It’s not expensive to fix the body because it’s an EV. It’s expensive because it’s a low volume car with everything that goes with that. Same like if you needed repair on any low volume car. Look up body repair on the most recent NSX and compare that to any other Acura. The official recommendation is to ship your NSX back to Ohio for repair work.

Hi Rich, long-time viewer. So that truck is an American-made v w. And it came with a naturally-aspirated diesel and like me somebody put in a 1.9 l turbo diesel. They are great engines with taking care of and actually are pretty quick in the realm of diesel-powered vehicles. They never came with disc brakes on the rear and probably the issue you might have on the brakes is finding the right Master brake cylinder. I did one in a Jetta and ended up using a 90s model or late 80s GTI. The air filter is super hard to get and you have to get it out of a Jetta or go with something aftermarket. They exhaust manifold, well who knows what they did there it went out the back and down through the bottom with a flex hose or a exhaust pipe Bell fitting with spring clamps. Yes the little Volkswagen diesel has a pretty good resale probably still on that Turbo. And those reww they call them caddies have a following out there too specially in areas were then out all rusted to pieces. There's a guy up close by you by the name of Smythe performance I think who makes conversions for all the different Volkswagen cars into little trucks plus many other American sedans into pickup trucks. They Supply a complete bed kit to turn a golf and later models into a pickup truck. He might be helpful to you on the repair of that bed and any modifying or doing. Seems like a really nice guy and has a Facebook Channel. I hope that helps you Bose parts for the shifter and all of that are way cheaper and available out of San Diego at it by a place called metric man don't know if they're still there.
Way back in the '70s, the insurance companies got good and torqued off at the auto manufacturers for the cars suffering so much damage in light collisions, and thus begat the 5mph bumpers in 1973. And the repair bills weren't 37K either. I wonder if history will repeat itself.
I had a one-year-old 'Vette in 1975 with zero deductibles for only $450 per year, rubber bumpers front and rear. Included a 50% surcharge for the fiberglass. To me it was a bargain. I was paying $250 per year for a '70 Sedan de Ville, same coverage.
My local Rivian approved repair shop in Annapolis has five Amazon Rivian vans that have sat on their lot for about five months now. Most of them seem to have busted tail light assemblies. Amazon delivery drivers are definitely known for their driving prowess, gotta be some salvage vans on the market by now
Lol not to be salty, but I have 45k miles (on routes that vary from 50 to 150 miles) length and 3500 hours driving an Amazon van. Never had an incident. Interestingly your acceleration, cornering, braking, speed, and seatbelt compliance are monitored. Plus there is an AI camera that monitors your eyes on the road, following distanced, complete stops at stop signs, and can read speed limit signs. If the camera sees a red light - even if you entered the intersection on yellow that is an infraction. All this is tied to your bonus which at my company constitutes about 1/6 of my paycheck. Besides all the hours on the road, the monitoring I believe has improved my driving. So yes, I see incidents multiple times a week with other drivers from my company, but I’d say the long time drivers, are likely quite good drivers, very likely “better” than an average driver who only commutes to work and who’s paycheck isn’t tied to their every moment driving.
My first watercooled car was a Westmoreland '80 Rabbit four door diesel. I traded a Casio keyboard for it. The car had 250k miles on its original drivetrain. I had previously driven only aircooled VWs, but this car was ridiculously reliable and got a consistent 40mpg. The Westmoreland cars had garbage interiors, but they carried on the inherent reliability of the Mk1 chassis.
I genuinely LOLed when in the middle of you talking, you had to slap the glovebox many times for it to close. That reminded me of the meme of people fighting their scooter seats.
My wife’s first car…..slowest car we ever owned…..use to turn off the ac at stop lights and going up hills….you learn to use the auxiliary radiator under the dash.
The Ridgeline bed isn't really a separate part. That seam is just cosmetic. It's still unibody all the way back. Repairing one would probably be about like repairing a Rivian except the parts are probably cheaper.
I was going to comment on the same thing. However I just got rear ended in my Ridgeline and it was repaired no problems had it back in less than a week. I don’t think it’s a unibody issue just an expensive Rivian issue.

You mentioned that the Rabbit Pickup Truck was built in Philadelphia. I asked my dad, who worked at Volkswagen of America when these were made, and he said the Rabbit Pickup was assembled in Westmoreland, PA and that the body panels and rear axle were made at the stamping plant in Charleston, WV. I was a little kid at the time, so I don't remember that well, but I do remember going to work with my dad and seeing a rabbit pickup in the parking lot. I went to grade school in Greensburg when my dad worked in Westmoreland, which is about an hour SE of Pittsburgh, which is on the other side of the state from Philadelphia. Just sayin'. :)
I have never seen one of these trucks! Omg I want one! Lol. I’m currently restoring my dad’s old 1985 gmc s15 4x4. After and engine and transmission rebuild, new radiator, new ignition coil, it’s finally running close to a new truck. Just need to fix a few more things so I can finish it off with a new paint job! I love this old truck
I'm really excited for this build. I have 2 torn down MK1 pickups that I'm currently rwd swapping. Excited to see how someone else goes about this. There are a few well build RWD ones on youtube/instagram, but its always interesting to see how other people go about it.
It would be a good idea to add a brace to connect the front of the lower control arms. It has a tendency to separate under hard acceleration and flex back under hard braking. These are pretty "flexible"! It happens with rust free cars, one can only imagine what it will do with a "ventilated" one!

The same way my wife could not pull the car into the garage far enough, and brought the door down scratching all down the face of the bumper, the day after I had it repaired from her not pulling in far enough and bringing the garage door down on the rear bumper, scratching it all up. Or how my wife hit a curb going around a corner, blowing out the tire, and then when she is coming to pick me up in the other car, after I went with the tow truck driver to the tire shop, she hits the curb and blows out the tire on our second car as she is coming into the parking lot. We then had to sit there while they fixed both cars. And she wants to try being a school bus driver. lol

The Cybertruck will have 2 layers per side of tempered stainless steel that is 3mm thick each. Typical body steel is not tempered or stainless and is about a small fraction of that. The armour on an M4 Sherman tank was as thin as one layer of 4mm crude industrial use carbon steel for reference. I believe that in the instance of a collision the design flaw will be revealed in the other vehicle.
Hi Rich I had an 80 Rabbit diesel that I drove 200k mile s or so. A couple of things I learned the hard way. 1) is the serpentine timing belt had something like a 30k replacement schedule, and it should be respected-- how do I know-- valves making contact with the top of pistons is a bad thing. 2) idler wheel bearings fail hard with no notice + see # 1! 3) the thermostat fails at random fairly often. 4) the stock aluminum / plastic radiator was total junk--too small and prone to failure. they made an after-mart all copper oversize one that worked good in Vegas where I had it. 5) the plug for the fan /would fail and give you intermittent fan operation check that. 6) the heater core rotted out / failed early --probably why it is in bypass. 7)The fuel fill was always Slow and BAD --- that clear hose is what lets the foam out to the filler neck and it needs to be routed with lots of love. Still, Always painful to fill. 8) It got a consistent 50 mpg --- I once drove it to La Paz, Baja Cal took the ferry to the mainland on down to Puerto Vallarta and then back to Vegas for under $100 in fuel. for 3500 miles. Have fun.
Hmm, either my handbook and my local VW shop were lying or the wikipedia page does, because my 1985 mk2 diesel (built in Germany) had a timing chain. Even the handbook told me to "get the chain checked at 200k km" (about 125k miles) which I did, and it consisted of one of the mechanics coming out of the shop, listening to the engine running and telling me "well, it does run perfect, what do you want me to do?" So, the timing belt with a 30k replacement schedule... well... that's about a quarter of what I was told. Drove that one to 235k km (that's about 145k miles), average consumption was normally about 5l/100km (47mpg), but I got it down to 3.5l/100km (67mpg) on long journeys. It was the most reliable car I ever had. The only thing it didn't like was cold starts below -20C (-4F).
Somehow haven’t run into this channel until today. Jokes hit well. Fast paced edit. Great camera shots. Cars are all interesting. Rich is fun to listen to get through all information.
My well-used 2010 Fiat Panda 1.3 16 valve turbo diesel had a broken cam chain. But inlet manifold was full of soot from the EGR valve. So that meant a head off to clean it. And… there was a stuck injector. I pulled the crank and found oil control piston rings were full of soot. But new rings, cam chain rockers and lifters and off it went. Also fitted new oil seals and new clutch. Brakes fully overhauled with braided hoses. New suspension, and slightly wider wheels. Does it go or what! The claimed 70bhp feels like 100. It remaps to 95bhp which should be awesome.
I saw steveon in a tavarish p1 video... he's probably busy doing other projects for the company. Agreed it's not the same without that fella. Missing the flute toots bros. Long live steveon.
To be fair that Tavarish video might have been well before the accident. I want to see him back as well, but keep in mind it was a near death experience. He might have to work through some stuff even if the court case isn't a factor.
These little trucks and the hatchback it was based on was still available new in South Africa till 2009. By then it was actually a great car! Dashboard was changed to resemble later VW models and the mirrors on the doors was moved forward with the quarter lights removed.
Basically the cyber trucks exoskeleton is pretty indestructible. Getting rear ended won't damage it but even if it does the panels can be swapped out fairly easy
my buddy had one of these. brake issues were hell. turns out we had a problem in the little valve thingie below the master cylinder. it's some sort of proportioning valve but it was clogged solid.

The cam cover breather spitting oil directly into the air intake is a recipe for an entertaining runaway at some point, so there’s that to look forward to.
I think the stainless steel body on the cyber truck will easily handle bumps from other cars without much damage. Panel alignments can be aligned and managed much easier if the panels are just straight sheets. So minor bumps will not be a problem for the CT, and a major crash will just total your 100K truck. No self repairs please ( a user can't do that if it is difficult for Tesla themselves to do so)
I chortled when I saw the insurance adjuster's recommendation of Saugus Auto Body. I remember them from my days as an auto parts delivery driver and...well they're about as nice as you'd expect for a shop in Lynn.
I believe the bed of the Honda ridge line is not separate from the cab, the separation alone is a design feature to make it appear it is separate as it a unibody design.
I used to deliver pizzas for Papa Gino's in Newton back in the late 90s. I bought a 84 Rabbit diesel just for that. I could fill the tank for $15 and deliver all week!
I doubt that any body shop can handle repairs on the cybertruck for a while, they simply don’t have the knowledge and my guess specialty tools and glue. But Tesla is a lot bigger than Rivian and has their own repair shops, so my guess is you’ll have an easier time finding a shop that will do the repairs, it might simply not be near you and you’ll definitely won’t get another cybertruck as a loaner. As for those that have knowledge on how to work with steel, you won’t be able to simply buy a piece of stainless steel and create a brand new panel or even simply fix the existing panel. The metal is so strong Tesla is using huge presses to bend them and they had to develop an air cushion system to do so without leaving tool marks. My guess is that will have no other choice then to buy the parts from Tesla. Another thing to take into account is that, from what I’ve seen so far, the panels are indeed structural. The metal is so strong that denting it will require a good amount of force. This means that if you manage to dent a door panel, chances are that the structure behind will also be bent and you’ll need to replace the whole part.

my new LIGHTNING PRO was sideswiped by a smaller older sedan back in JANUARY... after driving it to no less than 5 different BODY SHOPS, not only in my own town, but two other neighboring towns within 40 miles, NOT A SINGLE BODY SHOP HAS CALLED ME BACK OR SCHEDULED ME IN FOR REPAIRS, now over 9 MONTHS later. They all were polite and had their shop 'manager' take a look at the relatively easy repairs, and yet not one has decided to take on the repairs... and not a single call to tell me why. Unique one-year Ford IcedBlueSilverMetallic paint? Aluminum body? EV? who knows... I decided to just take the other vehicle's insurer's GEICO money and keep it and not even worry about the repairs, since they are probably not noticeable by anyone passing by and don't affect drivability at all. I also realize the logistics of repairs, when a 'loaner' or 'rental' vehicle comes into play - as I'm sure they would NOT have an EV to loan/rent me, and I don't relish having to pump gas at $3 a gallon, when I charge my truck at home at less than $1 per day.
I had one of those when I was a young Marine. I drove the daylights out of it. I was laughed at by my muscle car friends, but that little Diesel pickup got 60+ MPG and I drove it all over the country. I'm a pretty big guy too, so it was funny getting out of it. Some of my Marine buddies thought it was funny to pick up the front end of that truck when I would try to leave the area. The last time they ever did it I grabbed a snow brush I had in the truck because I was from up north, eh. Anyway, while those guys were holding up the front of my truck I took the snow brush and wedged it on the throttle with it in gear, then stepped out and started walking away. That was a bunch of Marines that pooed on themselves. Good times! They never did that to me again.
Funny as usual. And looking forward to the show. Though yeah, Edris had his own car show a long time ago. He could've at least co-starred with ya. Anyhoo, looking forward to the updates. Great point about a single panel body.
The bed being separate from the truck is part of what makes a truck a truck. If you cant remove the bed to install a flatbed or hitch or work bed or welding bed (the point of a truck is to be utilitarian, customizing it to your needs) then is it a truck or is it an SUV with less seating and a smaller roof?

I don't know if it's the same on this engine but you have to bleed the air from the cooling system in many german cars. The leaking would probably take care of it for you though so the VW basically fixed itself.

The body shops don’t work on it be cause Rivian refuses to sell parts to them. I was the 2nd parts person hired at Rivian…… Parts is a total disaster when it comes to body shops. The PNW was a mess with Accurate Auto Body.
I was paying $250 per year for a '70 Sedan de Ville, same coverage.
before long, no-pay-out and listed as totaled. good luck.
My local Rivian approved repair shop in Annapolis has five Amazon Rivian vans that have sat on their lot for about five months now. Most of them seem to have busted tail light assemblies. Amazon delivery drivers are definitely known for their driving prowess, gotta be some salvage vans on the market by now
I thought I might want a Rivian… not anymore! The VW isn’t safe, I’m more of a Lexus LS kinda guy.
Amazon vans are leased to private delivery firms or subcontractors.Must likely they will be repaired or these vans are operated to the max.
Why would you ever admit aloud that you desire an appliance AKA like 90% of Toyota/Lexus products are appliances
on the road today bring
One of my school friend's parents had a Mk1 Diesel Golf. They would maybe fill the tank once a month at most.
I am absolutely here for this build, do not abandon it!
@@mmaxx9915 If the Rivian is aluminum that might explain the price difference too. Aluminum repairs are always expensive.
That seam is not cosmetic. The side bed panels are bolted on just like the front fenders.

A team of design engineers spent months on that design, and they decided it was best that way. Only an ignoramus would sit on a couch armed with a bag of potato chips and think he knows better.
@@Andriastravels So how many of these have you modified? Those design engineers, of which you clearly aren't one, didn't design these to hold up to high increases in power. Instead of insulting people, go and do some fucking homework.

Best comment 🤣

I’ve always wanted one of those rabbit pickups! I’m envious and excited to see what you do with it :)

Yah, the tavarish video was before the accident. Someone was able to see the filming date on Rich's watch in that video.

At 2:41 during the squarespace ad in the top right corner there is a tab that reads:" Relax, Stevon will be back "....🎉😂
I think the stainless steel body on the cyber truck will easily handle bumps from other cars without much damage. Panel alignments can be aligned and managed much easier if the panels are just straight sheets. So minor bumps will not be a problem for the CT, and a major crash will just total your 100K truck. No self repairs please ( a user can't do that if it is difficult for Tesla themselves to do so)

The Volkswagen diesel rabbit p/u is awesome. I've had 2. They go and go and go.
Uhkay Rich, can we have a bit of an update as to where you are holding Stevon prisoner?
That's what I love about old Volkswagen, they'll fall apart, but they'll get you home.
I used to deliver pizzas for Papa Gino's in Newton back in the late 90s. I bought a 84 Rabbit diesel just for that. I could fill the tank for $15 and deliver all week!
5:18 “UNCLE RICH” had me ROFL 😂😂😂😂😂
I normally love your content but this is the first project im actually stoked to see. Nice job Rich!
Too bad you'll never ever see it again lol

my new LIGHTNING PRO was sideswiped by a smaller older sedan back in JANUARY... after driving it to no less than 5 different BODY SHOPS, not only in my own town, but two other neighboring towns within 40 miles, NOT A SINGLE BODY SHOP HAS CALLED ME BACK OR SCHEDULED ME IN FOR REPAIRS, now over 9 MONTHS later.
