunking it being health food because that's one of the biggest pushes vegans force down your throat to switch. It's "healthier for you". No. Its really not.
@@ximar0ckstrx it is healthy though it’s just a source of protein
It is healthier. There is 0 cholesterol in plant based products. Eating animal meat is extraordinarily unhealthy. It’s just so bad for you. So yes, vegan processed products are healthier than non vegan processed products. But are they healthy standing alone? No, it’s better to not eat processed food. But if you’re gonna, why would you want to hurt an animal to do it when you don’t have to? Here. We made you your garbage food that you love so much, with no animal cruelty. THANKS for confirming that probiotic foods CAN actually help you feel better during and after an antibiotic therapy. I was starting to think it was all just my imagination (placebo effect, which I'm fine with as long as it helps), but hearing from a doctor that eating my yummy bifidus yoghurt with some fresh fruit mixed into it might actually have a positive impact makes it even tastier. As for the the allergy question: I think I somehow trained my immune system to no longer overreact when confronted with cat allergenes. When I got my cat, I sneezed every single time I cleaned her litter box, and her little scratches would itch for hours. At first, I sometimes had to take antihistamines in the morning so I wouldn't have red itching eyes all day. However, over the course of the months, things got better. My theory is that through her little scratches, she brought a tiny amount of allergenes under my skin, which is similar to what they do in certain desensitization therapies. Also, I never started freaking out and trying to avoid contact with allergenes. I WANTED to get used to it, and it worked. Sometimes I tell people that I bascially just willed my body into accepting the fact that I love cats, lol.

"A specialty trained shopper will hand pick the freshest items" is not quite true. I have watched these shoppers 'hand pick the freshest items'; they grab the produce or fruit closest to their hand and dump it in their cart regardless of product date, being over or under ripe or aged. I stopped this service from Walmart because of these shoppers. I'm sure there are good shoppers, but on a whole, not so much.
During the prevaccine pandemic, and buying for my elderly parents, I would order groceries at Walmart, Shaws and Hannaford. None could be trusted to pick out greens. More than half the time, they gave me packages starting to spoil that customers had avoided. Did have one bring me Kale because she said the Spinach didn't look too good. Wish I could have arranged to have gotten her everytime! Then discovered that a local CO OP was only selling at the door. A lot more expensive, but worth it for the freshness.
