First off, big shout out to my friend for helping me shoot and edit the video, The camera work and editing was amazing!! So thank you to him again. Next big thank you to Favero for providing me with the pedals for these tests, I want to do more tests like these in the future maybe with longer distances, more power, different bikes to compare too. But honestly I just had a lot of fun filming this..... if you enjoyed the video please let me know of what you think of it and leaver a LIKE and a COMMENT
🔥
kudos to your friend bro! the editing looks dopeee
Wow man this was outstanding! Your friend is an absolute pro - serious talent. Looking forward to seeing guys collaborate more in the future. That said... and maybe I'm the only one who feels this way... I'm hoping you don't walk away completely from your established style. UA-cam is crowded with slick videos. You have developed a unique voice - honest, humorous, straightforward - a refreshing authenticity that I think stands out from a lot of the content out there. I don't doubt you will remain that way, even as your production value increases, just that it might be more difficult for new viewers to discern. Ride on!
Dude this editing was 🔥🔥🔥
I´m only interested on the content but its always very nice to watch this level of quality! Thank you again!
Speed generally scales to the square root of power (that is, the equations for power have a v^2 term in there). That 4% increase in power output between the two tests (185/178 = 1.039...) would suggest a 2% increase in speed (sqrt(185/178) = 1.019...) ... meaning that if you went 19.9mph at 178W, you should be able to go 20.3mph (19.9 * 1.019...) at 185W, even on the stock wheels. This would suggest that the deep-dish wheels only made a tiny difference at these speeds. :-(
It's the cube root, not square.
@@the318pop isn't power square but aero cube?
@@krisgoose power for what? The power required to overcome aerodynamic drag is proportional to the cube of the speed.
@@the318pop You're right. Apologies, Sir 🙂
@@the318pop Ah, thanks. I thought I was missing something, but wasn't sure where the issue was.
Production looks amazing - really nice effort!
But +7w and +0.5mph doesn’t seem to support the theory that they are much faster, does it?
aero wheels doesnt matter that much at 20 mph but they do feel faster.
tire pressure is usually more important
also at 25-30 mph aero and tire pressure combined can make a significant diff
That is what thought as well. My average ride is 30 mile (50km) ride at 15mph (25kph) average. I think I should be better off with shallow carbon wheels for their lightness and comfort.
@@mikew9743 they feel faster, because you hear this hu-hu sound 😉, but they aren't faster at my usual avg. speed of 25-30 kmh, btw I'm riding only hilly roads, 7km of flat road is unimaginable for me.
the carbon wheels are actually slower. first ride is 178 W average, second ride is 185 W. So the power input had increased by 3.9%. The speed went from 19,9 to 20.4 miles/hr, which is a 2,5% increase in speed.
@@eagerbob pwr increase exponentially as speed increases
This is the best video that you have done. It has a very high production quality and the drone shots are epic. The kit rocks as well. Kudos to you!
However, the test is done badly... if you want to hit 180W over a longer period, I cant get my head around how you'd miss it by 5 watts... 🤨🤪
You did your best to do this test the right way - same body position, same tires, tubes (pressure wasn't mentioned, but seems likely), and posted the wattage difference. That wattage difference accounted for about .2 mph, but that's understandable since it is difficult to hold a steady wattage like that. I've seen most of the bigger channels do this type of test with too many other variables, such as different tires or very windy conditions, which is pointless. Great video!
When you factor in the 7 watt difference between the two rides the speed is almost identical. That and we don't know how old the aluminum wheels were or how recently the bearings had been serviced. If he bent his elbows while on the Aluminum wheels he would have gone significantly faster simply by reducing the drag on his frontal load.
aluminum wheels are brand new take offs, of the orginal bike, also I tried my best holding my arms as similar as possible
@@GCPerformance18 I thought you did a fantastic job in holding a similar profile. The point I was trying to make (arguably poorly) is that if someone were to bend their arms ever so slightly, the reduction in aero drag would be more significant than what we saw from the wheels in your video, which, when you do the math based on the 7 watt delta was negligible at best and zero at worst. Coupled with the fact the aero wheels would be far less pleasant in cross winds it's hardly a sell. In light of this, I think it would be very interesting to do the same test at 220-240 watts (Still very achievable for a cyclist dropping 2k on wheels). I suspect we'd see a significant difference at that point. Making the wheels a far more attractive purchase. Great channel nevertheless, you're great in front of a camera.
@@aussiefreediver 7 watts might account for maybe 25% of the speed increase. Buy the wheels then bend your elbows, you're still ahead ;-)
@@the318pop I don't think I communicated it clearly. He averaged 7 extra watts with the aero wheels. When you adjust his time to factor in the extra power, the wheels were no faster than the aluminium ones.
@@aussiefreediver 7 watts will not equate to 0.5mph at around 20mph, closer to 0.2. Regardless it's an n=1 experiment. The statement that faster wheels make it difficult to control how hard he pushes the pedals is a little odd too.
So shallow aluminium is faster than deep carbon. Good to know. 👍🏽
I shoot and edit sports for a living. Tell your friend he killed it. Nice work with the sound as it’s a pain in the ass for cycling. Broll was clean and the drone stuff cut nicely.
appreciate the effort you put into this production man
Fax, This was a completely unexpected vid from him.
Looking forward to lots more vids like this - your best ever!
Highly encourage you to make more like this - more interesting that the usual overview of a stationary bike - thanks for your efforts here!!
Dude upped his game. Drone. SLO MO transitions. Great job!!
Great production quality!! Cool to see a test at a more amateur kind of speed
Awesome video. My wheels are 50mm deep which works perfectly for me in California where we have to climb. Maintaining speed on flat-ish terrain is much easier than with the stock wheels. I have the exact same bike with Hunt 50’s.
Great video & production quality, love seeing you out and about on your bike !
Thanks so much!! I had so much fun shooting this video and I want to do more like this, just need to figure out time with the film maker
0.2 mph increase for $1500! That sounds great👍
Value
Those wheels don't cost that much
That’s only if you are on the front of a group. In reality, zero difference in a race.
Great video, they keep getting better and better!!
Amazing video bro keep up the great content, these just keep getting better and better. 🔥
Daaaaaang this dude GC Performance is out here looking like a whole snack!
This is the best vid you've posted so far!!! Good job!
Not used of watching you with fully geared 😀 But this is a good addition to your vlog, this way it gives us more idea when it comes to product reviews. 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks so much!!! I have been riding since I was kid, on and off, the cycling bug comes and goes just hard ot find time to ride right now and also to have someone to film me too lol
When I switched from my 38mm alloy gravel bike to an SL7 I was pretty disappointed to only find 1kph over 25km 🤣. Upgrades are pure looks and vanity for your everyday rider.
Exactly. These bike shops are bs’ing potential consumers who thinks all the latest gadget will make em faster when they overweight or fat themselves. Go spend it on structured training, proper nutrition and resistance training for that 1300 placebo effect 🤷♂️😂
I resubscribed…..best video you have made in a while…..real world content, not for dentists and attorneys.
Great vid and footage excellent quality.. seemed very professional awesome work 🚴🤩👍
Dude this video was so pro.
Excellently done, Gary Caster (GC)!
Well done as always. Straightforward simple test - just the basics in the real world. Great Kit !!!
Thank you very much!!! I really do appreciate that
“all in the name of…. science” hahaha great video GC! the production and point of the video answers a lot of questions for a lot of viewers! the drone shots are sick as well! keep up the great work!
Not just a great mechanic and bike wiz but a good rider too, the flow of your foot is natural. If you can increase your core muscles your position will automatically become more aero. Great content buddy, thanks for what you do. Cheers
While I don't miss the cars, traffic lights, or lack of hills, this video does make me miss just how smooth those roads are compared to so many other places.
PS - This is your best video production by far.
love the new video format gc!! shout out from Indonesia
Thanks for making us in the UK 🇬🇧 envious of your Florida weather.
Love your vids and great to see you getting out and doing some real world testing.
Changed my 35 mm fulcrum racing 400 to 55mm strada pad carbon wheels. The weight is a factor also,a lot of rotational weight in the alloy rims takes more effort to get them going.
Keep up the good work 👍🚴👍🚴
Rotational weight is a bit a of myth mate. ua-cam.com/video/0QDnUkUaQfk/v-deo.html
Loved your drone shots of A1A. I think I know every pebble on that road. Keep up the quality work!
Power saddle nearly fully forward, seattube angle 73.5-74 degrees, not sure of your exact frame size, but what I am sure of, is my hands were numb aswell under such setup...
Good work, its not easy to make these videos but you have made all efforts to show the difference between carbon and alloy wheels. This has given good insights for me to look and upgrade carbon wheels. Thanks Again!
Thank you very much!I am glad you enjoyed it
Nice video. I do agree that the 7 more watts on the carbon wheels may explain the difference in speed. Now, what do you think of testing mid range deep section wheels (for those of us not ready to spend a huge % of the bike in wheels yet)
Nice video Shots.Keep it coming 👍
Great video!! You've turned a corner on content quality... thank you!!
Great video man… keep the content coming
Nice I’ve been waiting for this review
Awesome video brother, I completely agree with you, deep dish wheels are the best, I just put on 50 inch Bontrager wheels on my Domane and I can totally feel the difference, I also love GC performance kit, it looks awesome, very well done video, keep up the awesome job
Brilliant video Grant.....cheap speed and i love that kit!!!
Nice video. You are getting better and better… Loved the drones scenes.
Thank you, the filming was done by a really good friend that does amazing work
It shouldn’t be easier to sustain the power because of the wheels. 180w in is 180w in and that should feel the same. I would guess it’s more to do with you being warmed up after the first run. Appreciate swapping the wheels over took time.
It’s a shame you don’t have any hills in Florida!
We have hills, look at Sugarloaf Mountain Florida )
Wow GC with the production quality haha. Good vid
And this test was just at 180W imagine the boost at training loads! Great take and apart from the content... nice quality video GC Performance! Thank you and great work!
yea I think if I go ahead and ocme back to this test at 225 or 250 it would for sure shine more
Really upping the production/editing levels!
I had a lot fo help from a friend but the video came out so nice
That dtswiss 350/370 hub w 54 ratchet engagement will also push you versus the 3pawl system in most stock wheels..lol
Mah mannnnnn! Quality outside the premises of GC PERFORMANCE
Dude the production quality!!!!!!!!!! NOICE!
Wow!!! Thanks! It’s nice to see how this affects most of us who aren’t pros or amateurs “who are kinda like pros”. Excellent video!!!! So the question for me is if .5mph is worth it. I’m leaning towards yes since I’m still aiming for the sub 5 triathlon and I’m getting older. That difference is a huge gain for 56 miles.
For sure go with deep wheels, worth every dollar. 65 not less.
Great Production Guys! Nice work
Great video man, everything about it was perfect 👍 you have me checking out wheels now 😩
hahahhah, honestly it is worth it, if you ride a lot and are looking to get a boost right away
@@GCPerformance18 As you would know there is a stack of different sizes, 45-50-55, how do you know what size to get if you haven’t experienced them before ?
Great video, Thanks!
Really don't think you should have hand numbness and butt issues in that short a distance. I know you said you weren't moving position, but still.
Yeah. That shouldn't happen. I noticed you were dragging your heels on the down stroke. It's definitely a fit issue.
Could be a hand and/or wrist position issue
To me, it all comes down to how I feel on the bike. A good pair of lightweight carbon wheels, carbon handlebars and carbon seatpost are a must on my bike. I enjoy riding and I can feel the difference. Is it faster? I don't care. I just like it.
makes sense and seems like u ghave it figured it out and that is the best part, all that matters is that cycling is helping you in the way you want it too, as long as you are getting what u desire from the sport and it is helping you thats all that matters
Placebo is real ma man 😊
This is a really genuine answer I can fully stand for. Why do we ride our road bike? cause its fun, so our purchases should reflect that.
Great video. Great job performing the test as well. Maybe we can get a part 2 at 22mph...
I heard that below around 22 mph there is no difference between basic and deep wheel so this video give a proof. The video will have much more value if you can do either maintain 25 mph and see wattage differences (since your route is flat and no wind), or do a 300W for 10 km and see what is the time and speed differences...
Dope video bro. Nice demo!
Appreciate it!!! I love it
A great video, very nicely done! You just helped me stop thinking of biting the bullet and buying carbon wheels - the gain is *at best* marginal, especially because you put more power down.
An honest video, with a correct result I think.
Using a cycling wattage calculator we can see that if you go 19.9mph at 178w that means you should go 20.2 at 185w. So you got 0.2mph free speed around 20mph or 1%. This is actually expected, and many people (myself included) find similar results when testing deep wheels at these speeds and wattages. I know, there are a couple of outliers on youtube, that report waaay higher gains, but these had a clear incentive to push these wheels and I dont trust their results at all.
Main take away from this is that you should ride the wheels you like. Buy what makes you happy, because that is why you ride your road bike anyway. I think deep carbon wheels will make you happy ;)
An other thing to note is that you rarely see 60mm deep wheels anymore in the pro peleton, even on flat races most riders seem to prefer a more medium or even shallow depth. It doesn't slow them down much.
Thanks so much!!! I honestly appreciate the feedback
Came here to say this. Speed gains fairly linear with applied power increase: ~3% increase in power output = ~3% increase in average speed. That being said, probably a lot more comfortable, and definitely look a lot better!
Great video.. moving forward 👏👏
pog production quality absolut the best video youve put out
dang bro you're improving, and you look sharppp.
An interesting experiment, though understandably not all variables controllable. According to online power calculators - riding with the alloy wheels at 184W would have given a result of 20.2mph. Hence the carbon aero wheels increased the speed by just 0.2 mph.
I think if the wattage was higher I could have the wheels shine better, not gonna lie. I felt it very hard to control the pedal stroke with those wheels on such a flat surface. They wanted to go, so that’s why it was 185 I wanted to keep it a normal number for all of us to relate too but I think it needs to be a higher number of watts. Where as with the stock alloy wheels I felt like I was working the whole 7 miles to stay around 180 watts. Also for reference. He motor paced me the whole way back behind a scooter and I was doing 23-24 behind him only doing 130-140 watts. The wheels at thag depth shine at higher speeds
@@GCPerformance18 thanks for the reply, appreciated ... sorry, no criticism of you or your work intended ~ all good stuff. I believe that you're right though, aero advantages are more significant at higher road speeds. I'm 65 and a lower power rider, my average power over 7 miles would be about the 180W that you chose, so you've given me a good indication of what carbon aero wheels might reward me with if I decide to go down that path. I'm going to have to balance any potential speed advantage with the stability I get from my lower profile campag Zondas though ~ it gets quite windy here due to sea breezes.
Bro this is some different content! Nice work...!
On the numbness...is that a bike fit thing?
Sheeessshhhh the quality of your vids are leveling up
Great comparison here
The quality of the video is soooo good!
Does the beard catch bugs when you're riding?🤣
Awesome video! Great job
Thanks my friend
What a dream bike! Thanks for this test - channels like gcn do these test BUT they often change tires with the wheels which is destroying the results. Really appreciate your video here 👍🏻 what kind of helmet are you using in the video?
Ah and by the way - video, edit and shots are of such a high level really enjoyed watching!
This one is stunning and luxury, thumbs up with thanks !!
Interesting, i would say that the difference of watts and speed would be due to uncontrollable variables and at those low speeds you don't get any advantage from carbon deepdish.
Changing up the videos I see 🔥🔥
More of these types of videos, pretty please!
Yeah the DTswiss 470s come on most road bikes..i see you stepped it up..great video, great quality..great music
Some of the biggest gains are body position / fit, aero helmet, kit, tire setup (low rolling resistance, proper psi, tubeless or latex tubes) and honest hard work to get faster. People want an easy answer and aero wheels are bling and look cool so nothing wrong with getting them but the aero gains here aren't a major factor unless you are racing and pushing really fast speeds. Also if you fit a tire size larger than is optimal for your aero wheels then you have unknowingly nerfed any real aero benefit.
Nice video. I did a loop from Hollywood to Delray on the same route on Saturday. Nice ride except for the dude that sat on my wheel from the north end of Boca all the way to the turn off to your shop. Dragged him 10+ miles.
A couple of snot rockets usually neutralizes that type of situation with the “sorry man didn’t see you” lol
Yeah, once you get North of Spanish Blvd there are some great stretches without traffic lights up to West Palm.
Flick your elbow. If he won't pull through attack him. If you can't drop him just slow down enough to force him to pull through
My guy, let me tell you. This Video was phenomenal, I think i speak for a lot of people that this was really enjoyable to watch. Amazing effort dude!
+ you look dang professional on that bike jeez 👌
This comment was amazing and made my day I love hearing this, I hope to make more videos that you enjoy in the future ")
hahahha thank you!!
Very different gc performance video. I like it
I am happy, I got os much god feedback form this and i loved this type of content
Production value through the roof!
fire video dude!
Great video, but I also like your other raw and comedic presentation in some other videos, where you are talking to an editor. Great Job bud!! Keep it coming!!!
This is a good video, good job.
Nice video bro thank you
Btw this video looked so professional!
Great vid bro!
Do a with beard and without beard test
Hahahahaha what a test that would be
The video production of this was a huge step up
Awesome video bud. Very informative. I'm in market for an aero bike and or wheels.
I hope you find it!! I got some in stock send me an email if you want
Thanks for making my mind up, and saving me cash - I'm aiming for comfort & lightness with my wheel purchase.
Live in Scotland, so my rides average at 100ft of elevation per mile.
Nice video getting better everyday lol
Great video! Very interesting!
thanks so much!! I appreicate the support
I expected Florida to be windier. Good video 👍
got super lucky with the wind that day it was like dead flat
Very informative
dude this video is so nice lets goo grant
Carbon vs aluminium:
Watts/mph:
Carbon: 185/21.4 = 8.6 W per mph
Stock. : 180/19.9 = 9.0 W per mph
There is a small difference. Perhaps the biggest difference is the psychomotoric feedback - it was easier for you to put your force into the carbon wheels - this is interesting to discuss. I’m guessing the carbon has an advantage at higher speeds due to aerodynamics and can accelerate faster due to (presumably) lower inertia
I just rode A1A on Friday from Boynton Beach to Boca. Great place to ride.
Love the video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Deep dish are great until you ride in the Irish wind. Your test kinda suggest that those deep dish are slower.. 9 watts more for 0.5Mph..
We need more vids like this
Well done. I concur with your results. Carbon superior to alloy for all the well known reasons but noisier and tricky in cross winds.
