For their disastrous video which was originally named “why you’re wrong about hookless wheels” and was basically an undeclared advert for Zipp, they got such a backlash that they changed the name of the video to “the pros and cons of hookless” (or something like that) and in the process, they lost a lot of trust from their viewers. This isn’t going to help with the perception that, when money talks, morals walk.

A patent does not mean companies can't copy it. It only gives you a chair in the courtroom.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. While there are similarities in the systems there are also some distinct differences. In the Elite version one of the ratchet rings is fixed while in the other system all the ratchet parts are floating. The Elite version also uses a system similar to what Chris king has to pull the ratchet rings together under torque.

In China...Patents are not really a thing that they pay attention to. So this could indeed be infringement but hard to prove. Hopefully they are able to license it from the other company if they are in for it.

They absolutely do. They have a complete industry around copying European and US patents. When they have the Chinese patent they have all the power to challenge European/US companies, because they have the other half, that is 2bn people, of the market in their pocket.

Patent pending gives zero legal rights to attempt to exclude someone from making, using or selling something you claim in the patent. A pending patent, at least in the US, gives zero legal standing to sue someone.

I think the issue here it, even if it’s patented, does it truly matter?
Most buyers buying this wheel, wouldn’t even bother buying from qvist anyway. Qvist wouldn’t gain a single sale from pushing this.
And paying to license it, would only drive up the cost of the wheel. Would the customer base would buy elite wheel, continue buying it if it went up past a certain point? No. So it makes 0 sense to license it

After riding on a dtswiss ratchet system, not one time have I thought "a complete hub re-design would do these wheels much better." Even Elite's regular Drive hubs are awesome. My friend got some helix in and on the first descent the hub began to seize because of the weird spring interfacing with the double ratchets. We also noticed that the double ratchet slows you waaaaayyy down and quickly. I ride elite drive 40D and I wouldnt trade them for anything. They're incredible. I think elite tried to inovate to much, too quickly.

True. But companies need to come up with stuff to advertise even though it may be a total gimmick. As long there is something to publish on the website, social media, and talked about, it is an accomplishment for the companies. Otherwise, you keep cooking the same food. Wavey Helix wheels is another example to this. I don't believe them, but they are cool and eye-catching.
