Excellent video young man and nice to see somebody else that enjoys cresting their arrows - they look superb and very professionally done - regards - Dale
Love the video and can't wait to get started. I learned a lot from your video and I'm rounding up parts to make the jig. Wanted to do this 40 years ago when I had a set of custom arrows made for me. I think I paid around $30 which would probably be about $150 for a dozen in todays economy. I still have the arrows but they need some TLC now.
I can't wait. I have a nice motor or two; where I'm stuck is getting some kind of chuck to attach to the shaft of the motor perfectly straight and not a bit wobbly. I was really happy to find individual Testors enamel paints available nearby, like when I was a kid. I hear better things about Krylon spray than Rustoleum, but I got a good deal on a few of the Rustoleum spray enamels that say they're the kind that's a primer and paint in one and bonds to plastic, and I got some of the clear enamel as well, maybe it would be good to give them a coat of that after 48 hours? Esp. since it's not Krylon which seems to be passing the scratch test a bit better than Rustoleum sprays.
I am looking forward to the video on how you built this. I when and found and old sewing machine to tear apart for the motor. So I can build one of these for.
I use enamel and thin it a little so it will go on smoother. Some colors need more thinning than others, you just have to play around with them to get the results you want.
grat video and tool you have made. I would like to make one for myself, can you give me tips on the type of motor dimmer you are using. Seems that there are a bunch of sewing machine motors for sale on ebay and dont really know which one would work with a dimmer. great video and great arrows! congrats. roberto
The motor is from a standard sewing machine, it does not matter as long as it's variable speed. The dimmer switch is just a plain wall light dimmer switch sold at Home Depot. Easy to make.
I took a piece of 3/8" rubber gas line and put a bronze bushing on the outside of the hose to straighten it. It is not perfect but close. The arrows are carbon and are used as is. The higher grade arrow you use the straighter they will be. I like arrows +/- .003 for cresting.
Do you have any drawings on the jig? Or a picture of the entire setup? Very good video anyway, just added another hobby to my winters, next to making chain and scalemail :)
Hi, Really interesting and useful video, I keep referring back to it time and time again! I want to crest some wooden shafts and I also want to varnish them. I had planned to crest them first then clear varnish over everything. Is this the way you would recommend or should I apply the varnish first then crest over the top? Any advice you can give me will be hugely beneficial.
Hey man what did you use to hold the nock in place? I built a cresting jig and have been using a motorcycle gas tank grommet however, it's seen better days and was never quite as stable as the one you are using. - Thanks in advance
What Testors paint did you use? Acrylic or Enamel? They seem not to be too thin (which with an art piece I had, I had that trouble with acrylics being too "watery") and dry has a really nice high gloss. I'm guessing enamal, but I'd like to know for sure. Very creative jig too. I'll b making one off of what u did. Better than $130 + at 3 Rivers Archery! (And I try to endorse them with other people's archery questions, kudos to you!)
What kind of chuck do you use to attach the arrow to the shaft of the motor? You arrows have no wobble at all. My have a slight wobble that makes the thin lines uneven. Did you use a straightner for the arrows?
Hello there. I built the jig using my mum's old sewing machine and I am able to crest my own arrows. But I am kind of having a little bit trouble with my paint. What type of paint is the best for cresting? Oil or acrylic? If I am using oil paint, should I loosen the paint down by using thinner or anything?
I have bought myself a flat bow, ordered a basic set of arrows, but going to start making my own. I have seen a few people saying they use water based polyurethane and then seal it, what would you say is the best paint to seal the wood and maybe pens or possibly small paint brushes for the cresting?
what I don't understand is why the first band is black. Shouldn't that be red? The black is the same color as the base carbon. It is superfluous to do that first black band, isn't it? Shouldn't it be red? thx!
It is simple to make, using 3/4" pine boards. A sewing machine motor controlled by a light dimmer switch for speed control. I made a "V" notched block for the end of the arrow to rest in. Last, I use a piece of 3/8" rubber hose to couple the arrow to the motor. I will try to add a how to video on making a cresting jig when bow season slows down.
Fantastic video - I would like to either learning how to make this jig or commission you for one. If you are interested please email me. Thanks for sharing!
If I voluntarily placed a paintbrush of any size in my hand my wife would immediately know it and come immediately home to immediately f*ck up my day and make me immediately paint the bathroom....do you take orders?, I will pay immediately!
I'm a compound guy but I'm glad traditional archers still keep this art alive. It gives arrows a soul. Very cool. 👍
I'm a compound guy as well and build lots of crested arrows for compound guys. Don't let that stop you.

I love the music too, makes it super peaceful to pay attention.

One of the most pleasant and relaxing videos I've had the pleasure to watch. Thank you!
Thank you, I enjoy cresting arrows for the same reason.
very informative thank you i'm just moving over to traditional archery got myself a flatbow and can't wait to spice up my arrows

Man, its great!
This is really fun to do. The cresting machine I made is similar to this one.
I am looking forward to the video on how you built this. I when and found and old sewing machine to tear apart for the motor. So I can build one of these for.
Great work. Truly a lost art!
Thank you, I enjoy doing them.
@@blevinsgapoutdoors im working on building myself a setup now!

Your machine is nice and quite.

I have to do this, thanks for the lesson.
You can use cresting paint or Testors model paint over spray paint for the white.
Fine job. Kudos sir.
Thank you!
That came out great!

Do you have any plans to make this Jig,so that I can build one please or another Vid showing how to build one as its the best I have seen on here.
Do you have any drawings on the jig? Or a picture of the entire setup?
Very good video anyway, just added another hobby to my winters, next to making chain and scalemail :)
Nice video. Thank you.
No, I spray the white area. Or you can dip them.
Very good video. How did you make the motor?
but amazing video😆

Video on making the cresting jig is ready to view.
Yes, I clean or strip off the area to be painted.
Do you have to strip the arrows before you spray the base coat on?

what does the guide with the blue color do? why doesnt it get stained with paint? isn't it touching the shaft?

I was wondering what kind of paint you use and brand and for the base coat and the brand on that to please thanks!
Did you do the white part using the same process?
Do you use special cresting paint or regular paint?

I have seen a few people saying they use water based polyurethane and then seal it, what would you say is the best paint to seal the wood and maybe pens or possibly small paint brushes for the cresting?
at the moment looking at using PoC shafts
I use nothing but enamel paint myself.
Amazon sell them which are pedal controlled - change the pedal for a dimmer
The motor is out of a sewing machine controlled by a dimmer switch.
is this possible with aluminium shafts?
what I don't understand is why the first band is black. Shouldn't that be red? The black is the same color as the base carbon. It is superfluous to do that first black band, isn't it? Shouldn't it be red?

What type of paint do you use?
Bow season is winding down so I will have more time to work on a video on making a jig.
what paint do you use

Where did you find the motor???? I know it's a sewing machine motor...give me hint to finding one
what paint?
Awesomeness
what does cresting arrows mean?
Do you just think the Testors with water?
No, if it needs to be thinned Testors has a thinner.
Thanks.....
Hi, how much RPM is it?
I installed a dimmer switch to control the speed. I run it slow!
Fantastic video - I would like to either learning how to make this jig or commission you for one. If you are interested please email me. Thanks for sharing!
i can't concentrate because of the song
