I do mention in this video Cuthbert's Diary not being about online at the time of publishing. It's taken just 9 days for it to surface! Here it is at about 7:45 in ua-cam.com/video/ud711s9u2Gk/v-deo.html
Just to let you know Jack Haywood , that Nick Ayling who work behind the scenes at Zzzap may have been wearing the tricky dicky costurne for the comic scenes where the camera is going to The Handyman panel and Smart Arty panel , but it might have been a free member of the crew, and no it was not Neil Buchanan , and the leg that you see kicking up and down outside the comic is a real leg in the first series of Zzzap as far as i know and if you watch episode 7 of series 1 , you can see the leg panel has collapsed , I spoke to Sean Appleby on here who work on the kids show Zzzap about it , and no he was not part of the filming of the comic , but he worked elsewhere in Zzzap. and he is friends with Richard Waites who play Cuthbert Lilly and Tricky Dicky . Just to update you Jack Haywood
It's funny that Cuthbert's Diary appeared so soon after your video popped up, being considered Lost Media since its one-off airing in 1997. Its also interesting that its existence technically is against the explanation you gave of the series having "no spoken words", as Richard Waites delivers a slew of spoken words, as Cuthbert, to give brief explanations of things happening in each of the days of his week.
@@CTxCB Yes that was a surprise. I find the narration odd. It would've worked without.
@@JacksThrowbackAttack It's also worth nothing that the voice that Richard Waites does for Cuthbert Lilly in Cuthbert's Diary is wildly different from the voice he provided when he took over duties of dubbing Cuthbert from Neil Buchanan in Series 10. I'd argue that the voice for him in Cuthbert's Diary is actually better, it fits the character more, whereas Series 10 Cuthbert just sounds a bit posh and snobbish, which doesn't really fit the character as well.
@@CTxCB and Richard Waites is so funny aswell , but he did appear in Timekeepers of the millennium in 1999 on CITV by the way
I used to run home from school to watch this. Absolutely loved it. I'm 34 now, we are all getting old
I recently found out that Zzzap was created with deaf children in mind which I think was really sweet.
Let's traumatize the deaf kids. As if they didn't have enough to worry about.
@@elleeme9451 personally I think it was lovely of the creators to consider it- especially as this show was on when deaf actress Rose Ayling-Ellis (strictly come dancing winner and Eastenders actress) was growing up- the same time as me.
OMG! 😱
The fact that you actually amazingly recreated the iconic visual style of the show for the whole video with the same music and sound effects thrown in too also, has to be one of the best ideas that I’ve ever seen for a celebratory look back video for one of many nostalgic tv shows that were a huge part of my childhood, you Jack my friend have outdone yourself with this one, congratulations!
😃😃😃👍👍
Many thanks! :)
No way, I loved Zzzap! I tracked down the library music Keystone Chaos the theme of Zzzap many years ago now. Loved all the music on the show in fact, all of the character themes were perfect for each character. The description of Cuthbert Lily as a "children's Mr. Bean" is absolutely spot on! lol Thanks for the video Jack, it's great to see you back in action again! 🎉:)
Thank-you for a glimpse into my childhood. i had a random thought about this and your vid popped up. Simpler times :)
My pleasure!
This is genius! Love the use of the original music and segways into the next scenes! Thanks Jack for uploading this loving tribute and 30th anniversary celebrating Zzzap! I used to love watching it, after coming home from school in the afternoons! Do you have a favourite “segment” of the show, you used to enjoying looking forward to? For me it was either Smarty Arty and Daisy Dares You that I looked forward to - more so as Daisy Dares used to be the last part of the show more often than not. For me it was great to see if the children would reign victorious over Daisy, as it didn’t happen all that often, so kept you watching to see if they would win next week! Thanks again Jack!
Thank you, I really appreciate that. I was a huge Daisy fan as a kid as I found gunge hilarious. As an adult I love the comedy of the Cuthbert sketches. Some of them were quite clever for a kids show.
@@JacksThrowbackAttack I have to agree with you there. Those two and the different puzzles
The Handymen 🔵🧤🟡 Forever. Zzzap All Together.
I love Zzzap! 32 years old and I still crack it out now and then. I have all 5 VHS releases plus videos I recorded as a kid. The show will always be part of my life.
Zzzap is my favourite programme when I was a kid can't believe it's now 30 years
That was a brilliant video Jack. It's so good to see you getting your creative juices flowing again. Another job well done 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you!
Omg that high road theme has been playing in my mind since like the late 90s THANK U for unlocking a memory bro!!
Thanks so much for uploading this video to UA-cam I love this series
Yeah I 1000% remember one of the CITV presenters saying that Cuthbert Lily would be appearing in the studio on Christmas Day, but I never saw it and can't find it.
Back again, this show will never leave me - but do you think it could ever be replicated or is it just a thing that happened & will never again.
Thanks so much for this Jack I am really loving your uploads they absolutely rock
You wanna talk about one of the greatest kids tv shows of the 90’s / early 00’s and Zzzap was one of them.
I love these old shows
One more thing involving Daisy's music, The music is called Pockets Full of Peanuts, And it was composed by Duncan Lamont who did the music for The Adventures of Spot, Yes seriously.
Duncan is also probably more known as the musician behind the Incidental Music of the 1970s BBC Children's Series, Mr Benn, which he composed under the pseudonym of Don Warren.
@@CTxCB Huh didn't know that.
Love it before Neil Buchanan left and music changed to The Handy Men.
I watch the show all the time as a kid in the late 90's and early 2000's, My favourite sketch will always be Daisy Dares You, She's the kind of person who's funny adorable and somewhat dangerous, Her debut in the second series is just as enjoyable and both Deborah McCallum 'Series 2 to Series 8' and Claire Macaulay 'Final 2 series' play the role great, I kind prefer Deborah McCallum over
Claire Macaulay but that's just me.
18:44-19:38 Amazing & Strange Hearing Deborah McCallum's Real Voice Here & I Never Would've Guess That Her Voice In Zzzap! Daisy Dares You Was Actually Done By Neil Buchanan
and deborah mccallum on take the high road was very good looking back than aswell
Yeah, Neil did an interview with Demon DM in 2009 (I believe it's still online) where he did a demonstration of Daisy's voice.
Fantastic video! Still got all my VHS’s! Loved the graphics you recreated!
One of the most interesting things of the production is, The Law Enforcement Police Bobbies.
Law & Order.
Hallo Hallo! Now then, what's going on here?!
I remember watching this with my brother after school, happy days. Looking back I don't think it was that funny or taught you much.
It's a Mystery was much better because it challenged you to think a bit. We used to watch Buffy and Star Trek TNG too because it always seemed to be on between 6 and 7.
I can tell you that episode 1 scenes with the kid in the shopping centre was filmed at was was known as Stoneburough shopping center, later named Maidstone Chequers centre. I lived in the area and its so recognisable to me
12:22 I always used to think it was the leg of a clown that got stuck through the wall (the leg seems to be wearing a big clown shoe). I wonder who in the behind the scenes portrayed the leg (a situation that I sometimes revisit whenever I think of the Wicked Witch of the East from the wizard of Oz)>
As a kid i always hoped it would go onto one of the comic panels that were never used.
Me too haha.
I always wanted them to go to one of the other windows, I was so curious about what they were.
One of the most interesting things about the show production is The Law Enforcement Policemen Bobbies.
Law & Order.
Rural, Village & Town areas.
Hallo Hallo! Now then, what's going here here?!
I personally really enjoyed the big art atta- *ahem* big pictures by arty in the first series. But I completely agree that they found his mojo with the Magic marker
17:56 This is a recent comment, Someone told me on Facebook that on S8 - S10 Sophie voices Daisy for the rest of the show, I'm not quite true whenever it's true or not.
No, you’re right, Sophie Aldred did provide the voice for ‘Daisy Dares’ following the departure of Neil Buchanan initially, a pre-recorded cry sound he did was actually reused when the character was modified by Claire Macaulay in the 1st episode of Series 9, quite weird I know, but it did actually happen!
Wow that brings back memories. I spent 8 years working on this show. Those were some crazy days...
I was looking at the end titles to zzzap to see if your name was on the end titles, and i can't find your name sadly. but what did you do in zzzap ?
@@gavinmartin5151 unfortunately not everyone got a credit as there are always to many on the crew so its normally only the heads of departments. i was in the camera department, keith hunter was the head for most of the series . i do appear occasionally when extras are needed as do most of the crew. i have short brown hair ,slim and about 22 to 30 depending on which series..
@@seanappleby3986 i see , but i want to know is , who played tricky dicky when the camera goes to smarty arty panel and the handymen panel backwards and did a person played the leg on the first series of zzzap
@@gavinmartin5151 i never did the opening sequence but nick ayling would know. he probably did it him self he was very heavily involved in the whole series..
@@seanappleby3986 it looks like i'am solveing the mystery from you their on ticky dicky, so you don't know about the leg panel ? and what it was used for
I'm also glad that the eye picture underneath Cuthbert (which has been in the same place on the comic since the very beginning) would finally be put to good use from series 8. Better late than never, that's what I say.
You really need to get Neil Buchanan on your podcast.
That would be awesome. Neil is a legend of children's telly.
I've been trying since the first series. Not as easy as it seems
@@JacksThrowbackAttack Yeah, there aren't many interviews with him.
17:21 BTW, for the Daisy Dares replacement thing, Deborah left because she was pregnant with her first child, so Claire had to step in.
I have seen this mentioned before but there seems to be no official source for this information. I've only ever seen it mentioned on youtube comments. So I was a bit wary including it in without any solid information.
I always thought the comic was flying because of the blue background.
You wanna know something funny both Richard Walties and Sarah Pickthal are the only ones to stay on the show since the show started.
Officer!
That's her there!
Miss Dasiy Dares you!
You're Nicked!
A date with Justice!
The Legendary Long Gloved Hands 🔵🧤🟡 The Handymen still The Best All Time.
I sometimes wonder if Mr Bean was the inspiration for Cuthbert. This wasn't particularly a show I watched religiously but when it was on I always watched it, some of the segments I remember more than others like Daisy and Smart Arty, I don't remember much about that Tricky Dicky character though.
With Dasiy, she gets herself into Serious Trouble with a Policemen!
Arrest her!
Magistrate's Court.
HM Prison or Police Station.
Guilty or Not guilty?
Tricky Dicky himself meets a Policeman in a market town area.
The Officer has a ginger colour beard and hair.
I wish somebody could post all the Season 1 episodes of Zzzap, as those were the best.
We've managed to get the first 7 episode its just the final 3 we need
0:35 Correct me if I'm wrong but is this a clip of Series 4 Episode 2 involving Daisy Dares You & The Space Hopper Sketch?
i remeber all tricky dicky sketchs when repeated in 1996/7
You should try to interview Richard Waites
I would love to. I've tried a few times to make contact through various means. Including recently for this video. No luck I'm afraid.
@@JacksThrowbackAttack I found out that Richard Waites himself played Spud in the Bob the Builder Live Show. If you look at his running style it looks very similar to Tricky Dicky's
Cuthbert Lilly did indeed pop into the CITV studio, only to get himself lost.
I have spoken to him online on Facebook. He said he had a ball on the show and has happy memories from it. I'm sure he would be more than happy to talk about it as he was a total gent with me. Very quiet and mild-mannered.
Here's an idea: for the next podcast episode, interview the cast of Zzzap!!
Also, is there a way I can get home media of the show in America? I would buy a DVD for Christmas
I would love nothing more but I'm afraid I've been trying since the start of the podcast, I don't want to go in to too much detail but contact has been attempted through numerous means to no avail. I guess some have retired from the limelight and want it to remain that way and that's fair enough. Never say never though.
Unfortunately it's never been released on DVD. There were 5 VHS releases in the 1990's but they're pretty hard to come by and often go for very expensive amounts on Ebay.
@@JacksThrowbackAttack Well, even if you can't get a podcast of such a scale going, at least you had Minnie the Mini Magician on the show
I think the leg was a clown doing tricks but we will never know and shame that they got rid of tricky dicky he was a great character and when Tricky Dicky is shown with cuthbert lilly at same time it's Neil Buchanan..
how did you know that ?
@@gavinmartin5151 it definitely was him
@@007beck9 you will have to show some proof on that, shame that tricky dicky did not wave to the camera when it move to the smart arty and the handyman square by the way
Does anyone know which episode of Art Attack had that big art attack version of Arty.
This episode - ua-cam.com/video/ngS_mPj3zZM/v-deo.html
I hope you can get Richard Waites to do A Podcast I'm sure you could email him I would imagine he would be up for it
I've already got someone to pass a message on
this was such a great show.
I read somewhere that Deborah McCallum was pregnant with her first child after series 8.
yes she was pregnant with her first child and because of that she step down from playing Daisy Dare at the end of series 8 , So Claire Macaulay took over the role. sadly at the time of writing . I have no idea where Deborah and Claire are upto nowadays .
Deborah has grown-up.
Having her own children.
Had the Hots for this one!! I was about 4 in early 90s when watching this!! Some great Childhood memories.. this show was one of them & after years of FORGETTING ALL ABOUT IT I had a thought about - The Handymen today but couldn't remember who or where I saw... a little searching... & Here I am.... ZZZAP!!!! 😎♥️😊
How did you do the hand when it comes through the screen?
Hired someone to do it. They cut it out frame by frame from an episode. Took a long time but was worth it.
@@JacksThrowbackAttack good job they have done ✔
@@JacksThrowbackAttack I appreciate the committment you put into your videos!
Series 5. Dasiy Dares Sketch.
Four people having ice cream on a bench on a Summer's day.
Anyone else have a mega crush on the first daisy...or just me lol
Terribly Naughty Dasiy!
She should learn how to behave herself!
Did you know that Neil Buchanan can draw a srate line free hand lol video❤
hello where would we find that background of a remote coming out of the screen and how did you do it
It's not something you can find unfortunately. It was cut out frame by frame from an episode and inserted over the footage. A friend did it for me, it's not something I have massive technical skill in doing.

Hey Jack
I was wondering whether you saw my latest UA-cam podcast that I uploaded today
Neil Buchanan - What tv show can we create to really f*ck with kids minds?
Just too put it out there as to why none of the actors really done anything after it cause well there Terible lol 😆 could you really of seen tricky dicky as bet lynches man or daisy dares in roys rolls lol
I could've seen Tricky Dicky as Bet Lynch's man, actually.
If you think they're "terrible", why did you come here, dementednun1175?
