Re the snare. In my experience if you over beef the lower frequency's it can confuse the kick to the snare mix. If your not careful it will sound like one continues kick drum. Remember what sounds good individually won't make a good mix together. Also try different mics on the snare, The 57's are very venerable to being broken & add a bit to much top & bottom. Try an old beyer 201 mic & hear the smother top to bottom sound. The newer Sennheiser E904 are good & easy to place.
