Old Creepy Dinosaur Art

  • creepy, strange, weird, spooky and scary. Thats how i would describe these old dinosaur depictions. Some vintage Paleo Art is funny, no 2 ways about it. But its also beautiful and historic; an artistic memory of how far paleontology has come. These pieces represent our understanding of dinosaurs at the time. And sure, they look silly now... but they were once considered to be highly scientific interpretations of fossil evidence. So enjoy this short video where we make fun of and laugh at legendary Paleo Artists who are too dead to defend themselves from my cruel, disrespectful opinions.

Outdated paleoart honestly looks surreal. Some of them literally look like fantasy creatures rather than real animals. A lot of them look rather scary as well, and sometimes there's downright weird things. Then again, early paleontologists struggled to recreate dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals with what little information they had. They didn't have a lot of the technology that we have now.
My personal favorite is the one of a dryptosaurus kicking a hadrosaur in the crotch. Look it up on Google.

I would suggest looking up all of Heinrich Harder's paleoart, not just of dinosaurs but of many types of prehistoric life. Perhaps my favourite of Harder's artworks is the one which depicts two cavemen hunting a glyptodon. It has a stunningly primal quality, especially when enhanced by the raw orange sky and the dull plants around.
Harder's paintings have also been made into collectable postcards.

I’ve always been so fascinated with the evolution of paleo art. Although (mostly) inaccurate, it’s hard for me to not have a bit of fondness towards the old 1800s depictions. The art style reminds me of mythological dragons and cryptic beasts from my favorite childhood books.
In hindsight artists really didn’t have much to work with back then, so seeing even some semblance of an accurate reconstruction is kinda commendable, lol.

Outdated paleo art has that special something to it that rides the line between "slightly unnerving" and "charmingly awkward". Makes me think of the first two Carnivores games and how the atmosphere of that game is made so good due in part to hunting dinosaurs that really aren't dinosaurs on an alien planet, and all them just so happen to look like Zdeněk Burian depictions of _our_ dinosaurs.

Yeah good point. Although I'm not sure what you'd class that depiction as. Cos that was based on a completely wrong fossil with the wrong head on it. So it's not really brontosaurus or apatosaurus... or even camarasaurus. It's just wrong, lol.

Yeah sure they're bizar and supremely inaccurate, but that's part of the charm. People were still trying to figure this shit out, and knowledge was extremely limited. With no reference points, a lot of those really old depictions are highly imaginative. More fiction than fact. More monster than animal. A fascinating glimpse into the mind of yesterday's artist, who had so very little to go by. They become nightmarish, as if the paint reflects what was seen in a fever dream. A lot of those paintings even have a kind of hazy atmosphere about them, with out of focus backgrounds, layers of mist or volcanic clouds obscuring your vision. Black storms with antediluvian serpents locked in eternal battles, like Thomas Hawkins' horrible visions. Perhaps this reflects the fog of scientific confusion in which the artists lingered. A mystical air surrounds it all. You don't see that anymore. Zdenek Burian's purplish Devonian landscapes and primitive Carboniferous swamps are absolutely iconic. Zallinger's mural "The Age of Reptiles" is a one of a kind wonder. Today's realism has cast a light upon the way in which ancient worlds are conceived now. In a way, these creatures had two evolutionary histories. One in reality, and one in the human mind. To laugh at old Heinrich Harder's fossilized art is almost like laughing at the first lobe-finned fish trying to venture out of their own realm and into a completely new frontier. Without these pioneers, we wouldn't have any foundation to begin with. Besides, say what you want about Harder, but his "Mosasaurus Ichthyosaurus" even to this day stands out as a brilliantly vibrant painting that captures my imagination. I love paleoart. I can recommend some books for whoever's interested:
Paleoart Visions of the Prehistoric Past - Zoe Lescaze
    Dinosaur Art (1 & 2) - Steve White
Die Verlorenen Welten des Zdenek Burian [don't even know if there's an English version of this, but it's one of my personal favorites]
Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Life in the Triassic - Nicholas Fraser
Dinosaur Imagery, The Science of Lost Worlds and Jurassic Art - John J. Lanzendorf
Life through the Ages 2 - Mark Witton
    I could go on..

To be fair, they did with what they knew. I wouldn't even say they're inaccurate, just part of a path in acquiring knowledge.
Things like, i.e., scaly instead of feathered Dromaeosaurids in the 2010s/'20s, that would be much worse, since it just can be explained by deliberately ignoring all of the most advanced knowledge about them.

I had an old kids book about some dinosaur in the old art style of dinosaurs. I think it was in the 50’s or 60’s because it’s in American kitsch style of illustrations like dick and Jane because books. It had a surapod like the one at 2:15 but greener and a friendlier face. I wish I could remember the book and I hope I could find it so I could share it with you guys.
