it is not the strangest swing in golf. it is a swing golf like there are many and it squares perfectly well the club head at impact.I use it since 2020 and thanks to it now I am 7 hp.Wolffe use it as well and a similar version is used by Bubba Watson and Jack Nicklaus.Very steep and vertical on the backswing and then shallow ( the difficult part ) on the down swing
It's okay to obsess over it, it's quite important. Just don't obsess about making it look "proper" or similar to someone else's. Get it to work for yourself and let what everyone else says be damned.

As long as you get to and through impact good and often it doesn’t matter. How the backswing looks doesn’t matter yet people obsess over it.
