Years ago, right after Hurricane Andrew wiped out Florida City, Homestead and a large portion of Miami-Dade County, I was travelling to a new job on the west coast of Florida. I was recently retired from the military and was being transferred from my job with Loral Aerospace to one of its radar sites at a little town called Horseshoe Beach, Florida. I was on my way to scope out my new job and make arrangements for a place to live in the area. Where we lived in the Keys, we had very little damage from the storm, but repairs and reclamation was still ongoing in the Miami-Dade area. When I got to the mainland, I stopped in Florida City to get something to drink at the only store seemingly left standing - a 7-Eleven. As I got out of my car, I noticed two young men, late teens or early twenties, lounging around at the front of the store. I went inside and bought a drink and some snacks. When I came out, one of the men stood up and asked me if I had a cigarette. I replied I didn't smoke. He then looked at his friend and said I should give them some money so they could buy some cigarettes. I declined. He then pulled out a stiletto and told me to give me what was in the fanny pack I was wearing. I asked him if he was sure he wanted what was in the pack. He grinned and said that he was sure. I then asked if he wanted to share the contents with his friend. Still grinning, he said yes. Needless to say, when I opened the pack, pulled out my 9mm pistol and told them to get down on the ground, he became very apologetic and assured me he was just fooling around and wasn't serious. I assured him I WAS serious and that the two of them should lie down on their bellies. About this time, the 7-Eleven Manager stuck her head out of the door and told me that the police were on the way. A few minutes later, a Sheriff's car pulled up with two deputies. I knew the Sergeant from a joint Law Enforcement/Military exercise I had attended previously. I gave him a statement on what had gone down and he and his assistant bagged, tagged, cuffed and stuffed the two. Apparently, these two were wanted for strong arm robberies in the FEMA Trailer park down the road. I gave them my business card and told them to tell the State's Attorney to get in touch if he needed me. I have been down in the area several times on business over the years. Neither Florida City or Homestead have recovered appreciably in the years since then. Florida City, as your vlog states, is still pretty bad. It's bad enough during the day, but NOT a place to go at night.
My husband and I just spent 10 days in Louisiana. Family all over south and central LA. Spent a couple of days in Marksville. Made it out, OK. Even went to Mass on Sunday. Now you tell me.
I've been to Emoryville several times, to shop at IKEA or to catch the BART. Never had or witnessed an issue...perhaps the angels were surrounding me! Very interesting video...I think I'll avoid every place on this list! Hope you are feeling great...you sound fantastic!
I knew Florida City or Homestead would make this list. The problem with Florida City is the poverty and lack of decent jobs. The local government there is too corrupt to even acknowledge the problem and basically has been in a time warp since hurricane Andrew went through it over 30 years ago. Locals refer to FL City as a "fly by" community because most everyone going back and forth to the Keys do not stop in that town.
It doesn't really. The crime rate for Emeryville is officially high only because the city is full of visitors, and crime is measured per population without taking into account the visitors among whom most Emeryville crime actually occurs.
@@dean4125 , Emeryville looks good and doesn’t feel unsafe. Things happen there but I would not avoid it . I just took the Amtrak train from Emeryville. Emeryville has its pluses. Just don’t assume that nothing ever can happen there. It can and it does. But, chances are it won’t.
I worked in Emeryville for a couple years. They try so hard to make it look super nice but its surreal to see a violent crime occur in a fancy looking area.
Globe, AZ is not that far from a big city - 60 miles to Mesa. For many Arizonan's who have been around for a while, it has the best Mexican food available anywhere. And it's a nice pit stop before one of the most spectacular drives in the lower 48: the Salt River Canyon to Showlow.
Surprised not to see anything in Eastern NC. If you're reading this, anything inbetween Raleigh and Wilmington or OBX is "do not stop zone" A high school acquaintance of mine was murdered recently in broad daylight in this area; body dumped in a drainage lake. This country is a crazy place. Never forget that.
I grew up in the northeastern corner of NC near Elizabeth City. There is not much around but the crime is not as bad because people commute into southeast Virginia for work. You are correct that a lot of eastern NC is poverty stricken and the crime rates are high. Greenville is decent (has some rough areas), New Bern is a nice town and Jacksonville has Camp Lejeune. Places like Kinston, Rocky Mount, Tarboro, Lumberton, etc. are best avoided.
I wasn't expecting to recognize the names of any of these small towns, but we used to rent a hotel room in Florida City when diving in the Keys because the hotels in the Keys are so expensive. We didn't have any problems, but that was over 20 years ago. Maybe things weren't as bad back then.
I know Salem well. It's one of my favorite places in South Jersey, because of its history and so forth. Also, as soon as you drive outside the city limits you are out in farm country. But Salem is such a sad place. It's had a lot of bad luck with industry leaving the city. It has a very urban feel to it, but only has a little over 5000 people.
Back in the 80s, Emeryville was supposed to become a hi-tech community due to its proximity of Berkeley and San Francisco. It was once a bedroom community for San Francisco communters. Getting into the city is a very abrupt turn off the interstate.
I know exactly what you mean about Emeryville Amtrak station. Thank God I rescheduled my trip avoiding a late night arrival into Emeryville. Instead I left from that station during the morning. Still dangerous I’m sure but I felt better doing it that way. 😂😂
@@esotericsolitaire I know that. That's why I said if they were going just on crime. Camden is consistently rated as one of the most dangerous cities in the country. But, it is also fairly large for the area. So I wasn't expecting it to be on the list. I've spent time in both Camden and Salem. It's a matter of knowing where to go and where not to as well as when.
@@lanedaw811 OK. So we agree that they are one consolidated city. They have different histories and now one municipality. In any case, I simply mentioned the blues history of West Helena, a history known to us blues people and, I assume, to you. Have a good day.
Emeryville is amazingly prosperous for a high crime spot. Fancy shopping, sculptors' studios, and artisnal pizza a mile or two from some of Oakland's worst drug zones. I've spent a lot of time in Emeryville with very little sense of any danger.
Helena West Helena has the silly name because a few years back they combined the two towns in order to have better demographic numbers. Didn't seem to help much. Really a strange town to visit. You can tell that 100 years ago or so it was quite the place, grand old buildings and such. Also looks like it was booming in the 50's or so, with shopping centers and other building from that period. Now it's just incredibly depressing.
I always thought that if the place is small and all the residents know each other, the crime rate should be lower. Apparently there is no such rule. Or they all have developed some sort of cabin fever, ha!
Whew. A city in NM didn’t make the list. I moved to Albuquerque. People gripe about the crime. Lots of nice neighborhoods and nice people where I live but don’t leave your car out at night.
I drive through Emeryville regularly to go to shopping malls and big box stores. Today, I actually thought about going to the Ikea, but decided to just go home instead. Maybe that was the best decision! The most interesting thing about that city is that they still have a Wild West-style gambling club that's been there since 1896. I've heard stories about people getting murdered outside that place and the liquor store that's next to it.
Emeryville is just spillover from Oakland. Ironically, it was a sundown town back in the day. My father in law said blacks would get beat up if they went north of 580.
Residents of Florida City here. Lots of homeless people lots of meth addicts walking around. And there has a lot of missing persons that when did disappear it goes undocumented here. That being said they're building brand new developments here townhouses starting in the 350 and new homes starting in the 550s within 2 miles of the maximum security prison here.
That's only going to make it worse not better. I figured the Florida City government would learn from the mistakes over in the city of Miami for the last 20+ years.
Remember the scene in "The Blues Brothers" where the cops chased the Bluesmobile around inside the shopping mall? That was shot at Dixie Square mall, which had been abandoned for several years when the made the movie. That's Saulk Village. I grew up south of Gary, and Saulk Village was about 15 miles away. Pretty much their whole economy revolved around selling liquor at retail to Indiana residents (Indiana has high liquor taxes and fixed pricing; Illinois has lower liquor taxes and free market pricing).
Many moons ago, there was a Company called Hooker Chemical near Muskegan Heights Michigan. They were closed down by the EPA due to poor business practices. There went a whole bunch of good paying jobs and the addition of a toxic cleanup site.
Nice to hear the stats of the smaller cities. A lot of places I’ve never heard of before. Top notch quality content as always 👊🏻

Surprised either East Cleveland, OH or Rockford, IL didn’t make the cut
Rockford is a city. It's too big to be a "small town". But I'm still butthurt a chicago suburb/village is #1.
How about East St. Louis?
Are these places too high population to make this list?
My husband and I just spent 10 days in Louisiana. Family all over south and central LA. Spent a couple of days in Marksville. Made it out, OK. Even went to Mass on Sunday. Now you tell me.
At 2:48 in the video the video is of Main St in Superior AZ and not Globe AZ.
Briggs, you rock! ❤ Peace
Thank you
I've been to Emoryville several times, to shop at IKEA or to catch the BART. Never had or witnessed an issue...perhaps the angels were surrounding me! Very interesting video...I think I'll avoid every place on this list! Hope you are feeling great...you sound fantastic!
I love Emeryville
@@LisaPFMooreI'm sure there are good parts and not-so-good, just like in many cities. Never had an issue there.
Motorcycle on its side, wheel spinning but nobody around 😂
May have been stolen , crashed and ran
I live in Fly over Country, 15 miles from the closest stop light and two miles from a stop sign. I will stay right where I am. 😊
I like Emeryville I didn’t realize they had a high crime rate
It doesn't really. The crime rate for Emeryville is officially high only because the city is full of visitors, and crime is measured per population without taking into account the visitors among whom most Emeryville crime actually occurs.
ive been to emeryville a few times. because Ikea is there its the only reason I go there lol. but its not as bad as u make it sound.
Delta dirt distillery in Helena is quite the diamond in the rough. Very special story. Very wonderful family
I used to fish for walleye in Muskegon lake at night. Hearing random gunshots from the heights was common.
30 minutes! I’ll take it!! FriYay video 🎉🎉🎉🎉
8:50 the balance between comedy and actual economics is so consistent with Briggs is a talent
Nope
I worked in Emeryville for a couple years. They try so hard to make it look super nice but its surreal to see a violent crime occur in a fancy looking area.
Globe, AZ is not that far from a big city - 60 miles to Mesa. For many Arizonan's who have been around for a while, it has the best Mexican food available anywhere. And it's a nice pit stop before one of the most spectacular drives in the lower 48: the Salt River Canyon to Showlow.
If Stockton, CA. ain't on here, this list isn't valid
I thought the same thing! 🤣
The video is on small towns.
Stockton has more than 15,000 people so can't be on this list.
@@Wandau854 title says towns, not small towns

Surprised not to see anything in Eastern NC.
If you're reading this, anything inbetween Raleigh and Wilmington or OBX is "do not stop zone"
A high school acquaintance of mine was murdered recently in broad daylight in this area; body dumped in a drainage lake.
This country is a crazy place. Never forget that.
Like Whiteville.
Lumberton was scary as f last time i went through.
Granby Colorado when I lived there was only 1500 people. I was there until 2002. Marvin hemyer, my neighbor, bulldozed it June 2004
I wasn't expecting to recognize the names of any of these small towns, but we used to rent a hotel room in Florida City when diving in the Keys because the hotels in the Keys are so expensive. We didn't have any problems, but that was over 20 years ago. Maybe things weren't as bad back then.
Sauk Village, IL.
At least it's not Ford Heights, IL.!!!😮
I remember that used to be all hillbillies in Sauk Village. Damn, that place must have took a shit i gotta see
Or Robbins and Harvey.
Briggs, highly informative and relevant. Nicely current. Keep them coming.
Thanks Briggs
I know Salem well. It's one of my favorite places in South Jersey, because of its history and so forth. Also, as soon as you drive outside the city limits you are out in farm country. But Salem is such a sad place. It's had a lot of bad luck with industry leaving the city. It has a very urban feel to it, but only has a little over 5000 people.
Back in the 80s, Emeryville was supposed to become a hi-tech community due to its proximity of Berkeley and San Francisco. It was once a bedroom community for San Francisco communters. Getting into the city is a very abrupt turn off the interstate.
Anyone else shocked East St. Louis didn't make the list!?!?!?😱
East St Louis has a population of over 15,000 people that why it not on the list.
Thinks it’s a bit to large of a town to make this list. But yah, it’s the worst 😂
Weren't you listening? It's for towns of 15,000 or less
I know exactly what you mean about Emeryville Amtrak station. Thank God I rescheduled my trip avoiding a late night arrival into Emeryville. Instead I left from that station during the morning. Still dangerous I’m sure but I felt better doing it that way. 😂😂
I'm really surprised that a New Jersey city, like Nrwark, didn't make the list.
Go back and listen to the video. Number of people per town is a parameter.
If they were going just on crime, etc, Camden NJ would have probably made the list.
@@dizzysdoings not. This video addresses towns/cities under 15,000 population.
Helena is home to the King Biscuit Blues Festival. It has a long tradition as a lawless blues town.
Helena is not West Helena

@@lanedaw811 OK. So we agree that they are one consolidated city. They have different histories and now one municipality. In any case, I simply mentioned the blues history of West Helena, a history known to us blues people and, I assume, to you. Have a good day.
Emeryville is amazingly prosperous for a high crime spot. Fancy shopping, sculptors' studios, and artisnal pizza a mile or two from some of Oakland's worst drug zones. I've spent a lot of time in Emeryville with very little sense of any danger.
Gee, what a happy video.
OMG, I lived just west of Sauk Village, it was bad back in the 70’s and 80’s!
That's the story of a lot of American small towns.
I’ll take your word for it.
It was a thriving community until the mid 1970’s, then the industry’s moved out and the demise occurred.

Alternate title: "Towns Without Pity".
Too funny when you Gary ain’t no peach 😂😂😂
I always thought that if the place is small and all the residents know each other, the crime rate should be lower. Apparently there is no such rule. Or they all have developed some sort of cabin fever, ha!

I’m from Silver Lake in Providence and it’s been so grimey I had to get out before I became another statistic
Briggs was so funny 😂 salem nj should start a soft ball club to get ppl together, but they better pad their clubs with rubber😅😮
I thought for sure Humble TX was going to be in this list.
I got my NACE level 3 certification in Humble. Set me on a great career path.
Lmaoo 😂 humble ??
That was actually Harvey, IL.
When I was hanging in Emeryville early 2000s, it was hip, lots of IT folks and cafes. Most have now moved to...Portland now.
I rather live in Emeryville then portland. They had a Chicago style pizza place my dad loved.
I thought East St Louis, IL would be on here

Hey Briggs, an idea FYI for a video- poorest savest towns/cities/counties
Many moons ago, there was a Company called Hooker Chemical near Muskegan Heights Michigan. They were closed down by the EPA due to poor business practices. There went a whole bunch of good paying jobs and the addition of a toxic cleanup site.
Great video. New Sunday video this week?
I'm surprised he didn't put St. Louis on here. As someone who lives in misseroi, I have to say St. Louis can be very chaotic at times
