The fun game with the Model 3 is finding one that has the B-pillar trim still attached to the B-pillar. They use an amazingly complex set of plastic mouldings but unlike Toyota's simple system - fails to stay put.
A few things you might want to consider before you just think of $$$$ signs and getting a cheap Model 3 - or any damaged car. 1: Buying a car that an insurance company has decided is too expensive to fix is a precarious proposition for even a competent mechanic. 2: Replacing a $1:80 bumper clip is simple. Finding out that you have to replace wiring looms, AC lines and components, even one of those overly-complicated door handles...that is for a professional mechanic. 3: Tools tools tools. I cannot stress enough that if you are going to work on your own "cheap" Tesla, you are going to need many specialist tools. More $$$$$ 4: We have not even spoken about the riskiest part yet - the body of the car. Doors that don't align anymore, creases in the roof, front panel gaps that are different all point to a vehicle that requires valuable time on a rack. A tin of Bondo is not going to fix any of these problems. This legitimate gentleman claimed that he bought a $55K car for $25K - which sounds impressive. The truth, however, is slightly different. It was $55K once. A quick search and you can find an identical spec car undamaged for $46K. He also has a car with substantial accident history, a badly-repaired rear fender, so how many people who look at it if he tried to sell it for more than he spent? Which you know he would. I am not saying that you can't get a cheaper Tesla with cosmetic damage. As I said at the start though, unless you are a professional, cosmetic damage is all that you should buy. Otherwise, you may end up spending $5K less on a car that you could have purchased undamaged. Written by a fully-qualified Commercial Aircraft Maintenance Engineer and self-confessed car lover.

@@timsmith854 1) I was able to view the car and inspect it before I bought it. First thing I look at are the body lines all around the vehicle and this particular vehicle all the parts that were damaged were taken off so I could really view what was going on. I actual own 5 cars now that I repaired, the trick is finding the right car with the right damage, If you have ever done this you would know how they wright these estimates up. Most people don't want the car back especially when its a late model and 3800 miles. You have to know what to look for on the car and the insurance report, in this case the battery was a big component of the estimate ($15000) and it had a few scratches on it so they still have to wright in a battery. 2) Its funny you mention ac lines because I did have to replace them. Also your comment on hours of time on the frame machine, have you ever used one? Have you ever paid someone that has worked on a frame machine? I have done both. I actually know the costs of frame work. I did put it on the rack and there was no work needed but if there was on a typical hit like this you're talking about $600.00. As far as " badly repaired fender " One there isn't a tin of bondo, I worked that area for about 4 hour getting the dents out before applying minimal filler, its not finished yet I just put it in primer for the inspection and its not badly repaired i have another couple of hours to get ready for paint but you can pay someone to hang a new quarter for $900 part cost and another $1000 to paint. And as far as my situation I do 50000 miles a year I will drive this thing to the end, I have a passion for working on vehicles and have no interest or plans of selling this car or having people speak for me as far as what im going to do and how much im going to sell it for. So he gets Free Supercharging now since the majority of all Pre-Refresh Tesla’s had this perk and he now receives OTA updates. He interviewed the guy who does this swap and much more. What would you have done if you couldn't have gotten in contact with the previous owner? Is there another way you could've solved the key issue? Could Tesla have reset it on their end?
So the premise of the video is that if you want to build a cheap model 3 you repair it with parts from tesla? I thought tesla didnt do individual parts sale?
They softened on this stance about 9 months ago when the repair backlog got really really bad. Essentially they will sell you parts for anything they deem as non-safety essential. So anything with the electrical system or probably drive motors and the like they can refuse to sell. Trim pieces and fenders and such don't fall in that category though some parts like bumper supports can. Rich did a video covering that several months ago. Seems to vary by location some as well
@@zerodos_02 also to they don't sell structual componants, such as quarter panels. I've bought steering racks, axels, and pretty much most everything else. Now you can become certified to work on tesla's but its a process and you need to be a shop. they have no restrictions on ordering
Too hard to keep a white interior clean though. But all told, $26K is nice. Still way out of my league but good for him. And I'm sure it was a fun project and learning experience. I'd be borrowing all kinds of money still to pull it off.
So Tesla just sold him the parts he needed? I thought they didn't support wrecked/totaled cars. Same thing for switching over the account to pay for supercharging and updates. Did he get lucky or did things change?

So happy you put the cost at end. That’s amazing!!
"I have a black S" had to take 2. It would have been right either way.
yeah i thought he said "I have a black ass"
I don’t get how these guys have the knowledge to fix these cars. I can’t imagine trying to do this myself.
Why is it that a battery will only charge to 80 miles? It's been sitting for a while and it's a model 3
I'm handy... but not this handy. I need one that is wrecked but just needs a new 1-2 parts swapped out. I'd pay $25k for this but I'd never would have been able to finish it myself. Good rebuild though. Super interesting.
Cool down to earth guy. Great ending.
Did Tesla allow him to add it to his account and get app access despite a salvage title?
Must have, otherwise you're just supercharging on somebody else's account / bill
He sent his MCU to a guy that retro fits the CPU with one from a non salvaged Tesla. So he gets Free Supercharging now since the majority of all Pre-Refresh Tesla’s had this perk and he now receives OTA updates. He interviewed the guy who does this swap and much more. Look for his video with “Hacker” in the title
Yup. And it supercharge. Total stress relief when it did.

Uncle Rich back at it buying the cheapest Tesla
my favorite channel HANDS DOWN
WHO TOLD YOU TO PUT YOUR HANDS DOWN! UP WHERE I CAN SEE EM!
What no gum chewing? My pm3 is named Oreo as well. The pm3 were offered free unlimited supercharging as a end of quarter incentive. I got it on my double stuff.
I live in Eastern CT and would love a model 3. Maybe in the future I will be able to afford one.
So Sean Penn does you tube...🤨
that is his brother, I know they look similar, but there are differences
It's like Penn and DeNiro had a baby.
@@willdarling1 Who fell in love with that white powder.
Maaaan even tho your videos are long but i find myself watching till the end
So cool that you got Billy Baldwin on the channel. Was wondering what he was up to.
Does Tesla blacklist salvaged or totaled vehicles?? specifically for charging! And to remove the vehicles from the list their is a high fee???????
Uncle Rich!! It's a piece of what?!? Talking about the BMW I3...you said it was a piece of.... That's my car and I love it! Don't be coming for the I3.
Hey RICH! I just found your channel last week. Love the content keep making great videos bruh.
Are you going to start buying salvaged Tesla's, fixing them up, and selling them? I would definitely be interested
What i learnt from this video is that I need to become one of Rich's friends!! Also, I see a load of Teslas on iaa that have been messed with to make then look better than they are.
Body repairs are not to make it like it rolled off the assembly line. It is to return it to pre accident condition.
True, but for the battery pack that means factory condition, since it just gets replaced.
Could you just flatbed it to the supercharger before repairing to make sure it super charges?
Maybe I should start selling Tesla parts on ebay
Please do, the rest of the world (like me) needs it!
17:52 - "I had a black ass, I have a black ass" lol. Don't believe me then turn on the captions.

*Guy looks towards Rich/Camera*
Rich: "Damn youre ugly"
I really enjoy your show & l am referring everyone to watch your video
Lately Ebay is the land of price gouging. There are fewer and fewer good deals there for anything.
Wow, "fewer"? That's a word I rarely see used in a sentence anymore if at all.
If you were really bothered, could the battery undertray be plastic welded?
that guys hair is epic. I'm jealous
You know you’re getting old when you get psyched about someone responding on a spreadsheet colour coded
This is awesome, congrats to your friend! I luv this kind of stuff!
Hey Rich I see your buddy Mark has a Northern Ireland Football Team jacket. Tell him greetings from Northern Ireland and hope he enjoys his bargain Tesla.
Hey Peter Greeting's to you as well. Love Northern Island. We go every year to port Stewart, Port rush, Coleraine and stay at University of Ulster. My boys play in the Milk cup (now the super cup) and also the foyle cup. We love it there, and the green and white army as well. Sweet Caroline!
Awesome, small world. I live in Bangor. Hope to pick up a a Tesla or similar EV someday.
What would you have done if you couldn't have gotten in contact with the previous owner? Is there another way you could've solved the key issue? Could Tesla have reset it on their end?
Is contacting the previous owner only way to register a tesla key?
Sweet shot of the white Model 3 on Route-101.
Wicked video! Really enticing to fix up a wrecked Tesla...
Is this car considered a salvage title vehicle and what are the options for insurance. Thank you!
I din't get the part @21:40 dont supercharge your car out of the box ? It uses ac system ? can someone explain ( i'm not an english native speaker )
Do you recommend doing this now that they don't offer super charging on salvaged cars?
I have been starting a project to put a tesla in my old 1990's jeep YJ
eBay sellers have fees to pay and shipping costs so don’t be surprised for high prices.
That was a good one! - even without the flute.
True, I miss that awesome flute too. : ))
Would storm damage model 3 be a good idea. Mainly all top glass gone some dimples and dents in the body and a cracked rear plastic portion of the screen.
Who's credit card is getting charged for the model 3 charge?? lol
Exactly my thoughts, until it was mentioned near end at 22:00.
